PARKER, BOBBY Soul Of The Blues 2CD
Virtuoso blues guitarist Bobby Parker inspired John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Jimmy Page, and many others yet it has taken 66 years since his recording debut for a vinyl LP compilation to be issued under his name. The opening track "Watch Your Step" was played on stage by the Beatles in their Hamburg days who by their own admission, took its riff to fashion the opening to "I Feel Fine". And let's not forget Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick", which borrowed that same riff. What a great soulful blues singer Bobby Parker was too. From his 1956 recording of "Titanic", to 1969's "It's Hard But It's Fair", the latest cut on this album, Rhythm And Blues present some unforgettable vocal performances plus two instrumentals that showcase his unique way of playing the blues. Bobby Parker originals are hard to come by -- apart from the hit "Watch Your Step", everything else is a valuable collector's item. But this compilation brings them all together in one box and the label promises a treat is in store for you.

VA Soho Scene 66-67 (Jazz Goes Mod) 4CD
1966-1967. Two years of seismic change in UK history, a time of World Cup wins, of psychedelic "happenings" and Sgt. Pepper, when London's streets rocked to the sight of mini skirts and Mini Coopers and home-made British pop culture -- drawing in everything from satire to sitars -- really did look likely to change the world. British jazz was growing too. Having defined itself through the razor-sharp cool of "modernism", by '66 it was ready to loosen its collar and let its hair down, feeding directly from an anarchic new breed of young musicians able to move between styles as never before, allowing everything from the avant-garde to R&B color their work. London was now swinging in every direction, like some vast kaleidoscopic merry-go-round. This, then, is the story of those British jazzmen who came along for the ride, some clinging on with white-knuckles and gritted teeth, others enjoying the trip of their lives.Features Humphrey Lyttelton, Ian Hamer Sextet, Mike Carr Trio, Tubby Hayes Quartet, Gordon Beck Trio, Rendell/Carr Quintet, Ronnie Scott, Stan Tracey Quartet, Michael Garrick Sextet, The Les Condon Quartet, John Surman Quartet, Alex Welsh & His Band, Johnny Scott & Orchestra, Danny Moss, Ronnie Ross, Kenny Clare & Ronnie Stephenson, Neil Ardley New Jazz, Rollins, Tracey, Goldberg, Laird, Seamen, Freddie McCoy, Jimmy Coe, Charlie Earland, Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers, Jimmy Tillman Quartet, Les McCann Ltd, Gabor Szabo, Milt Jackson, Merle Saunders, Prince Lasha Ensemble, Hugh Masekela, Richard "Groove" Holmes, The Three Sounds, Birds Of Paradise, Freddie Roach, Jimmy McGriff, Sarah Cantine & Her Trio, Eric Kloss Ken Jensen Quartet, Gene Ludwig, Milt Sealey Trio, Kenny Rankin, Harry South Big Band, Carmen McRae w. WOLFHOUNDS, THE Electric Music (Yellow Vinyl) LP
Yellow vinyl version. Electric Music is The Wolfhounds' follow-up to the Untied Kingdom on Optic Nerve (OPT4 032CD, 2016) and The Complete John Peel Sessions (2018). Having now been recording and gigging for longer than their original 1980s incarnation, The Wolfhounds continue to hone the blade of their sound to outclass their whippersnapper competitors on Electric Music. From the desperate narrator of the opening anthem "Can't See The Light", unable to see an end to his descent into darkness to the sad urban reminiscences of the rural immigrant in "Song Of The Afghan Shopkeeper" and the unwilling draftee in "Pointless Killing", to the powerlessness of people tossed around on the waves of history and progress in "Like Driftwood" -- Wolfhounds ask where our emotional and actual lives are heading, as the world seemingly freefalls into barbarism. With the dreaded feeling that "Lightning's Going To Strike Again", you lack even the appealing soundtrack to the catastrophe of the past described in "... and Electric Music", and the band ask will "The Roaches" once more rule the world (if they ever stopped)? Is the solution to "Stand Apart" from the chaotic crowd or admit, cynically, that "We Don't Believe Anything" and roll with the movements of the masses? Featuring the glowing sleeve notes of comedian Stewart Lee, and a new expanded line-up including electric violin and bassoon from Scritti Politti's Rhodri Marsden, and peppered with the barbed lyrics and stinging guitar of David Lance Callahan and the home-made hybrid stringed instruments of guitarist Andy Golding, the Wolfhounds have never sounded more alive, energetic, and contemporary.

VA West Meets East: Indian Music And Its Influence On The West 3CD
"In the fifties, the influence of Indian music on the West manifested itself in the work of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman: pioneer jazz musicians of a golden generation who were fascinated by its form and how it worked as a model of improvisation, the skill that lay at the heart of their own art. A decade later, it took the Beatles to catapult Indian music to the forefront of public awareness and make the sound of the sitar a common feature of popular culture in the West. Their engagement with the ancient classical music of the subcontinent started an avalanche of similar experiments in the rock and pop world, engendering what Ravi Shankar called 'the Sitar Explosion'. For a while, the sitar or some other element from Indian music was increasingly heard in the background of general texture of recordings by many famous British groups: the Rolling Stones, Traffic, Kinks, Yardbirds, to name but a few, while musicians working in the domestic folk-rock field such as Pentangle, the Incredible String Band, and the guitarist Davy Graham also picked up on it. In the United States, aspects of Indian music would be absorbed both by such psychedelic bands as The Byrds, The Doors, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane and by composers of new music, the minimalists: Terry Riley, La Monte Young, Steve Reich and Philip Glass. But Western fascination with Orientalism was not entirely new; its piquancy is evident in the works of such impressionists as Claude Debussy, Benjamin Britten and Maurice Ravel, a composer considered to be the father of Exotica, whose sound world is at the heart of the works of Exotica's most formidable icons, Les Baxter and Martin Denny. This presentation comprises key recordings by major Western jazz, exotica and classical artists under the spell of Indian music and culture, combined with the long, perfumed recordings by Ravi Shankar and his Indian contemporaries which most influenced them."

