ROLLING STONES, THE NME Poll Winners 1965 EP 7"
In 1965, The Rolling Stones picked up NME awards for "Best New Group", "Best British R'n'B Group" and "Best New Disc Or TV Singer". They celebrated with a gig at the Wembley Empire Pool where their live prowess could clearly be heard, despite the screams of 10,000 highly-energized fans. "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" was performed at a slower pace than usual and formed a medley with "Pain In My Heart". "Around And Around" featured a pair of densely interwoven guitars whilst "The Last Time" benefited from distinctive Keith Richards backing vocals.

LES RALLIZES DENUDES + BE There's No Heaven Like Hell 2LP
2020 restock. One of the strangest and most enigmatic groups in the history of rock n' roll, Les Rallizes Denudes, also known as Hadaka no Rallizes or Hadaka no Rarizu, were a Japanese experimental rock band that is often cited as a pioneering force of the noise rock movement. The story of the band is as strange and difficult as the music they made and although much of the tale is shrouded in mystery, everything apparently begins around Kyoto's radical anti-establishment communes of the late 1960s, where androgynous frontman Takashi Mizutani formed the group in November 1967 while attending Kyoto University. Hard facts are in thin supply and the band's name employs complex punning that essentially equates to "Fucked Up and Naked" in Japanese, a slang reference to being high on drugs. Inspired by the Velvet Underground and other groups employing prominent, overamplified guitar, the band's music was typically based on repetitive rhythmic patterns bolstered by Mizutani's heavily distorted lead guitar, though the poor sound quality of early demos apparently turned Mizutani away from studio recordings, rendering much of their output in the form of live bootlegs, supplanted by the occasional leaked studio demo. Early performances were given as accompaniment to avant-garde theater groups, though the group was soon deemed too loud to be a mere accompaniment, and membership fluctuated frequently, with Mizutani being the only constant, though he retreated from public view following the 1970 Red Army hijacking of Japan Airlines flight 351, with the assistance of original Rallizes bass player, Moriaki Wakabayashi, who subsequently fled to North Korea; the band continued to sporadically record and perform under various guises until 1997. The two versions of There's No Heaven Like Hell, presented here, was recorded on April 1, 1975 at Rallizes House in Fussa, a small town to the west of Tokyo, joining Mizutani with keyboardist/guitarist Taisuke Morishita's experimental group Be, originally known as Yellow. The first version takes the form of an epic slow drone, featuring Mizutani on acid guitar, backed only by Morishita's pulsating synthesizer lines; the second version is in full marathon mode, an hour-long dirge that sees the spacey duo joined by drummer Shunichiro Shoda and a plodding bassist in the latter portion.

BAD STREAM Sonic Healing CD
Sonic Healing is the third full-length release by Martin Steer's Bad Stream project. Conceived and recorded in March 2020, it reflects the tectonic shifts in society taking place at that time while also responding to personal tragedy: having suffered a stroke, his mother lost her language ability. Having been deprived of verbal and physical interaction with other humans, her son's music became her primary means of communication with him. For the album, Steer sent a single guitar loop to twelve musicians from the extended network of his ANTIME label who improvised with the recording, which was later collaged by Steer into a single, 39-minute long track that stylistically ranges from feverish jazz to brooding ambient and abstract electronica. Together with the Iranian artist Arash Akbari's vivid animations based on generative algorithms and real-time processing, Sonic Healing does not ask how one person can deal with turmoil in their life alone, but how we can create new forms of being together with art as a mediator.

KANGDING RAY 61 Mirrors . Music for SKALAR 2LP
This music was composed for SKALAR, an audio-visual kinetic art installation by light artist Christopher Bauder and Kangding Ray. SKALAR is a large-scale art installation that explores the complex impact of light and sound on human perception. Created by light artist Christopher Bauder and musician Kangding Ray, this monumental artwork is a reflection on the fundamental nature and essence of human emotions. By combining a vast array of kinetic mirrors and perfectly synchronized moving lights with a sophisticated multi-channel sound system, SKALAR offers an audio-visual narration of radiant light vector drawings and multi-dimensional sound in enormous pitch-dark spaces. SKALAR is an intense journey through the cycle of basic human emotions. Everchanging tonalities trigger the full spectrum of emotional experiences using light, sound, and motion. The feelings of awe, surprise, exhilaration, and anticipation of having one's senses overwhelmed are created, explored, and repeated in cycles throughout the piece, providing a collective, yet highly individual emotional experience. Light and darkness as endless cycles of day and night define our perception of time and influence our emotions. SKALAR is a central piece within light artist Christopher Bauder's body of work, reflecting his deep fascination with light. In this gigantic installation, light is treated as a solid material that can be dimensionally sculpted and shaped, evoking abstract emotional associations. Intertwined with the tireless exploration of textures, rhythm, and sound design by musician and composer Kangding Ray, the silence of darkness is filled with iridescent forms of spatial light and sound. The original composition is spatialized in 360° over a 12 channels sound system, this stereo version has been mixed and mastered to convey a similar sense of space. As of the release of this record, SKALAR has been presented in Berlin (Kraftwerk) in 2018, in Mexico City (Frontón) in 2019 & in Amsterdam (Gashouder) in 2020. Gatefold sleeve with silver embossed.

CHI FACTORY, THE The Bamboo Recordings LP
2016 release. Jacobus Derwort started exploring sonic soundscapes listening to his short-wave world receiver at the age of 12. There he would hear music from Africa, China, Japan, Indonesia, South America, and beyond. He started playing guitar, piano, percussion, and saxophone. He met Hanyo van Oosterom in 1978 and they started the legendary cult rock band, The Jones. Derwort was playing the sax, van Oosterom the drums. They started conducting sound experiments in Hanyo's small cellar in the Dutch village of Krimpen aan den IJssel. In the early '80s they made their first cassette, The Kallikatsou. Hanyo started the ambient collective CHI in 1983. Jacobus was the first musician to join CHI. Together, they went to the magic rock "The Kallikatsou" on the island of Patmos, Greece. Here, Hanyo had stayed for months in a cave for some deep soul-searching. He heard the sound of CHI in the silence of the night like a message from out of space. Being together at the Kallikatsou they shaped the foundation of CHI, making handmade flutes from local bamboo and conducting field recordings of water, crickets, owls, goats, wind, etc... Back home they asked Willem Cramer to join CHI, and later Michel Banabila. They released a legendary ambient cassette, The Original Recordings, in 1983 which soon became a collector's item. CHI stopped in 1987. Willem Cramer and Michel Banabila started the world music collective East Meets West in 1989. Hanyo and Jacobus kept recording ambient soundscapes. Jacobus was working on his Bamboo recordings. Hanyo recorded the first tracks for The Kallikatsou Experience. Neither album was ever released. They returned a few times together to The Kallikatsou, but there the history seems to end... until decades later when Astral Industries located them after a long search, inspired by Rod Modell (Deepchord). The result was the vinyl release of The Original Recordings in February 2016. This inspired Hanyo and Jacobus to work on an old plan: remixing the old bamboo recordings. Most tracks were made in the eighties before and after CHI. Original tape recordings using mainly analog sounds, percussion, samples and (of course) bamboo flutes and manipulated clarinets. Hanyo added some new recordings and remixed the old tapes in his Numoonlab Studio in Rotterdam. The result was The Bamboo Recordings, a timeless collection of ambient soundscapes. The Chi Factory is the next step of CHI into the future. It will involve many future ambient collaborations.

CHI FACTORY, THE The Mantra Recordings 2LP
2019 release. Dedicated to the life and work of Robert Lax (1915-2000), the American poet who lived on Patmos, Greece, as a self-exiled hermit since the '60s. Jack Kerouac called Lax "one of the great original voices of our times, a Pilgrim in search of beautiful innocence." The Chi Factory would like to give special thanks to his good Patmian friends Ulf Knaus and Nikos Eliou, who showed them his house on Patmos (everything is still the same since he left) and also his favorite old wooden door (see leaflet). His great minimalistic poetry became a source of inspiration for The Mantra Recordings. His life on Patmos was far away from public attention -- quiet and always surrounded by the skies, seas, cats and birds. Lax was a real dreamcatcher. The Chi Factory is the next step of CHI, formed by Hanyo van Oosterom and Jacobus Derwort.

LF58 Alterazione 2LP
Alterazione presents a critical statement -- distinguished by its technical execution and breathtaking artistry. The album itself is a cathedral of sound, each cavernous chamber an exploration of space and consciousness. Presented in four movements (one track per side), altogether they extend as a transportive experience of evolution for the listener. "Iniziazione" -- a steady departure that unfurls like the opening of a portal; a process of molecular transfiguration commences. Panoramic landscapes begin to stretch wide, glistening with an exotic beauty, before the shamanic incantations of "Rituale" draws things deeper. Pulsating rotations push through the next phase of transformation, now drenched in hyperspace white-noise. The procedure continues through the quiet ethereal orbit of "Metamorfosi", before finishing with the three-part "Evocazione/Contatto/Risveglio"; uplifting synth motifs drive forward with optimism, before fading back into the great expanse. Alterazione is both cerebral and meditative, and one cannot help but be pulled at the core by its potency.

Señor No is the ultimate Basque rock band. No bullshit. Be ready for a fucking bulldozer running over you at 100 miles per hour! It's no secret that Señor No is one of Bang! Records' favorite bands ever. And the list of reasons for it is endless... But now they have gone further than ever before! All of it directed by Xabi Garre, master and commander of Señor No since 1994. DRONES, THE Here Come The Lies 2LP
Bang! Records reissue The Drones' Here Come The Lies, originally released in 2002. At last! The Drones' first album on vinyl available outside of Australia. In order to exceed the sound pollution of Melbourne's -- the hometown of the band -- big city noise back in the day (2003), The Drones overdrive their amps to a brutal level, strum their strings the hard way and beat the drums in an unheard-of way. This is blues from the gutter. Big city blues, although some call it noise. Sure, there's enough overdriven chords on this album to please any noise fan, but there's more. The sound sways between a chorus of dissonance and numerous tactical silences, only to emphasize the music even more. You can't have noise if you don't have silence (makes sense doesn't it?) Also, the band writes lyrics that fully correspond to the music, making the package truly whole. Helping the band doing this is the anti-production-a-go-go; thank you for the squeals and the good feedback. Rock and blues, that's what The Drones are all about. Doing it the hard way. 150 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve; edition of 500.

JUNIE Suzie Super Groupie LP
Be With Records present a reissue of Junie's Suzie Super Groupie, originally released in 1976. Walter "Junie" Morrison released his third solo LP, Suzie Super Groupie, in 1976. A slick, smooth and soulful record, it's a genre-melting tour de force with rich elements of proto-boogie, funk, and jazz. The sublime "Suzie Thundertussy" was brilliantly sampled by Madlib for Kanye West's "No More Parties In LA". The track opens with a sinuous synth and combines Junie's storytelling abilities with an emphatic vocal style and funky arrangements. The powerful bass and sinister chords create an undeniable groove, and the explosive chorus is full of ambition and joy. "If You Love Him" is a great, mid-tempo soul song. With a swinging jazz-infused middle-eight, it demonstrates Junie was much more than a mercurial funkateer. The laconic groove of "What Am I Gonna Do" recalls Fresh-era Sly Stone, whilst the frantic "Super Groupie" showcases his sharp imagination and sense of fun. The lyrics range from humorous to dirty, all fueled by an infectious groove and tight horn arrangements. The P-Funk of B-side opener "Surrender" bounces and sparkles, with a strutting Junie backed by great harmony vocals and joyous horns. "Suzie" is a sleek, softer affair albeit with a disco pulse; a beautiful combination of bright, funky horns, fluid basslines and vigorous rhythms. "Stone Face Joe" is another character song, this time one that chugs along on a sweet boogie rhythm. The closing piece, "Spirit", is an extended funk-rock jam. A nod to Jimi Hendrix, it creates a live concert sound, complete with screaming crowd and fuzzy vocals. Junie made his name as the lead singer and keyboardist of the Ohio Players. As the mastermind behind "Pain", "Pleasure", "Ecstasy", and the oft-sampled "Funky Worm", he was beloved by countless musicians, not least Prince. As co-writer of some of Funkadelic's seminal works -- "One Nation Under A Groove", "(Not Just) Knee Deep" -- his standing as one of the structural fathers of funk is undisputed. In late 2016, Solange's A Seat At The Table featured a track called "Junie", a tribute to the freedom he created in music. In February 2017, Junie died, aged just 62. With records as mighty as Suzie Super Groupie, his legacy will live forever.

