VA We Shall All Be Reunited: Revisiting The Bristol Sessions, 1927-1928 CD
"We Shall All Be Reunited showcases on a mid-price single-CD 26 memorable and varied recordings from the late 1920s Bristol sessions by a range of Appalachian musicians. The recordings were painstakingly remastered in 2020 by sound engineer Marcus Heumann. The album features an evocative 44-page insert booklet designed by Bear Family art director Mychael Gerstenberger. New liner notes written by Ted Olson in which the 1927 sessions are reassessed based on recent scholarly research and discussion. The liner notes explore 'the rest of the story' -- the related cultural occurrences all-too-often ignored or marginalized. This CD continues the series of Bear Family's mid-priced releases exploring East Tennessee's influential 1920s-era location recording sessions. Follow-up album to the Independent Music Award-winning 2019 single-CD Tell It To Me: Revisiting The Johnson City Sessions, 1928-1929 (BCD17591). We Shall All Be Reunited: Revisiting The Bristol Sessions, 1927-1928 casts new light on an old story -- that of the 1927 Bristol sessions. Conducted by Victor Records A&R producer Ralph Peer, this seminal event from the early years of commercial recording in the 1920s was nicknamed 'the Big Bang of Country Music,' while the city in which the event occurred -- Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia -- was officially dubbed 'the Birthplace of Country Music.' Featuring 15 key recordings made in Bristol during late July and early August 1927 -- including first-ever recordings by the now-legendary Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers as well as recordings by several important early country musicians, including Ernest Stoneman, Henry Whitter, Blind Alfred Reed, and others -- We Shall All Be Reunited revisits and reinterprets that 1927 event. To provide a holistic portrayal of Peer's recording work in Bristol, this album includes 11 stand-out selections -- including several classic recordings of old-time and gospel music by such musicians as Uncle Eck Dunford."

BORIS NO LP
"In response to requests from roaring sound fans around the world, Boris, who previously released their latest album NO on Bandcamp on July 3, 2020, will be releasing the vinyl and CD versions simultaneously on Blood Sucker! From 2019 to February 2020, a total of 12 weeks of North America, Europe and Japan tour ''L?VE'' & ''EV?L'' Tour> was conducted. Since then, the album NO has been produced at the same time as the world plunged into chaos. At a time when all cultures were forced to refrain from playing music due to the influence of COVID-19, they took the action of purifying and sublimating the negative emotions of many people with extreme music. It was a journey that reaffirmed the path they had taken. The main focus is on the 1980s-90s hardcore punk reimagining of Boris's style, which is evident in the second fast number 'Anti-Gone', the ninth track Fundamental Error (GUDON-/80~ I think this is a cover of a band that represented Hiroshima hardcore in the '90s. The recording was done by Outo, who represents Osaka hardcore in the '80s and '90s, and Katsumi (now Solmania), who used to play guitar in City Indian, as a guest. They have been directly influenced by the culture of hardcore and other cultures, and the core of this album is based on the 'tradition of non-blood', and the 'healing sound of roaring', which is something that cannot be found in extreme healing music. Completed. This record is limited to 700 copies worldwide and their vinyl is always a contender!"

DAMAGED BUG Bug On Yonkers LP
2020 colored vinyl repress (half swirl/half blue/magenta). "I first heard Michael Yonkers via the Microminature Love reissue (Sub Pop) and was immediately hooked. I started collecting any piece of his legend that I could... some true, some likely not. He had hand-built all of his gear. He had broken his back. He was part of experimental surgery that left him in lifelong pain. He was a dancer. He was still kicking around making some of the oddest and most contrary-to-contemporary-popular-norms type of music. (A man after my own heart) And then I heard Goodby Sunball, recorded and released in 1974, the year I was born. I had and have a very deep connection with this set of songs. I wasn't sure why, but when I finally met Michael, I understood. He was kind and seemingly a pretty regular guy. But he was also a weirdo. A rare bird, waving the true freak music flag, and it didn't matter what kind of music he made, I loved it all. So, this record was recorded as a way to reboot and reconnect with some songs that have heavily inspired me over the years. It was hard to pick from his vast catalog, so I just sort of jumped in, with Tom Dolas, Nick Murray, and Brigid Dawson as my band (along with a bevy of others along the way) and these are the tunes that stuck to the wall. I will forever be grateful to Mr Yonkers for bringing me a little joy with his music and inspiring weirdos everywhere." --John Dwyer, Feb 2020

