MAXIMUM JOY Station M.X.J.Y. LP
2020 repress. "A focal point for the unique punk-funk that was coming together in Bristol as the bridge from the '70s to the '80s arrived, Maximum Joy was formed by Glaxo Babies multi-instrumentalist Tony Wrafter and 18 year-old vocalist Janine Rainforth. Soon they drafted in additional Glaxo Babies in the form of drummer Charlie Llewellin and bassist Dan Catsis, along with guitarist John Waddington, fresh from The Pop Group. The group set about making a one-of-a-kind mix of funk, punk, pop, jazz, dub, soul, afrobeat and reggae; creating a brilliant burst of danceable tunes wrapped around elastic basslines and complex percussion, punctuated by melodic horns and stabs of guitar, all of it highlighting Rainforth's naturally enthusiastic vocal style. They immediately took their place on the rosters of influential labels like Y and 99 with iconic debut single 'Stretch', as the band had clearly captured something special. Entering 1982, Kevin Evans had replaced Catsis as Maximum Joy set out to make what would be their only full length LP. Recording at Berry Street and The Lodge with producers Adrian Sherwood (On-U-Sound legend), Dave Hunt (the Flying Lizards and This Heat) and Pete Wooliscroft (Kate Bush, Talk Talk, Peter Gabriel and OMD,) the band would mix practiced grooves with imaginative improvisation. The results were absolutely jaw-dropping."

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE My Bloody Underground 2LP
2020 repress, black vinyl. Gatefold 2LP version on 180 gram vinyl. 2013 release. This is the first Brian Jonestown Massacre album in over four years, recorded with select members from the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Icelandic musicians, and Mark Gardener (Ride). Recorded in Liverpool and Reykjavik in August 2007 and completed in Reykjavik in October 2007. This is the 13th full-length album from the Brian Jonestown Massacre released on Anton's label, A Recordings. This album offers a mix of the traditional Brian Jonestown Massacre sound with a more experimental and avant-garde approach. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist/singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995, The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp! Records, the label which gave them their start, and later for TVT and Tee Pee. BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many L.A. and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Revelation 2LP
2020 repress. 180 gram double LP version, now on black vinyl (for the first time). Revelation is the first album that was fully recorded & produced at Anton's recording studio in Berlin. It is the 14th full-length release from The Brian Jonestown Massacre, recorded from late 2012 to early 2014. Anton Newcombe refined the 13 tracks that appear on the album, which also features Ricky Maymi, an original member of the band. It also features Joachim Alhund (Les Big Byrds), Constantine Karlis (Dimmer), and Ryan Van Kriedt (Asteroid #4) plus vocal performances in Swedish by Joachim Alhund (Les Big Byrds) on the opening track. This album brings the traditional Brian Jonestown Massacre sound mixed with Eastern influences and brings it up to date with the benefit of all the additional weirdness that's been discovered in the past 40 years.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Third World Pyramid LP
2020 repress; LP version, black vinyl. Third World Pyramid is the 15th full length release from The Brian Jonestown Massacre recorded in early 2016. It is the first album that was fully recorded & produced at Anton Newcombe's new Cobra Studio in Berlin. Third World Pyramid encapsulates the old and new sounds of the band, with the nine tracks starting from the melancholic "Good Mourning" going through to "Assignment Song" - which is a cover of Nina Simone from her 1971 album Gifted & Black - and the latter tracks show the ever-changing dynamic of the band, acknowledging their past but also looking to their future. Featuring Ricky Maymi, Dan Allaire, Joel Gion, Collin Hegna and Ryan Van Kriedt. Also, Emil Nikolaisen from the Norwegian band Serena-Maneesh joins the band on this album, plus vocal performance Tess Parks and Katy Lane. Anton Newcombe has been a very busy man these past two years, kicking off with the critically acclaimed Brian Jonestown Massacre album Revelation in 2014 (AUK 030CD/LP). After a successful UK and European tour, the BJM followed this up with the +- EP (AUK 031EP, 2014). 2015 saw the release of Musique de film imaginé (AUK 032CD/LP); an imaginary film soundtrack album featuring the track "Bonbon" which has, ironically, been used in Dheepan, the Palme D'or winner at Cannes film festival 2015. In June, Anton and Tess Parks embarked on a well-received tour of the UK and Europe to support the release of I Declare Nothing (AUK 120CD/LP, 2015). Anton finished 2015 with a BJM mini-album release entitled Mini Album Thingy Wingy (AUK 033CD/LP).

TIMMONS, CY The World's Greatest Unknown LP
Private press classical guitar & voice only masterpiece from 1974. Mastered & half-speed cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. Vinyl pressed via RTI. "Cy Timmons, born in 1941, is 'The World's Greatest Unknown' singer-songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. His style may be called batida Americana: unusual bossa nova technique marked by the art of guitar percussion and turning his voice into a variety of instruments such as flute, trombone, synthesizer and more. But basically, it is difficult to specify the genre where his music belongs because it has been developed individually and heavily colored by his love of American music such as cool jazz, traditional pop, early R&B and many years of entertaining in various musical venues including Café Erewhon ('Nowhere' spelled backwards) which he ran in Atlanta. Rather than an imitation of bossa nova, Cy applied the bossa concept of expressing samba alone through classical guitar and vocals to expressing good old American popular music alone and so developed a new 'traditional' American sound, a sound that was honed in part through an encounter with Judy Davis of Oakland, California, the stars' vocal coach whose students included Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Mary Martin and Barbra Streisand. He himself produced three albums of his music. On the first: Cy Timmons (1972) he was backed by a small orchestra, but the second, The World's Greatest Unknown (1974), and the third Heaven's Gate (1998), were Cy alone and show the true worth of his music that also has something in common with João Gilberto's White Album and Voz E Violão."

SANO, AKHIRA Penetrating, For Filtration Cassette
Akhira Sano's Penetrating, For Filtration was manufactured on C60 Super Ferro tape for a low noise floor, high output, and an incredible warm sound. Japan's Akhira Sano is a young master of slow, ambient, electro new age music. His compositions are highly organic, growing and flowing with great patience and care. But, like in nature, imperfections and incidentals are allowed to evolve producing sublimely primal and imperfect music. In a world where everything can be made perfect, Sano's work is delicate, shimmering, and electric; abolishing and preserving time simultaneously. Sano creates painterly music (he is also a painter) based on the themes of error and constraint. He is a visionary sonic architect who sees his musical structures as incomplete; always unfinished. His debut on Sun Ark Records in 2019 was very well received and his demo for Important was immediate and compelling. Lose yourself in these two long tape sides on the second official release from Akhira Sano. Packaged in a purple tinted case with silver shimmer printing.

MUNIR Circuit Line EP 12"
No stranger to the label, Munir (AKA Midnight Runners) is one of Southeast Asia's most unique talents. A deep record collector, he has put his hometown of Bandung, Indonesia on the map with a relentless output of self-released edits drawing on Indonesian funk, Chinese pop, and Middle Eastern psych as source material over the last several years. Equally skilled as a producer, Munir's signature boogie-funk sounds have graced labels such as Neon Finger, Shaken Palms, and No Bad Days. Darker Than Wax unleash Munir's sounds on the label once again, with a strong sonic step forward from the artist and perhaps his most polished work yet: Circuit Line EP. Blending his signature boogie sound with Italo-disco influences, the record brings forth four stylishly crafted modern dancefloor cuts. "Circuit Line" is built on a foundation of reverence to the arpeggiator, driven by neon synth tones racing each other to the finish line. This racing theme defines the record throughout, painting images of classic '80s racing games on standout tracks "Finish Line" and "Race Car". "Interlinked" takes on a more subdued approach, building in intensity and weirdness with each synth line layered on. Showcasing Munir's prowess with percussion, "Pit Stop" is a feverish club workout rounding out the record as a complete package for the discerning DJ's arsenal. Crafted in his Bandung studio with love for classic hardware and respect for its musical influences, Circuit Line EP represents a turning point for Munir's sonic evolution.