GROSSKOPF, HARALD Synthesist LP
2020 repress; LP version. "Harald Grosskopf was in his early twenties when LSD 'blew [his] reality away,' as he recalls. Born in Hildesheim in 1949, he had previously drummed in fairly conventional rock bands, most recently for Wallenstein. Their label-boss Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser was fond of facilitating jam sessions for musicians on his Ohr und Pilz label, often supplying his 'cosmic couriers' with LSD (unbeknown to them, on occasion). In one such session, the drug inspired something of an epiphany in Grosskopf: 'There I was playing the drums when, in the midst of my euphoria, I realized that I had been imitating other drummers. Suddenly a voice spoke to me: stop trying to sound like Billy Cobham or Ginger Baker. From that moment on I felt liberated, free to drum without having to shine in a particular role.' Having discovered his own musical identity, Harald Grosskopf understood that a standard rock combo was not the ideal conduit through which to express it. Grosskopf: 'I was completely in thrall to electronic music and the total freedom that it offered. This was the music I wanted to create. I knew it would be a success, the energy levels were so high.' Grosskopf consequently left Wallenstein. 'I fell into a hole at first, wondering what I was going to do. So I sold my prized drum kit and used the money to buy a guitar, amp and echo device.' A few days later, the doorbell rang. It was Manuel Göttsching, on his way back to Berlin from a tour of France. They knew each other from Berlin's electronic scene and recording sessions for the likes of Ash Ra Tempel. Göttsching invited Grosskopf to sign up for his new project Ashra and the rest is history: Ashra (Grosskopf, Gottsching, Lutz Ulbrich alias Luul) released a series of successful albums in the years that followed. It was not until the summer of 1979, however, that he finally felt ready to release a solo album. Synthesist comprises eight instrumentals, recorded largely by Grosskopf on his own. His melodies, carried along by synthesizers and drums, were reminiscent of works by Berlin electronic friends such as Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, as well as those 'cosmic' sessions of the early 1970s -- yet each melody retains a unique timbre. Synthesist is thus regarded as a classic by electronic music enthusiasts all over the world, evoking a thrilling musical era of the past with equal capacity to excite today." --Christoph Dallach

RAS ALLAH Showcase CD
"Keith Blake was born in St. Elizabeth, and raised in Greenwich Town, Kingston, Jamaica, Ras Allah's career began in the vocal group The Leaders, who recorded three tracks for producer Joe Gibbs in the late 1960s. When The Leaders broke up, he continued to work with Gibbs, who issued his debut solo release, Woo Oh Oh. In the mid-1970s he released a single 'Born a Fighter' for producer Teddy Powell, before working with Bertram Brown's Freedom Sounds, with a series of recordings, under the name Prince Alla, that are now regarded as roots reggae classics, such as 'Sun Is Shining', 'Bucket Bottom', 'Lot's Wife', and 'Stone'. He also recorded for producer Tapper Zukie, including the album Heaven Is My Roof. Continuing interest in his work saw the release of two albums of material from the 1970s on Blood & Fire records, Only Love Can Conquer and I Can Hear The Children Singing, which brought his work to a new audience. Allah continued to release records occasionally through the 1980s and 1990s, including an album with Jah Shaka, as well as this album. He has continued to be in demand and since 2010 has been touring the world."

DYLAN, BOB John Wesley Harding (2010 Mono Version) LP
2017 German pressing, repress of 2010 Music on Vinyl label mono masters. Dylan's eighth studio album, released in 1967. "A calm, reflective album, John Wesley Harding strips away all of the wilder tendencies of Dylan's rock albums -- even the then-unreleased Basement Tapes he made the previous year -- but it isn't a return to his folk roots. If anything, the album is his first serious foray into country, but only a handful of songs, such as 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight,' are straight country songs. Instead, John Wesley Harding is informed by the rustic sound of country, as well as many rural myths, with seemingly simple songs like 'All Along the Watchtower,' 'I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine,' and 'The Wicked Messenger' revealing several layers of meaning with repeated plays." --All Music Guide

KOWALD QUINTET, PETER Peter Kowald Quintet CD
Reissue, originally released in 1973. The only LP featuring a band under Peter Kowald's name, Peter Kowald Quintet comes from a vital moment in the German bassist's career. A close colleague of Peter Brötzmann's in their formative years, including the saxophonist's debut For Adolphe Sax (1967) and the classic Machine Gun (1968), Kowald had by 1972 broadened his circle of collaborators, eventually working with a who's who of global creative music. Recorded live in Berlin, released on FMP, this date documents a tensile ensemble, with an unusual lineup featuring two trombones -- Londoner Paul Rutherford and the German maestro Günter Christmann -- together with the less-well-known Dutch alto saxophonist (and sculptor) Peter van de Locht and brilliant German percussionist Paul Lovens. Kowald adds to the low brass when he turns from double-bass to tuba and alphorn. Spacious and fiery, these four tracks are exemplary European free music led by one of the music's foremost originals -- Kowald's rough and ready bass, which was anchoring (and de facto leading) the Globe Unity Orchestra of that period, is echoed in the take-no-prisoners music of the fivesome. Mastered from original tapes, this first-ever CD release features a facsimile version of the original cover, which featured artwork by ten non-musician friends and unique hand-additions.

SUN RA AND HIS SOLAR MYTH ARKESTRA The Solar-Myth Approach (Vol. 1 & 2) 2CD
Two certifiable Sun Ra classics refreshed and renewed and rolled into the perfect package. First released on the French label BYG/Actuel in 1971, the companion volumes of The Solar-Myth Approach were essential in introducing Ra's monumental program to an international audience. As with many Arkestra records, the information on these gatefold packages was dubious at best. Here they appear with corrected lineups and dates, showing that the music actually stretches back to the early 1960s, but was assembled into a beautiful chronological mosaic that serves as a gripping survey of early-post-Chicago Ra. It's an ideal way to start listening to his music, and for his fans absolutely essential items in the gargantuan discography. These LPs have been reissued a number of times since BYG/Actuel folded, and with each new batch the fidelity has diminished, so that they've been a pale shadow of the original recordings. For the first time, the sound has been lovingly restored to a previously unimagined level of omniversal fidelity, and one track ("Scene 1 Take 1") that was mastered at the wrong speed on the original -- perhaps a Ra idea, perhaps just a disconnect between the producers and the composer -- has been included as a bonus track remastered at the corrected speed. Packaged in the glorious original LP designs, with a definitive essay by Irwin Chusid, this is The Solar-Myth Approach as it was meant to be experienced.