BAILEY, JR Just Me 'N' You LP
Be With Records present a reissue of JR Bailey's Just Me 'N' You, originally released in 1974. A dramatic, string-drenched epic, James Ralph Bailey's Just Me 'N' You has been a sought-after soul masterpiece for decades. A lush suite of beautiful songs, it was conceived as a concept album; a sophisticated paean to love. Originally released by MAM Records in 1974, Just Me 'N' You is a breathtaking jazzy soul album. It's similar in style to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On (1971) -- particularly the performances, orchestrations, and chord progressions -- but dealing with a different universal subject matter. If What's Going On was about romance instead of politics, it would sound like this. Fans of Marvin, Leon Ware, Donny Hathaway, Leroy Hutson, and Willie Hutch will love this record. An underrated gem -- it's got to be one of the best soul albums of all time. The original productions were made on a basic home tape machine and enhanced with strings, rhythmic overdubs, and a variety of other instrumentation. These are beautiful arrangements of strings and jazzy horns. Rhythm guitars and bouncy bass serve as the groove foundation, congas provide a Latin feel whilst the vibraphone and harmonica add color. And then of course there's JR's voice. His style recalls Hathaway, with a delivery akin to Marvin at the time. As he scats and sings, accompanying himself in sweet harmonies, there is still a rawness of pain and longing in his voice, the rawness familiar to all deep soul. Just Me 'N' You is no mere collection of songs. The tender, smooth tunes flow perfectly together into a fluid, single artistic statement. This is one where it's hard to pick out any standouts. You may have heard the soaring title track before, maybe on Gilles Peterson's Digs America compilation. The opening track "After Hours" sounds as fresh now as it ever was and segues beautifully into the majestic "Heaven On Earth". Recorded by Hathaway the previous year, Bailey's original of "Love Love Love" is incredible and arguably the definitive version. The powerful, dreamy, sax-and-harmony-laced "All Strung Out Over You" has echoes of the Chi-Lites, it's that good. Mastered by Simon Francis, cut by Pete Norman.

SEMENYA, CAIPHUS Listen To The Wind LP
Be With Records reissue Caiphus Semenya's Listen To The Wind, originally released in 1982. Caiphus Semenya, AKA Mr Letta Mbulu, is a South African legend, and Listen To The Wind, his iconic debut album, is simply a superb modern-soul/boogie album. Now a revered composer, musician, and arranger, Caiphus left apartheid South Africa in the '60s for self-imposed exile in Southern California together with his wife, Letta Mbulu. Settling in Los Angeles he started working with the likes of Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba and other exiled and semi-exiled South African artists, as well as, of course, his wife Letta. Caiphus also found himself working with and composing for a broad range of jazz and pop artists, including Lou Rawls, Nina Simone, and Cannonball Adderley. His facility with both jazz and African forms served him well. His LA stay was also the beginning of an ongoing collaboration with Quincy Jones, the fruits of which can be tasted in Caiphus's African compositions for the scores to Roots (1977) and Spielberg's adaptation of The Color Purple (1985). Listen To The Wind is a deeply impressive synthesis of early '80s US production and instrumentation together with his traditional South African musical roots. There are elements of boogie, soul, funk, and jazz, all shot through with pan-African flavor, and moving effortlessly from up-tempo floor fillers to more meditative, slower soulful tracks. Produced by Caiphus himself, he makes full use of a stellar line-up of session musicians including Nathan East, Michael Stanton, Sonny Burke, and Paulinho DaCosta. And of course, there are Letta's show-stopping vocals. Opener "Angelina" is a breezy, feel-good SA boogie-funk classic, harmonic and horn heavy. It's followed by the gentle reggae lilt of "Play With Fire". A real melodic slo-mo delight, carried by the tropical vibes and, above all else, by the extraordinary performance of Caiphus himself and his backing singers. Closing out side one, the spectacular "Umoya" is driven by triumphant horns and slick bass, with proto-Graceland vibes. Caiphus trades verses with the unmistakable tones of Letta, and it sounds divine. Elegantly firing up side two is perhaps the album's best-known track. "Without You" is a heavenly slice of modern soul, smooth strutting, disco-fied funk with that unmistakably South African sound. "Ziph'inkomo" is a soul-soothing, swooning epic. The irresistible groove of frantic, percussive workout "Gumba Boogie" closes out what must surely be one of the greatest artistic statements of the 1980s. Mastered by Simon Francis. Faithfully restored cover art.

SEMENYA, CAIPHUS Streams Today... Rivers Tomorrow LP
Be With Records reissue Caiphus Semenya's Streams Today... Rivers Tomorrow, originally released in 1984. Caiphus Semenya, AKA Mr Letta Mbulu, is a South African legend, and Listen To The Wind, his second solo album, is perfect. His LA stay was also the beginning of an ongoing collaboration with Quincy Jones, the fruits of which can be tasted in Caiphus's African compositions for the scores to Roots (1977) and Spielberg's adaptation of The Color Purple (1985). Streams Today... Rivers Tomorrow is not just a musical masterpiece, it is also the soundtrack to the life of many South Africans. It fuses US-heavy sounds of boogie, disco, and funk with Afrobeat and traditional African elements. Jabu Nkosi handles keyboards on the album, with synths by Caiphus and Craig Harris. Sipho Gumede is on bass and Condry Ziqubu is on guitars. The Afro-Cuban grooves of "Mamase" continues where Listen To The Wind (BEWITH 084LP) left off, another horn-heavy call-and-response ode to a positive life. It's followed by "Aida," with gleeful, dayglow keys and synths on the right side of mid-80s sleaze are accompanied by a killer bassline, slick, skipping drums, and proud horns. The tempo is taken down a few notches for the powerful "Nomalanga" and the lamentations of a heartbroken man who must leave his wife Nomalanga and their children to join the fight against apartheid. Breezy drums and contemplative keys act as a backdrop for the stunning backing vocal harmonies in the intro of "Moshanyana". "Dial Your Number" is an up-tempo English-language boogie-funk workout, complete with mid-song cutaway to a random telephone call. The brilliant "Matswale" was a hit in South Africa in the mid-80s -- it is some damn fine breezy, beautiful, emotional pop. The ferocious "Ndi-Kulindile," with hard-edged, electro-influenced drum patterns and a bouncing, elastic bassline is something of a departure from the album's sound. Mastered by Simon Francis.

YAMAMOTO, TATSUHISA Ashioto LP
Black Truffle announce Ashioto, the first international solo release from Japanese drummer-percussionist-composer Tatsuhisa Yamamoto. Active for over a decade, Yamamoto has performed and recorded extensively with artists such as Jim O'Rourke, Eiko Ishibashi, and Akira Sakata, as well as participating in innumerable improvised and ad hoc groups. Ashioto presents two wide-ranging pieces that combine Yamamoto's percussion work with piano, field recordings, electronics, and contributions from guest musicians Daisuke Fujiwara and Eiko Ishibashi. Beginning with a passage of chiming metal percussion, the first side slowly builds into a rolling, open groove reminiscent of Yamamoto's work on Eiko Ishibashi's acclaimed Drag City LP, The Dreams My Bones Dream (2018). Spacious piano and synth notes, along with Ishibashi's spare melodic figures on processed flute, hover above this propulsive rhythmic foundation, the whole effect adding up to a more abstract take on the area explored on Rainer Brüninghaus's ECM classic Freigeweht (1981). The LP's second side opens up a cavernous space filled with ominous electronics and shimmering metallic percussion, which organically transitions into a passage of rumbling piano chords and mysterious concrète sound. Later in the piece, Daisuke Fujiawara's saxophone enters, playing melancholic melodic fragments that are looped and layered, creating a seasick swaying effect familiar to listeners of James Tenney's works with tape delay systems. Beginning as delicate bass drum pulses, Yamamoto's accompanying percussion eventually builds the piece into a raging torrent of free-improv splatter, processed sax and fizzing electronics. Though grounded in instrumental performance, Ashioto is very much a studio construction, making inventive use of electro-acoustic principles in its editing and mixing. Together with its sister Ashiato -- a different take on the same "script" released simultaneously on Japanese label Newhere -- Ashioto demonstrates to an international audience for the first time the true breadth and ambition of Yamamoto's work. JAEGER, KASSEL Meith LP
Black Truffle present Meith, a new composition in two parts from prolific composer/theorist François Bonnet. Usually operating under his Kassel Jaeger moniker, Bonnet is a major figure in contemporary electronics and electro-acoustic music, collaborating with artists such as Lucy Railton, Jim O'Rourke, and Stephen O'Malley, and releasing his work on labels including Editions Mego, Senufo, and Shelter Press. Always meticulously detailed yet immediately affecting, Bonnet's work situates itself at a very personal intersection between the traditions of academic electronic and electroacoustic music, and a more shadowy, underground group of approaches to experimental sound: kosmische musik, the tape murk of the 1980s underground, the haunted ambience of Christoph Heemann & Co. Meith immediately welcomes you into its densely layered sound world of electronic tones, positive organ, and unidentifiable field-recorded textures. Almost static yet constantly in flux, it deliberately opens itself up to repeated and varied listening: from a distance, its many voices cohere into a monolithic plane of sound, while closer inspection reveals myriad details and momentary events. Like a drop of ink spreading through water, harmonic material present in one voice gradually fans out into the whole arrangement, creating fleeting moments of unity amid the constantly shifting waves of tone and texture. Far from the austerity of some contemporary electro-acoustic music, Meith affects the listener as overwhelming organic; its individual layers are unstable and at times near-chaotic, imbued with life. Though it can appear almost formless, the piece undergoes major shifts throughout its duration, from the austere dissonance of the opening moments to the surging harmonies that appear midway through the second side before the piece gradually dissolves into a spectral glimmer.

HAMANN, JUDITH Music for Cello and Humming CD
Nomadic Australian cellist and composer Judith Hamann presents two collections of her sonic inquiries into shaking and humming. Her CD, Music for Cello and Humming, features two pieces for cello and humming written specifically for Hamann by composers Sarah Hennies and Anthony Pateras alongside Hamann's own "Humming Suite" and "Study for Cello and Humming." Having arisen intuitively from Hamann's investigations into shaking, just intonation, psychoacoustic phenomena, and the voice in relation to the femme presenting body in performance, humming here also references dislocation, or ventriloquism. Although teetering on the edge of audibility, the intimate and vulnerable closed-mouth sounding enters into subtle interference with her cello, drifting into acoustical beating and bringing instability to otherwise more formal grid structures. The capacity for rupture of this volatile fragility reaches its apotheosis on Hennies' "Loss," a piece that deliberately instructs Hamann to hum beyond the limits of her voice range. Going against the grain of chamber music orthodoxy, the guaranteed failure set in motion by this instruction yields a generative sound of effort reminiscent of Xenakis's storied desire for an instrumentalist to play with the sorrow of knowing they can't do everything. With an arc suggestive of sudden life change, "Loss" casts queer epistemology onto composition, positioning failure, undoing, unbecoming, and transforming as alternative ways of knowing or being. Hennies's signature composite merging of individual components here brings oral sounds that include breathing and coughing together with humming, cello, and sine waves. Like Glenn Gould's 1982 Goldberg Variations or Pauline Oliveros's Accordion and Voice, this timbral meeting of bodily utterances with consummate musicianship imbues Hamann's humming work with a breakable, human strand, here as humbling as it is uncomfortable. Music for Cello and Humming is accompanied by an essay on both recordings by Nora Fulton. It's presented alongside the LP set, Shaking Studies (BF 017LP). Judith Hamann undertook her doctoral studies with renowned cellist Charles Curtis, with whom she is currently engaged in a discourse-based project, "Materialities of Realisation." She has additionally demonstrated a superlative capacity for improvisation and engagement with sonic arts through work with artists Dennis Cooper, Éliane Radigue, Áine O'Dwyer, Ilan Volkov, Toshimaru Nakamura, La Monte Young, and Marian Zazeela, Golden Fur, Jessika Kenney, Anna Homler, Yvette Janine Jackson, and Lori Goldston, among others. Her recorded appearances include Tashi Wada's Duets, Graham Lambkin's Community, Alvin Lucier's Illuminated By The Moon, and Gossamers, with Rosalind Hall. Edition of 500.

MODERAT Moderat LP
2020 repress. Gatefold LP version. This is the highly-anticipated debut full-length release by Moderat, the collaborative conjoining of Modeselektor and Apparat. A twist of fate at the Stadtbad Mitte (Berlin-Mitte City Pool) united them in the spring of 2008, and Moderat was reformed. Recorded at the legendary Berlin Hansa Studios (where David Bowie recorded Heroes) in analog with the help of the studio's vintage tube technology and an old EMI console from 1972, restored especially for Moderat. Moderat's self-titled debut makes it sound like these fellas have been working closely together for years -- and the analog production gives these tracks a steady, glowing warmth that pulses and breathes organically. Totally seductive, dark dance tunes that possess an almost tribal disposition for the most intense peak moments. This is a massive debut that unites two of techno's most celebrated acts.

