HULSENBECK, P.A. Garden Of Stone LP
LP version; includes download. At first glance, Garden Of Stone, the inaugural solo record by P. A. Hülsenbeck, seems to ripple serpentine. Scales over flesh topple softly as a snake piles high in the dim. Garden Of Stone is a molt, a shedding of one old thing to reveal something new. But instead of the shirking off of some glistening scaled skin, the record's nine pieces shed the raw human experience and from its depths rises Hülsenbeck. His voice, like his image on the album cover, is hidden under each piece. He uses it as an instrument that drifts in from somewhere deep, dark, and below. In front, around, above, and underneath swim guitar, synthesizer, koto, saxophone, trumpet, horn, drums, and bass to provide a soft, lush foundation. From somewhere distant, each note carries the scent of pine, forgotten cabins, and damp but breezy oceans. Each piece in this album reminisces of a well-laid plot, they swell to retreat, ebb to flow and just as distortion begins to drift in, swift wind carries the melody away. This music is the outcome of the search for sound, a polyphonic reflection of the music itself. It moves in the darkness and dances in the open; exposed and forever drifting. When after Hülsenbeck's first band Sizarr ceased to exist, the musician radicalized his language under the Doomhound moniker. After one year of touring he shed his electronic hide to reveal something gentle and new. Hülsenbeck's new album dances the way flesh might, whether it be by serpent or some other body. Beginning in Leipzig, P. A. became engulfed in techniques that explore relationships between body and mind through exercises in expressive movement improvisation. In other words, he began to dance. Through those physical techniques, he found the philosophy that from now on determines his approach: turn the inside out without question and give it freely to the outside world. A process in which Hülsenbeck routinely finds himself practicing in the distinctive dreamland of Garden Of Stone. While "Anima", "Säule" and "Vessel" are instrumental, the other six pieces on "Garden Of Stone" tell stories that conjure up a person who blossoms in the ether behind; Hülsenbeck is truly himself. The record was produced by Hülsenbeck with his friend Tim Roth (Drangsal). It was recorded by Joe Haege and Fritz Brückner (White Wine), and also features Johannes Döpping (drums), Johanne Weber (basses), and Max Kraft (horn/trumpet).

ROUGH & WOJTYLA FEATURING RICHARD PINHAS Rough & Wojtyla Featuring Richard Pinhas LP
Rough & Wojtyla Featuring Richard Pinhas is Rough & Wojtyla's second album. Richard Pinhas, the founder of '70s legends Heldon is one of France's best known experimental musicians and is a key figure in the fusion of rock with electronic music. Drones are supported by a tentative jazz drum beat and Pinhas's guitar. In perfect harmony, the three musicians don't take themselves seriously. They saturate their sonic world with long abstruse silences, before returning more furiously into the barely hidden chaos. The listener is constantly pushed around, always looking for something to hang on to without ever finding it.

FRED UND LUNA Im Tiefenrausch 2LP
Double LP version. A mesmerizing trip from Krautland through electronic fields to hypnotonia, exploring the textures of haunting melodies, luscious dreamscapes and tribal, dancefloor-ready beats. After their highly acclaimed debut album Im Klanggarten (2017) (on Bigamo, the label of Frank Wiedemann and Ame), Im Tiefenrausch is Fred Und Luna's next fascinating step in their Elektrokraut/Krautelektro series. Who are Fred Und Luna? Fred Und Luna are two mannequins living in a fashion boutique in Karlsruhe, Germany. They serve as muse for musician, lector, poet and photo/video maker Rainer Buchmüller. Inspired by his doll friends and his love for German electronic music of the past decades, Buchmüller under the alias "Fred Und Luna" produces his self-created genres Elektrokraut and Krautelektro: both a modern combination of repetitive rhythms, beautiful melodies, electronic soundscapes and elements from the krautrock era. Under the name of Ariston Baton, Buchmüller also writes and performs sound poems and concrete poetry. At live events and especially at exhibitions, Ariston Baton joins "Fred Und Luna" and Buchmüller's third identity Vizudaru Nono, who contributes video and photo projections. Together they form the so-called Equipe Nadaphysique. The next exhibition featuring all three named personalities will take place end of October 2018 at Rockomotives Festival in Vendôme, France. A brief history of Fred Und Luna Having previously released the EP Glück Auf (OM 034EP, 2016) on the Scottish label Optimo Music and being remixed by Prins Thomas for the Berlin label Innervisions, the year 2017 saw Fred Und Luna feature their debut album Im Klanggarten on Frank Wiedemann's (Âme, Howling) newly-founded label Bigamo Musik. After the first editions of both the EP and LP both sold out quickly, live shows in Germany, France and England followed as well as remixes for Peter Pardeike (Connaisseur Recordings) and a common release with Trikk on Innervisions, among others. A team-up with Achim Treu (UFO Hawaii) resulted in several remixes for international musicians.