WACHSMANN, PHIL Writing In Water CD
Reissue, originally released in 1985. Gentle, incisive solo music for violin and electronics by one of the unsung giants of free improvisation. Philipp Wachsmann emerged in the fertile mid '70s underground free music scene in London, playing with everyone from Simon Mayo to Barry Guy to Derek Bailey to Evan Parker, starting a band called Chamberpot, making albums for the collective artist-run label he managed: Bead Records. These LPs, 26 of them in total, were made in tiny batches and are now rare as hen's teeth. Writing In Water, which was recorded in 1984, is the first of a series of Corbett vs. Dempsey reissues dedicated to the label, crucial chroniclers of British improvised music. Two side-long tracks are extremely patient, multi-layered, sometimes hushed, ultimately beautiful. Long out of print and never before on CD. Exact facsimile cover. Edition of 500.

PAPILLON Banco LP
After his debut album for Discrepant, Papillon (CREP 009LP, 2013), and a couple of tapes for Dinzu Artefacts (Aqueducts, 2017) and Sucata Tapes (Cercueill Flottant, 2019 (SUC 022CS)), Papillon aka Gonçalo F. Cardoso returns to the wax treatment for one last hurrah into the depths of tropical disquiet. Taking liberties from Henri Charriere's book sequel of the same name, Banco (1972), the audio reader here dives straight up/down into a world of random dream logic. The same themes of nightmare vs. paradisiac dreams are present here yet with more nuance than the first volume. The adventure here is more subdued, less spiritual as most of it is lived outdoors, free from the state's shackles of abuse. A lighter tone then, for what will probably be the last Papillon adventure. As with the first volume the album counts with contributions from fellow label artists, Mike Cooper, Cédric Stevens, David Daan, and Yannick Dauby all feature in a way or another, raw or cooked into a boiling pot of irreverence. All tracks were composed and edited by Gonçalo F Cardoso in the island of La Gomera, Lisbon and London between 2017-2019. Mastered by Rashad Becker. Edition of 300.

"Originally released by Creole Records in 1978, Roots Rock Reggae primarily served as a showcase vehicle for the most recent productions of Phil Mathias and his Big Phil label. Comprising 14 tracks of the highest quality, the album featured some of Jamaica's leading talent, notably the In Crowd, Cornel Campbell, Sugar Minott, Delroy Wilson and Leroy Smart. Released in a number of countries around the globe, the LP proved a best-seller, but despite its popularity and rich musical content, it subsequently remained unavailable until the early 1990s when it was re-issued in Germany in limited numbers. BYLES, JUNIOR Beat Down Babylon 2CD
"Released in 1972, the Junior Byles single Beat Down Babylon provided one of the clearest indications to date of the impending roots sound that would soon dominate reggae. The immense popularity of the Lee 'Scratch' Perry-produced 45, both in Jamaica and the UK, swiftly prompted a best-selling long-player of the same title, issued later that year. Comprising ten of the singer-songwriter's recent recordings for the mighty Upsetter, the LP has since been re-issued on vinyl on a number of occasions, but has never been officially made available on CD until now. Now, at long last, Beat Down Babylon does finally make it onto the format, with the original track-listing bolstered by the remainder of Byles' released work for Perry, which includes numerous Jamaican hits, most notably the 1974 smash, 'Curley Locks'."

CHOSEN FEW, THE The Trojan Albums Collection 2CD
"Soon after forming in the late Sixties, the Chosen Few became widely regarded as one the most accomplished harmony groups on the Jamaican music scene, as demonstrated by a series of hits for local producers, Derrick Harriott and 'Prince' Tony. A subsequent collaboration with Florida-based ex-pat, Noel Williams aka King Sporty spawned the reggae-funk masterpiece, 'In Miami' featuring backing from leading soul outfit K.C. & the Sunshine Band. The enduring popularity of the quartet, comprising Franklyn Spence and the three Browns -- Busty, Noel and Errol -- was demonstrated by the release of three acclaimed long players between 1973 and 1975, all of which were issued in the UK by the country's premier Jamaican music record company, Trojan Records. VA Reggae Power 2CD
"By the close of the Sixties, record retailer and jukebox businessman Karl 'J.J.' Johnson was firmly established as one of Jamaica's leading record producers, having released a string of best-selling rock steady and proto-reggae 45s by such noted local acts as Lee 'Scratch' Perry, the Rulers, Carl Dawkins, the Kingstonians and the Ethiopians. Early in 1969, a lucrative agreement with British record label, Trojan, emboldened the ambitious entrepreneur to release an album comprising a dozen of his latest recordings in the new reggae style. Entitled Reggae Power, the LP was dominated by regular hit-makers, the Ethiopians, whose recent singles had proved so popular in Britain that the group had been prompted to make a promotional tour of the country. Their trip led to Trojan dramatically reworking the Reggae Power long-player for its UK release, replacing all but two non-Ethiopians tracks with further J.J.-produced works by the trio, before issuing it in new artwork. But with the Ethiopians collection already available on the Doctor Bird CD, Reggae Power & Woman Capture Man, it is the Jamaican version of the album that provides the inspiration for this exciting double-disc compilation, which collects the bulk of J.J. Johnson's output from 1968 to 1972, including numerous reggae hits and 17 recordings new to CD."

LOVE SCULPTURE Forms and Feelings (Remastered & Expanded) CD
"Dave Edmunds' importance in the history of Welsh rock music cannot be understated. In the 70's he became an icon recording for Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label and working with George Harrison. Edmunds' recording career began with the trio Love Sculpture, revealing Edmunds to be a guitar hero of extreme prowess. After a first single released under the name The Human Beans the band became Love Sculpture and recorded Blues Helping, a classic album of Blues Rock for EMI's Parlophone label. In 1969 the band veered to a more underground direction to record their classic top ten hit 'Sabre Dance', championed by DJ John Peel. The ensuing album (engineered by future Yes producer Eddie Offord) was equally stunning. Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the re-press of this expanded Forms and Feelings."