ARTAUD, ANTONIN Pur En Finir Avec Le Jugement De Dieu LP
Limited 2020 restock. Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of Pur En Finir Avec Le Jugement De Dieu by Antonin Artaud. Antonin Artaud was a French poet, dramatist, and director and one of the most important figures in 20th century European theater, and especially the avant-garde. His piece "Pour En Finir Avec Le Jugement De Dieu" was recorded in 1947 to be aired on French radio. But the project was shelved not only for its scatological, anti-American, anti-religious content, but also for its avant-garde sound, with screams, cries, grunts, glossolalia, and general cacophony, all of which the radio thought would be too shocking for the listeners of post-WWII France. Now regarded as one of his most brilliant works, the piece is finally available again on vinyl courtesy of Fantôme Phonographique. Features the voice actors Maria Casarès, Roger Blin, and Paule Thévenin. Edition of 500 (hand-numbered).

LEFT OUTSIDES, THE Are You Sure I Was There? LP
"At last, a new studio LP from superb London duo, The Left Outsides, to follow up on 2018's amazing All That Remains. The basic building blocks remain the same -- half of the sound is Alison Cotton and her viola and keys, the other half is Mark Nicholas with a stunning array of guitars -- but the structures they create this time are darker and more forbidding than their antecedents. This album feels very much a piece of the season in which it is being released, as the leaves strip themselves from trees and the sky grows colder, greyer by the hour. More than once while Are You Sure I Was There spun I was put in mind of the classic Rainy Day LP, masterminded by Kendra Smith back in 1984. The Left Outsides possess the same sure grasp of that place where sorrow, ecstasy and psychedelics meet in a shower of dying stars. The tunes here are wonderful. Most are new, although a few have been heard before in different forms (if you knew where to listen.) 'The Wind No Longer Stirs the Trees' (with its glorious blend of backwards and forward motion) was on a 7" lathe, backed with 'As Night Falls' (a beautiful ode to the promise of winter.) The track 'Séance' was first recorded as part of a celebration of Help the Witch, the debut novel by former music critic Tom Cox. And 'My Reflection Once Was Me' (which recalls The Trees' epic tunes by combining massive blocks of raging guitar with Alison's steady vocals) was featured on the live A Place to Hide LP (FTR 552LP). The other compositions are all-new and utterly great. The tunes that Mark sings tend to evoke a certain '60s whisp. Whether it's the Floydian lilt of 'Only Time Will Tell,' the freakbeat pop of 'November on My Mind,' or 'Pictures of You,' which stacks a dreamy '60s overlay upon contempo pop structuring. Alison's vocals often display a more folky essence. 'The Stone Barn' has a vibe very similar to some of Sandy Denny's later solo work, grounded by stately piano chords. 'Things Can Never Be the Same' centers on a gorgeous mid-paced vocal performance, encased in spinning webs of very elegant guitar. And the conjoined vocals on 'A Face in the Crowd,' sit atop a huge fuzz riff, sounding like the perfect anthem for the new Slow Music Movement. They won't back down! And you shouldn't either..." --Byron Coley, 2020

FOREVER AMBER The Love Cycle LP
Guerssen Records present a reissue of Forever Amber's The Love Cycle, originally released in 1969. A holy grail item for psychedelic pop aficionados, Forever Amber's The Love Cycle is, along with Dark and the first Complex album, one of a triumvirate of must-have private pressings from the UK. Sounding like a blend of Pet Sounds (1966) and Odessey & Oracle (1968) but with a charming, homemade, lo-fi vibe, The Love Cycle was a concept album masterminded by talented songwriter/arranger John M. Hudson (a kind of Brian Wilson figure), who found in Cambridge band Forever Amber the perfect vehicle for his songwriting ideas. The Love Cycle was recorded in the summer of 1968 at a makeshift studio, located in the basement of a music shop. Consisting of a song-suite revolving around the meeting, courtship, and break-up of a young couple, the result was a stunning album filled with heavenly vocal harmonies, electric harpsichord and memorable hooks, including some intense psychedelic moments (the heavy phasing of "The Dreamer Flies Back" and more). Released in 1969 as a private edition of 99 copies, The Love Cycle remained buried until its discovery in the late '80s by psychedelic collectors. Bootlegged several times, the first official reissue came in 2007 thanks to David Wells/Tenth Planet. Out of print for several years, Guerssen Records a new vinyl reissue of this essential psych album. Original artwork in backflaps sleeve; includes color insert with rare photos and detailed liner notes by David Wells. RIYL: Zombies, Beatles, Beach Boys, Left Banke, Honeybus, Bee Gees.

MIRAGE, THE You Can't Be Serious LP
With one foot in the harmony beat-pop of the Hollies and other in the early psychedelic pop experimentation of Revolver-era Beatles (1966) and Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, The Mirage left behind a string of 45s and unreleased studio recordings, a selection of which is presented here for the first time on LP. Featuring UK psych classics like "The Wedding Of Ramona Blair", "Hold On", "Ebanazeer Beaver", "Mrs Busby", and many more. The Mirage were a quintet from Hertfordshire, England, formed in 1965. Fueled by two gifted songwriters (Ray Glynn and David Hynes), they were soon recruited by Dick James (music publisher of the Beatles and the Hollies) as session musicians. Allan Clarke and Graham Nash from the Hollies were so impressed with them, that they took them under their wings, helping them to get a deal with CBS. Between 1965 and 1968, the Mirage released and self-produced seven singles for different labels including titles like "The Wedding of Ramona Blair" (pure psych-pop perfection, included on Rubble in the '80s), "Hold On" (a mod-psych classic), "Tomorrow Never Knows"(a surprising cover released at the same time as Revolver), "You Can't Be Serious", and more. But they also recorded lot of stuff that never saw the light of day at the time. These unissued songs run the gamut from magical Hollies inspired harmony pop to pure psychedelic pop, highly influenced by early Pink Floyd and Revolver era Beatles -- some of these tracks were included in the 90s on famous bootlegs like Artifacts From The Psychedelic Dungeon but now it's the first time they're all collected on a legit vinyl compilation, making You Can't Be Serious: 1966-1968, the missing album The Mirage could have released at the time and a must for any UK psych aficionado. Includes four-page insert with rare photos/memorabilia and detailed liner notes by Stefan Granados (author of The Beatles and Apple Records: Those Were The Days 2.0 book).