"When this album was first released in 1969, the young combo around vibraphonist and singer Andre Tanker conveyed a new style mix, which apparently naturally merged quite different musical influences into a new whole. At the center of the music of the Andre Tanker Five was jazz in its Caribbean, Trinidadian style, a combination of the modern jazz of those days and the sounds of the extremely popular steeldrum bands of the time. A very decisive addition is typical for Trinidad: Calypso. Calypso stands for the attitude to life of this young generation of musicians, for the 'Good Time Feeling' and the desire to incorporate danceable Caribbean rhythms and Afro-Latin grooves into their individual style. Although the original sounds of the young Andre Tanker Five are deeply rooted in the music of the West Indies, Afro-American elements always remain in the foreground. The young combo is musically equally at home in the Caribbean as in the 'hip' jazz clubs of the US megacities and the juke joints of the south with their sultry blues as well as the soul dance halls in Detroit or Memphis. The combination of vibraphone and electric guitar plus bass/drums is also rather unusual in those days. Not a pure instrumental album, Afro Blossom West delivers some surprising vocals - rather unusual for a groove-jazz-based project with a sophisticated rhythmic sound.Bandleader and vibraphonist Andre Tanker is considered a very creative and versatile musician. His exciting improvisations are a dominant feature of this group. 'Party In The City', 'Lena' and 'Swahili' are original compositions of which he sings the first two himself. Guitarist Clarence Wears is a gifted accompanist and effective soloist. His sometimes 'funky soul style' is more reminiscent of 'Memphis' than 'Trinidad'."

DADAWAH Peace And Love LP
LP version, 2018 repress. Dark, hypnotic, tripping nyabinghi from 1974. Led by Jamaican Rastafarian singing hand-drummer Ras Michael over four extended excursions, the music is organic, sublime and expansive, grounation drums and bass-heavy (with no rhythm guitar; rather, Willie Lindo brilliantly improvising a kind of dazed blues). Lloyd Charmers and Federal Studios engineer George Raymond stayed up all night after the session to mix the recording, opening out the enraptured mood into echoing space, adding sparse, startling effects to the keyboards. At no cost to its deep spirituality, this is the closest reggae comes to psychedelia. Previously squandered in an incongruous 2-for-1 reissue, now lovingly returned to its original, singular glory at Abbey Road. Pressed on super-fly vinyl and housed in new standard-printed sleeves.

LP version. "Sing," Salewski said, "sing whatever you want. And so I did and so did six others." These are modern chansons, where every singer or noisemaker is offered up a tailored, musical meandering on a silver platter to do what they will with it. The input of each respective singer put a lid to the already lush, almost orchestral, tracks, be it Inida Kreuz with her Albanian "Strand II" sing-song, Pico Be's textual "Sulukule", Manuela Rzytki with her tongue-in-cheek real French chanson "Ceci N'est Pas Une Pipe", or Rosalie Eberle and her operatic lush excessive screams in "Weniger", unto Autoboy's autotune summer hit "Epuscrular". And even the entire absence of a throat coined "Monolith" that is the rumbling, clattering voice of Anton Kaun. Secretly, even Salewski's vocal organ finds its way onto the record, disguised as Agnostoman singing on "Mantra I", Anna McCarthy speaks of ghost drivers and limbs that are seemingly just "Painted On" in a hypnotic manner, as is coincidentally or not, the case on most of the songs on this album. Chansons sung and spoken by people that Salewski regards as having a voice, in one way or another, that can accentuate and elaborate on the music he produces on his own, and which was subsequently mixed and produced together with Albert Pöschl in his Echokammer studio. Salewski's perfectly pre-produced percussion and synthesizer landscapes are all played by the master himself; recorded on a 24-track in his very own hazy front room, whilst sun rays shone through penny plants and cast long shadows on eggshell-colored rugs and that's what it sounds like in all its eclecticism. He is a musician and person who does not need much to make much. A minimalist with a heart of gold. And that is what this album is: A box of jewels that mess with your mind and soothe the soul, simultaneously.