WOOD & WIZZARD, ROY Main Street (Expanded & Remastered) CD
"Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a new re-mastered edition of the legendary, mysteriously shelved album Main Street by Roy Wood & Wizzard. After earning success as a performer and songwriter with The Move, The Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard, the supremely talented Roy Wood recorded the material for what should have been his third solo album in the Spring of 1976. The album was originally intended to have been released under the title Wizzo and was to have showcased a different musical side to Roy Wood and his band, with the material taking on a more jazz-rock influence. The resulting album was a magnificent work and showcased the multi-faceted talent of Wood. A single, 'Indiana Rainbow' was released by Jet Records in 1976 but failed to gain airplay or commercial traction and so the release of the album was shelved. Roy Wood later reflected: 'The album was probably a last attempt to retain some sort of sanity, trying to grow up, and not carry on indefinitely being just another pop group'. In 1999 the master tapes were re-discovered and Main Street finally saw the light of day for the first time on CD. However, the title was deleted within a few years and has remained unavailable for nearly two decades. This welcome Esoteric Recordings edition has been newly re-mastered and includes the bonus track 'Human Cannonball' which was recorded during the album sessions. The release also restores the original artwork and features a new essay."

FLUENCE Fluence LP
Restocked; RSD 2020 release. "Fluence is the brainchild and first release of sound artist / provocateur Pascal Comelade. Recorded in Montpellier, France in 1974-1975, the project consists of exploratory electronic pieces in the Fripp & Eno vernacular with a Kosmische tinge. 'A Few Reasons To Stay / A Few Reasons To Split,' a title inspired by Swiss conceptual artist Urs Lüthi, features Comelade's kaleidoscopic arpeggios and Richard Pinhas' howling guitar, which variously resembles a dreamlike cello and ghostly human moans. 'Barcelona Tango's' off-kilter exotica with pocket trumpet and looping drum beats foreshadows Comelade's later work, which would create a stir in some avant-garde circles for his use of unorthodox instruments (plastic saxophone, toy piano, etc.) On the side-long 'Schizo,' Comelade's electric organ with probing, Terry Riley-esque swooshes collides with Gabriel Ibanez's thick, reedy buzz -- together forming a truly magical soundscape. These incendiary performances ably join the ranks of other dreamily cosmic, impressionistic guitar-and-synth masterworks like No Pussyfooting and The Serpent (In Quicksilver) as well as Conny Veit's work with Popol Vuh. Originally released in 1975, Fluence offers a remarkable emotional and textural range -- richly experimental and deeply progressive -- that sounds at once timeless and strikingly contemporary. This first-time standalone reissue is limited to 750 numbered copies."

EDIKANFO The Pace Setters CD
Glitterbeat present the first-ever reissue of The Pace Setters, the classic 1981 debut album from this much revered Ghanaian band Edikanfo. Vibrantly produced by British sound explorer Brian Eno in Accra, Ghana. Highlife meets Afro-funk. Almost four decades after a coup d'état in Ghana prematurely halted their career, Edikanfo's surviving band members are at last gearing up to reissue and tour The Pace Setters. Features exclusive liner notes from Eno and an extensive interview with Edikanfo band leader, Gilbert Amartey Amar. In 1981, London-based E.G. Records released the debut album from a young Ghanaian group called Edikanfo. The eight-piece band was the last group to be managed by the late Faisal Helwani, a charismatic impresario who was based at the popular Napoleon Club in Osu, a suburb in Ghana's teeming capital Accra. Edikanfo quickly rose to international notoriety following the release of The Pace Setters because of the infectious, forward-looking highlife meets Afro-funk synthesis the band committed to tape. But the album also caught an additional wind of publicity due to its producer, the already legendary British musician and sound conceptualist Brian Eno. During that time, Eno was researching and openly propagating West African music. He recently collaborated with Talking Heads on Remain in Light (1980) and with Talking Heads frontman David Byrne on My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (1981). Eno and Edikanfo's work together at Studio One in Accra (Ghana) was yet another inspired morphing of soundworlds and processes and a significant touchstone for both artists. Just when the sky seemed the limit for Edikanfo, the coup d'état in Ghana on the last day of 1981, tragically put the brakes on the band's quickly developing fortunes. For years after that, the country endured enforced curfews at night, which of course ultimately gutted the live music scene in Accra and elsewhere. Because of this and other financial setbacks, the band ceased activity and its members spread out in exile, all over the world. Now, almost four decades later, Edikanfo has returned. And with its surviving members gearing up to reissue and tour their classic 1981 album, The Pace Setters, the band is once again excitedly pointed towards the future. Bassist, songwriter and founding member Gilbert Amartey Amar, popularly known as Chi-Kin-Chee, talked to the label from Accra, Ghana where he is currently rehearsing Edikanfo and preparing for an upcoming European tour -- the group's first ever.

SAAMI, USTAD Pakistan Is for the Peaceful CD
Following his critically acclaimed debut, God Is Not a Terrorist (GB 067CD/LP, 2019), 49-note scale microtonal vocal master Ustad Saami returns with an epic part two. Pakistan Is for the Peaceful presents an even more immersive work, comprised of just three extended tracks and again produced 100% live at the master's rooftop home in Karachi by Grammy-winner Ian Brennan, with musical accompaniment provided by Ustad's four sons: Rauf (group leader, harmonium, vocals), Urooj (primary response vocalist, tambura number one), Ahmed (tambura number two, vocals), and Azeem (tablas, vocals). Ustad Saami is the last living surti master, a precursor of the ancient Islamic devotional music of qawwali. Despite being under constant threat from Islamic fundamentalists, the master has spent his life as a dedicated practitioner of a vanishing art -- one that has been passed on from generation to generation since the 13th century. The seventh release from Glitterbeat's acclaimed Hidden Musics series."At age seventy-six, Ustad still practices from 4 AM to noon most days, drilling himself with exercises. Though his physical hearing has declined and he requires in-ear aids for daily communication, his powers of perception continue to rise. As a child, he was the chosen one from his family and his master forbade him to speak for years. During this period, he was only allowed to express himself vocally, not verbally. He studied for 35 years to perfect this system before he ever even stepped onstage. It was the same trajectory as puff pop-stars, only inverted -- they start performing prematurely and get even more flaccid over time. Instead, Ustad explores the subtlety of human emotion through microtones, an attempt to turn "negatives positive" through the reclamation of those tones deemed out-of-tune. Following Saami's debut album, a World Music expert in Los Angeles was flummoxed that she could not find any reference to the master's system on the internet. Ironically, this absence of reference actually stands as proof rather than refuting his rarity. It cannot be found elsewhere precisely because it is his system -- a customized work of recovery -- with Ustad the only living vocal practitioner." --Ian Brennan