VAN ZANDT, TOWNES Somebody Had To Write It LP
"An essential time capsule of Townes Van Zandt acoustic performances. A re-imagined collection available on vinyl for the first time in the USA. Includes classic Townes Van Zandt songs, 'If I Needed You', 'Pancho & Lefty', 'Waiting Round To Die', and 'I'll Be Here in The Morning', (duet with Barb Donovan). Include digital download containing bonus interview tracks with KUT's Larry Monroe. From the liner notes by Harold Eggers Jr.: 'These recordings are as close to the bone of Townes as you can get. They give the listener a very unique and detailed insight into and overview of his songwriting, music, and life as no other. Townes often made light of the dark, living in the shadows more than not. This album and Townes spoken words (bonus tracks) are significant because Townes personally chose each track, and in his own words revealed the private person and singer/songwriter/artist he was. These recordings and spoken words were very important to Townes for the world to hear his music and life story as he lived it, as told from the man himself.'"

SUN RA AND HIS ASTRO INFINITY ARKESTRA My Brother The Wind, Vol. I (Expanded Edition) 2LP
2020 restock; Double LP version. "My Brother The Wind, Vol. 1 captures Afrofuturist visionary Sun Ra's initial 1969 encounter with the Moog synthesizer. The album has been meticulously remastered from archival session tapes and includes rare and previously unreleased studio material. Recorded in 1969 and self-released by Sun Ra in 1970 on his independent Saturn label, My Brother The Wind is one of several albums that showcase Ra's initial reckonings with the then-recently introduced Moog synthesizer. Although the Astro Infinity Arkestra is credited on the original Saturn LP sleeve, only three sidemen were on the session -- reed players Marshall Allen, John Gilmore, and Danny Davis, with Moog performance pioneer Gershon Kingsley serving as synth programmer and technical consultant. The original 1970 Saturn release featured four tracks, which are included on this remastered edition. Features the complete tracking session of Ra's Moog-centric single 'The Perfect Man,' with three full takes of the title, including two previously unissued versions and the monumental 18-minute 'Space Probe,' an outrageously freewheeling Ra solo work recorded on a Moog (or two) around the same time. The remastered editions include liner notes by Moog historian Brian Kehew. Technical notes are provided by jazz historian Ben Young, who also restored and remastered the album with Joe Lizzi."

HEAVENLY A Bout De Heavenly: The Singles CD
"Heavenly's classic singles on a brand-new compilation album! A potted history of Heavenly... Heavenly debuted with the 7" single 'I Fell in Love Last Night', followed by another 7", 'Our Love Is Heavenly', both released in 1990 on Sarah Records. Heavenly vs. Satan, the group's debut album, came out in 1991. Before releasing the critically acclaimed Le Jardin de Heavenly, Cathy Rogers (keyboard, back-up vocals) joined the band. Her harmony vocals and keyboards became an integral part of the group's sound. Before their next long-player, Heavenly released two non-album 7" singles, 'P.U.N.K. Girl' and 'Atta Girl'. These signaled a growing complexity in Amelia's songwriting, particularly 'Atta Girl', in which Amelia and Cathy sung in rapid-fire trade-off vocals. A broadening (and darkening) of lyrical subject matter was shown in the B-side, 'Hearts and Crosses', which told the story of a date rape, with an upbeat keyboard riff providing an ironic counterpoint. The band's third LP was The Decline and Fall of Heavenly (1994). Here the group were at their most commercial and at their most attuned with the growing Britpop movement. The arrangements expanded even more to include strings and a large amount of percussion, and the dual-vocal trick was used on several tracks. Lyrically, the old romantic view of love was largely banished, but the tunes remained as upbeat and joyful as ever. The group's last album was Operation Heavenly (1996). Arriving in the middle of the Britpop boom, the album contained such fine singles as 'Space Manatee' and 'Trophy Girlfriend'. Despite the closing of Sarah Records and release on Wiiija, the album was still recognisably the Heavenly sound. Shortly before the release of Operation Heavenly, Mathew Fletcher, the band's drummer and Amelia's brother, committed suicide. The remaining members announced that the band name Heavenly was to be retired."