SAITO, TAKAKO Spontaneous Music 2LP
Takako Saito (born 1929) is a Japanese artist closely related with Fluxus. In the 1950s, she participated in the "Creative Art Education" movement where she met later Fluxus fellow Ay-O. In 1963, she moved to New York where she was introduced to George Maciunas and became an important member of the Fluxus movement. Much of her work revolves around everyday life and everyday things, to which she adds her unique artistic gesture through small but deliberate and carefully crafted interventions. Many of her pieces involve the participation of viewers and only become complete when the audience fills a co-designing role. A sense of playfulness is evident throughout her work, seen in many of her performances and particularly in her various "free" chess games. In line with her general artistic approach, Saito recorded a number of musical pieces between 1982 and 1992. Retrospectively, she called these recordings "Spontaneous Music" because they involved very simple actions with voice and everyday objects that happened spontaneously. Some recordings have become part of sound pieces in her exhibition "Games" at Emily Harvey Gallery in New York in 1990, but none of them have been released so far. A selection from the recordings is published here for the first time. This double LP includes two solo vocal pieces: "Tarori Po Po Po" and "Isokono Pasokono"; two more vocal pieces in which Saito's voice interacts with the sounds of an everyday event: "Toro Während Des Naturreiskochens" (Toro While Cooking Brown Rice) and "Mit Elektrohammer" (With Electric Hammer); and two non-vocal sound pieces: "Kugeln" (Balls) and "Am Rhein Mit Hammer" (At The Rhine With Hammer). All recordings have been carefully digitized and mastered by Dirk Specht. Housed in a full-color sleeve; includes one insert with liner notes by Saito, a poster, and four postcards all designed by Takako Saito specifically for this release and relate to the notion of the music having been created simply with one's mouth and hands. Edition of 300.From Takako Saito's liner notes: "Around me, there are many things that make beautiful sounds. When I look outside through the window in front of my desk, I see a big Platanus tree whose leaves are shaking. When you stick a microphone into the leaves, it should made beautiful sounds. Then sometimes a dog passes by and barks. [...] That is music to me. No matter if one notices it or not: it's different but it's there."

POPULARE MECHANIK Hi-Fi Is Sweeping the Country! 2LP
Populäre Mechanik is an improvisational group from Berlin playing a unique amalgam of Fluxus-inspired garage rock, free jazz, and live electronics. It was originally founded in the early 1980s by Wolfgang Seidel who had previously been the original drummer for West-Berlin leftist rock band Ton Steine Scherben and after that became a long-time collaborator of Conrad Schnitzler with whom he played in Kluster and Eruption, as well as in duo recordings. Recently, Seidel emerged as an author and has published a number of writings on the history of free rock and experimental music in Western Germany -- especially Krautrock -- most notably the book Wir Müssen Hier Raus (Ventil Verlag, 2016) that is still awaiting its English translation. The music of Populäre Mechanik is rooted in equal parts in the pop music socialization of its members and the desire to experiment and incorporate cues from free improvisation and avant-garde music, while retaining a sense of enjoyment and playfulness, avoiding all pitfalls that are often present in rock-based progressive music. The name of the band is a nod to the 1950s and 1960s era of US science and technology magazine Popular Mechanics and was chosen as a statement of positive affirmation of the modern age, against the dystopias offered by much of punk and Industrial music at that time. The first incarnation of Populäre Mechanik released a 7" single and two cassettes, parts of which have recently been compiled on a CD/LP on Bureau B (BB 186CD/LP, 2015). It broke up during the 1980s. In 2005, Seidel revived the name for a new line-up -- himself being the only common member -- that played in a similar vein. This second incarnation of Populäre Mechanik can be heard for the first time on this double-LP. The line-up features improvised vocals by Alex Bulgrin, who otherwise performs as a garage rock singer with Berlin's '60s music collective Beatorganization, as well as Sven Hanke (table git, synth), Marcus Jaeger (guitar), Lars Jeschke (piano, keyboards), Kolja Nixdorf (trumpet), Matthias Sareika (bass, synth), and Wolfgang Seidel (percussion, synth). All recordings were made between 2005 and 2014 in Populäre Mechanik's rehearsal room. Full-color, gatefold sleeve with photos and extensive liner notes by Seidel explaining the history and musical positions of the group; Edition of 300.

SAAMI, USTAD God Is Not A Terrorist LP
Ustad Saami's God Is Not A Terrorist is hypnotic, unvarnished recordings by one of Pakistan's most revered and iconic classical singers. The roots of Saami's music go back to the 13th century, but its message is contemporary and universal: "to sing is to listen." Produced by Grammy Award winner Ian Brennan, God Is Not A Terrorist is volume five of Glitterbeat's acclaimed Hidden Musics series. "75-year-old Ustad Saami risks his life daily in Pakistan to keep alive his microtonal, pre-Islamic, multilingual (Farsi, Sanskrit, Hindi, the ancient language of Vedic, gibberish, Arabic, and Urdu) music. Handed down by his ancestors for over a thousand years, he is the only practitioner of Surti left in the world; when he passes, this music will die with him. Extremists resent his work as they do anything else pre-dating Muhammad. In the land where Osama Bin last hid, Master Ustad Naseeruddin Saami has spent his entire life mastering the nuances of every given note. It has been said that India always had a region where all of the greatest singers came from; that place is Pakistan. "To sing is to listen." These are the words of the master. The translation of his last name, Saami, even means "to hear." For him, everything centers on one note. From that, all else grows and music is seen as a sixth sense for people to better communicate with each other. With great precision, Saami utilizes 49 notes versus the West's mere seven. The scale was founded by a mix-raced royal whose lifelong endeavor was to make peace with duality through art. This predecessor of qawwali music is called khayál, the Arabic word for "imagination"; in it the melody carries the meaning. The lyrics are almost incidental during these call-and-responses. It is the uneven pitches that the master values as being the most searching; those with even numbers are too stable. The master shapes the notes with his hands as he sings like conducting a Theremin. Most masters now hide their knowledge, possessively passing their skills down through family only. Subsequently, traditions have died and withered. Master Saami's mission is to share his knowledge with the world, so that the music may live on freely." --Ian Brennan. LP version; 180 gram vinyl, includes download.