ALLIEN, ELLEN Auraa CD
Ellen Allien emits a powerful Auraa on a new longplayer. Ellen Allien -- one of Berlin's most ardent techno ambassadors -- proudly unveils her latest full-length expedition into the realms of underground electronica. Brimming with creative energy, Ellen's new album Auraa follows her 2019 release Alientronic (BPX 001CD/LP), and is her third album in three years. Raw, emotive, and capable of transporting you from reality to an electro-fied fantasy, Aurra explores the notion of unseen energies controlling our planet. Beginning with the faintest hint of trance euphoria on the downtempo "Hello Planet Earth (Breath Mix)", the album soon moves into more bumpin' territory with "In Music I Trust" -- Ellen's signature use of vocals-as-melody entrancing the listener. "Walking In The Dark" takes things up a notch further with jabbing percussion and mesmerizing atmospherics, followed by "Confusion", a masterclass in heady hypnotic composition. "Human" is a deeply affecting beatless segue with its drone-esque soundscape. "True Romantics" taps into your emotional center utilizing hard beats and wistful synth lines. Lastly, "Traum" ("Dream" in English) takes you out of your body and into the infinite realm of vibration, as waves of beautifully composed pads and bubbling analog bass encourages you to transcend into the next astral plane.

SCHICKERT, GUNTER Uberfallig LP
2020 repress. 180 gram LP version. Bureau B reissues Günter Schickert's album Überfällig, originally released in 1979 on Sky Records. "No sooner had electronic music broken through in Germany, principally aligned in the two schools of Düsseldorf and Berlin, than Günter Schickert also began his first musical experiments. Although GAM, the group he founded in 1973, did not then release a record, he did issue his first solo effort, Samtvogel, a year later -- an album which was eagerly snapped up and re-released by the Brain label. It would take five years for Sky Records to release his next LP, entitled Überfällig (trans. "Overdue"), which proved to be the last for a number of years. This album, as its German title suggests, was long overdue. Günter Schickert had developed his own unique, forward-looking type of music, assuming an exceptional position in the concert of German electronics. In spite of the clearly discernible influence of music from the so-called Berlin school (Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel etc.), Schickert is anything but a copycat. Schickert concentrated on pursuing his own ideas and pushing the boundaries of his remarkable aural creations. He is at pains to emphasize that, unlike almost all of his contemporaries, he did not use any synthesizers; his instruments are the electric guitar, his own studio with a multi-track tape machine and a comfortable arsenal of effects. Similar experiments had also been attempted by Manuel Göttsching (Inventions For Electric Guitar) and Achim Reichel (A.R. & Machines: Die Grüne Reise), but without stretching the multifaceted nature of their music to the point of microtonality, as Schickert dared to do on Überfällig. His own take on minimalism places him closer to the likes of Steve Reich and Glen Branca, free from the reach of Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream. Schickert's use of concrete sounds and his completely autonomous way of working in his own studio presaged a stage of development more readily associated with the early 1980s. In 1979, the album was a statement of a virtuosic outsider, a guitarist and sound sculptor whose musical visions transgressed the level of expectation of a potential audience, detached from the electronic mainstream. Günter Schickert was one of the protagonists who furthered the development of experimental pop music from the outer margins. The reissue of Überfällig was, in a word, overdue." --Asmus Tietchens; Liner notes by Asmus Tietchens.

MOUCHOIR ETANCHE Une Fille Petrifiee LP
"I am sitting in a garden, I haven't left the property in weeks, someone is dropping off food once a week. I haven't seen a human being in ages, I feel like a reverse Schroedinger cat -- do I exist when nobody sees me? I must be somewhere in France but I don't remember. I have lost my consciousness again. When I wake up I hear a broken record looping somewhere in the mansion. A washed-out opera. Behind the trees I see the dilapidated hermaphrodite sculpture in a field of verdant nettles and fern. I hear gunshots far afield, aeroplanes in the sky, sirens on the main road. When unconscious I dreamt of sitting on the Concorde observing the scarab blue ocean and iridescent clouds from above, an erstwhile receding memory. Sometimes I hear the organ of the nearby Renaissance Cathedral merging with the Russian Church bells. I am hallucinating again. Someone's humming in the kitchen? Singing? A radio? I overhear two young women talking about art galleries in the neighbour's garden. Bees attack, again? Again and again. The hairspray finally intoxicates them. An amphoric Japanese voice is whispering in my head saying I will die soon. Someone (something?) bangs on the vases. The fountain's water turns dark red. Fleur calls and says mum died. The funeral will be televised on Tuesday. We opt for the synthetic choir for the service. The call is suddenly interrupted. Mold is slowly taking over the house. I go back inside."Une Fille Pétrifiée is the debut album of new Black To Comm related entity Mouchoir Ètanche. Combining real and fake acoustic instrumentation, sampling, field recordings, and excessive yet inaudible post production this is another sublime and ethereal statement. Influences are ranging from (French) classical and opera to the anecdotical compositions of Luc Ferrari, Chinese opera, chanson, sacred music/church music, JG Ballard, and surrealism. KAMM Cookie Policies LP
Following their debut album Kick Drunk Love (2016) for Marcel Vogel's Intimate Friends imprint, Circus Company present the next installment in the sporadic KAMM legacy: Cookie Policies. Far more sonically rich and musically adventurous than its predecessor, Cookie Policies sees the band make bold strides into new territories where classically hardwired categories such as jazz, indie rock, and electronica melt into one another with immaculate, timeless ease. The band members' positions are more clear cut as well this round, with Marc David Barrite (aka Dave Aju) on prominent lead vocals in many of the pieces, Alland Byallo on trumpet, Kenneth Scott on synth bass, and Marc Smith adding guitar sections while the others shared the arranging and programming duties. This makes for a deeper continuation of the otherworldly combination of their known individual production styles, as well as a musical whole truly greater than the sum of its parts. The set starts off with "Bird Call", whose opening ode to Morricone ok corral-meets-samurai showdown riffs flow into a loose and drifting psychedelic boom bap blip, building until a glorious change-up of key and energy brings the track to its peak and deconstructed back down. "Rachel, the Largest Bullfrog" then takes things in a sweeter, slightly more traditionally-structured direction where dusty indie-folk ballad vibes intersect with an array of twisted cosmic tones, bits of computer keyboard percussion, and deep rolling sub bass. "Buckle Down" then moves things back away from acoustic restraints into a beautiful synth-laden musing on potential regret, with an ultra-potent horn section from Byallo vs a nasty stacked Roland SH-101 finish. "CCBPGC" cools things off for a few minutes with an ambient field recording slice-and-dice motif, which slowly but surely evolves into a slinking jazz noir groove from another dimension. The more traditional song structures return on the lovely "La Luna", where Barrite's pen and soulful voice take to nautical longing themes over apropos waves of sonic textures. The ebb and flow of the verse/chorus sections eventually rise and give way to an absolutely gorgeous denouement. "Shleem" then takes us into pure unadulterated soaring sci-fi soundtrack ambient blast-off bliss, while the epic closing track "The Soft Glow of Electric Sex" gives a hearty nod to early masters of sprawling psychedelic jam sessions, from Pink Floyd and Can to In A Silent Way-era Miles and Liquid Liquid, while bringing it clearly into futurist millennia.

MUKDAD ROTHENBERG LANKOW In the Wake of Memories CD
Mukdad Rothenberg Lankow translates years of experience into music that unfolds in a sense of hope. Says Volker Lankow, "It comes from everywhere and nowhere." First meeting at David Rothenberg's "Nightingales in Berlin" project, the three musicians recorded this improvised fusion of experiences with oud, clarinet and percussion. A meditation on survival and resilience, on empathy and love. Each musician, a master of his instrument, seamlessly interweaves phrases and nuance each expressing pain and joy, expectation and relief. Wassim Mukdad is a refugee from Syria who escaped torture first to Istanbul now in Berlin. Volker Lankow worked with Medecins sans Frontiere in crisis torn zones and now with mentally ill criminals. Rothenberg, an author and philosopher, brings an exploration of the idea of sound to this trio. This is an album of music from an entire region of the world, crossing cultural barriers and tribal sides. An accomplished percussionist Volker Lankow performs on frame drums and tabla among other instruments. Wassim and Volker share years of rough experiences in conflict regions and in their playing together one hears a path toward clarity and beauty out of terrible shadows. "It is a delight to play with Volker, a percussionist who does not need to show off, who has nothing to prove." Wassim Mukdad met Volker Lankow as part of David Rothenberg's "Nightingales in Berlin" project which documented a group of musicians' attempts to play live with the birds in the dark parks of Germany's capital city. Clarinetist and author, Rothenberg was inspired by the rapport these two offered to each other and got the trio into Berlin's Studio Wong for one perfect day when all this music was improvised. Mukdad Rothenberg Lankow translate years of experience into music that unfolds with a worldwide sense of hope.

TRICCA, EMMA St Peter (Gold Vinyl) LP
One of the most remarkable folk-rock albums of the past decade arrives in on gold vinyl. Fresh from touring in the UK and Europe with acts including Robyn Hitchcock and Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets, London-based singer-songwriter Emma Tricca releases a new edition of her stunning 2018 album St Peter, accompanied by a limited edition postcard. Praised on first release as a "wonderfully romantic piece of folk-pop" (The Times), possessing "a startling and sublime new sound" (The Quietus), St Peter features guest appearances from folk legend Judy Collins alongside indie icons Howe Gelb, Jason Victor, and Steve Shelley. The album is one so loaded with texture that is almost feels tangible, a rare record that feels precise and pristine in its executions but never sterile or lifeless. Electric guitars fizz away like a controlled electricity, Tricca's guitar playing flows gracefully at the core with her vocals existing in the perfect state between slight rasp and caramel-smoothness. Shelley's drumming and percussion gives a steady heartbeat to the record which is further brought to life by a variety of deft instrumentation, including piano, bass, cello, violin, glockenspiel, and of course the variety of guest backing vocalists. Whilst St Peter's deep-seated roots can perhaps be traced to traditional folk music, its finished existence feels far from such a thing -- its ever-flowing essence skipping through genres, tones, paces and rhythms with a gliding grace. Perhaps even a touch of the spirit of Hoboken's own Yo La Tengo has seeped into the finish record in its quiet yet stirring beauty.

Jelinek might as well have sampled a horn player's hissing intake of breath - it would have been 'jazz' enough for his purposes." --The Wire"It's a perfect inversion of conventional music, a sonic negative. BRETSCHNEIDER, FRANK abtasten_halten LP
Faitiche presents a new album by Frank Bretschneider. abtasten_halten was made as part of the raster.labor installation first presented at CTM Festival in 2019. It is perhaps the most radical work in Bretschneider's distinctive oeuvre: abtasten_halten is a self-generating composition for synthesizer modules whose sole sound source is the movement of two VU meter needles. The resulting percussive sounds coalesce into rhythmic combinations -- all random, without repetition. The album resembles a meditation on infinite rhythmic variation. Includes download code.Frank Bretschneider on abtasten_halten: "abtasten_halten (sample_hold) is a largely self-generating composition for a modular synthesizer system. Self-generating here means that as soon as a current flows, the various modules interact, but within limits set by the composer via the connections between the modules (patches): timing, tempo, timbres, dynamics. These conditions are kept variable to a certain extent or left to chance, so that the composition created is always similar but never the same. On the one hand, the use of random generators opens up possibilities that would not otherwise have been considered. On the other, it offers the fascination of the unfinished and the unique: totally unexpected musical events that you might hear only once. abtasten_halten combines my preferences for percussive music in general and electronic music in particular. Largely avoiding repetitive structures, the piece is more like a free improvisation, quiet and diffuse, but also extremely dense, in ever-changing contrasts and transformations. The tone generators are two modified VU meters whose needles, driven by trigger impulses, create a simple one-bar pattern by hitting against a metal spring that is connected to a piezo element. The tempo is continuously varied over a period of about ten minutes by several mutually modulating LFOs, ranging from about 0.06 Hz up to the lower audio range of about 18Hz. The percussive sounds thus obtained are then passed through low-pass filters with moderate resonance and random frequency modulation to additionally color the sound. Further processing is then executed by an echo module whose tempo and repetitions are again determined by random parameters. Finally, the audio signal is occasionally enriched with reverb to add more spaciousness to the sound."