JULY The Complete Recordings 6CD BOX
"Released by the Major Minor label in 1968, the self-titled July album has long been acknowledged by genre enthusiasts as one of the classic UK psychedelic one-shots, mixing the ambition and experimentation of Sgt. Pepper with a lo-fi charm and endearing garage band artlessness. It is also one of the most hotly-pursued artefacts of the British psychedelic era, with an original UK copy (only graded at VG++) recently selling on eBay for around £3700. Our definitive 6-CD overview of the band's activities includes newly-remastered versions of the album in both mono and stereo formats (the latter only previously available on the original 1968 American release) as well as the various single issues, including a completely different recording of album nugget 'The Way'. Disc Three contains The Second Of July, a collection of pre-album demos that appeared in the mid-Nineties to capitalise on the band's growing reputation as original copies of their LP began to sell for increasingly large sums of money. The remainder of the boxed set consists of more recent July recordings following their triumphant return to live work a few years ago. Disc Four is the aborted album Temporal Anomaly, which was recorded circa 2010 but which gains a first-ever release, while Disc 5 is the appropriately-titled Resurrection, which received a limited release in 2013. Disc Six comprises the latest July magnum opus, The Wight Album, which has been pieced together over the last few years by Tom Newman and Peter Cook at Tom's recording studio on the Isle of Wight. Now finally completed, The Wight Album -- described by Tom as 'the greatest July album' -- brings the July story bang up to date. Housed in a clamshell box, and with a 40-page booklet containing a 7000-word essay on the band featuring new quotes and some priceless period photos, The Complete Recordings is an epic look at the studio activities of one of the biggest cults to emerge from the original British psychedelic scene."

ASAKAWA, MAKI Maki Asakawa 2LP
2020 restock; Double LP version. A stunning survey of the 1970s heyday of great Japanese singer and countercultural icon Maki Asakawa (1942-2010). Deep-indigo, dead-of-night enka, folk, and blues, inhaling Billie Holiday and Nina Simone down to the bone. A traditional waltz abuts Nico-style incantation; defamiliarized versions of Oscar Brown Jr. and Bessie Smith collide with big-band experiments alongside poet Sh?ji Terayama; a sitar-led psychedelic wig-out runs into a killer excursion in modal, spiritual jazz. Existentialism and noir, mystery and allure, hurt and hauteur. With excellent notes by Alan Cummings and the fabulous photographs of Hitoshi Jin Tamura. "Japan's answer to Scott Walker, with a visual aesthetic and a death-decadent appeal that is straight out of the Keiji Haino songbook." --Volcanic Tongue

Limited restock; double LP version. Gatefold sleeve; features two vinyl-only tracks from Jackie McLean & The Cosmic Brotherhood and Michael Carvin; includes download card. Subtitled: Esoteric, modal and progressive jazz from the SteepleChase label, 1974-84. Founded in 1972, SteepleChase Records is one of the most significant and prolific European jazz record labels. With a catalog running to well over 200 titles, the Copenhagen-based imprint has recorded and released music from some of the greatest names in jazz, including Dexter Gordon, Andrew Hill, Jackie McLean, Horace Parlan, Chet Baker, and Stan Getz. Starting out by recording visiting Americans when they performed at the legendary Café Montmartre, founder Nils Winther was encouraged to start the label by none other than the great Jackie McLean, who was the first artist to release a record on the new imprint. From there, Steeplechase rapidly grew into one of the foremost labels to document European jazz with all its distinctive originality and style. With a particular emphasis on recording front rank American artists who had chosen the expatriate life in Europe, Steeplechase was first in line to document the sounds of the greats as they developed in exile. Photos from the recording sessions and cover art from each of the LPs from which Jazzman Records' selection has been taken is also included. KONSTRUKTIVISTS Sevent Soviet Symphony CD
"Konstruktivists was formed by Glenn Michael Wallis in 1982 out of the ashes of Heute, a kraut rock influenced trio using electronics as well as conventional guitars and bass. Around this time -- in the late 70s/early 80s Glenn Michael Wallis was heavily involved with Throbbing Gristle, the U.K. pioneers of 'Industrial'. The first Konstruktivists vinyl album A Dissembly was issued in 1983. This was quickly followed by their seminal LP Psykho Genetika after signing to the newly-formed Third Mind records. At this point Glenn also moonlighted as a part-time member of Whitehouse -- playing live with them in several countries and participating on their LP Great White Death. 1984 saw the release of Black December, a more rhythm-oriented album, and the year after the Chris Carter produced masterpiece Glennascaul. After a seven-year hiatus, the band returned on World Serpent with the album Forbidden and the club hit single 'Tic Tac Toe'. With Mark Crumby joining in 1997 the band made a move towards a Techno kind of sound. Sevent Soviet Symphony is a Glenn Wallis solo recording that came out on the band's own Interior Recordings label in a micro edition of a handful CDRs in 2009. It picks up where The Last Moments Of 1923 ended -- up to this day, Glenn's favorite Konstruktivist recording. Dark atmospheric soundscapes dominate the mood. An outstanding vocal performance comes in late during the album. In our opinion an overlooked masterpiece by this influential UK Industrial group."