Precious, timely, moody reflections on migrating from Côte d'Ivoire to Moss, in Norway, over ruff breakbeat funk supplied by the nimble bass-playing of Maimouna's old man (from Kambo Super Sound), and the expert conga and kit-drumming of Stliletti-Ana (from Jesse, in Helsinki). Even in their delirium, b-boys and girls will savor traces of the Incredible Bongo Band, in the chorus. Over the eight minutes, and going deeper on the flip, the mix lifts off into a cosmic steppers dub, featuring Gilb-r alongside Sotofett on keyboards, with no let up for the dancefloor in energy and vibes.

Three murderous steppers dubs on a propulsive, rat-tat-tat rhythm, combining mystical spaciousness with detail and ferocity. Angry-lion bass and smears of brass, fusillades and explosions, scares and shocks, oriental pentatonics, clattering percussion and synthy transcendence -- the business. The second mix is nastiest; the third is the wildest and most discombobulated. Letter-pressed, poly-lined sleeves.

LP version. Heavy cardboard, die-cut cover; Includes printed inner sleeves and download code; Edition of 500. Scottish composer and multi-instrumentalist Bill Wells returns with The Sensory Illusions, the eponymous debut album from his duo with virtuoso tuba player Danielle Price. Featuring Wells on electric guitar, the album has all the warmth, melancholy, and playfulness of his finest work, with timeless melodies that touch on jazz, pop, bossa nova, soundtracks, and folk. Wells has used the tuba in several of his projects. Bassist Lindsay Cooper doubled up on tuba in his Octet, while 2011's Lemondale (2011) features the renowned Japanese tuba player Sekijima Takero. In 2014, Wells was looking for tuba player to play on his second album with Aidan Moffat, The Most Important Place In The World. Price came recommended and subsequently joined their touring band. "A couple of weeks later I discovered that she and I were neighbors!" Wells adds. As a result, they would occasionally get together to practice standards. The Sensory Illusions emerged after Wells secured a Glasgow support slot with Anna Meredith in April 2016. Wells notes that these tunes came to him in dreams, as did the band name. He states: "In some ways it's a continuation of the more jazz-based line-ups such as the trio and the octet," says Wells, "but for me the focus is as much on the guitar playing as the writing. I'm interested in playing over standard type (chord) sequences but hopefully not sounding too much like a 'jazz guitarist'." Wells has nothing but praise for his musical partner. "Danielle is one of the best musicians I've ever worked with. She's extremely versatile, from playing in trad jazz bands or with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, to playing with the likes of Ashley Paul, Mats Gustafson, and Ntshuks Bonga. She functions as both bass player and drummer in the Sensory Illusions, combing percussive sounds with melodic patterns/riffs." That rhythmic quality can be heard on tracks such as "Tango", which she underpins with strutting riff, and "Theme From Flint", where she transforms Jerry Goldsmith's lounge-jazz groove into a cantering brass figure. Yet the tuba is also the vehicle for some of Wells's loveliest melodies, from the wistful "Brass Alley Dream" to closing track "An August Ballad".

KarlRecords presents a repress of Borders And Ruins (2017), Giulio Aldinucci's ambient masterpiece of sublime beauty and sacral majesty which made it onto several best-of lists of 2017. Giulio Aldinucci is an Italian sound artist working in the fields of experimental electroacoustic music, field recording and ambient soundscape. Born 1981 in Siena, his catalog comprises four solo albums on labels like Dronarivm (Chihei Hatakeyama, Aidan Baker), Time Released Sound or Home Normal ((HOMEN 067CD, 2016), (HOMEN 094CD, 2018)) plus EPs and collaborative albums. He has also written music for theater, video art, documentaries, and short movies and was awarded with an honorable mention at the 18th International Electroacoustic Composition Competition Música Viva 2017 for his composition "Mute Sirens". Together with Attilio Novellino, Aldinucci launched the project Postcards From Italy which consists of an album published by Oak Editions, live events and an installation by AIPS Collective and Gianmarco Del Re. Borders And Ruins, his first album for KarlRecords, is a reflection on the instability of borders - borders as an extreme attempt to discriminate and rationalize that turns into a source of chaos and cultural ruins on both sides - and their impact on the relationship between people and territory. It is also a sonic diary, a constantly mutating soundscape where electronic sounds and field recordings (taken during several travels around the continent) blend into an ambient masterpiece of sublime beauty and sacral majesty.