WALKER JR., BARRY Shoulda Zenith LP
"The sky goes on forever in Barry Walker Jr.'s Shoulda Zenith, and it's crackling with unexpected lightning. The Tennessee-bred, Portland-based pedal steel master subverts his instrument's tradition for lachrymose, innocuous Rootzak?. Instead, he ventures to outward-bound strata more frequently traversed by Sonny Sharrock than Gram Parsons. 'So often, the pedal steel is used as a textural flavor,' Walker says, 'but it really can breathe fire itself.' Evidence for that claim abounds on Shoulda Zenith. Sprouting out of the strategies Walker used on his 2012 LP of Henry Flynt and Paul Metzger-like fiddle aberrations, Banjo Knife, the music on Zenith goes on similar extravagant tangents -- but with pedal steel. Assisted here and there by bassist Scott Derr and drummer Dana Valatka, and others, Walker has synthesized his love for country, New Age, freeform freakouts, and ecstatic music on Zenith. One can hear traces of the laid-back sinuousness of Texas psych-rockers Cold Sun, Fushitsusha's craggy, acid-rock excoriations, and Doug Sahm's sprightly melodic sweetness. One may notice 'Insect Interlude' adding new colors to Terry Riley's Rainbow In Curved Air and 'Up The Fan, Into The Keyhole' taking Sharrock's Black Woman to Appalachia. Tilt the head just right and 'Shoulda Zenith' and 'Trinity Payload' may be the most psychedelic things a pandemic-besieged mind will encounter in 2020. Cosmic country didn't know it needed its own Inventions For Electric Guitar, but now that it's arrived, the Gilded Palace Of Sin is starting to seem like a dilapidated bungalow."

CORTINI, ALESSANDRO Risveglio 2LP
2020 restock; gatefold double-LP version. Though known as a touring and recording musician associated with Nine Inch Nails, Alessandro Cortini has really come into his own via his Forse trilogy, and his 2014 Hospital Productions debut, Sonno (HOS 412CD). For his Hospital follow-up, he maintains the grittiness and intimacy introduced on his debut, but expands on it, offering a wider spectrum of emotion and depth. Like Sonno, Risveglio was written and recorded while on tour. The drive to create intimate works during late-night downtime reveals Cortini to be committed to a personal vision beyond the call of duty. While Sonno was created using only a 202 and delay, Risveglio adds a TB303, synced to the 202. In Cortini's words, "The 303 can be such a haunting instrument used in a certain way, and I felt it completely fit the mood of the previous work I have done on the 202, especially when given a specific location in space... it's such a living instrument." The addition of TR606 gives one of the pieces a rhythmic pulse that separates it from the preceding synthscapes and renders Risveglio an altogether more dynamic affair than Sonno. With Risveglio, Cortini emphasizes the imperfections and visceral textures of electronics absent from so much contemporary solo synthesizer music. He carves out a similar space to that formed by Kevin Drumm's releases for Hospital in the worlds of drone and noise by finding the emotional and, ultimately, human voice within synthesis.

LAGIN, NED Seastones: Set 4 and Set 5 LP
First copies on transparent blue vinyl. Important Records announce the release on vinyl LP of Ned Lagin's Seastones Sets 4 and 5. Ned Lagin's Seastones is a pioneering electronic composition interweaving metaphors from nature, science, art and music and the origins of music. Reflecting the technology, science, modern art, new ecological awareness and optimism of the times and culture, Seastones embodies the history of electronic music by taking full advantage of tape music, analog synthesizers, and computer technology. Originally released by the Grateful Dead's Round Records in 1975, Seastones' reputation as a gem of electronic music was further enhanced by the celebrity of the musicians who contributed to the source material. Seastones musicians include Ned Lagin (processed piano, clavichord, organ, prepared piano, electric piano, synthesizers), Jerry Garcia (processed electric guitar, pedal steel guitar, voice), Phil Lesh (processed electric bass), David Crosby (processed electric guitar and vocals), Grace Slick and David Freiberg (processed vocals), and Mickey Hart and Spencer Dryden (percussion). This new LP presents two crafted Seastones sets (Sets 4 and 5, 18 tracks) drawn from the entire Seastones composition and contains gorgeous extended processed vocals by Garcia, Crosby, Slick, and Freiberg, and beautiful abstract instrumental passages by Lagin and all. Lagin is considered a pioneer in the development and use of minicomputers and personal computers in real-time stage and studio music composition and performance. Seastones was influenced not only by modern jazz and forms for improvisation, but also by Lagin's studies of early, Renaissance, and 20th century music. He was a touring, studio, and guest keyboard player with the Grateful Dead from 1970 to 1976. Seastones composition began in 1970, while Lagin was attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1974, with a minicomputer and an E-mu modular analog synthesizer, Lagin was able to play a polyphonic keyboard and hybrid computer-controlled instrument, as well as create simple generative musical processes. The normal controls found on the analog synthesizer were customized to accept computer control and the system was large enough to input audio and control voltages from the other musicians' instruments. This means that the synthesizer controls which were processing the incoming audio from the musicians could be controlled by what the artists were playing. These control voltages and timing signals derived from the amplitude envelope shapes of what the musicians played. Each track on Seastones is what Lagin refers to as a "moment form". Each track is self-contained, like a sea stone on the beach. Lagin: "... Like real sea stones, the Seastones moment forms are each a placetime, a time island, a droplet of time. They are composed and synthesized and skeletal improvisational forms..." Seastones: Sets 4 and 5 is available in this audiophile edition of 2000 copies. This audiophile quality LP was cut by Golden Mastering and pressed at RTI to insure excellence in reproducing Seastone's rich analog sound.

LAMPS People With Faces LP
"These days, good news is hard to come by, but here's some: Lamps, LA's notoriously unprolific noise-merchant trio, are ready to release their spectacular fourth album called People With Faces, out on In The Red Records. Produced by Ty Segall at Val's, Lamps' first recorded output since 2012's landmark LP Under The Water, Under The Ground finds them breaking adventurous new terrain. I'd say they've matured, but I'd only say it behind their backs. Stalwarts Monty Buckles (guitar, voice, keyboards!!!) and Josh Erkman (drums, voice) double down on Lamps' trademark cloak of effects-laden guitars and hammering drums, and new(ish) member Denée Segall jumps into the fray with her Poly Styrene-wail and monolithic bass, adding depth both sonically and lyrically. Their trademark abrasiveness is still present, but it's burnished it into something richer, more layered. Don't worry, it still kicks your head in..." --KD. Feb 2020

VA This Is Techno Jazz Vol. I 2LP
This Is Techno Jazz Vol. 1 is a genre defining collection of music from artists coming from the jazz and techno scenes like Distant Echoes, TUN, Tensal, Mattia Prete, VSK, Fabrizio Rat, Gianluca Petrella, Flat Maze, Luigi Ranghino, Wrong Assessment, Irakli, Key Clef, and more. Together, these contemporary innovators perfectly define the label's vision for jazz and techno fusions. Dystopian label associate and Out-er co-owner Distant Echoes opens up with "Faction 200" featuring Gianni Denitto on sax. It is a cosmic adventure with freeform sax lines driving above rippling synths and broken beats. Milan based Wrong Assessment's deeply hypnotic sounds here feature the experimental jazz quartet Gamapawa, with swirling pads drifting about to make a mysterious atmosphere as distant trumpets bleed in-and-out of the mix and walking bass recalls the atmosphere of '70s jazz fusion. Heavy and industrial sound designer and audio engineer VSK then remixes the Torino Unlimited Noise Trio's "Jason" into a loopy, glitchy, unresolved bit of deep techno with thoughtful jazz chords and plenty of dubby bass weight. Tensal is with "Devourer of Senses", a straight-ahead slice of linear techno that is powerful but also intriguing thanks to the off-grid keys, increasingly intense synths and dark sax motifs. Lecce's techno dreamer and forward-thinking DJ, promoter, and producer Mattia Prete offers "Burning Man" featuring Israeli pianist Uri Gincel and Berlin based experimental guitar player Daniel Calvi. It's a cavernous and absorbing track with freeform jazz drums and heavy drones. Dreamy and abstract techno man Chevel can make all forms of techno, and here remixes Antares Mates's "Movimento 2" into an experimental track with bright synths, sharp sax phrases. and melodic rain over a jittery beat. Producer and piano player Fabrizio Rat and brilliant trombone player Gianluca Petrella are another accomplished Italian pair and their "Turn" is an elastic deep techno track. Irakli and Daniel Calvi's contribution is a dark and menacing piece with sci-fi synths that make for a turbulent intergalactic soundtrack, and "Petardo Boy" by producer Stefano Mori and pianist Uri Gincel aka Flat Maze is a tender and intimate techno cut with gentle keys and a sense of playfulness in the wonky chords. Synth magician Key Clef and piano legend Luigi Ranghino are label regulars who close things out with "Piano Movimento 1", which layers up intricate phrases of jazz piano, evolving echoes of drum machines and surging bass. It's poetic, intense, and thrilling.