THEE MVPS Science Fiction CD
Restocked. "Thee MVPs are an incredibly focused, close-knit group of friends who have found a sound that is completely their own whilst operating on their own terms. After years of nearly relentless touring that took them to the other side of the world and back, the band has fully articulated that sound with Science Fiction. Recorded themselves and mastered in Chicago with Shellac's Bob Weston, Science Fiction features ten tracks of deceptively infectious riff-driven motoric grooves and beat heavy, high energy blowouts that demand movement. Each delivered with a sardonic smirk, these new tracks demonstrate the veteran quartet's willingness and ability to renew themselves and the kraut/punk/garage/whatever-rock genre within which they operate, and also their ability to expand on a sound that is hook-heavy whilst also remaining challenging and innovative."

KITZ, WREN Early Worm LP
"Having explored a lot of Southern Vermont-based artists over the past decade and a half, it now seems time to cast our gaze northward. From the cold shores of Champlain comes the music of Wren Kitz, a singer and guitarist from Burlington VT. Unlike much of his earlier work, which falls into what might be called a 'progressive/experimental folk bag,' Early Worm documents a harder sound. As Mr. Kitz says, 'It's my rock n roll album.' And he ain't kidding. While some of the tunes were initially developed in a solo setting, their final realization was accomplished by a four-piece band with cellist Lauren Costello, bassist Ross Doree, and drummer Rob Voland. The sound on Early Worm is a natural and louder progression from Wren's most recent album, the NNA cassette, Dancing on Soda Lake. One notable point of departure is Rob's drumming -- more formidably rockoid than his predecessor's. The wailingness-factor of Wren's guitar tone has also been upped by the gift of a new wah-wah pedal. His guitar now has a stuttering rawness that makes for a beautiful contrast with the sweetly flowing vocal melodies, which bear vestiges of Valentine, Vile, and Young. The sound of Early Worm careens around wildly. Parts of the songs are tightly controlled compositions with traces of folkier times, but these often dissolve (eventually) in an acid bath of wonderfully berserk guitar chaos. Trying to reconcile the pieces can make your brain overheat, so don't try. Just sit back and enjoy the rich madness of Early Worm. Its roll is not something you've heard before. Get used to it. Or get burned." --Byron Coley, 2020

GENIUS/GZA Liquid Swords Instrumentals 2LP
Restocked. Limited edition black and white vinyl. "There are many reasons why Wu-Tang Clan rapper GZA's second solo album Liquid Swords is considered one of the greatest hip-hop records of all time. Critics and historians point to GZA's raw, and starkly poetic lyrics which featured references to chess, crime and philosophy, as well as superb guest performances from his Wu-Tang Clan contemporaries. One can't comment on Liquid Swords' brilliance however without touching upon the production, courtesy of Wu-Tang's own mastermind RZA. Behind a hazy and murky backdrop of rare samples and classic boom-bap beats, RZA crafted a bleak atmosphere of urban dystopia for GZA's esoteric rhymes to flourish in, cribbing from a wide panoply of sources ranging from the dusty soul of The Bar-Kays and Ohio Players, the nostalgic jazz of Cannonball Adderley and Willie Mitchell, and even the experimental weirdness of Mothers Of Invention. In a retrospective 5-star AllMusic.com review of Liquid Swords, writer Steve Huey said of RZA's production: ''The Genius' eerie calm is a great match for RZA's atmospheric production, which is tremendously effective in this context; the kung fu dialogue here is among the creepiest he's put on record, and he experiments quite a bit with stranger sounds and more layered tracks.' These instrumentals, peppered with frequent interludes of dialogue from the classic samurai flick Shogun Assassin, became the core of the GZA's acclaimed sophomore LP. The full Liquid Swords instrumentals are now available in a white and black vinyl pressing, a nod to the chessboard art synonymous with the album's cover art. All tracks have been restored, with re-mastered audio from the original source tapes. Available on 2-LP, with the look of a silk-screened jacket we are excited to bring to you these Liquid Swords Instrumentals."