Audrey Chen's long-awaited new solo album Runt Vigor is an adventurous sonic exploration of the voice, cello and analog electronics. Chen began her relationship with sound through the cello and voice over 30 years ago and in the past 15 years, her predominant focus has been her solo work, joining together the extended and inherent vocabularies of the cello, voice and analog electronics (with all sounds created without electronic effect or enhancement other than amplification). More recently, she has begun to shift back towards the exploration of the voice as a primary instrument, delving even more deeply into her own version of narrative and non-linear storytelling. She derives her sound material in continuous process, championing the "in-between" and overlooked. Regardless of instrument, Chen's mode of experimentation touches both the abstractly beautiful and the aggressively unsettling, creating a kind of curiously imagined architecture, non-prosaic song or ritual that reaches beyond gravity or language. Recent projects, aside from performing solo, include her long running duo with Phil Minton, duos Hiss & Viscera with modular synth player Richard Scott, Beam Splitter with Norwegian trombonist Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø, and the "romantic noise duo" Afterburner with Doron Sadja (electronics/light projection). Past projects include work with German conceptual artist John Bock, a duo with NYC abstract turntablist Maria Chavez, and a quartet with Nate Wooley, C. Spencer Yeh and Todd Carter that released a LP on Monotype. Her new projects include a double duo/quartet with Beam Splitter and Streifenjunko's Eivind Lønning and Espen Reinertsen and Mopcut with Lukas König and Julien Desprez.

LEICHTMANN, HANNO Nouvelle Aventure LP
Distilling sounds from the now 70-year-old archive of the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music, the Berlin based electronic artist Hanno Leichtmann presents a stunning album which is remix, collage, and homage at the same time. On his latest work Nouvelle Aventure, Berlin's Hanno Leichtmann -- who besides his solo works, also plays with Jan Jelinek and Andrew Pekler in Groupshow and recently released his second album with Valerio Tricoli on Entr'acte in 2018 -- presents his very individual approach to the task of remixing and reworking the IMD archive. As in his previous installations (e.g. "Skin, Wood, Traps" for Haus Der Kulturen Der Welt, celebrating the 100th birthday of the drum set), the electronic artist distills his sound material exclusively from a thematically fixed archive, in this case: concert recordings, lectures, and discussions from the famous Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music (Stockhausen, Nono, Ligeti, Xenakis, et al.) Originally a six-channel installation as part of "Historage" at Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt, the composition is here presented as a 46-minutes stereo mix. Leichtmann sent the subjectively-chosen sounds through his unique machinery of voltage-controlled (micro-) loopers, re-recorded them and then in a last step pieced them together in his studio, primarily applying the traditional parameters of early electronic (tape) music such as amplitude, pitch/speed, playback direction, series/cuts, but most of all: repetition. The result is a stunning album and a highly psychedelic affair, as mirrored by the amazing artwork by Caro Mikalef (Cabina). Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code.

ALDINUCCI, GIULIO Disappearing In A Mirror LP
LP version. Silk-screened sleeve. Italian sound artist Giulio Aldinucci drops his second album on KarlRecords, Disappearing In A Mirror, is again a truly masterfully composed and sound-designed ambient masterpiece and a more than worthy follow-up to the critically acclaimed Borders And Ruins, (KR 040LP, 2017), which made it onto several year's best lists for 2017. Over the course of four solo albums on labels like Dronarivm plus EPs and collaborative albums (with Ian Hawgood (HOMEN 094CD, 2018)), Giulio Aldinucci successively has been refining his skills as composer and sound designer. His elegant style which blends ambient and field recordings came to full impact on his Borders And Ruins which gained the Italian sound artist critical praise and made it onto several year's best lists Disappearing In A Mirror is again not only a musical masterpiece of sublime beauty and sacral majesty, but it also deals with philosophical concerns. Where Borders And Ruins was a reflection on the instability of borders as an extreme attempt to discriminate and rationalize that turns into a source of chaos and cultural ruins on both sides, and their impact on the relationship between people and territory, Disappearing In A Mirror raises the very personal question of identity. In the words of Aldinucci , " Disappearing In A Mirror focuses on the fluidity of the identity concept, highlighting the harmonious coexistence of contradictory elements and the transitional features that characterize every transformation. It is a reflection on the current situation of change and disruption and at the same time it is a gaze into the human timeless soul and its inner soundscapes."