ROXANNE, ANA Because Of A Flower CD
"The sublime songs comprising Los Angeles-based musician Ana Roxanne's second record, Because Of A Flower, germinated gradually across five years, inspired by interwoven notions of gender identity, beauty, and cruelty. She describes her process as beginning with 'a drone element and a mood,' then intuiting melody, syllables, and lyrics incrementally, like sacred shapes materializing from mist. The experience of identifying as intersex informs the album on levels both sonic and thematic, from spoken word texts borrowed from tonal harmony textbooks to cinematic dialogue samples and castrati aria allusions. It's an appropriately interstitial vision of ambient songcraft, a chemistry of wisps and whispers, sanctuary and sorrow, conjured through a fragile balance of voice, bass, space, and texture. Despite a background studying at the prestigious Mills College in Oakland, Roxanne's music rarely feels conceptual, instead radiating an immediate and emotive aura, rooted in the present tense of her personal journey. She speaks of the flower in the title as a body, singular and sunlit, as many petals as thorns, an enigma beholden only to itself. But whether taken as surface or subtext, Because Of A Flower is a transfixing document of a rare artist in the spring of their ascension."

LAFAWNDAH The Fifth Season LP
"After a banner year that witnessed Lafawndah release her first album Ancestor Boy, the debut of her soundsystem Fara Fara, and further incursions into film, contemporary art and fashion, the ceaseless artist returns with another plot twist: The Fifth Season. Inspired by her encounter with author NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy, Lafawndah both pays homage to and extends further the elemental, emotionally charged myths of Jemisin's books. These are stories where a broken heart can tear apart a continent. In contrast to the precision-tuned industrial productions of Ancestor Boy, The Fifth Season breathes a different kind of volatility. Inviting a new degree of spontaneity and freedom into her process, Lafawndah's collaborators -- Theon Cross (tuba), Nathaniel Cross (trombone), Valentina Magaletti (percussions), and Nick Weiss (keyboards) -- encircle her confrontational character studies with iridescent, cinematic chamber-bass moves. These are torch songs for when it rains ash, creation ballads for when the earth turns inside out. Ghosts of Art Ensemble of Chicago and Rahsaan Roland Kirk color the air, yet Lafawndah's mastery of pop songcraft, vocal production and razor-honed clarity of purpose cut through. In addition to the Lafawndah originals, The Fifth Season features interpretations of hybrid-folk godfather Beverly Glenn Copeland's 'Don't Despair' and acid-impressionist prodigy Lili Boulanger's 'Old Buddhist Prayer.' Album highlight 'You, at the End' deploys a poem by poet-performer Kae Tempest to aching, rift-tearing ends, and French dream-trap wraith Lala &ce features on 'Le Malentendu'. The Fifth Season anchors Lafawndah as a descendent of forebearers Brigitte Fontaine and Scott Walker -- a born theatric whose acid humor warps the sub-continental undertow of her emotive storytelling. Lafawndah's elementalism on The Fifth Season finds her imagination more agile than ever, and recent live shows have evinced a drive to push these compositions further out, deeper, and more aflame."

In fact, the album yielded a Top 20 hit in "New York Groove."

SPIRAL GALAXY Spiral Galaxy LP
Repressed. "Traveling the spaceways as Spiral Galaxy, flautist/painter Sara Gossett and treated guitar/machines manipulator Plastic Crimewave (of Plastic Crimewave Syndicate/Galactic Zoo Dossier magazine) have created devotional sonic voyages and droney soundscapes with the occasional rhythmic pulse to conjure the textural and kosmische vibe of '70s German seekers like Yatha Sidhra, Emtidi, Popul Vuh, Achim Reichel, Sand, and early Kraftwerk. The duo has just completed their first album, expansive tracks they had been performing live on tours in the UK and Italy, plus USA events like Chicago Psych Fest, Milwaukee Psych Fest, Far Out Nashville festival, and The Feed Me Weird Things series in Iowa City. Treating the studio as an instrument, new layers, instruments and collaborators were added to the heady mix, like special guests Jean-Hervé Péron of legendary avant-German collective Faust (who Spiral Galaxy was lucky enough to open for, and collaborate with on stage); Kawabata Makoto of Japanese communal psychlords Acid Mothers Temple on chants and spoken voice; and Alisha Sufit of UK '70s eastern-folk band Magic Carpet (also chanting her heart out). Also appearing on the album are guitar wunderkind Ryley Walker (playing backwards guitar on this, not easy!), Taralie of Spires that in the Sunset Rise on Terry Riley-ish circular sax, sitar-player Hands of Hydra, Moog-maestro Will MacLean of Protovulcan, and Christian Luke Brady of meditative Virginia cosmonauts Fargon. What results is a dense, hallucinogenic, sonic tapestry of an LP that covers many moods -- from divine soundscapes to Krautrock's motorik beats, doomy experimental pieces to dark acid folk, and beyond. Expansive kosmische sounds with sitar and electronics, that travels from devotional soundscapes to motorik beats, freak-folk and beyond. Guest-starring: Jean-Hervé of the legendary Faust, Kawabata of Acid Mothers Temple, Alisha Sufit of Magic Carpet, and Ryley Walker. For heads who dig Yatha Sidhra, Emtidi, early Kraftwerk, La Düsseldorf, Popol Vuh, and Sand's Golem."

ASH RA TEMPEL Gin Rose at the Royal Festival Hall 2CD
"Ash Ra Tempel, the veterans of the German 'Berlin School', gained worldwide recognition with their album releases 1971-1973.Their self-titled debut-album from1971, in the line-up Hartmut Enke (bass), Manuel Göttsching (guitar), Klaus Schulze (drums), radically deconstructed elements of rock and blues, as it was combining electronic sounds to encourage new listening habits. Whilst Göttsching and Schulze later followed their solo careers, they always stayed friends and, over the decades, showed their musical solidarity in collaborations, with innovative electronics and guitar. But it was only in 2000, when they decided for this short intermezzo to perform together again under the Ash Ra Tempel banner. Julian Cope (author of Krautrock-Sampler) had invited Göttsching to his 'Cornucopia Festival' in London, and the two musicians took the offer as a great opportunity for a one-time reunion concert at the Royal Festival Hall on April 2, 2000. Preparing the music for this the concert had also led to a new studio album recording entitled Friendship. Both of the recordings, the studio album as well as the live recording from the London concert 'Gin Rosé', had been originally released in 2000 in a small edition, which was sold out very soon. The studio-album Friendship had already been re-released in 2014 (CD). Now, and due to the many requests, here it is again -- after 20 years, the re-release of the long-awaited live-album Gin Rosé. Göttsching and Schulze blend tradition and vision, and they do not simply reanimate ideas of the 1970s. The spirit of this unique liaison is reflected in every single note of this still up-to-date concert, showing these two musicians playing joyful, familiar and undeterred."