Known best in the past for his work with figures like Peter Maxwell Davies, Arthur Russell, and Meredith Monk, today his own formidable compositions continue to draw increasing admiration. Joyous, insistent, and immersive, Femenine bathes the listener in surges of tonal color from intertwining winds, piano, violin, pitched percussion, synthesizer, and -- uniquely -- the composer's own invention of mechanized sleigh bells, which provide the 72-minute piece with its characteristic pulse. NAS God's Son 2LP
Restocked. RSD 2020 release. "Pressed on blue & white swirl vinyl! Housed in a high gloss jacket with each lp tucked into a printed inner sleeve. Nasir 'Nas' Jones' 2001 record Stillmatic was considered a major comeback for the 90s rap icon. It signaled a return to the gritty, urban chaos of his acclaimed debut album, after releasing record after record of gradually more mainstream material, and Nas' return to prominence in the highest echelons of hip-hop. In spite of this newfound critical clout, Stillmatic's release did nothing to squash his then ongoing feud with fellow New Yorker Jay-Z, who had gone so far as to challenge Nas to a pay-per-view rap battle. A challenge Nas rejected, stating 'If Jay-Z wants to battle, he should drop his album the same day I do and let the people decide.' Nas fans never would get the no-holds barred lyrical battle with Jay-Z many had speculated. What they got instead was one of Nas' most personal and introspective releases to date in 2002. Not long after Stillmatic's release, Nas spent much of his time away from the limelight to tend to his ill mother, who would pass on from breast cancer in 2002. His experiences with his mother's mortality as well as the fallout of his feud with Jay-Z, who continued to produce diss tracks as Nas tended to his mother, would inspire much of the lyrical material on his next record. God's Son was released in December of 2002, and like Stillmatic before it, was subject to major critical acclaim. On God's Son, Nas effectively took the battle-hardened demeanor he had cultivated and tore it down across 14 tracks that were emotionally insular, though still dusted in urban grit, and still finding time to shoot back at Jay-Z's potshots on tracks like 'Last Real Nigga Alive' and 'Mastermind.' Assisting Nas was a slew of top-tier producers like The Alchemist, Eminem, Ron Browz, and Salaam Remi, over samples of James Brown, the Incredible Bongo Band, Fela Kuti, and Beethoven, and guest vocals from Alicia Keys, Kelis, Claudette Ortiz of City High, and even a posthumous 2Pac. God's Son has been out of print on vinyl since its initial 2002 release, but Get On Down is excited to bring you this deluxe LP package for Record Store Day 2020, remastered from its original audio and pressed on exclusive colored vinyl!"

A-SUN AMISSA Black Rain (I) CD
Black Rain (I) takes the form of three extended pieces of new music from A-Sun Amissa, written and recorded by Richard Knox during the early months of 2020. Focusing on a more ambient and cinematic approach, Black Rain offers another texture to the A-Sun Amissa palette. Lulling, melancholic atmospheres are the order of the day here as intricate layers of sound weave in and out of each other, forming a bleak and sentimental tone. Never one to repeat himself, Knox has taken the more ambient elements of previous releases and developed them into a more consistent whole. The three pieces of music found here work beautifully in unison as orchestral drones lay the foundations for each movement while heavily processed guitar, synth, and piano jostle for the shafts of light that intermittently penetrate the gloom. The soundscapes drip with warmth and hopeful fragility, yet the signature doom-ridden nervous tension is present throughout, seeping into the subliminal textures and impressionistic, distorted swells of noise. There is a great deal of restraint used here and certainly the minimalistic approach gives the tracks on Black Rain the space to breathe and evolve in a very natural way. The record was written over a three-month period where Knox had a self-imposed deadline of completing one piece of music per month to then be released digitally with immediate effect at the beginning of the following month. A deliberate move to be more impulsive and instinctive during the writing process and, for him, a new way of looking at releasing a record. For Fans of: Ben Frost, Mogwai, Tim Hecker, Ben Salisbury. Hand-silkscreened, recycled card sleeve.

WREN Groundswells CD
Groundswells is the third chapter in Wren's seasonal lore exploration, and their first through Gizeh Records. These six melancholy-shrouded sonic ruminations swell between intimate performances devoid of adornment, and evolving soundscapes of auditory ruin. Tracing an elemental arch, Groundswells captures Wren delving into earthen awakenings. Launching into a monochromatic dirge, "Chromed" announces the LPs stylistic intentions, forgoing the trappings of traditional harmony with deliberate pendulums of pitch and tone. Swarms of percussion drag the track to its conclusion in a collage of insidious feedback, with oscillations sculpted by the record's producer, Scott Evans of Kowloon Walled City. Elsewhere, swift variance is displayed in Wrens' deft handling of genre and form, refusing to be solely one of either. The record courses between rigid post-punk, broad waves of dreaded sludge, and austere choral reverberations. Pulsating krautrock themes present in their previous work are revisited, with a focus on embracing archetypal motorik technique, as the album stretches compositions to their furthest tensions through profuse repetition, straining the cracks between. Inviting physical, elemental surrounds into "Subterranean Messiah", Wren allow space for the sudden cloudburst of Middle Farm Studios in the introductory passage via location recording, embracing the interplay between source and locality. Combined with the painterly fretwork and ghostly chants of Fvnerals, the collaboration seeks an emotive new path of melodic vulnerability. In contrast, the closing elegy is layered with disharmonious cycles of agonized cello from Jo Quail. As with other conclusions on the album, the track's commitment to strained repetition is rewarded with sonic climaxes of blackened psychedelia, led by stalagmitic spirals of atonalism. Throughout the album, Wren draws from their long-standing apologue, with a partnership of vocalists showcasing a lyrical and vocal interplay thick with a dense lore new to their compositions. Groundswells brings Wren to an equinox in their earthly contemplations. Ruminating on the decaying inanition that engenders renewal, this record is a revelry in the cyclical, repetitious infinity of planetary. For fans of: Godflesh, ISIS, Kowloon Walled City, Neurosis. CD comes in silkscreened, recycled card sleeve.

LUCIDVOX We Are CD
Firmly established as an influential voice in the burgeoning Russian DIY rock scene, Lucidvox's incendiary mixture of atmospheric psych-rock, heavy riffs, and Russian folk mystery has already gained them both critical attention and audience loyalty outside of their hometown of Moscow. We Are (?? ????) is their first international album release and the next element in their rapid rise. Bands in which all or most of the members learn how to play their instruments just to be in the band are something of a special category in the history of popular music. British avant-gardists Wire and American roots hit-makers Creedence Clearwater Revival come to mind, as do, in varying degrees, post-punk legends like The Raincoats and The Slits. The individual player's inexperience becomes an asset -- they are free to create without the burden of past prejudices -- and the sound attains a mysterious balance. Formed in 2013, Lucidvox comprises four women based in Moscow: Alina (vocals/flute), Nadezhda (drums), Galla (guitar), and Anna (bass). The band's original repertoire consisted of cover versions of songs by Sonic Youth, Pixies, White Stripes, and Warpaint. Being in a "girl band" was, from the beginning, an essential and empowering concept. Lucidvox quickly became a tight circle that encouraged musical experimentation, emotional honesty, and future plans. After a year or so of playing covers, the band began to assemble original material, which had its own sonic footprint. And like everything else in Lucidvox, the songwriting process was highly democratic from the start. Unlike the majority of bands, this process allows all of them to contribute lyrics. The lyrics for the most part revolve around intense personal experiences. While Galla notes that the overall sound of the new album is "more powerful, more rock," the band's trademark post-Siouxsie and the Banshees squall is now more nuanced than ever. There is more depth and space, and more sense of the majestic rumble that the band conjures up in a live setting -- an experience in which the ensemble lays down an interlocked, almost krautrock-like groove. Even as their international reputation has grown, they have never considered singing songs in English, and in the band's sonic explorations, there has always been a subtle nod to Russian traditional music and folklore. Lucidvox is at the front of this growing wave, along with Moscow's Glintshake and the fast-rising St Petersburg band Shortparis.

BUSHPILOT 23 LP
God Unknown Records announce a campaign of releasing the lost albums of '90s post-rockers Bushpilot in 2020. 23 has been lovingly re-edited and post-produced by studio legend Richard Formby (Ghostpoet, Wild Beasts, Darkstar, and a later member of Bushpilot), together with vocalist Ross Holloway. Bushpilot arrived at the avant-garde of the Leeds's punk and indie scene in 1993 with Holloway, Karl Berlin (bass) and Daren Pickles (guitar), formerly of epic noise architects Purple Eternal, playing alongside the more melodic Adrian Gans (guitar) and bolstered by the power of Phil Leigh on drums (previously of Spectral Alice, now founder and owner of Norman Records). 23 is Bushpilot's magnum opus beautifully crafted and totally way ahead of its time. Influenced by Can, Slint, and Talk Talk, Bushpilot signed to Cherry Red in the mid-nineties and recorded two albums before disbanding and heading off in different directions. The album was recorded back in 1994 but left in the archives without seeing the light of day until now. "... these raw and distinctly krautrock and Fall-inspired sounds of Bushpilot feel like a hidden history of what could have been for the era and the direct influence of Malcolm Mooney-era Can is instantly recognisable." --The Quietus

First discovered and reissued by the legendary Rockadelic label in 1990, the album has gained a cult status among new fans of '70s proto-doom and hard rock sounds since then. Bringing it back into print after many years, Guerssen presents the definitive vinyl reissue of Mourning, featuring original artwork and fold-out insert with liner notes, interview with singer John Anderson, and rare pictures. RJF Greater Success in Apprehension & Convictions LP
Originally released in a very limited edition during 1983. The RJF album has gone onto achieve legendary status amongst both collectors and fans of '80s murky industrial underground music. Crawling out from the dark heart of Gothenburg, Sweden to no fanfare whatsoever, this record now commands a high three figure sum on the very scarce occasions it actually appears for sale. It is now considered to be one of the true corner stones of Swedish dark electronic music and, unlike a lot of obscure records from the same period, with very good reason. The record just oozes ill intent from all seven tracks. It's riddled throughout with a grim lo-fi electronic minimalism that makes the record so effective. The tracks run the gauntlet of sparse programmed beats, sustained heavy distortion that oscillates and weaves its way around monotone depressive and painful vocal outbursts as it crawls off back into its dark corner. There's no love to be found here. This reissue comes courtesy of Harbinger Sound. Original artwork and extensive sleeve notes.

STIKDORN & MK BRAUN HENK03 12"
For the third installment of Henk, the two DJs and producers from Cologne, Germany showcase once again a wide variety of styles in their production. With the A1 being a collaboration of the two, the three other tracks are solo works by Stikdorn. "Reset" with MK Braun quickly makes its way into any raver's heart. Fast-paced drums and percussions meet mellow pads and '90s vibe arpeggios, making this a sure shot on any dancefloor in summer. It's clear that the A-side on this one is reserved for the bangers once you dive into "Come Closer". A haunting 303 acid line garnered by steadily pounding drums and vocal snippets reminding you of the early hardcore days making this a must-have for any DJ set. On the B-side things slow down significantly. But only in tempo, not in deepness for sure. "Anemia" is one of these tracks that evolve while floating through space and time, taking you to the trippier and more thoughtful places, either on the dancefloor or wherever you are. "Low Lights" highlights Stikdorn's affinity for breakbeats once again. Perfectly suitable to take your DJ set into another direction or for the early/late hours in the club.

VA The Ladies of Too Slow to Disco 2LP
2020 repress; double LP version. 180-gram vinyl. Gatefold sleeve. Includes download code. With The Ladies of Too Slow to Disco, the How Do You Are? label takes a look at the women who kick-started the female pop revolution in the '70s -- not only covering the big names like Carole King, Carly Simon, or Rickie Lee Jones, but also unearthing lots of overlooked and lost gems of the 1970s LA music scene. As with the two previous Too Slow to Disco compilations, the goal is to reinstate a few unjustly overlooked talents. But above all this is about the music; that vaulting ambition that pours out of these arrangements, lyrics, and melodies, all played by the finest musicians the LA scene could muster. So take a trip and round out your picture of a decade. The style is still Too Slow to Disco. But the inspiration and the achievement is all woman. These much-loved compilations are the brainchild of Berlin cratedigger DJ Supermarkt, the musical luminary who brought J-pop to discerning Western ears back in the late 1990s with his Bungalow Records label and who has been a champion for the reappraisal of smooth music for decades. The first two volumes of Too Slow to Disco were both rightly acclaimed as Best Compilation of the Year by Rough Trade, and this installment brings together another kick-ass roster of lost pop gems. Includes 16-page booklet with liner notes. Includes tracks by Evie Sands, Rickie Lee Jones, Laura Allan, Melissa Manchester, Franne Golde, Valerie Carter, Teri DeSario, Carole Bayer Sager, Carly Simon, Jaye P. Morgan, Lauren Wood, Renée Geyer, Maria Muldaur, Brenda Russell, Leah Kunkel, Amy Holland, Carole King, Doris Abrahams, and Lyn Christopher.