KIDEL, SAM Silicon Ear LP
"Following his compelling comment on the modern-day culture of call centres, Disruptive Muzak -- awarded Album of the Year 2016 by Boomkat -- Sam Kidel turns his analytical artistry towards the ominous gatekeepers of online communication with a rave-inspired rebel spirit to match his scientific methodology.'Chamber music meets free-party-scene warehouse-invasion'First exhibited at EBM(T) in Tokyo, 'Live @ Google Data Center' trespasses in Google's data center in Council Bluffs, Iowa to perform electronic music amongst the humming banks of servers and endless cable runs, without actually breaking in. In a process he describes as 'mimetic hacking', Kidel used architectural plans based on photos of the data center to acoustically model the sonic qualities of the space. The resulting acoustics on 'Live @ Google Data Center' simulate the sound of Kidel's algorithmically-generated notes, rhythms and melodies reverberating through the space, as though a bold illegal party was being held in the maximum-security location. Kidel's manipulation of his generative direction of the music, all inspired by images of the data center.'Music that deafens the silicon ear'The generative audio patch Kidel used to make 'Voice Recognition DoS Attack' seeks to disable the functionality of voice recognition software by triggering phonemes (the smallest units of language). The project, first developed for the Eavesdropping series of events in Melbourne, exploits a weakness in voice recognition that cannot distinguish between individual voices. When you speak while the patch is playing, the cascading shards of human expression mask your speech and thus protect you from automated surveillance, questioning our vulnerability in the face of global data giants. In amongst these displaced sounds, Kidel fed additional musical elements into his patch to create the version of the project heard on this release."

NFOR, WILLY Movements: Boogie Down In Africa 2LP
Movements: Boogie Down In Africa is a compilation of lovingly selected tracks from three albums by Willie Nfor: Mighty Flames Willie Nfor (1979), Feel So Fine (1981) and My Turn (1982). All highly sought-after albums of quality Nigerian boogie funk. This release is Livingstone Studio's seventh release, and it resonates with the label deeply. "The sessions were at Decca Studios at Akoka area of Lagos, they had a 16-track analog recording unit. It was like jazz, you had to be on top of your game as a musician, you couldn't erase the guitar lines or drums and redo it like with digital, one person slips up, you start all over again... So we rehearsed and rehearsed and then we went down and recorded the takes." Cameroon has a tradition of great bass players, names such as Jean Dikoto Mandengue, Vicky Edimo, Alhadji Toure, Basil Barap, Armand Sabal Lecco, Felix Sabal Lecco, Raymond Doumbe, Guy Nsangue, Jay Lou Ava, and Richard Bona. He was in that tradition. His Nigerian career was not well distributed outside Nigeria so that didn't help but when he got to Paris, he quickly became one of the hottest African musicians on the circuit, playing with Mory Kante (for whom he played on three albums and enjoyed a global hit, "Yeke Yeke", which took them touring around the world), Tulio de Piscopo, David Sancious, Charlelie Couture, Mbilia Bel (with whom he toured Southern Africa), Kante Manfila, Manu Dibango, Aicha Kone, and a host of others. Willy was special; before ending up in France, he played in the East of Nigeria and in Lagos both as a session man and as a member of The Mighty Flames, Sonny Okosun's band, and Bongos Ikwe's Groovies. Migration has become one of the biggest global news items in recent times. Willy Ngeh Nfor was a migrant before the word became so popular and tinged with a bad connotation. His music was made to travel. This release is a celebration of music as a space capsule and of man as a vector of creativity, inventions, love, and energy. Everybody migrates at some point in history. Everyone needs to celebrate humanity and free the migrant from bad energy, bad choices, and a bad image. Includes previously unpublished photos and detailed notes; gatefold sleeve.

AMOR Sinking Into A Miracle CD
"Sinking Into A Miracle is the debut album by Glasgow's AMOR, a quartet of musical travelers exploring the sonic open-ended-ness of dance music. Following two critically acclaimed 12-inches, this is a fully developed treatise on ecstasy and transcendence. Here, Richard Youngs, Michael Francis Duch, Paul Thomson and Luke Fowler are more honed, razor sharp in focus and timing, testing their instrumental prowess on condensed song structures and new, enlightened feelings of expansive hope and bliss. From the outset, it's an ambitious yet ultimately inclusive journey. Recorded to 24-track tape at Chem 19 and mixed by Paul Savage and Richard McMaster (Golden Teacher), this full length retains the elastic grooves of Paradise and Higher Moment, the group's previous singles, but relinquishes the classic Philadelphia International-tinged sound in favor of looser rhythmic patterns. There are new depths to the compositions: a more free-flowing approach to percussion and deft experiments in hybridity make for a full and rounded, emotionally tinged record. Indeed, there are times when AMOR sound like the lost house band from David Mancuso's Loft parties: Richard Youngs' uplifting, gospel-tinged lyrics talk about moving beyond, universal truths, sailing through the horizon. It's a wide-eyed optimism Mancuso would perhaps have approved of and which is embroidered with spectral details that begs to be auditioned on large, tweaked out sound-systems."

SIASSIA & TOKOBINA Siassia & Tokobina EP 12"
Restocked. "A new label from Hugo Mendez, co-founder of Sofrito! A series dedicated to cross-cultural experimentation, kicking off with this exhilarating dive into the African underground of 1980s Paris: a four-track EP from Congolese singer Albert Siassia, backed by a group of young French dreads, rechristened Tokobina -- "let's dance," in Lingala -- for the occasion. A mixture of post-punk, rumba, afro-disco and reggae, in two dancefloor sure-shots reviving their sole 12" from back in the day, plus previously unreleased fire from the same session. Ribbit."