HEAD & THE STRANDS, MICHAEL The Magical World of The Strands LP
2020 restock; Gatefold LP version. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Deluxe reissue of Michael Head's classic 1997 album The Magical World of The Strands. "Head, who is no stranger to either classy, baroque pop or neo-psychedelia, has composed an album of gorgeously illustrated songs that are lushly orchestrated by a standard rock quartet augmented by a flutist (Leslie Roberts) and a string quartet. The result is an album that, while little known, is a classic, a masterpiece of modern chamber pop... this disc walks the line between the deep, darkly expressionistic chamber work of the Tindersticks to the airy, classically augmented breeze-laden pop of Nick Drake à la Five Leaves Left -- long before the millennium obsession with Drake's work began anew because of a Volkswagen commercial" --AllMusic. "This is an elegantly unified work, tough yet guileless, and rustic in tone when the idea of lads with beards and banjos was unheard of. The balance of masterful songcraft with an in-the-moment looseness is probably the defining mood, the group uncrowded and unhurried as they feel their way around 11 folk-influenced, strings-augmented, subtly layered tracks" --Mojo (five stars). In 1993, Head teamed up with his brother John, his longtime drummer Iain Templeton, and two new recruits, Michelle Brown on bass and Les Roberts on flute, and began two years of recording sessions. The sessions came to a halt when Head was offered a major label deal, not for his current work, but for him to record as his previous band Shack again. Weaving rough mixes and sketches -- by engineer Steve Powell, made in Liverpool -- with completed mixes by producer Mark Coyle (Oasis), Stephane Bismuth, the French promoter who initiated the Strands sessions, finally released The Magical World of The Strands on Megaphone in 1997. This reissue includes a 20-page booklet containing new liner notes by Head himself and photographs testifying to the album sleeve's work-in-progress.

CLEVELAND, BARRY Stones of Precious Water LP
"The title of guitarist Barry Cleveland's 1986 album -- Stones of Precious Water -- conjures images of incandescent gems, harvested from hallowed streams and held aloft to glimmer and catch the light in their many facets. And perhaps this is the truest analogue for the music contained therein. Recorded between 1981 and 1983, in mostly improvised recording sessions, the disparate nature of Stones' creation is alluded to only by the breadth and variety of sounds it encompasses. Stones of Precious Water is a revelatory collection that maps its way through textural fourth world ambience, shimmering new age, gently propulsive kosmiche, and jazz-inflected prog. These sounds are sewn together with a deftness of performance and sonic character which reveals them as branches of the same tree, or perhaps more appropriately, a handful of glittering stones. Six of the ten tracks contain contributions from Kat Epple and her late husband Bob Stohl (aka the epoch-defining new age duo, Emerald Web), adding flute, synthesizers, and bells. Between the years of 1981 and 1983, Cleveland worked with this duo and alone, allowing serendipity to play a significant creative role in their music. Many of the pieces began as improvisations, or simple structures that served as springboards for deeper exploration. Making his first forays into multi-track recording, Cleveland used a basic TEAC 4-track cassette recorder, and this rudimentary piece of equipment proved to be a useful tool for compositional exploration. By flipping and reversing the tape, slowing the pitch, and altering and layering different performances, Cleveland stretched the sound of his guitar across the expanse of the tonal canvas. Stones of Precious Water stands as a remarkable document of experimental self-recording, improvisational collaboration, and restless creative expression. Morning Trip is exceedingly happy to release it on Vinyl LP for the first time."

VALLIE, SUZANNE Love Lives Where Rules Die CD
After a hard spell, heartbroken and drifting, Suzanne Vallie aimed to make a driving record rich with sympathy, high romance, and dedicated to the magic of good-timing. Other themes on the album include dogs, surfers, and the supernatural. Vallie, a sorta-recluse living in rural Big Sur, California, is known for her improvisational performances where she freestyles lyrics and tells stories, both mythical and rowdy. She wrote the bulk of Love Lives Where Rules Die during the bummer summer after a breakup. It was a time when she drove up and down Highway 1 trying to blow out the speakers of her '94 Honda. The 11 songs of Love Lives Where Rules Die were largely live-tracked over five days. Suzanne Vallie and a core band of California collaborators flew out to upstate New York during the last warm days of September 2019. Vallie and her producer, Rob Shelton, chose Dreamland Recording in Hurley, New York, for many reasons. The analog signal flow sounded embracing. The studio, a hundred-some-year-old church, had room for the whole crew to live-track. Some said a ghost might come around. What's more, much of the band was already on tour out East, playing a run of shows with both Luke Temple and Meerna, double duty every night. They were plenty warmed-up. Opening with "Ocean Cliff Drive", Vallie sings of driving on the winding cliff side of Highway 1, blinded by fog and rain. The title track, "Love Lives Where Rules Die", begins with baritone guitar calling in a story of a broken heart among good company. With no way out in a three-day storm, Vallie asks friends to sing her love songs. The party anthems, "Morro Bay" and "High With You", celebrate friendship and the delicious urge for fun with Springsteen length lyric sheets. The album features production and keys by Rob Shelton (Meernaa, Sis, Luke Temple, Kacey Johansing), guitar by Blake Kennedy (The Range of Light Wilderness), guitar and vocals by Carly Bond (Meerna, Sis), guitar and bass by Doug Stuart (Meerna, Brijean), percussion and drums by Andrew Maguire (Mirah, Vetiver, Meerna) with contributions from violin virtuoso, Edwin Huizinga (Acronym, Dark Watchers), percussion by Mark Clifford and Bob Ladue, and backing vocals by Paul Spring, Emily Ritz (Yesway, Honeycomb), and Molly Sarle (Mountain Man). For fans of: Sharon Van Etten, Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter, Karen O's Where The Wild Things Are soundtrack.

TAPSCOTT CONDUCTING THE PAN-AFRIKAN PEOPLES ARKESTRA, HORACE The Call LP
2020 restock. Available on vinyl for the first time in 40 years, Outernational Sounds presents Horace Tapscott's burning, spiritualized 1978 set, The Call. One of the unsung giants of jazz music, the composer, bandleader, arranger, pianist and community activist Tapscott was the undisputed keystone of the grassroots Los Angeles jazz scene. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, his radical community arts and music formations the UGMA (Underground Musicians Association) and his protean big band, the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, were at the epicenter of music, culture, and politics in the Los Angeles area. Hundreds of musicians passed through these groups and played their part. Major figures such as Arthur Blythe, Azar Lawrence, Jimmy Woods, John Carter, Bobby Bradford, Sonny Criss, Ndugu Chancler, and dozens of others all paid dues or just got down with Tapscott, not to mention the core Arkestra regulars who have since become celebrated names; Nate Morgan, Jesse Sharps, Adele Sebastian, Dadisi Komolafe, and Gary Bias, to mention only a few. Tapscott and the Arkestra were down on the ground -- playing fundraisers in parks and streets, organizing teach-ins and workshops for young and old, mixing it with radical theater groups, firebrand poets, political radicals, Black separatists, community groups, and churches. As a result of this grassroots community focus and Tapscott's antipathy to the music industry, the Arkestra didn't record for nearly two decades. That only changed when long-time jazz fan Tom Albach started Nimbus Records. The label was initiated specifically in order to document Tapscott and his circle, and the first three records showcased Horace and the Arkestra. The Call was put together from two studio sessions in April 1978, one at Hollywood Sage and Sound, and one at United Western -- the latter session had the addition of a string section, who can be heard on the moody Cal Massey composition "Nakatini Suite" and Jesse Sharp's swinging modal trip, "Peyote Song No. III," with its swirling soprano solo. In keeping with the communal nature of the Arkestra, the other two compositions, "The Call" and "Quagmire Manor at Five A.M." are also by Arkestra members. But at the center of the music is the builder of the Ark, the visionary whose original call to action started a movement whose legacy continues to this day -- Horace Tapscott. Vinyl-only release, 180 gram pressing by Pallas, fully licensed from Nimbus West founder Tom Albach.