OFEGE Try And Love LP
Imara present a reissue of Ofege's debut album Try And Love, originally released in 1973. Music history is full of miracles and wonders. Ofege is certainly one of them. It's quite easy to imagine this band's story turning into a movie. In 1973, a bunch of teenagers with an abundance of passion for music got their hands on the official school band's instruments and jammed away. Inspired by the psychedelic rock sounds and guitar wizardry of Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, or Led Zeppelin they wrote an album worth of songs and decided to have them recorded. The goal was to press them on vinyl -- one copy for each band member -- as a souvenir of the fun times they had together before their school careers would rip them apart. Shortly after, they found themselves with a major record label contract in their pockets, propelled to stardom in their hometown of Lagos/Nigeria and soon across the whole country. Three studio albums followed in the years to come. The unavoidable enviousness and bickering over "who's the true band leader, who's gets the most love letters" and such led to alterations of Ofege's line-up and subsequently to its decay in 1978. With the turn of the century, Ofege's coming-of-age drama has fortunately found a new generation of fans across the globe and will certainly continue to do so with this dearly needed reissue. It's true what they say: Life's writing the best stories.

This concert from 1976 shows Booker on one of his best performances ever. James C. Booker's performance was exceptionally marvelous and just what blues should be all about. All the talk about his problems and the creation of legends which immediately started after his early death in 1983 (in the waiting room of a rehabilitation clinic), seemed so unimportant and irrelevant that day, just as irrelevant as the timetable of the Hamburg metro; because it does not matter if the last train has already departed (as on that particular evening) with an artist performing many of his own creations but also several blues-classics with so much devotion while being deeply rooted in the spiritual soil of this special city located between Mississippi and Lake Pontchartrain. Recorded October 27, 1976 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany; Recorded by NDR Hamburg. Features extended liner notes in English and German by Michael Laages.

KOLSCH Now Here No Where 2LP
Double LP version. On his fourth album proper, Now Here No Where, Danish producer Kölsch (aka Rune Reilly Kölsch) is charting new terrain. Fans of his "years trilogy" -- 1977 (KOM 276LP/KOMP 107CD), 1983 (KOM 329LP/KOMP 122CD), and 1989 (KOM 373LP/KOMP 139CD) released on Kompakt over the past decade -- were privy to a kind of sonic diary, an autobiography, tracking the artist's early years through three albums of superior, meticulously rendered techno. Calling in collaborators where needed -- most notably, the strings of Gregor Schwellenbach -- there was still something deeply personal going down, not quite hermetic, but internally focused; the albums proved not only Kölsch's mastery of his chosen form, but also his capacity to make techno personal, individual, and to trace histories of the self through music. But on Now Here No Where, Kölsch finds his feet firmly planted in the present. For Kölsch, this makes Nowhere Now Here "an album about life in the year 2020. A time defined by confusion, misinformation and environmental challenges." Kölsch does this with music that effortlessly balances emotional heft with the dancefloor's brimming desires. It's a space that Kölsch has navigated for a while now -- one of techno's breakthrough acts -- but Now Here No Where ratchets up the lushness, making for a delirious drift across twelve tracks that are at once perfectly poised and deeply trippy. "Great Escape" is an elegant swoon, an opener that pivots on a sigh and a prayer; then "Shoulder Of Giants" bustles into view, subliminal clatter and an aching violin line giving way to a riff that glows with fluorescence and iridescence. "Remind You" combines an odd ECM jazziness with notes from a 21st century torch song; "Sleeper Must Awaken" mines huge buzzing synths and lets them float, in and out of sync, with reduced, ticking beats; "Traumfabrik" (dream factory) is oddly lush, the tones malleable and plastic, morphing across a glitching undertow. There are sad, emotional washes of strings throughout the penultimate "While Waiting For Something To Care About", while the patterns of "Romtech User Manual" twist and shape in the light. Throughout, Kölsch never keeps his eye off the dancefloor, and you can tell this is his still his home. The club as a temporary autonomous zone, as a space both of freedom and of politics; somehow, that's all here, Now Here No Where.

BREE, JONATHAN After The Curtains Close CD
Jonathan Bree's fourth album After The Curtains Close sees the producer's trademark orchestral pop take a few unexpected turns both into the experimental and into kitschy territory populated by some of his French heroes of the 1960s. The end result is an album that retains Bree's musical DNA while being fun and varied. What could be described as Bree's "sleazy" album could also be described as Bree's break-up album. Dealing with the break-down of a major relationship Bree opens up to reveal a year of loneliness and mental trauma while also channeling positive feelings by embracing sex and sleaze in his music, subject material more traditionally reserved for the single man. Bree strikes a great balance here between darkness and silliness and he does this without appearing snide, which is a line some artists can seem all too happy to cross. Bree's vocals are on display in a full range of styles, his baritone croon jumps octaves and everywhere in between across the 12 tracks and he is even present singing his own back-up vocals in child-like falsetto ("Heavenly Vision"). Opening track "Happy Daze" is a ray of heady sunshine and wall of strings celebrating worrying about nothing else while in a lover's arms. First single "Waiting on The Moment" has been accurately described as a celebratory break-up song, with cynical and slightly mean lyrics set to a grand and danceable '80s pop arrangement. Bree celebrates new romantic encounters with fun orchestral pop songs full of double entendres and his talent for writing for the female lead vocal has not been so obviously on display since his work with The Brunettes. Britta Phillips (Luna) takes lead vocal duties on "Meadows in Bloom", a tragic Shangri-La's inspired narrative about the pitfalls of sleeping with the drummer. "Until We're Done" is maybe the world's first "orchestral pop club banger" with sexualized modern chart-pop lyrics set to an arrangement that sounds like a strange psychedelic nightclub from a film noir horror. "Children" has Bree feeling obsolete and old at a night-club surrounded by the younger generation. Album highlight "In The Sunshine" has Bree sounding his most vulnerable yet on record, suspicious about a lovers reconciliation over a mid-tempo groove of '70s synths, Omnichords, and a haunting string arrangement. Album closer "After The Curtains Close" discusses the loneliness of an artist who has sacrificed love for the narcissism of a career, adored by sycophants. Also features Princess Chelsea and Crystal Choi.

The oddly-named, eminently talented quartet from the college town of Davis was together less than a year from start to finish, yet within that short time created a record renowned for powerful performances, solid production values, and the brilliance of its song craft, with a full playlist of compelling material like "Electric Sailor", "Lemonaide Kid", and "Trieulogy". Kak can stand nobly alongside records like Surrealistic Pillow (1967), Electric Music For The Mind And Body (1967), Sailor (1974), or the first Moby Grape album (1967) as one of the most satisfying listens of the late 1960s SF rock renaissance. LINJA Velvet Noise LP
Listening to Linja's debut LP makes one think of Polish director Yuri Norstein's gloomy melancholic (yet playful) movies, or perhaps just of a rainy day, or Chopin. Velvet Noise is a collection of seven experimental pieces made by Linja sometime around 2016-2017, using drum ma- chines and a lot of modular synthesizers. The album is woven with simple melodies that crack through the squeaks and the bleeps, eerie pads that fill the voids all sorts of FX. The atmosphere becomes filled with tension when it is playing in the room, as if something is clearly about to happen. Linja's album is not so easy to describe, and yet due to its coherence and storytelling it has a certain feel and personality of a good book rather than just a record. "It transcends its existence as a record." Features MY and DJ Tinder.

MODIFICACION Modificacion LP
The group Modificación is a prime example of what '70s underground and prog rock meant on the Valencia scene. Bands encountered a series of obstacles when making their much freer and more versatile music, which was demanded by the international planet rock. These hurdles varied from the serious difficulty of recording modern and innovative records, impositions by the record label and frequent desertion by band members to pursue interests that were more professional than artistic. The group's origins date back to early 1969, in Valencia's Ruzafa neighbourhood, with an average age of around 16 among its founding members. They adopted the name Modificación, an intriguing name that flagged up their creative intentions and interest in underground sounds, under the influence of bands like Grand Funk Railroad, Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge, Rare Earth, Led Zeppelin... While the bulk of the Valencia rock scene revolved around modest groups making commercial music for dance halls, mostly versions of contemporary hits, they wrote their own songs from day one and set the bar high with daily rehearsals, aiming to perform to perfection. The band's luck seemed to change at a show with the Catalan group Lone Star. Pedro Gené (leader and vocalist of Lone Star) suggested Modificación record a single for the biggest record label in Spain: EMI. "Llegará el día que me quieras" (1971) was a major debut that also brought the arrival of a new vocalist, Juan Bau. Modificación's second record adventure was with the small Madrid label La Corrida in 1972, set up by Félix Arribas and Juan Jiménez, members of the famous Spanish band Los Pekenikes. They would release a couple of singles recorded at the Audiofilm studios in Madrid under the influence of glam, Californian and soft-rock style, international trends at the time. The now legendary freakbeat number "Across The Time" was crafted during these sessions and has become one of the most admired and sought-after singles of Spanish music. This LP brings together all the songs comprised in their three published singles as well as the remaining unreleased recordings from those 1972 sessions in Madrid. An accomplished portrait of one of the most legendary Spanish underground bands from that period whose fans, unable to find the elusive -and now very expensive records, were crying out for an urgent reissue of their work. Extensive liner notes by the renowned specialist Vicente Fabuel and previously unseen pictures have been included here.

THIRD EAR BAND Macbeth LP
"As a luxurious aperitif for the future release of the Elements album (including its extra sauces), Munster Records bring us Macbeth, the staggering soundtrack by the English band Third Era Band for a Roman Polanski's film, recorded and produced in 1971. A magical invitation urging the listener to dive into unsuspected regions of boldness, unpredictability, and an intimate abstract-folkster-experimentalism. According to the founding member Glenn Sweeney, 'the music was called alchemical because it was produced by repetition.' However, mind it, such repetition doesn't follow the same musical structures of, let's say, Terry Riley, Steve Reich or Philip Glass due to its indefinite nature of internal-twisted and tormented passages of a peculiar poetic enchantment. The band, formed in Canterbury, started in 1967 playing an oriental hypnotic-free-form-folk. Signed to the prosperous cult label Harvest, they debuted in 1969 with Alchemy, an instrumental jazzy-psych improvisational album. A fully formed masterpiece came in 1970 on the already aforementioned self-titled opus, also known as Elements. For Macbeth, their third one, just the main chief Glenn Sweeney (assorted percussion) and Richard Coff (viola and violin) remained from the original four-piece line-up. It was recorded when half of the quartet -- Richard Coff (viola and violin) and Ursula Smith (cello) -- had already departed, and they were about to record a third album entitled The Dragon Wakes . . . Aside from a few sessions, this album was never completed. The themes presented on the film were composed in an improvised manner while watching black and white excerpts of the oeuvre. The music, recorded in six weeks at George Martin's Air Studios, in July 1971, has the same unconventional and quite unique dimension as the film itself. It is an auteur music for an auteur film . . . There is an arty-medieval atmosphere overall, and it's folkishly ludic in tracks like 'Overture', 'Iverness', 'Court Dance' and 'Fleance', where the experimental interjections function as colorful devices. 'Fleance' -- with the guest singer Keith Chegwin -- is a scintillating highlight. The poetic assaults of concrete music are present in themes like 'The Beach', 'Ambush', 'Prophesies', as if every drumming fractures, singing seagulls or sharp whistles where conducting us to waves of fear into the unknown. There are other lost beauties in its official 44 minutes like the minimal oboe melody of 'Lady Macbeth' floating as a centipede of dreams or the lyrical guitar chords of 'The Banquet' punctuating a climax of sheer mystery..." --Fernando Naporano

OBJECT BLUE X TSVI Hyperaesthesia EP 12"
Following a stellar run of recent releases including best-of-year EPs from the likes of DJ Plead and DJ JM, Nervous Horizon are back with their first record of 2020m a unique new collaborative EP by object blue and label co-head, TSVI. Hyperaesthesia EP details four sweltering new club tracks -- described by the pair as "body music" -- that mesh together object blue's widescreen, experimental club tones and TSVI's borderless percussive styles. "I was curious to see how TSVI and I could merge our sounds, whether we could supplement each other without eclipsing one another, and I'm so happy with the result," explains object blue. "I never thought I could write with somebody else but this happened so easily. It's been a liberating process, just a pure pursuit of fun, yelling in our chairs when we dropped the beat." Inspired by "ever-present conversations about machines and sentience", the EP's mechanical crux plays out in the narrative of the tracks too; from a sense of machines "waking up" on near eight-minute opener "Thought Experiment" to the frantic, processing energy of "Turing Machine". The record also comes complete with a special remix by Loraine James and vinyl-only bonus track, "Syntax". Hyperaesthesia EP follows a fruitful 12 months for both object blue and TSVI: Following the release of her breakthrough debut EP, Do You Plan To End A Siege?, for Tobago Tracks back in 2018, object blue has since become one of dance music's most crucial new artists.