TIETCHENS, ASMUS Raum 318 CD
"Asmus Tietchens is a sound artist and composer from Hamburg, Germany. He got interested in Musique Concrete by listening to a German radio program when he was 10 years old. In 1965, at the age of 18, Asmus started experimenting with tape loops and turned them into musical collages. Soon, the use of synthesizers was added. In 1980 his debut album Nachtstücke was released, produced by Peter Baumann of Tangerine Dream. This was soon followed by a series of albums of electronic pop music for the Sky label, home of many Krautrock bands. Tietchens often uses special source materials for his compositions such as water (Seuchengebiete), human voices (Von Mund zu Mund), paper (Papier ist geduldig). He is associated with the Industrial music scene through his collaborations and releases on labels such as United Dairies, Esplendor Geometrico or Dom Records. Tietchens never studied composition, he has no academic background, everything he does is self-taught or learning by doing. Nevertheless, he was professor for sound design in Hamburg in recent years. Raum 318 was originally released on cassette only in 1991 on the E'ostrate label in France, in an edition of only 138 hand-numbered copies. It is a part of Tietchens' more Industrial sounding body of work and was remastered for this edition. In addition, a long previously unreelased bonus track has been added."

ASH RA TEMPEL Gin Rose at the Royal Festival Hall 2LP
"Ash Ra Tempel, the veterans of the German 'Berlin School', gained worldwide recognition with their album releases 1971-1973.Their self-titled debut-album from1971, in the line-up Hartmut Enke (bass), Manuel Göttsching (guitar), Klaus Schulze (drums), radically deconstructed elements of rock and blues, as it was combining electronic sounds to encourage new listening habits. Whilst Göttsching and Schulze later followed their solo careers, they always stayed friends and, over the decades, showed their musical solidarity in collaborations, with innovative electronics and guitar. But it was only in 2000, when they decided for this short intermezzo to perform together again under the Ash Ra Tempel banner. Julian Cope (author of Krautrock-Sampler) had invited Göttsching to his 'Cornucopia Festival' in London, and the two musicians took the offer as a great opportunity for a one-time reunion concert at the Royal Festival Hall on April 2, 2000. Preparing the music for this the concert had also led to a new studio album recording entitled Friendship. Both of the recordings, the studio album as well as the live recording from the London concert 'Gin Rosé', had been originally released in 2000 in a small edition, which was sold out very soon. The studio-album Friendship had already been re-released in 2014 (CD). Now, and due to the many requests, here it is again -- after 20 years, the re-release of the long-awaited live-album Gin Rosé. Göttsching and Schulze blend tradition and vision, and they do not simply reanimate ideas of the 1970s. The spirit of this unique liaison is reflected in every single note of this still up-to-date concert, showing these two musicians playing joyful, familiar and undeterred."

KMD Bl_ck B_st_rds 2LP
2020 repress. "Bl_ck B_st_rds was voted in Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists as the most notable rap album of all time that was never released commercially, and with good reason. The fact that this excellent album, slated for a 1994 release, did not seen the light of day until 2001 (its first issue - now out of print) testifies to a time when shortsighted industry backlashes against records that inflamed middle America were in vogue. Elektra Records higher-ups canned the project due to its controversial cover art, which shows a Sambo figure being lynched. This must-purchase concept album is worth the wait. From the jazzy, hypnotic samples on the title cut to 'Sweet Premium Wine,' a farcical ode to swigging 40-ounce bottles of brew (remember when drinking St. Ides and Old English was trendy?), you know you've found rap heaven. Classic headbanger 'What a Nigga Know?' (and the remix featuring partner-in-rhyme MF Grimm) is equally off the chain. 'Constipated Monkey' and weed anthem 'Suspended Animation' are testaments to a time in Rap music when experimental beats and obscure sampling ruled the roost. Bl_ck B_st_rds is where Brand Nubian meets De La Soul at the local bodega, heads wear Muslim kufis for kicks, and 'word to the mutha' actually refers to themes of pan-Africanism, repatriation, and reparations. It's a place where Sambo-ism doesn't sell. Features artwork and track listing from the original Ready Rock issue."

MOSCHOUTIS, MICHALIS Classical Mechanics CD
From Michalis Moschoutis: "Observing visual and auditory patterns of slowly moving objects, induces a comforting sense. Whether random or organized, complex or simple, intentional or incidental, seen, felt or listened to, most physical movements carry a reassuring message; the receiver is alive, earth is in orbit exerting a gravitational force upon all matter and time has a constant flow which can be measured through the periodic succession of physical phenomena. It was upon these fundamental principles that visual artist Roman Signer built a large body of fascinating works which have had a great impact on me since a young age . . . In the realm of sound, I was recently introduced by orchestra director and good friend Ilan Volkov, to the work of Pierre Berthet and Tetsuya Umeda. In 2018 I invited Pierre Berthet to perform at Borderline Festival and the following year, in the context of Tectonics Athens we programmed, together with Ilan Volkov, Umeda's solo show. Onstage, both artists explored various physical phenomena whose visual and auditory effects were of equal significance. Their seemingly meaningless actions bore an indefinable emotive strength and revealed a profound attachment of artists to sounding objects. As a listener I was totally immersed in the intensity of the moment and found meaning in intended and unintended actions and events . . . Being a bad liar in actual life, I've always inclined to transparent creative processes as experienced in the work of artists like Roman Signer, Pierre Berthet and Tetsuya Umeda. In a similar manner, I see this record as nothing more than a sonic imprint of a series of actions and reactions, assembled and composed into a four-track album. I perceive all of the following sounds simply as movements that have resonated within me over the past few years; the touch of contact microphones on various surfaces, vibrating strings loosened to the extend they no longer produce audible tones, myself swimming in the sea, the underwater crackling of rocks, Thalia Ioannidou's heavy breathing, Ingi Garðar Erlendsson's solo thranophone performance in Reykjavík in 2014, oscillating springs, rotating cymbals, subtle movements of tuning pegs and knobs, scrubbing of piano strings, Sofia Labropoulou playing with the mandals of her qanun, pressing keys, patting strings, moving pedals and knee levers of a pedal steel guitar, Ilan Manouach's close-mic'ed soprano saxophone and soft mouth sounds. With Classical Mechanics I invite the listener to an intimate space I find as immersive as a large venue resonating to the throbbing frequencies of a full-range PA."