VA Brown Acid - The Eleventh Trip CD
"Riding Easy is now in the double digits of brilliant long-lost, rare, and unreleased hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal tracks from the '60s-'70s and clearly this has become a bonafide archaeological movement as each new edition leads to more exciting new discoveries. Like the label has done throughout this series, all of these tracks were painstakingly licensed legitimately and the artists were paid. Here are just a few of the delights herein: This Trip opens with Adam Wind's 'Something Else,' featuring groovy crooning and a very acid-damaged guitar riff that meanders across key signatures like it ain't no thing. This 1969 single by the Tacoma, WA band predates grunge by 20 years, but the band's heavy psych and murky tones are just the stuff Northwest heroes Mudhoney sought so fervently at their peak. Lead singer Leroy Bell's excessive vibrato gives the tune its charm, but the heavy breakdown in the middle is the real payoff. Later, Renaissance Fair take things in a very weird, very fun and undeniably heavy direction with an insanely distorted organ that sounds like a monstrous vacuum cleaner over dirge rhythms and growling vocals on their -- let's reiterate -- weird 1968 track 'In Wyrd.' Think if someone left a copy of The Doors' Strange Parade out to warp in the sun on a blown-out toy record player, and then visiting space creatures attempted to imitate what they'd heard. Finally, Crazy Jerry sends this edition off on a high note with 'Every Girl Gets One,' featuring crunching riffs, rollicking electric piano, stop 'n' start rhythms and a curious telephone call sounding like a creepy answer to the Big Bopper's 'Chantilly Lace.' Crazy Jerry is the alter-ego of guitarist Jerry Ciccone, who can also be heard on a few soul/funk and rock records from the '70s, including The Left Banke's second album. But here, Jerry is... well, simply crazy. Get comfortable and prepare for yet another deep, deep dive into the treasure trove of dank, subterranean, wild-eyed and hairy rock 'n' roll."

NEGATIVLAND The World Will Decide CD
"Negativland's mirror image sequel to last year's True False, The World Will Decide turns the focus away from the very human inability to accurately define reality, and towards the technologies being built to do a better job at it. But if sorting true from false seemed like a full-time job back when all one had to keep track of was one's own mind, life alongside the machines built to connect everyone only seems to multiply the uncertainties. On The World Will Decide, those uncertainties are made almost deliriously danceable: a netweb of densely sampled voices melting speech back down into music and back again, into what everyone can agree are the real questions -- did that firefly really land on your finger? Would you like to be arrested? Does this app connect you to people, or replace them? Is this post an example of inauthentic behavior? Do people have to die? Or, as one of the many sampled voices on this work assures the listener: we can really feel like we're here."

VA Actions For Free Jazz LP
"Smalltown Superjazzz was a free-jazz subsidiary label to Smalltown Supersound from 2005-2012. The label has been dormant in the years 2012 to 2019, but is now reborn as the AFJ-Serie. The AFJ-Series represents a new start -- built on the foundation and heritage of the Superjazzz label. AFJ-Series is short for Actions for free jazz. This was the slogan for Smalltown Superjazzz and was borrowed at the time from Don Cherry & Krystzof Penderecki's The New Eternal Rhythm Orchestra track "Actions For Free Jazz Orchestra" from the 1971 album Actions. AFJ-Series is a series and a subsidiary label within Smalltown Supersound. AFJ-Series is proud to release this compilation which features music from 40 releases, spanning almost 20 years on Smalltown Supersound, Superjazzz and the AFJ-series. The idea with the compilation is to bring the Superjazzz era into the AFJ-Series, but also to leave it behind -- and start fresh. A requiem and rebirth combined. The idea came from Mats Gustafsson and was inspired by the famous 1964 ESP-Disk' sampler, which with its hard edit approach has become a classic in its own right. The task of selecting, editing and structuring the material was given to Lasse Marhaug, who has been part of the Smalltown family for more than 20 years. Marhaug spent months plowing through the entire catalogue, and while the main goal was to give a total overview of Smalltown's wide range of releases in the improvised/jazz/free music field, Marhaug's choices and juxtapositions almost plays as a new piece of music. So here it is -- 40 tracks of total freedom. Or the universality in music of improvisation as Derek Bailey called it." MCPHEE/LASSE MARHAUG, JOE Harmonia Macrocosmia LP
"Joe McPhee is a legend of modern music, which from the release of the classic Nation Time album almost 50 years ago has had an incredibly diverse career that's spanned a wide range of expressions, from jazz and improvised music to experimental and electronic free music. McPhee's life in music could basically be read as a map of leftfield music of our time, but after all these years he refuses to stand still or lock back with any sense of nostalgia. After 30 years of making electronic music Lasse Marhaug is now synonymous with Norwegian noise music, with hundreds of releases and countless collaborations and projects to his name, including music for film, theatre and dance. In the last ten years he has also made a name as a producer for other artists, including Jenny Hval and Okkyung Lee. McPhee and Marhaug has known each other since the early 2000s, but only in 2015 did they find time to record together as a duo. The result is Harmonia Macrocosmica, an album that the two considers a science fiction inspired work. For McPhee it can be read in the linage of his 70s work with John Snyder, as well as collaborations with Pauline Oliveros and the Nihilist Spams Band. Marhaug of course is well versed in this field, but McPhee's sax and voice puts his electronics in a whole new perspective. The pair also found inspiration in early electronic music and vintage science fiction films, with McPhee describing going to the cinema in the 50s as a kid to see Forbidden Planet and being blown away by its electronic score as the start of a lifelong love of cosmic music."

Sonor Music Editions launches the first official vinyl reissue of one of the finest and sought-after Latin jazz albums ever made in Italy in the 1970s, Black Sound From White People by the prince of Italian funk, Augusto Martelli. An amazing, top-notch recording from 1972 that also includes stellar players like Tullio De Piscopo's rolling drums, sleazy flute by Giancarlo Barigozzi, and dope basslines by Pino Presti. For sure the pinnacle of Augusto Martelli's music and the best album from his long career as composer, conductor, arranger and TV presenter. Black Sound From White People delivers a plenty of groovy Euro funk tracks played with a clear black music influence, from swirling jazz-funk to fusion, percussive jams with more samba and Latin beats, funky Latin jazz chock-full of psychedelic flutes. A really essential piece from the Italian funk music production.