DYKSTRA, JORDAN The Arrow of Time CD
"We want to fabricate a new music. We imagine a situation in which the sounding together of tones is never taken for granted, is continually renewed and reinvented. We know that the effect of any set of simultaneous tones, by means of the multiplication implicit in the harmonic series, totals much more than the number of notes played. A room can be made to vibrate with hundreds of frequencies by a single chord. We want to enter into a universe of harmony in which it becomes possible to hear into the interstices of what does not sound by means of what does sound. We will use harmony to probe one world, and when that world is known, move from it to another and another beyond that. It is with this state of mind that I listen to the music by Jordan Dykstra (b. 1985). It reawakens in me a primal fascination with the simultaneity of sound. Because of the inventiveness of its compositional strategies, the music inspires a sense of open possibility, of something yet to come, of something yet not quite with us. Dykstra has a creative impulse, shared with many experimental composers, of not wanting to repeat in one piece what he has done in another. Each work seems to begin with a moment in an empty space. When I listen carefully before each piece on this disc starts, I have a keen sense of that space. It must contain an echo of the moment just before Dykstra started writing the piece: that moment when anything can happen." --Michael Pisaro (from liner notes)

HENNIES, SARAH Spectral Malsconcities CD
"In modern experimental music, and especially among a number of musician-composers emerging in America during the Sixties, a fixation on process and awareness became a structural hallmark, exploring the gradual change of sonic materials, built environments, and the human body. Though much maligned as a term by its practitioners, figures like Steve Reich, La Monte Young, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley were among these 'minimal' composers; askew of them were electroacoustic explorers like Alvin Lucier, Robert Ashley, and David Behrman. In recent years, composer Sarah Hennies (b. 1979) is forging new paths of reduction and expansion. Spectral Malsconcities (2018) consists of six linked and varied sections; it is constructed in a way that ensures the musicians are never completely in sync, and in fact they generate sounds that continually destabilize the standard ensemble goal of togetherness. As Hennies put it recently, 'this piece is an example of performers elevating something beyond what I thought it could be. I wrote a piece that I thought would intentionally create mistakes. You ask somebody to repeat a very different polyrhythmic contrapuntal page of music 25 times, and it is going to fall apart at some point and then come back together. However, the musicians are so good that they played it exactly as it was written, which is better than what I thought it would have been if they were messing up...' Taking its cue from a two or three player-one vibraphone piece called Settle, which was composed by Hennies in 2012, Unsettle (2017) is a spare and summarily weighty composition that finds space monolithic and driving. The score is economic, taking all of two pages to spin out 33 minutes of music. It begins with una corda fluttering, the passing of time held in single E notes bent at the edges and limned by vibraphone haze, gradually augmented by rumbling clusters and brassy, clanging bells. The inflection and increase in density among otherwise apposite events create an extremely intense landscape of tension without release, though powerful as well -- the closing minutes of pedal movement, muted piano strings, and bell clatter (à la Iannis Xenakis' Bohor I) lead into prepared twang and supple metallic accents. Ditto the shock of vibraphone and muted clamor at minute twenty, carrying enough distorted overtones to defuse one's skull. Sublime and utterly physical, explosive and statuesque, Spectral Malsconcities and Unsettle are complementary works that display another rich stage of Sarah Hennies' practice. Her world of creativity is welcoming, but like all art of significance, you have to do the work in order to share in the experience. At the end, and wherever that end is, the rewards will be great."

You Can Stop That For A Start is an exclusive album of previously unheard material written and recorded by BOB over a five-day period in 1992. The album is accompanied by a selection of some of the band's favorite demo recordings made between 1988 and 1994. All the recordings in the set have been newly mixed by songwriters Simon Armstrong and Richard Blackborow. BOB's initial line-up was Richard Blackborow (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Simon Armstrong (guitar, vocals). Jem Morris (bass guitar), joined the duo in 1986 and, augmented with a drum machine, they recorded the band's first release, a flexi-disc, released in 1986 on their own House Of Teeth label. The drum machine was replaced by drummer Gary Connors in 1987, and this line-up recorded 1987's "What A Performance" single and the first of three John Peel sessions. Early in 1988, Gary Connors was replaced by former Jamie Wednesday drummer Dean Leggett, and the band recorded their second single, "Kirsty", and their second John Peel session. The two singles were brought together with the earlier flexi disc as the compilation LP Swag Sack, which was their final release on the Sombrero label (1988). All later records were on their own House Of Teeth label. In 1989, the band released a single "Convenience" which was followed by a limited edition/fan club release. After their third and final John Peel session, Morris was replaced by ex-Caretaker Race bassist Stephen "Henry" Hersom, and this final line-up recorded the Stride Up EP in 1990, an LP Leave The Straight Life Behind, the single "Tired" in 1991, and one last 12", the Nothing For Something EP in 1992. ETRUSCA 3D Etrusca 3D LP
Etrusca 3D is a new band that merges two current audio and visual artists from the 21st Century: Francesco Cavaliere and Spencer Clark. The album is the first to be released by Spencer Clark's label Pacific City Discs, as a subsidiary and in collaboration with Discrepant."One cannot underestimate the result of stating the names of certain gods at high voices. Something that sinuous and quiet enters into this disc for you to listen. What if the Etruscan Civilization instead of transforming or amalgamating into the roman one, was instead passed on to other worlds? Were the tombs, their spiral idols and funeral decorations a meticulous method for transmuting to something else? Etrusca 3D is the juxtaposition of two imagineers friendship, as Francesco says, 'because I am Etruscan and you (Spencer) are 3D.' There is a piece of the future of Etruscan civilization contained within this disc. It is with Spencer's remote viewing of a past and future creative culture and Francesco's birthright that we find a true insinuation of civilizations world body. We decided to invoke various Etruscan deities or spirits by sampling Francesco's voice uttering their name. We put them inside the Emax 2 3D machine and we began to play these deities and thus incorporate a fresh and ancient music language to present the 21st Century Etruscan experience. In the meantime, these musical stories turned into Francesco's imaginary storytelling style to further present a narrated record of the intuited activities of Etruscan Gods..." --Francesco Cavaliere and Spencer Clark

TALABOT, JOHN Fin LP
2020 repress; LP version. While staying true to his sound, John Talabot has nevertheless shown a constant evolution as a producer since his first release. He has traced a solid musical path that has turned him into one of the big references of European house and has made him also a highly in-demand remixer. This progression now crystallizes in Fin, his first full-length album for Permanent Vacation -- a record in which the Barcelona mastermind sets aside danceable immediacy to expand his stylistic palette more than ever. For that purpose, Talabot melts all the elements that have constructed his distinctive sound until now and makes them emerge from a new perspective in which the construction of complex song structures, intricate rhythms and super-positions of ever-evolving melodies and atmospheres pick up the baton of the "a kick-drum and a sampler" philosophy of his initial productions. The result brings us 11 tracks dominated by dark ambiances, gaseous textures and bittersweet moods that, above all, reveal a kind of vivacity that's really hard to find in contemporary electronics. Fin is far from being a track collection. From the majestic opener "Depak Ine" to its solemn ending with "So Will Be Now," one of the two tracks that features Talabot's soul- and label- mate Pional, each song traces an overall dialogue with the rest, culminating in a highly emotional journey through Talabot's always compelling and unique musical vision. "Talabot has become an exemplar of a new breed of producers working at the intersection of deep house, disco, and indie pop, and he has carved out his own niche somewhere between the slow-motion theatrics of artists such as Mark E and Tensnake, the globe-trotting jewel tones of Four Tet and Caribou, and the psych-pop rush of Animal Collective and Delorean." --Pitchfork (8.5; "Best New Music")

GORBACHEV, PHILIPP Kolokol Remixes 2LP
Everybody knows the sound of church bells -- the familiar midday clang. Strongly associating this sound with religion, we hardly ever think of it as a long musical tradition. In Philipp Gorbachev's search for new heights, it turned out that the East European Orthodox tradition of bell ringing goes far beyond religious dogma. It's ancient, it's sacred, and it's unchained. It's about liberation, unity of body and soul, and free artistic expression. Church bell ringing has become the core musical practice for the electronic producer and performer in the last few years after a period of excessive club touring around the world. Searching for new ways to challenge and alter his physical and spiritual self, Philipp found his calling ringing bells in Moscow at St. Nicholas Church and Berlin at the Christ Resurrection Cathedral. An experienced raver and drummer himself, Gorbachev couldn't help but build the connection between electronic synthesizers, entrancing techno loops, and the unique sonority and resonance of heavy-weight bronze bells. The result of Philipp's new passion is Kolokol (PGTUNE A003LP). It was first released as an LP on his PG TUNE imprint in 2019 and later evolved into live stage performances, an experimental film, and a full-length documentary exploring the bell ringing tradition in godforsaken monasteries and churches across Russia. With Kolokol, Gorbachev proves that this practice is bound to notions of temple, solitude, spirituality, healing, and awakening which are much stronger than the church itself. "Hope" and "salvation" are the main words for Philipp to describe his path with bell ringing. These are also the words many ravers use when speaking of their life-changing experiences on the dance floor in the temples of powerful sound, hypnotic body movement, and endless purifying vibration. Together with his fellow bell ringers in Russia, Gorbachev took the powerful instrument outside the church to introduce this mind-altering experience in a club and concert setting. The series of remixes by Gorbachev's fellow musicians is another extension of the Kolokol mindset toward the club environment; a call for his friends from the techno world to accept and interpret Philipp's journey of affirmation, focus, and fulfillment. When the time is right again, the remixes of main tracks from Gorbachev's most recent album will fill the sweaty vibrating dance floors where everybody is searching for their own temple, hoping for a purifying catharsis of body and soul. Remixes by Marcel Dettmann, Decka, Barnt, Amanda Mussi, Jens-Uwe Beyer, Bejenec, Inga Mauer, Mashkov, and Ushi333.

KORAY, ERKIN Elektronik Turkuler LP
2020 restock; Gatefold LP version. Technically his second LP after a collection of singles, this benchmark record from 1974 taught Istanbul's musicians and pop fans how to put Turkish folk songs from the 17th century together with meaty, thundering guitar solos. With a crack bass player by his side (Ahmet Güvenç from Bunalim and Baris Manco's Kurtalan Ekspres) and an electrified ba?lama in his hands, Erkin Koray lets his gloomy baritone voice float over wiry double-reed melodies, bulging riffs, and hammer-ons that go on for-friggin'-ever. Savagery begins at home people, so make sure you get a physical copy of the best record by the Turkish Hendrix into your house.

MORROW, CHARLIE America Lament LP
America Lament is a panoramic musical survey of legendary experimental composer/event-maker Charlie Morrow's eclectic works. At just over 40-minutes, America Lament is mysterious, beguiling, and jubilant, comprised of pieces employing everything from hand-made electronics to Irish lap pipes, ecstatic jazz to Schubert recompositions, ambient flutes, and a string quartet. Charlie Morrow and Recital's Sean McCann excavated 50 years of Morrow's bottomless archive, from 1970 to 2020, to present this follow-up to 2018's Recital release Toot! Too (R 041LP). Charlie Morrow (b. 1942 in Newark, NJ) is a composer, sound artist, performer, and innovator. With concert performances and ad jingles (including Hefty trash bags -- "Hefty, Hefty, Hefty! Wimpy, wimpy, wimpy!"), city-wide events and film soundtracks, museum sound installations and hospital sound environments, Morrow's work has been experienced by a wider audience than most creative artists can claim. Charlie's music has a melody and depth to it that is absent from a lot of avant-garde music. His keen interest in all musical styles seem to inform this harmony. Charlie's drive to interconnect people and ideas is contagious and affirming. 20-page booklet with program notes, scores, and an interview between Morrow and McCann; edition of 300.

BROSHUDA Contemplative Figuration LP
With Contemplative Figuration, Broshuda pushes his amorphous, impossible-to-pin-down music in exciting new directions. Stitched together in various European cities over the last few years, it is the artist's most dynamic and ambitious release thus far, drawing equally from musique concrete, beat research, ambient, tape collage, and spoken word. Episodic in nature, the collection functions well as a sort of impressionistic travelogue, with romantic, hazy atmospheres coaxed from borrowed equipment, serendipitous recording sessions with old friends, and even a drum sequence programmed with Mario Paint, among other curios and sleights of hand. Broshuda deftly wrings bonafide cohesion and balance from these disparate source materials, tools, and locations, as on opener "Kakigori," which allows a snaking harmonic drone the space to evolve before exploding it into a sort of seething, dubbed-out pointillism. Later, "Lied Fuer Hase" concocts a potent, humid atmosphere of beautifully evolving acoustic piano loops and elegant narration. Taken as a whole, Contemplative Figuration is a weightless, transportive record, one that is bursting at the seams with ideas, mischief, and a restless spirit. New album by Broshuda after releases on Haunter Records, Phinery Tapes, and Sonic Router. Features Elen Huynh, Mo Chan, and Manta. Artwork by Alex McCullough and Niall Wynne Lewis. Mastered by Helmut Erler at Dubplates & Mastering. Includes download code.