FREAK HEAT WAVES Zap The Planet LP
"More than a decade ago, Freak Heat Waves emerged from Canada's stark Midwestern prairies, establishing their voice through early cassette-based experiments and DIY performances. Over the years, the group's live incarnations evolved as they endured a rigorous and nearly non-stop touring schedule. When not on the road, the Freaks became hermits, engaging in countless writing/production sessions that grew increasingly complex, eventually forcing them to travel beyond guitar, bass and drums. Their home studios continuously relocated, advanced and diversified. New instruments started to appear and new trajectories were explored. The studio process became more dynamic, involving many overdubs, avant-garde recording techniques, experimental sound design and orchestrations that utilized legendary effects, drum machines and synths. Tireless curiosity fueled the duo as they merged their original sound with new discoveries and seemingly disparate influences. With their latest work, Zap The Planet, the Freaks find themselves splitting coasts in Montreal and Victoria, distanced by geography and time, connecting via serial transmission tethered to a lone ethernet terminal. Extenuating logistics can unexpectedly prompt innovation. No Freak Heat Waves record has followed a singular path and no two are alike. Each album is an evolution in musical direction, songwriting and conceptualization. With Zap The Planet, (their second album on Telephone Explosion,) the duo has manifested more of their intrinsically unique vision and become more pronounced in their unhinged artistic process. The follow up to 2017's Beyond XXXL finds the Freaks taking a fearless, inventive leap to create the greatest departure from their previous work. There are no fads here, no accidents either. Freak Heat Waves give us a record full of lo-fi digital grit and early MIDI instrumentation. Dirty samples crackle as they skate over immense analog synths. Psychotropic rhythms plant roots and the timeless, signature Freak Heat Waves vocals serve as guides throughout the journey. Through it all the Freaks find themselves zapped!"

JULIUS, ROLF Lullaby For The Fishes LP
2020 restock. 2015 reissue of Rolf Julius's first and only LP, originally published by Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, in 1985. From Brooke Wentz's liner notes: "Rolf Julius (1939-2011) was the archetypal 'sound artist.' He painted with sound, he colored with pitch, and his work demands the attention and open-mindedness of those who embrace modern art. He collected found sounds, and mixed them with prerecorded single tone notes which were then, electronically modified and filtered through tiny loudspeakers, transformed into music. Depending on the surface texture where the loudspeaker has been placed -- wall, floor or outdoors -- these objects resonate and 'breathe' sound. His music is a mixture of all these sounds; a carefully calculated and conceived creation. He sculpted sound to define space, creating a musical environment where subtle changes occur."

FUKUI, RYO A Letter from Slowboat CD
We Release Jazz announce the official reissue of Ryo Fukui's final album, the very personal contemporary jazz offering, A Letter from Slowboat, sourced from the original masters. Known for his miraculous albums 1976's Scenery (WRJ 001CD/LP) and 1977's Mellow Dream (WRJ 002CD/LP), legendary Hokkaido pianist Ryo Fukui, with the help of his wife Yasuko, opened his very own jazz club in Sapporo in 1995, Slowboat. This is where Ryo Fukui spent the latter half of his career, playing again and again, welcoming peers for unforgettable sessions, and perfecting the craft he lived for: jazz. A Letter from Slowboat is a poetic, soulful, and honest love letter to Hokkaido, to Fukui's jazz club, and to endless hours of practicing artistry in a place called home. Backed by longtime collaborators Takumi Awaya on bass, and Ittetsu Takemura on drums, Ryo Fukui flows through classics and originals with natural class, fluidity, and absolute precision, expressing a smooth balance between skills and heart. Slowboat, full of breathtaking solos and exquisite moments of clarity, is another crucial piece in the career of one of the most fascinating jazzmen to ever grace the piano. It was released in 2016, sadly the year Ryo Fukui passed away, leaving behind a legacy of works that is sure to captivate jazz lovers for generations to come, and Slowboat, where the magic still happens to this day. Reissued in conjunction with 1999's Ryo Fukui in New York (WRJ 009CD/LTD-LP), also available via We Release Jazz. CD version comes in digipack.

FUKUI, RYO Ryo Fukui in New York CD
We Release Jazz announce the official reissue of Ryo Fukui's New York sessions with Lisle Atkinson and Leroy Williams, the aptly titled album Ryo Fukui in New York, sourced from the original masters. Recorded in February 1999 at Avatar Recording Studios in New York and inspired by Ryo Fukui's idol and mentor Barry Harris, the fourth album from the famed Sapporo pianist captures memorable sessions with seasoned American jazz musicians (and frequent Barry Harris collaborators) Lisle Arthur Atkinson on bass and Leroy Williams on drums. Ryo Fukui in New York is pure bop heaven, glowing with poetic takes on classics by Charlie Parker, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, and Bud Powell, plus a supreme remake of Fukui's very own Mellow Dream (WRJ 002CD/LP). It's expressive, soulful, and vibrating with a bouncing swing feel all the way through; every note falls exactly where it should, undeniable brilliance. Much like the other albums by the genius from Hokkaido, it's got that "special something", hard to grasp, hard to describe, but 100% felt. Skills and heart, the Ryo Fukui way. Following his New York adventures, Ryo Fukui headed back to Sapporo, and more precisely to his jazz club Slowboat, where his newly acquired experience inspired numerous jam sessions and a full dedication to perfecting his craft. He sadly passed away in 2016, leaving behind a legacy of works that is sure to captivate jazz lovers for generations to come, and Slowboat, where the magic still hap-pens to this day. Reissued in conjunction with 2016's A Letter from Slowboat (WRJ 008CD/LTD-LP), also available via We Release Jazz. CD version comes in digipack.

FLOODLIGHTS From A View CD
Edgy Antipodean indie-rock/jangle for fans of The Clean/Flying Nun/Rolling Blackouts/The Vaselines/Goon Sax/Go-Betweens. From A View is the debut album from Melbourne's Floodlights. From A View explores themes of identity, personal cross-roads and the misuse of power. The band's first exploration into proper studio recording with a well-regarded sound engineer. It was recorded over two days onto a 24-track tape machine at Head Gap studios in Preston in November. Floodlights are made up of members Louis Parsons, Ashlee Kehoe, Joe Draffen, and Archie Shannon. They present a distinctly Australian perspective, with a shambolic, catchy sound that melds '80s indie-rock rock with '90s New Zealand jangle-pop. Following a tour of Australia's East Coast in October 2019 the band began working on From A View. The songs were arranged and performed as a band, but often began from Louis or Ash presenting ideas to the group and building on them from there. The songs themselves were written over various points in the bands short career, yet come together very fittingly to show their distinct sound. Lead single "Thanks For Understanding" is about two lives going in different directions. It describes the complicated process of growing apart from someone, even though you still care for them. Nao Anzai (Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever) engineered the album and then mixed it over the infamous Australian summer. Mikey Young (Total Control/Eddie Current) recently added the final touch with mastering.