MUSLIMGAUZE Sadaam's Children LP
Long-time Muslimgauze fans with keen eyes and/or photographic memories may immediately notice something about the newly unearthed Sadaam's Children album; with some slight orthographic differences, it just about shares a name with a short track from the classic Narcotic (Staalplaat, 1997; the similarity and the difference is pretty much expected from someone who both liked to reuse names and didn't care for consistency in spelling as Bryn Jones did). While none of the four lengthy tracks found on Sadaam's Children actually sound like sparse, clean string sounds of Narcotic's "Saddam's Children", three of them never previously heard extended versions of tracks previously found on that release -- well, one is both an extended and truncated version, but such are the idiosyncrasies and joys of the ever-complex Muslimgauze oeuvre. That extra-special track is the mighty, dubbed-out "Gulf Between Us", which does appear on Narcotic as a brief palate cleanser but in the same year was also released by Staalplaat as a standalone track in its ultimate, 23-minute form. That sprawling version takes a rather circuitous route as subtle electronic elements wear away at the track; the more compact ten-minute version here instead dials up the bass wobble for a track that's about as chilled as Muslimgauze ever gets. "Believers of the Blind Sheik" and "Effendi" are slightly more straightforward, in that both are about twice as long as their Narcotic excerpts, with the former's echoing drum hits and quiet pulse proving to be a natural fit with "Gulf Between Us" at the beginning of the release and the even sparser, slower building version of the latter seeing the album out in slightly abstract fashion. Before that track, however, there's the previously unreleased and similarly lengthy (at nearly 17 minutes) "Trikrit Brotherhood Quartet", the only track of the four here to get more of Jones' traditional layers of instrumentation and distortion to form a track that seems to shimmer in the summer air like a mirage. As "Trikit Brotherhood Quartet" winds its way from roiling static to more of Jones' classic use of hand percussion it's clear that these extended editions make for another compelling look at Jones' archives and the seemingly infinite flexibility of his muse.

MANSOUR, MOHAMED Sweet Dreams 7"
Janet Erskine Stuart said that "Egypt was full of dreams, mysteries, memories". Her music, like her architecture is somehow hardwired into us, more than we know. When Oum Kalthoum was at her zenith, Egyptian music circled the world on shortwave, picked up and marveled over by millions who didn't understand a word she sang but understood the emotion in it. Something different might be said about an astonishing single by Mohamed Mansour, now issued by Staalplaat as a limited edition 7" single. Many will know the words on the first side, because they come from the Eurhythmics song "Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This", its glorious, operatic line translated into Arabic as "Ahlamna el Helwa". When the Lebanese singer Mayssa Karaa re-recorded Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" in Arabic for the American Hustle soundtrack, many were reminded that the sheer beauty of the original song went beyond limitations of language. So, it is with Mansour's version of the Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox classic, a soaring line over a universal beat. To make the single doubly special, the flipside is Mansour's reworking of Woody Guthrie's "All You Fascists Bound To Lose", a song that had resonance when it was first performed but which seems ever more relevant today. Mansour's version is called "Hatehhsare", but its message remains the same: evil never prevails for long. Mansour's music is a compelling synthesis of European, American, and Egyptians styles and sounds. It is genuinely international. Just as shortwave radio fans used to twiddle dials to find Oum Kalthoum phasing up and down in the ether, so Mansour's music has a global presence on the internet, but how fine to have it in physical form too, in a beautifully designed sleeve by Staalplaat. Mo is a lyricist, vocalist and physicist from Egypt, Scotland and Kuwait, who has never worked on the 1st of May. Hand screen-printed cover in black and gold, hand sewn.

ONLY NOW & OROGEN Avuls Cassette
Longstanding collaborators and Bay Area-based experimental duo Kush Arora and Lucas Patzek, aka Only Now & Orogen, return with Avuls, the project's sophomore release. Building on the unearthly, black hole transmissions and creaking, exospheric ambience of their self-titled debut, Only Now & Orogen present an abyssal, elemental broadcast from another unchartered extra-terrestrial zone. Remote and astronomical yet tied to a newfound sense of rhythmic structure, Avuls navigates a course through inverted beat-led frameworks, surging detonations of sub-bass, and severely turbulent, monumentally scaled soundscapes. Amidst this large, slow-moving cyclone of sound sit fragmentary emergences of choral voices and Gregorian chants; a distant, esoteric presence within dense eruptions of attritional noise and infinite recesses of low end. In harsh, pointillistic detail and through infernal surround sound, Only Now & Orogen channel dub, noise, and power electronics, evoking a distorted, ritualistic inflection on the Voyager Golden Record; a mass of tectonic motion and friction; a storm in deep space.

IKE YARD Ike Yard LP
Restocked. "Ike Yard remain a legendary band of early '80s New York City -- at once immensely influential, yet obscured by a far-too-brief initial phase. Their debut EP, the dark and absorbing Night After Night, sounds almost like a different group, so rapidly would Ike Yard evolve towards the calmly menacing electro throb of their self-titled LP. Originally released on Factory in 1982, the album put Ike Yard's indelible mark on the synth-driven experimental rock scene then emerging all over the planet. While historical analogues would be Cabaret Voltaire's Red Mecca or Front 242's Geography, opening track 'M. Kurtz' makes starkly clear that Ike Yard is a far heavier proposition. With a thick porridge of bass, ringing guitar and strangled/stunted layers of voice, these six pieces are densely packed and perversely danceable. 'Loss' sounds like a minimal techno track that could have been made last week, while 'Kino' combines Soviet-era imagery with sparse soundscapes à la African Head Charge's Environmental Studies. Ike Yard somehow pull off the toughest trick in modern music: making repetition hypnotically compelling through subtle variation. The effect of Ike Yard's first LP can be heard in many genres -- from industrial dance labels like Wax Trax to electro-punk bands and innumerable European groups (Lucrate Milk, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, etc.). The fact that the cover artwork does not include any photos of the band, but rather features the original catalogue number (FACT A SECOND) only further illustrates the release's importance and Ike Yard's timeless mystique."

FLAMING TUNES Flaming Tunes LP
"Flaming Tunes' sole release is perhaps the finest elegy to the '80s home recording ethos that you've never heard. Originally released in 1985 on cassette (with individually hand-colored covers), this self-titled album grew out of the collaboration between childhood friends Gareth Williams and Mary Currie. Williams is best known as a member of English art-rock band This Heat. After leaving the group in the early '80s, he travelled to India where he studied classical Kathakali dance -- an experience that would profoundly shape the music of Flaming Tunes. In an old Victorian house in South London, the duo recorded during the day while Currie's young son attended school and Williams conducted tape treatments at night. They were joined by various guests including This Heat guitarist Charles Bullen as well as long-term collaborators Martin Harrison and Rick Wilson. Using whatever instruments they had on hand (clarinet, piano, bells, etc.), Flaming Tunes create lo-fi melodies around simple arrangements, oblique rhythms and densely layered natural sounds. The results are a mesmeric collage of instrumental daydreams and sideways pop songs, floating into one another in a hazy confluence of late '60s Canterbury psych-folk and early Residents experimentation. All of these beguiling elements converge in a personal manner, quietly insistent in listeners' ears like the blood pulsing in one's veins on a warm summer day."

SPIRITWOOD Spiritwood LP
"Private pressing from 1979, first released on the Tanrydoon label out of New Berlin, Pa. Original sealed copies, which contain a lyric insert. "Hippie-flavored rural folk form this duo, who write good songs and deliver tight male-female vocal harmonies. It sounds almost a decade earlier than the release year, and recurring influences from UK folk (like Clearing) contribute further to the sense of displacement. Occasional use of piano and a strong sense of melody have made for some comparisons with Mellow Candle, and it's a testimony to Spiritwood's quality that this doesn't seem too outlandish. There are a few moves towards CSN domains, and late 1960's westcoast in general, which should have been explored more. The guitar arrangements (with banjo on two trad-ish numbers) interplay seamlessly with the strong vocals, and the personal commitment makes up for a certain lack of artistic direction." --Acid Archives *an important note* -- pressed on flimsy vinyl! -- some copies may have dish warp -- but according to all accounts online (Discogs), they still play fine. Also, some copies w/ slightly bumped corners..