VA Panama! 2: Latin Sounds, Cumbia Tropical & Calypso Funk On The Isthmus 1967-77 2LP
2020 restock. Soundway present the second volume in their Panama! series, showcasing the unique tropical music created in Panama during the fertile decades of the 1960s and 1970s. Panama is one of the world's great crossroads -- a bridge between North and South America, and home to the great canal that links the Caribbean and the Pacific. After soaking up the varied influences of Panama's diverse population, the dancefloors and bars spat out a heady mix that took in the raw vallenato of neighboring Colombia, the soul and funk of America, the calypso of Trinidad and the son and rumba of Cuba, all combined and re-styled in a uniquely Panamanian fashion, making Panama a central spoke in the wheel of Caribbean music. Writer and compiler Roberto Ernesto Gyemant travelled throughout the country in search of elusive records and reclusive musicians, tracking down hopeful tips and half-remembered names and addresses. Two years of digging through dusty warehouses and old radio stations in search of crackly records and dusty photos led to an exhaustive look at the musical culture of this fascinating country. If you think salsa is the sum total of Latin American music, then think again -- the hot sound of Panamanian musica tipica and calypso Español throws everything into the mix for a non-stop journey through Afro rhythms, carnival sounds, tipica soul, and cumbia madness. Listen to the heavy tamborito rhythm of Los Silvertones and you'll hear where the instantly-recognizable, syncopated beat of modern-day reggaeton was born. Check the countrified re-versioning of Willie Colon's classic "La Murga De Panama" -- a perfect riposte to those that think Latin music begins and ends with Shakira. Listen to "La Escoba" by Alfredo Y Su Salsa Montañera and see that the currently in-vogue sound of cumbia owes as much to Panama as it does Colombia. Also features Papi Brandao Y Su Conjunto Aires Tableno, Maximo Rodriguez Y Sus Estrellas Panameñas, Papi Brandao Y Sus Ejecutivos, Skorpio, Los Superiores, Idamerica Ruiz Con Osvaldo Ayalla Y Sus Conjunto, Los Revolucionarios (Soul Revolution), The Duncan Brothers, The Soul Fantastics, The Exciters, Meñique El Panameño Con Bush Y Los Magnificos, Camilo Azuquita, Los Papacitos, Sir Jablonsky, Lord Cobra Y Los Hnos. ONDATROPICA Ondatrópica 3LP/7"
2020 restock. Deluxe triple LP version with bonus 7". Colombian musician Mario Galeano, the force behind the band Frente Cumbiero, and English producer Will Holland aka Quantic, have joined forces to create the Ondatrópica project. Ondatrópica, supported by the British Council, exists to explore and expand the tropical sound of Colombia in its rawest form and to marry it with contemporary influences from around the world. Ondatrópica brings together an iconic group of top Colombian musicians representing both the classic and more modern styles of la musica Colombiana. Artists such as Fruko, Anibal Velasquez, Michi Sarmiento, Alfredito Linares, Pedro Ramaya Beltran, Markitos Mikolta and Wilson Viveros joined a group of younger Colombian musicians, members of both Mario's band Frente Cumbeiro and Quantic's Combo Barbaro, to (re)generate the excitement that positioned Colombian music as one of the most influential in South America. Soundway's exploration into Colombian music began in 2007 with its much-acclaimed compilation Colombia! The Golden Age of Discos Fuentes: The Powerhouse of Columbian Music 1960-76 (SNDW 008CD/LP) which features many original works from the above-mentioned artists. Fitting then, that Ondatrópica came together over 3 weeks in January 2012 in the legendary Discos Fuentes studios in Medellin with one of Colombia's most celebrated engineers and producers, Mario Rincon, who is responsible for some of Discos Fuentes best recordings of the 1970s. As a result of the British Council support for the project, a 10 piece Ondatrópica touring band has been invited to perform at the London Cultural Olympiad on July 21, 2012 as part of the BT River of Music event on the Tower of London Americas stage, following which, the band will also perform at New York's Lincoln Center on July 27, 2012. Ondatrópica's eponymously-titled album fuses traditional Colombian styles such as cumbia, gaita and champeta with boogaloo, ska, beat-box, hip-hop, ska, dub and funk, creating a progressive collection of tracks that re-interpret the tropical musical heritage of Colombia with new approaches in composition, arrangement and production.

VA Kenya Special: Selected East African Recordings from the 1970s & '80s 3LP/7"
2020 restock; triple LP version. Comes with a bonus 7" and free MP3 download. Soundway Records present Kenya Special: Selected East African Recordings from the 1970s & '80s -- a treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings from East Africa. Spread out over two CDs and one triple LP set, Kenya Special is accompanied by detailed liner notes, original artwork and photographs. It follows on from Soundway's much-acclaimed African "Special" series that to date has focused on the highlife and Afrobeat output from 1970s Nigeria and Ghana. Kenya Special is a collection of 32 recordings (most of which were only ever released on small-run 45rpm 7" singles) that stand out as being different or unique as well as some classic genre standards. From Kikuyu language "liquid soul," Luo benga and Swahili Afrobeat, to genre-bending Congolese and Tanzanian tracks recorded in Nairobi, Kenya Special sees Soundway yet again taking the less-trodden path. Many of the tracks featured here are peppered with innovation and experimentation, highlighting how diverse the music scene in Kenya was at the time. In 1970s Kenya the two threads of rumba and benga loosely dominated the music scene. Benga quickly became Kenya's unique contribution to Afro-pop; spreading like wildfire through the interior countryside with its fast, 4/4 machine-gun beat and intricate electric guitar layers. The Congolese take on Afro-Cuban rumba was introduced by touring bands, many of whom settled in East Africa -- influencing bands from Kenya and Tanzania to come up with their own take on this popular style. Alongside these styles were small ensembles and hotel-sponsored bands, playing a blend of music that often included rock 'n' roll riffs, elements of "Afro" music (influenced by West African musicians like Fela Kuti), and multiple other combinations from South African and Zambian guitar styles to disco, funk and Swahili coastal rhythms like chakacha. Painstakingly compiled, assembled and researched over two years by a team of five people from five countries (Kenya included), Kenya Special is a collection that looks beyond the mainstream and brings new life and recognition to some little-known gems and forgotten classics of Kenya's past.

KJELLVANDER, CHRISTIAN About Love And Loving Again CD
Christian Kjellvander's new solo album, About Love And Loving Again, undeniably feels like a big record. The seven songs on this gently unhurried long-player are allowed to build and meander, make unexpected turns, or even pause to look over their own shoulder before moving on, four of them ending way beyond and one just shy of the seven-minute-mark. It comes as a bit of a shock then to learn that this sound that ranges from almost-silence to unbridledly expressive, widescreen hugeness was created mostly as live by a minimal three-piece line-up in a Stockholm studio basement: Per Nordmark on drums; Pelle Anderson on a Fender Rhodes, a Prophet 5, and a Korg Prologue; Christian Kjellvander on vocals, guitars and whatever came to hand, adding just a touch of bass at the end of two songs. It was May 2020 when this trio congregated, a time, of course, when all of Europe was under strict lockdown, with the famous exception of Sweden. About Love And Loving Again is the sound of Christian Kjellvander waving goodbye to the converted old chapel out in the Swedish wilderness where so much of his music of previous years was written and recorded, "Baptist Lodge" that lends its name to the opening song. The song's evocative lyrics contrast the image of an iconic American car with another stand-out line that finds the singer at the outer edges of Sweden. "Cultural Spain", probably the most tightly written and arranged song on the album, was finished following a mad dash across the old continent back to Sweden, just as borders were being closed in all the countries he passed through. Like a lot of this record, its semi-abstract lyrics are full of complex sexual politics. You don't need to be a celebrity sleuth to realize that much of About Love And Loving Again is deeply autobiographical. In fact, the goddess in the opening song is none other than his current partner, Swedish singer Frida Hyvönen, who also sings backing vocals on "Cultural Spain" and took the cover photo of Christian. Meanwhile, from "Actually Country Gentle" unmistakably alludes to the recent ending of his 13-year marriage. Crucially, Christian Kjellvander describes a world that is much bigger than his private self, and yet there is a vulnerability. As an artist who is "constantly trying to look under different stones," Christian Kjellvander has learnt to rely on instinct rather than intention.

SWEETHEARTS, THE Dream Big 12"
The Sweethearts is a project by Tyler Thacker together with Sam Mehran (ex Test Icicles). Songs were written on a tiny Casio between Sam and Zak Mering. Tyler pretty much played all the instruments. As Tyler explains: "This album was recorded a decade ago underneath a bunkbed in a crowded apartment we shared in Brooklyn. At the time, The Sweethearts was just another anonymous moniker among many, intended as a pop-minded musical outlet between primary contributors myself, Zak Mering and Sam Mehran, featuring whatever friends happened to be passing though that day including but not limited to Morgan Whirledge, James Ferraro, Zak Davis, Aaron Frankle, Ian Drennan, Ariel Pink, Ryan Howe. Like so many of the collaborations from those years, these songs and many more floated to the wayside as we each barreled through various other configurative projects, eventually retired to failing hard drives. But the specter of this specific catalogue always haunted me despite shifting primary focus to painting shortly thereafter. Two years ago in July, the world lost one of its most fearless creators, Sam Mehran, and I lost one of my best friends who oozed melody as effortless as breath. These songs are letter bombs to adolescence in the information age: reterritorializing the tropes of heteronormative psycho-sexuality proliferated throughout western pop music on top of self-deprecation, heartbreak, disappointment, indulgence, and loss of innocence. At one point, I caught myself singing harmony to Zak and Sam on a song called 'Tonight's the Night' and it was in that meeting place between the metaphysical and the spirit world, that I finally got to say goodbye to Sam."

LAMONT Hold Dat EP 12"
Tectonic welcome Lamont to the team! Bristol's bendy-beats whizz kid is mainly known for dropping jaws with his releases on Swamp 81 and its various offshoots. This time, he's been chipping away at four fine-cut gems, especially for Tectonic -- bringing some darkside vibrations in addition to his usual bounce. "Hold Dat" runs at 135bpm, sitting in-between grime, dubstep, and housey/techno/whatever that thing Lamont usually does. Charged with a disgusting, totally greasy bassline, this one drops hard and keeps going -- quality moves for (now, mostly imaginary) dancefloors. "Push" takes it down a notch, to 130 for a more heads-y work out, laden with crackling, fizzing sonics -- and heavily punctuated by sub-bass hits. The energy levels step back a touch, while building intensity. "Brain" sees Lamont working more familiar territories -- sending a pounding 4/4 kick drum out to hold together a series of collapsing percussive hits and warping melodies -- as a "brain" sample, simply haunts your brain. The EP closes off with "Open Letter", taking things into a dread-space; dub-wise, deep, and dangerous. The lurching bass hits take charge and push you through layers of echoed hits and micro-melodramas, to round off this great EP in fine style.

FENNESZ Plus Forty Seven Degrees 56' CD
...37" Minus Sixteen Degrees 51'08". Warehouse find, last ever copies... Originally released by Touch in 1999, this is Christian Fennesz's second full-length solo album after the highly-acclaimed Hotel Paral.lel (Mego, 1997). Fittingly, "+47° 56' 37" -16° 51' 08" takes its title from the coordinates of Fennesz's backyard garden, the site of the open-air studio where these tracks were created. Initial copies came in an oversized gatefold card sleeve, with booklet insert; the second edition was in standard jewel case format. This third edition is in digipak format with unaltered audio. The album has been out-of-print for two years and was Fennesz's first solo album for Touch, preceding his breakthrough Endless Summer (Mego, 2001). Anticipating his next album, The Black Sea (Touch, 2008), on +40º..., Fennesz uses guitar and computer to create shimmering, swirling electronic sound of enormous range and complex musicality. His lush and luminous compositions are anything but sterile computer experiments. They resemble sensitive, telescopic recordings of rainforest insect life or natural atmospheric occurrences, an inherent naturalism permeating each piece.