APPLES, THE Mind Twister LP
2018 repress; LP version. Odion Livingstone present another reissue from the Nigerian archives, the first ever international release of The Apples' essential Afro-funk rarity Mind Twister, originally released in 1978. As part of the St Gregory's student band scene in Lagos during the late '70s alongside Ofege, Grotto, and more, Apples were picked up and produced by legendary EMI Nigeria producer Odion Iruoje who added overdubs to the album at Abbey Road in London with Curved Air keyboardist Francis Monkman. The band met and formed in Lagos. Bandleader Frank Ikpefuran teamed up with Georges Vieira from the American School and brothers Clifford and Gerard Nagi who were studying at St Greg's in Lagos, and remembers, "I must have been 19 years old when I met Clifford. We used to hangout on Victoria Island, watching bands play and jamming with them. That's how we met Georges. We all listened to Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Idris Muhammad and the Beatles." "We started jamming with Clifford on the guitar, his brother Gerard on the bass and Georges on the guitar. We chipped in with song ideas, with the group contributing arrangements and refining things until we were satisfied. The band had a natural sound, which stemmed from the chemistry we had. It was a strange chemistry, we were an odd combination from different backgrounds but when we played, something happened..." After landing a residency at Tee Mac's club in Surulere, Apples auditioned for Odion Iruoje who arranged recording dates and cut the record. For a young band, Iruoje was surprised by the quality of the band, adding in extra keyboard parts from Lemmy Udofia and Francis Monkman, founder of Curved Air and session man for Kate Bush, Sky, and music libraries like BBC Music, Bruton, and KPM. Iruoje remembers, "their playing added a layer of sophistication and sheen without encumbering proceedings." This definitive edition of Apples' Mind Twister features new interviews with bandleader Frank Ikpefuran and producer Odion Iruoje. Fully remastered by The Carvery.

UT Early Live Life CD
"Early Live Life is a compilation of some of UT's best live performances from 1979-1985, spanning their origins in New York City to their migration to London in late 1981. The CD also includes the addition of a 1981 gig at The Venue in London, originally released as the cassette UT Live At The Venue in early 1982 and reissued on vinyl for Record Store Day in April 2018. The UT reissue campaign began on November 17, 2017 with the release of UT and Confidential. Upcoming reissues in 2019 include their studio albums Conviction, In Gut's House, and Griller. Remastered at Wolf Studios by Dominique Brethes, vinyl cut by Noel Summerville. The live tracks jump out of the vinyl with some verve, as visceral now as they were live back in the '80s. This is searing no-wave power in the live setting, originally released in 1987 by Blast First Records."

Prelude EP is the inceptive release of Oxmose, a dialogue between two composers; a conversation that traces the line between abstract, electronic experimentalism, and glittering interpretive jazz. Parisian producer Shcaa takes control of Side A with "Core"; a near 20 minutes exploration into sound, which skirts the fringes of avant-garde minimalism and experimental rhythms. Side B sees Romanian artist Traian Chereches offer up an absorbing counterpoint to Shcaa's opener on "Cage". The energy of Chereches' rebuttal fuses organic and interpretive sounds into a deft jazz reinterpretation, revealing a wide and surprising cinematic ambience.

OBJEKT Cocoon Crush 2LP
Double LP version. Objekt has continued to challenge conventions with his club output (Objekt #4 (2017) and Kern Vol. 3 (KERN 003CD, 2016)), while maintaining his reputation as a DJ who deploys impeccable technical finesse in crafting elaborate narratives from a diverse and challenging palette of electronic music. Written between 2014 and 2018 in Berlin and on the road, Cocoon Crush once again sees Objekt jettisoning the functional requirements of the dancefloor. Marking a further evolution from the youthful exuberance of Flatland (PAN 060CD/LP, 2014), Cocoon Crush explores a more introspective side, with themes of human interaction resonating throughout the record as it ruminates on a spectrum of complex moods rooted in four years of sometimes turbulent personal experience. Cocoon Crush represents an aesthetic departure from Flatland's largely synthetic tonality, drawing from organic source material and natural textures to illustrate perplexing and unfamiliar sceneries in photorealistic detail. On Cocoon Crush, Objekt diverges further still from his musical influences to craft the purest manifestation of his own musical personality to date: an intriguing and enigmatic album whose reference points are hard to pin down, in which ghostly synth passages weave through mind-bending, weighty drums, and ASMR-triggering Foley collages scrape and sparkle. Through meticulous sculpting, Objekt traces a rich and impressionistic journey through claustrophobia, hope, guilt, anxiety and joy, nested in layers of sonic detail which reward with every listen. Mastered by Rashad Becker, photography by Kasia Zacharko, and layout by Bill Kouligas.