SHED Tectonic EP 12"
René Pawlowitz presents himself in many different forms; whether it's as Head High, EQD, Wax, WK7, The Traveller, or more recently as Hoover -- he consistently, and without any fuss or hype -- produces some of the most effective, quality techno you can find on the planet. The Shed alias is usually reserved for his best work. With this in mind, Tectonic announce the amazing EP from Shed, showcasing three distinctive and highly effective techno cuts. "Try" takes a broken-beat techno rhythm for its spine -- reminiscent a little of the 2008/9 dubstep/techno crossover period. Tension is set with dissonant elements pulsing around swooping subs until we are saved by the heroic pads that ease in, building ever upwards to a lush finale. Close your eyes and be transported back to the rave. "Box" is a darker, more percussive affair -- claustrophobic and industrial. 130bpm 4/4 distorted kicks set the stage as frantic drum machine hats and claps crash about heavily reverb'ed ghostly samples. Lastly, you come to "Sweep", a hypnotic bleep-y roller with a bass heavy presence. As the riff loops up and over, drums build and a dissonant synth part creeps in. The not-quite 4/4 kick drives you ever forward with a gentle stumble as rattling hi-hats flair about overhead. Great finish to a great EP.

TEENANGER Good Time LP
"Good Time is Teenanger boiled down to its very essence. A lean and muscular eight-song album that is the sound of a band who simultaneously has everything and nothing to prove. It's what happens when seasoned songwriters flex their chops in an environment that fosters boundless creativity. It is also Teenanger's most fun album. Choruses soar to previously unattained heights, descending to a rhythmically fertile ground to pull earworms that will stick inside listeners' heads for days. If its songs were citizens, they would reside in a diplomatically neutral city-state, melting pots of art rock, pop, dub, post-punk and new wave. The music of Good Time certainly elicits pleasure, but lyrically things are more weighty. The band does not shy away from its commentary on contemporary issues. There are calls to reject societal norms, ruminations on humanity's obsession with technology and warnings about our impact on the environment. Teenanger never gets too earnest, delivering everything with an irreverence that has been there since day one. Good Time captures a pivotal point for Teenanger. The decision was made to take a leap of faith, leaving the confines of their past and moving into a space they could call their own. This allowed the band members to embrace a new way of making music and existing together. They may have almost died in Studio Z, instead they were reborn."

LA'S, THE Breakloose 1985-1986 LP
The mythology that has grown around The La's has made them one of the most enigmatic bands of the last few decades. The story began in a hard-hit Liverpool in 1984, when Mike Badger teamed up with local lad Lee Mavers to write and sing their way out of the rut the city was in. Over the next two years they co-wrote material inspired by their love of "roots" music such as: Bo Diddley, raw 1950s rockabilly, Captain Beefheart, and the punk bands they had both seen in local club Eric's a few years before. Early reviews called them "Surreal Rock 'n' Roll" (Melody Maker) or "Tom Waits could have dreamt up The La's 'Sweet 35'" (NME). These earliest La's recordings that now appear here on limited edition vinyl are raw and spirited, defining a unique, creative time in the band's history and firmly point the way to future success. "Had The La's been able to accommodate Badger and Mavers could world domination have been far away" --MOJO Remastered; new cover art and sleeve notes; sleeve notes include an exclusive interview with co-founder Mike Badger.

LA'S, THE Callin' All 1986-1987 LP
The La's are one of the most enigmatic bands of the last few decades releasing only a handful of singles and one "official" critically acclaimed album (which was disowned by the band itself). Lee Mavers (singer/songwriter) has stated repeatedly, that the closest he came to capturing his perfect vision was with the original recordings -- which now appear here on limited vinyl with an undisputed spirit and freshness that could never be recaptured. With so much mythologizing around the band's early recordings, and their eventual disappearance, Viper present the songs which appeared thirty years ago on the first La's album, only as nature intended -- authentic, endearing, and quite simply magical. Amongst many highlights is the first ever recording of "There She Goes, 'Live'" -- now correctly considered to be a standard. Noel Gallagher famously stated that: "Oasis wanted to finish off what the La's had started" It's fair to say it's right here where Brit pop started. Remastered; new cover art and sleeve notes; sleeve notes include an exclusive interview with La's guitarist Paul Hemmings.

SAKAMOTO, RYUICHI Hidari Ude No Yume (Deluxe Double LP Version) 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Includes the album's full instrumental version. Wewantsounds present the reissue of Ryuichi Sakamoto's third solo album Hidari Ude No Yume (Left Handed Dream), originally released in 1981 on the Alfa label. Save for a small-scale Dutch vinyl release in 1981, it is the first time the album's original Japanese edition is released outside of Japan (the European release on Epic Records included significantly different tracks and mixes). Hidari Ude No Yume was recorded at the legendary Alfa Studio "A" in Tokyo during the Summer of 1981. it came after B-2 Unit in 1980 and his debut album Thousand Knives Of... in 1978 (WWSCD 024CD/WWSLP 024LP), the very year Sakamoto was invited by Haruomi Hosono to join Yellow Magic Orchestra alongside Yukihiro Takahashi. In 1981, Sakamoto decided to record an album rooted in pop, following the more experimental B-2 Unit and his landmark electro debut. Sakamoto invited British producer Robin Scott to co-produce. They entered the Alfa studio in July 1981 with his fellow YMO musicians Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, keyboard programmer extraordinaire Hideki Matsutake who'd been on Sakamoto's first two albums and became YMO's unofficial fourth member, violinist Kaoru Sato, saxophonist Satoshi Nakamura, and American guitarist Adrian Belew (David Bowie, The Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club). Together, they created a fascinating mix of pop, ambient and electronic music with elements of avant-garde and traditional Japanese music, the whole firmly rooted in a solid groove. From the funk of "Relâché" to the new wave feel of "Venezia" and the ambient minimalism of "Slat Dance," the album is remarkably consistent while displaying a wealth of global influences. The album was released in Japan in 1981 and Epic Records picked it up for Europe a year later but decided to release it in a significantly altered version. The sequencing was completely reshuffled and two tracks, "Saru No Ie" and "Living In The Dark" were completely dropped while three others, "Relâché", "Tell 'em To Me", "Venezia" were heavily remodeled with English lyrics and different names. Last but not least, a new English-sung track, "The Arrangement," was added, making the album nine tracks instead of ten for the Japanese edition. Newly remastered from the original tapes by renowned engineer Bernie Grundman. Comes with original artwork featuring cover shot by famous photographer Masayoshi Sukita. PICCIONI, PIERO Il Diavolo LP
Winner of the Goldener Bär at the 1963 Berlin Film Festival, Il Diavolo is the third feature film by director Gian Luigi Polidoro, an Italian film irregular who has signed only a handful of films poised between comedy and eroticism between the '60s and '80s. Written by Rodolfo Sonego and interpreted by an Alberto Sordi in a state of grace, Il Diavolo takes up a theme already addressed by Polidoro and Sonego in Le Svedesi of 1960, that is the Italic myth of the Swedish woman and trips to Scandinavia of our unlikely and provincial Latin lovers. A notable success at home and abroad, the film was renamed To Bed ... or Not To Bed for the American market and won Alberto Sordi a Golden Globe for best comedy actor in 1964. The soundtrack written by maestro Piero Piccioni alternates orchestral songs with a romantic flavor, swing era jazz and lounge sketches with a samba twist. Reissued for the first time on vinyl since its release in 1963, the album represents a perfect compendium of Piccioni's style of the early '60s and one of the first peaks of the collaboration with Sordi and Sonego, an artistic and human partnership built to last.