MKWAJU ENSEMBLE (MIDORI TAKADA) MKWAJU LP
2020 repress; LP version. 140 gram vinyl; 350 gram sleeve, with sticker. WRWTFWW Records announces the highly anticipated official reissue of holy grail album MKWAJU by acclaimed Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's MKWAJU Ensemble, sourced from the original masters and available in two versions: a vinyl LP cut at Emil Berliner Studios (formerly the in-house recording department of Deutsche Grammophon) and a digipack CD. Originally recorded in February and March 1981 and released by fabled Japanese avant-garde label Better Days (home of Ryuichi Sakamato's debut album, Yasuaki Shimizu's Kakashi (1982), Colored Music's self-titled LP (WRWTFWW 024CD/LP, 2018) and many more) MKWAJU is the fruit of the collaboration between Takada's crew and world-famous composer/musical director Joe Hisaishi, the man behind most of Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli anime soundtracks and over 100 other films scores, including Takeshi Kitano's Sonatine (1993), Hana-Bi (1997), and Kikujiro (1999). The ensemble's transcendental wonder is, in fact, the first-ever Midori Takada album and the first-ever Joe Hisaishi-produced album: historic. Led by Midori Takada on marimba, gong, vibraphone, and tom tom, MKWAJU is an inventive and riveting take on Eastern and Western minimalist traditions, African rhythms, and early electronica. Drawing from its jazz-rooted polyrhythmic improvisations in the most inventive ways, the album covers a wide spectrum of sounds, from colorful dance floor-ready percussion pieces that stand somewhere between proto-techno and experimental synth-pop, to cinematic ambient landscapes and ethereal drone delicacies. The feverishly sought-after full-length is a stepping-stone in Midori Takada's career and an all-around pioneering album. Alongside Takada and Hisaishi (who not only produced the album but also played synthesizers), personnel on MKWAJU includes famed Japanese musicians Yoji Sadanari and Hideki Matsutake of KI-Motion (WRWTFWW 026CD/LP, 2018) fame, Junko Arase (heard on Satoshi Ashikawa's legendary Still Way - Wave Notation 2(1982)), and Pecker (whose stacked resume boasts collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Jun Fukamachi).

ASHIKAWA, SATOSHI Still Way (Wave Notation 2) LP
2020 repress; LP version. 350gsm sleeve with selected UV high gloss varnish. Liner notes by Midori Takada, Satoshi Ashikawa, and Gareth Quinn Redmond. WRWTFWW Records announce the reissue of Satoshi Ashikawa's Still Way (Wave Notation 2). Initially released in 1982 as part of the Wave Notation series (which includes Hiroshi Yoshimura's Music For Nine Postcards), Still Way is, without a doubt, a seminal Japanese environmental/ambient/minimalism album, often mentioned alongside Midori Takada's Through The Looking Glass (1983) (WRWTFWW 018LP, WRWTFWW 019CD/LP) and Hiroshi Yoshimura's Green (1986) as one of the genre's most important pieces. "Like the moment of stillness, after the wind passes through the garden, when the rain stops for a brief second..." Notably inspired by Erik Satie's Furniture Music and Brian Eno's ambient work, Satoshi Ashikawa aimed to compose music "intended to be listened to in a casual manner, as a musical landscape or a sound object -- not something that would stimulate listeners but music that should drift like smoke and become part of the environment." The result is simply phenomenal, subtle minimalism and emotional elegance exquisitely orchestrated by Satoshi Ishikawa and his team consisting of his wife Masami Ashikawa (on flute), Midori Takada (on vibraphone), Yuko Utsumi (on harp), Tomoko Sono (on piano), and Junko Arase (on vibraphone). In conjunction with Still Way, WRWTFWW Records is releasing Laistigh den Ghleo (WRWTFWW 039CD/LP), a companion album by Irish ambient/minimalist composer Gareth Quinn Redmond, inspired by Ashikawa's approach. Liner notes by Midori Takada, Satoshi Ashikawa, and Gareth Quinn Redmond.

GRAUZONE Raum 12"
2020 restock. WRWTFWW Records is beyond thrilled to announce the first ever vinyl maxi-single release for Raum, Grauzone's best-kept secret and underground mega-gem from 1980. The four-track affair includes the full title track sourced from the original reels. The 12-inch vinyl is cut at 45rpm and comes with a never-seen cover art by band member Stephan Eicher and a handmade Xerox hype sticker. Initially released almost 40 years ago on the beloved compilation Swiss Wave The Album (Off Course Records, 1980) alongside the band's massive hit "Eisbär", "Raum" is the biggest Grauzone track people have yet to discover. An über-infectious New York style bassline played by Christian "GT" Trüssel and frantic drumming by Marco Repetto's blend with Martin Eicher's hauntingly hopeless lyrics and Claudine Chirac's saxophone escapades to personify post-punk heaven and all its wonderful anomalies. It's disco with an edge, pop filled with fear, it's The Cure infused with proto techno and Swiss art chic. Or maybe, it's simply one hell of a song that will make you dance and shout. Further on the A-side, Naum Gabo's rework takes Grauzone to modern dancefloors with a thumping track and bounce-inducing groove on which Liquid Liquid's very own Dennis Young adds magic in the form of marimba, Roto Toms, and EBowed guitar. The energy is electric, the sound is huge, a club banger with extra heart, ready for sound systems of all kinds. The B-side features Ata Macias's fabled extended version of "Raum" (first released in 2010 via Live at Robert Johnson) that Stephan Eicher described as "the perfect Grauzone edit" (and it is!), plus a straight to the point radio edit of Naum Gabo's rework. This release follows WRWTFWW's reissue of Grauzone's Eisbär maxi-single (WRWTFWW 041EP) as part of the 40 years anniversary of the band.