CHAPPELL & BUCKWILD, RASHEED Sinners And Saints CD
"On their ambitious collaboration, New York rap heavyweights Rasheed Chappell & Buckwild have perfectly captured the stress and tension, but also faint sense of the hope, of what it means to be a sinner or a saint. In just 11 tracks, Sinners & Saints plays like an audio documentary series filled with expertly crafted beats and rhymes. When the two sat down to work together, Rasheed says that they only knew that they 'wanted to address the now, the past, and the potential future.' And upon receiving the first batch of beats from Buck -- the D.I.T.C. producer with decades of acclaimed work to his name -- the NY emcee used a majority of them and knew immediately what they were doing. 'My goal was simple: don't try to recreate anything they have done, just create something that no one else can do, which is to be me,' Rasheed says. Buck echoed that sentiment when he talked about the record in a documentary, in which he expressed his excitement to work with not just a talented rapper, but a skilled artist. 'Being an artist is just as important as putting two words together to rhyme,' Buck explained. That high level of artistry, from everyone involved, is what makes Sinners & Saints so impactful. Not just anyone could pull off a track as stirring as 'The Blue Hood,' in which Rasheed plays the role of a racist, corrupt police officer over Buck's harrowing production. The same goes for 'Rock Bottom' where he and Ransom sound off about life's low points, and 'Bredren,' a speaker-knocking middle-finger in musical form featuring Planet Asia. There's just so much to love about what these two have created with Sinners & Saints, a project that sounds like if 2020 was a hip-hop album. And if things do truly get better as we move into 2021, there's no better anthem than 'Black Owned,' a powerful anthem for Rasheed, Buck, and everyone listening."

IGGY AND THE STOOGES Metallic K.O. LP
"Iggy and the Stooges Metallic K.O., the original 1976 album -- the notorious 'Last Ever Iggy & the Stooges Show'! Metallic K.O. is the remarkable album of Iggy & The Stooges confrontational 'last ever gig' (until their reunion almost 30 years later). Effectively the fourth Stooges album with then brand new and unheard songs, it was released in 1976 three years after Raw Power while Iggy was in limbo. Soon after the gig Iggy checked into a mental hospital. The sound of kamikaze Iggy provocatively abusing his audience and then dodging eggs and bottles thrown by a biker gang enhanced Iggy's reputation in the embryonic punk scene as the Punk Godfather. Nothing like it had been heard before. It became a must-have album in the energing punk scene and out-sold the first three Stooges album. It is now re-issued on vinyl with the original LP track list -- previously it had been extended to a double-CD with the complete 1973 & 1974 shows it was taken from. In the 2007 CD re-mastering, an original tape-speed error was discovered and corrected - so now for the first time on vinyl the album can be heard at the correct pitch. The album contains Iggy Pop's story of the events surrounding the gigs as well as contemporaneous reports from Nick Kent, Giovanni Dadomo and Lester Bangs. An essential album in Iggy's history. Nick Kent said: 'I'm convinced that side two is a masterpiece' and Lester Bangs said: 'It's the only rock album I know where you can actually hear hurled beer bottles breaking against guitar strings'."

CENTAZZO & ELISABETH HARNIK, ANDREA Duophonic Landscape CD
"Elisabeth Harnik, an Austrian based pianist and composer has created a multi-faceted body of work by blurring genre boundaries through various collaborations in the field of improvised music, interdisciplinary projects and contemporary compositional works. She studied classical piano and later -- with Beat Furrer -- composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Graz. As an improviser she works within an electro-acoustic inspired sound-world, using specific preparations and extended techniques while pushing the limitations of the piano. Amongst others she has collaborated with Frank Gratkowski, Dave Rempis & Michael Zerang, Joelle Leandre and Ken Vandermark. Andrea Centazzo is an Italian-born American composer, percussionist, multimedia artist and record label founder. In the 1970s he played percussion in avant-garde jazz with John Zorn, Steve Lacy, and Don Cherry and became 'a leading figure in the European avant-garde'. Centazzo has recorded over 60 LPs and CDs, and has composed 350 musical works of diverse types, in addition to writing eight musicology books. He founded the Ictus label with his wife Carla Luigi in 1976. The music for Duophonic Landscape was recorded in a winery in Gorizia, Italy, in 2019. 'The improvisations on this recording radiate with life and provide an expansive look into the deeper reaches of our minds. Each one completely engaged me, spurring my imagination in so many ways, taking me to new places that created landscapes with some vivid and unusual scenery. It was a fun listen by two master improvisers and the perfect antidote to another day in the confines of the Corona-Virus Blues. The power of improvisation. Its where it's at my friends', says musician friend Steve Swell about the recordings on this album."