JOMO: The joy of missing out. Bawrut is back in full original EP mode and he's making his debut on Pets Recordings. "Pioneers" is laced with syrupy spoken word; it's all about the physical and emotional reactions from a raw house groove. "Desert Island" is a dynamic acid attack riddled with rich levels of 303 funk. "Piano&Piano" brings you back to dry land with crunchy loops that somehow manage to ooze funk, soul, and staccato synth-stabbed drama in equal measure. "Your Job Is My Job" is another heady maze of trippy textures and psychedelic nods.

CHAOS IN THE CBD Midnight In Peckham 12"
Rhythm Section International presents Midnight In Peckham, the new EP from Chaos In The CBD. Born in New Zealand, but based in Peckham, literally around the corner from Henry Wu and Bradley Zero, these brothers have made a real mark on the scene in London. The duo's approach to production has matured immeasurably in the last year, as is evident in the restrained potency and poetic subtlety on the four tracks that comprise this accomplished EP. The record channels a delicate late night energy, equally indebted to Ron Trent as it is the hazy atmospheres of Burial.

HIRSCH, SCOTT Lost Time Behind The Moon CD
"Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist / producer Scott Hirsch has recorded a follow up to his critically acclaimed 2016 record, Blue Rider Songs. On Lost Time Behind The Moon, Hirsch chronicles confronting ghosts of the past, acknowledging that darkness rides alongside the light, and avoiding the pitfalls of regret. The record was recorded and produced by Hirsch with the help of Mike Coykendall (M Ward), and features musical guests William Tyler, Mikael Jorgensen (Wilco), Orpheo McCord (Edward Sharpe), Jimmy Calire (America) and Jesse Siebenberg (Lukas Nelson, Supertramp). Scott Hirsch's name is one you'll find lurking in the liner notes of many admired recordings from the late 1990s to the present. As a founding member of Hiss Golden Messenger, he was integral to the band's first five records, lending his sonic imprint on their productions, as well as shaping the sound of the live outfit, having toured heavily through the formative years of the band. Much of this work is reflected on the forthcoming Merge Records box set entitled Devotion: Songs About Rivers And Spirits And Children. Along the way he produced and played on records by Kim Krans' Family Band, as well as recording a Grammy-nominated record by the legendary folksinger Alice Gerrard. Having stepped off the demanding tour schedule of Hiss in 2016, new pathways opened up for Hirsch to fully engage in the craft of songwriting. On this second record, his production tones and songwriting talents are in full bloom."

BLUMM & NILS FRAHM, F.S. Tag Eins Tag Zwei LP
Originally released in 2016. Followers of the Sonic Pieces catalog will already be familiar with the individuals of F.S.Blumm and Nils Frahm as well as their acclaimed work as a duo. But even though they're making use of familiar instruments, their album Tag Eins Tag Zwei manages to add a new tone to their already unique language. By trading their post-processed sound sculptures that made up the two preceding albums in for intimate pieces of improvisation, this collaboration merges into the most soothing and life-affirming recording the two have produced so far. Guitars and toys are flowing next to piano and harmonium like an organic combination, shaping nine suits that abnegate any common categorization. Involving classical, jazz, and folk influences it's the genuine use of tricks and delays that lift these improvisations above the ordinary and makes them both incredibly relaxing and exciting at the same time. It is almost ironic that by capturing accidental moments of free playing, Frank and Nils are succeeding at an even more impressive scale than their already highly satisfying previous output. The result delivers a perfect example of how immediacy can be the most powerful approach to creating music. Based on a remarkable understanding of each other's phrasing the pair of sessions that comprises this album shows two vivid artists at the peak of their game: Unconditional spontaneity. This LP reissue is presented in a reversed cardboard jacket, printed in- and outside with full tone colors; includes a printed inner sleeve with the original artwork.

VA Astral Daze: Psychedelic South African Rock 1968-1972 LP
This collection brings together rarities from well-known artists like Abstract Truth, Suck, Otis Waygood, Freedom's Children, John & Philipa Cooper, McCully Workshop and Hawk, as well as lesser known acts like Buzzard, The Fireflies, The Idiots, Tidal Wave, and The Invaders. Although the South African rock movement of the late sixties and early seventies was not a major commercial success, its participants heralded an exciting new age in South African rock and started a movement aimed at changing the musical tastes of fans in a spectacular way. Stadium concerts became the vehicle for feeding the youth with heavier rock sounds, and behind studio glass were producers like Clive Calder, Billy Forrest, Graham Beggs and Selwyn Miller who acted as change agents to transform conventional pop into heavier four to five minute songs. The movement's struggle for recognition through airplay remained unanswered and only the true fans of rock knew about their existence. Licensed by the Fresh Music label in South Africa and available on vinyl for the first time, complete with insert and liner notes.