CLEARED The Key CD
Cleared is the Chicago-based duo of Steven Hess and Michael Vallera formed in the latter part of 2009 as a project to focus on repetition and patience as central elements of composition. Hess and Vallera have previously worked in various contexts of improvisational, long-form and experimental music -- Hess contributed to Fennesz's Seven Stars, released on Touch in 2011 (TONE 044CD). Cleared is an effort to take the knowledge both have gained from these arenas in order to build hypnotic patterns of sound and rhythm. The Key was recorded in the spring of 2019 at Electrical Audio in Chicago Illinois with engineer Greg Norman. After a silence of several years, Cleared went into the studio with a set of drawings and notes describing the arcs of various systems for the creation of soundscapes and rhythmic patterns. There was no rehearsal, demo recordings or any other preparation besides theses diagrams which were designed by both Hess and Vallera in tandem. The logic behind this strategy was to erase the confines of previous releases and return to the origin of the project, which simply began as an open improvisation between the two musicians, centering a focus on slow, gradual changes and a meditative sensibility. The recordings were made with a specific attention to sonic detail and fidelity, resulting in hours of material that was arranged and mixed over the next year by Michael Vallera in his home studio. The resulting four tracks were further investigated and reimagined by Philip Jeck, Christian Fennesz, Bethan Kellough, and Olivia Block, adding another form of The Key as a collection of discreet and weighted sonic explorations. JACASZEK Gardenia CD
"Gardenia is an existing land located at the Limpopo province of South Africa, right at the border with Botswana. The place's real name is Mmabolela and it's a private nature reserve covering 6500ha of subtropical savanna and part of Limpopo River. In November 2019, I had a chance to visit the location and participate in an annual residency for composers and sound artists called 'Sonic Mmabolela', initiated and curated by Francisco López. We lived in an isolated property in the middle of savanna having a unique opportunity to exist in undisturbed touch with the African wilderness. All the natural sounds later used to create Gardenia were captured there -- during longtime recording sessions over the virgin interior of Mmabolela Reserve. The album's field recording content was selected from several hours of birdsong, calls of frogs, insect noises, sounds of trees, bushes, grass as well as non-living natural elements like stones or shells. These field recordings were later digitally processed and used as part of nine musical arrangements. However, the recording sources and the location of Gardenia is defined, it was not my intention to document a South African natural soundscape nor create any other kind of strict concept album. All I do in my work is an affirmation of beauty hidden in various aspects of the Creation." --Micha? JacaszekRecorded, composed, and produced by Micha? Jacaszek. Photography + design: Jon Wozencroft. The self-titled album recorded at Boston's Ace Recording Studios in 1967 is a cult classic of multi-genre cover tunes, including sensitive renditions of Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home" and The Drifters' "Up On The Roof," a rocking take of The Spencer Davis Group's "Give Me Some Loving" and an agreeable pass of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me". There is rhythm and blues, heart-drenched ballads, soul, and garage rock too. Keyboardist Brad Waterman, drummer Marc Solomon, and saxophonist Bill Douvris were all longstanding group members and this self-titled issue their rarest release. Licensed by Flash.

SIR LORD BALTIMORE Sir Lord Baltimore LP
Trading Places present a reissue of Sir Lord Baltimore's self-titled album, originally released in 1971. Fresh from their US tour supporting Black Sabbath, Brooklyn-based heavy metal trio Sir Lord Baltimore expanded to a quartet for the recording of their self-titled sophomore album, released by Mercury in late 1971. The new addition was guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Joey Dambra, brother of guitarist co-founder, Louis Dambra, adding a dual-guitar element to their hefty sound. The album begins with the epic "Man From Manhattan", a symbolic allegory of a resurrected Christian icon in a new setting; in contrast, "Where Are We Going" captured the rawness of the group in live glory and "Chicago Lives" a twin-guitar attack. Somehow, the band did not survive long after its release, though Joey later recorded with John Lennon; this reissue spins at 45 RPM for maximum fidelity. Licensed from Cherry Red. Gatefold sleeve.

ST. JOHN, BRIDGET Thank You For... LP
Trading Places present a reissue of Bridget St. John's Thank You For..., originally released in 1972. The English singer and guitarist Bridget St. John was introduced to the London folk scene by guitarist John Martyn, her rich and unusually deep voice making John Peel one of her greatest champions, and when Peel formed the Dandelion label in 1969 with former Elektra record plugger Clive Selwood, the original intention was to issue St. John's music. Following debut album Ask Me No Questions (1969) and follow-up Songs For The Gentle Man (1971), 1972's Thank You For... had Martyn's stunning guitar on "Fly High" and an individual reading of Buddy Holly's "Every Day", along with plenty of beautifully-moving St. John originals. Licensed from Cherry Red. Gatefold sleeve.

NORMIL HAWAIIANS In The Stone/Where Is Living? 7"
When Upset The Rhythm released Normil Hawaiians' lost album Return of the Ranters back in 2015 (UTR 076CD/LP), the band members got back in touch with each other after a 30-year break and starting playing music together again. Out of this the group played a launch show for the album and followed that up with more concerts, including an appearance at Supernormal, a residency at the Edinburgh Festival, gigs at Cafe OTO, and supporting Richard Dawson in London too. Throughout this time, Normil Hawaiians revisited their original songs for these live performances. However, for a group always so interested in evolving their sound and seeking nuance, it comes as no surprise that they shirked the idea of a faithful retread of old material in favor of reimagining their songs. The group experimented by pushing their songs into new inventive dimensions, still progressive at heart, but now imbued with a cosmic uncanny. A cinematic, even pastoral approach that was always quietly present has come to the fore. The quaint weirdness of folk song, the humanity of communal practice and the group's ecological mindedness have all found a place in Normil Hawaiians' current sound world. With this conducive atmosphere brewing, the band's first new songs in decades started to emerge. Being far-flung across the UK, the Family Hawaii encamped to Tayinloan, a small village on the west coast of the Kintyre peninsula in Scotland with the intention of recording new music. They set up their own studio in an isolated, windswept house overlooking the sea and started the tape rolling. From loose, improvised sessions and reflective periods of listening in Tayinloan, Normil Hawaiians captured the moment. "In The Stone" is a motorik thrill of distorted guitars, locked rhythms, and morphic resonance. Guy Smith is joined by Zinta Egle on vocals, skillfully sharing lyrics informed by Alan Garner and Nigel Kneale's ideas around recurring events being linked to place and historical artifact; a kind of residual haunting known as "Stone Tape" theory. In keeping with the context of the song, sounds from several previous live recordings of the track were woven into its present being. Flipside "Where Is Living?" is a decidedly more delicate affair of questioning lyrics and eerie traces, droning strings, and impressions smudged. This resultant 7" is a tantalizing glimpse of Normil Hawaiians now, an echo from the past, an echo from the future.

LOS PICAPIEDRA Kabwlu LP
"While Discos Fuentes was known for recording all sorts of interesting sounds from traditional folkloric Colombian music to the latest popular international styles, every once and a while they would put out a 'novelty' record, perhaps to exploit a passing fad, and at times the label would green-light something strange or even outlandish. Many of those left-field releases have their merits and have subsequently become collectors' items over the years. One such case is the mysterious Los Picapiedra (which translates as The Flintstones, no doubt inspired by the 1960s American sitcom cartoon show), a short-lived studio group with one album to their name, 'Kabwlú' (an unpronounceable, invented 'caveman' term that is also untranslatable, but seems to have been the 'traditional rhythm' of Los Picapiedra's 'homeland'). What is interesting about the record is that it is very musically diverse; not only are there the requisite genres that could be found on similar Colombian teenage-oriented groups' records of the time, such as cumbia, gaita, rock, twist, and pachanga, but there is also a smattering of surf, doo-wop, Latin jazz, guajira, ska, and calypso. But what makes the whole thing so special is the odd, off-kilter arrangements, spooky tunings, rudimentary clanging percussion, invented 'cave' language, prominent twanging electric guitar and many zany sound effects. Much like its namesake American cartoon The Flintstones, Kabwlú trades in creative anachronism, mixing 'folkloric' and 'modern' elements with calculated 'caveman' humor that works on many different levels. For instance the title tune seems to have been inspired by the pachanga craze and recalls the vibe of Ray Barretto's massive 1962 hit, 'El Watusi', but it has a certain joyful simplicity and rock-solid underpinning that elevates it beyond mere novelty or exploitation -- and argues for its timely reissue for today's audience. The band was a studio invention that had no major significance in Medellin's live music activity. However, several of Los Picapiedra's songs were very popular in Colombia as well as Venezuela and especially in the 'rebajada' (slowed down) version as played by the 'sonidero' sound system DJs in Mexico, such as 'La Hossa'." --Pablo E Yglesias (aka DJ Bongohead, Peace & Rhythm) Additional research by Luis Daniel Vega. Part of Vampisoul's reissue series of classic Fuentes LPs. Presented in its original artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

PINA CON LA REVELACION, JUAN Juan Pina Con La Revelacion LP
"At the age of 24, Juan Piña formed the eight-piece La Revelación with his brother Carlos, releasing their first album in 1975 on Discos Zeida. This self-titled debut LP of Piña with his group is something of an anomaly in his discography as subsequent albums would feature a different sound and concentrated almost exclusively on Colombian coastal Caribbean and 'sabanero' genres. Although Juan Piña's debut record never made much of a splash, it is an excellent little slice of Colombian mid-70s madness, with a very diverse sound. An interesting and joyful sounding mix of New York style salsa, Cuban son montuno, and guajira with Colombian tropical flavors, the simple, spare arrangements featured electric guitar, piano, Latin percussion, two trumpets, occasional sax, and Juan sang lead while Carlos backed him on chorus. It also sounds like Joe Arroyo may have done 'coro' chores on Juan Piña Con La Revelación (Arroyo was a very close friend of Juan and sang chorus on several Revelación albums). This album is hard to find in the original edition, but collectors in the know treasure it for its two hot salsa tunes ('Negro Con Salsa' and 'Chana', both written by famous Chocoano composer and vocalist Alfonso Córdoba 'El Brujo') as well as producer Rafael Mejia's salsa guajira 'Hogar Campesino' and the genius rendition of the Peruvian classic 'Virgines Del Sol'. A beautiful and mature sounding work for the relatively young Juan Piña and his crew, and well-worth rediscovery by today's Colombian music enthusiasts." --Pablo E Yglesias (DJ Bongohead of Peace & Rhythm) First-time reissue. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl and presented in its original artwork.

SALCEDO Y SU ONDA TRES, JIMMY Maraguango/Moogambo 7"
Many music fans will remember Jimmy Salcedo due to his wonderful work as arranger and producer with the duo Elia and Elizabeth. The celebrated anthology La Onda de Elia y Elizabeth (VAMPI 160CD/LP) made half the world aware of a handful of lost pearls in Latin America's underrated pop music history. Their delicate songwriting acquired, after his treatment, a special tropical aroma that even included the funk influences received by Salcedo at that time. Jimmy Salcedo (Barranquilla, Colombia) was a talented and charismatic musician from the bohemian and jazz scene in Bogotá. After touring some time with Los Be-Bops, his first band, he founded a new group, La Onda Tres. His increasing popularity boosted after conducting a TV show of musical and comedy content: El show de Jimmy. He released with his band, La Onda Tres, a few LPs and singles on Famoso, a Codiscos sublabel, that had a limited distribution, mainly in Colombia only. Here are two songs from the mid-70s that seem to have been conceived to round off a perfect dancefloor-oriented 45. "Maraguango" is an irresistible mix of Afro-Latin percussion and catchy tropical harmonies spiced up with Moog keyboard sounds, fuzz and wah-wah guitars and even touches of Hammond, in a psychedelic funk style. On the flip, "Moogambo" is an exhilarating Moog-driven instrumental with a heavy Afro-funk rhythm that could have easily been recorded by any of the many solid Afro-American bands following the teachings of James Brown, George Clinton, or The Meters at the time. This song has never been available on a single before. Both songs are reissued here for the first time, acknowledging the undisputed genius of Jimmy Salcedo.

TAPAJOS/PEDRO DOS SANTOS, SEBASTIAO Tudo E Moda/Sorongaio 7"
The ION studios, located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Balvanera, have been the usual setting for recordings by Argentine artists as popular as Les Luthiers or Charly García. In the early 1970s they also hosted Brazilian guitarist Sebastião Tapajos for several sessions accompanied by other musicians such as Arnaldo Henriques, Maria Nazareth, or Pedro "Sorongo" Dos Santos. Two albums and one single would be published in the Argentine record label Trova of the recordings along with the latter. After the great acclaim of our recent reissue of their second album from those sessions, with the killer dancefloor tune "Tornei A Caminhar", Vampisoul present this perfect follow-up that includes the exclusive "Tudo É Moda", an amazing samba funk number previously only available on a rare 7" released by Trova at the time. A great club tune for discerning DJs and a delight for the dancers! On the flip, "Sorongaio" shows the connection between the delicate guitar of Tapajos and the surprising experimental percussion of Pedro Dos Santos, with some flute touches (most likely played by Danilo Caymmi). A beautiful add-on to the much-hailed Pedro Dos Santos album Krishnanda (1968) in the collection of anyone with an interest in the most adventurous sounds of Brazil and also an essential work in the discography of Sebastião Tapajos.