COXHILL & FRED FRITH, LOL French Gigs CD
"George Lowen Coxhill, generally known as Lol Coxhill, was an English free improvising saxophonist and raconteur. He played the soprano or sopranino saxophone. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was a member of Canterbury scene bands Carol Grimes and Delivery and then Kevin Ayers and the Whole World. He became known for his solo playing and for work in duets with pianist Steve Miller and guitarist G. F. Fitzgerald. Coxhill collaborated with other musicians including Mike Oldfield, Morgan Fisher, Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath and its musical descendant The Dedication Orchestra, Django Bates, The Damned, Derek Bailey and many others. Jeremy Webster 'Fred' Frith is an English multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improvisor. Probably best known for his guitar work, Frith first came to attention as one of the founding members of the English avant-rock group Henry Cow. He was also a member of the groups Art Bears, Massacre, and Skeleton Crew. He has collaborated with a number of prominent musicians, including Robert Wyatt, Derek Bailey, The Residents, John Zorn, Brian Eno, Mike Patton, Lars Hollmer, Bill Laswell, Iva Bittová and Jad Fair. The duets between Coxhill and Frith were recorded from the late '70s to the early '90s. They were originally released on AAA in 1983 on LP and on Ayaa Records in France in 1991 on CD. This re-issue was re-mastered by Myles Boison and features previously unreleased music recorded in 1999, the last time Coxhill and Frith performed together."

This is an album put together by students of jazz in its myriad and historic forms who are also proponents of jazz's future. The resulting recording reflects a lifetime of record collecting, musical study, woodshedding, and a reverential respect for one another's craft. Musically, Madlib's label says: 'we would call the project spiritual jazz, but jazz great Phil Ranelin told us to call it black classical music, so that's what we're going with. This is an album put together by students of jazz in its myriad and historic forms who are also proponents of jazz's future. The resulting recording reflects a lifetime of record collecting, musical study, woodshedding, and a reverential respect for one another's craft. Regardless of categorization, this is an exciting and all-new entry in Madlib's Yesterday's New Quintet canon of difficult to categorize music. Pardon My French debuts on RSD Black Friday."

LITTLE BARRIE & MALCOLM CATTO Quatermass Seven CD
"Quatermass Seven, the meeting of minds between guitarist Barrie Cadogan, bassist Lewis Wharton and drummer Malcolm Catto represents a re-birth of sorts for Little Barrie, with these their first recordings since 2017's Death Express and the untimely passing of their gifted drummer and friend Virgil Howe. As Lewis explains, the sessions played a part in the healing process, a way to re-connect through music without any intentions to necessarily come away with a finished record. 'It was good to get in the studio again after such a long break especially as we didn't go in with any agenda or expectations,' he explains. 'There was no preconceptions that we would make a new Little Barrie record, it was just an opportunity to work on some things Barrie had written for fun with zero pressure.' With most tracks recorded live with minimal overdubs, and produced by Malcolm at his Quatermass studios, The Heliocentrics' main man brings new flavor to the band's rhythm section by blending his power behind the drum kit and his expansive skills behind the mixing desk to take Little Barrie's music forward into new territories. Recorded on Catto's treasure trove of analogue gear, and mastered onto ¼" tape, the overall effect is guitar, bass and drums finding a sweet spot where genres collide, delivering a record that takes the influences of the past and pushes them towards somewhere more contemporary. 'I definitely hear in Barrie's songs a lot of common musical ground' explains Malcolm. 'It felt like a great thing to do, work with Malcolm while we're figuring out what we wanna do,' Barrie concludes, 'let's just go in and do some playing and see what happens, and we came out with more than we ever intended.' Quatermass Seven delivers a dark, deep and expansive set of grooves, layered with frazzled and flawless guitar and flowing melodies, as well as pointing toward a future of exciting new musical opportunities. 'Still here, so fine, just a little darker state of mind' sings Cadogan on 'Steel Drum', words which sum up hope in times of uncertainty, whilst unintentionally offering a perfect description of Quartermass Seven."

JOHANSING, KACEY No Better Time LP
LP version. Includes download. Kacey Johansing releases her album No Better Time on Night Bloom Records. The album is an exploration of love and how one accepts it into his/her/their life. It asks how can someone allow love when the past is full of trauma. Can we become someone new and leave behind our former selves? Can place allow us that freedom? How does one find the strength to try again? Across 11 songs, Johansing wrestles to find the answers, her unmistakable vocals always leading the way. Anchored by powerful performances pulled from three days of live tracking with her band all in the same room, the album is bounding and energetic at its core. First takes were prioritized and perfection was rarely the goal. Rather, capturing an emotion and honesty from herself and the players was the rule of the day. The album pulls from Johansing's love of classic pop -- it's her LA record -- the place where she now resides and initially struggled to understand. Joan Didion said, "The future always looks good in the golden land, because no one remembers the past." Kacey saw that and chose to tap into the creative buzz happening all around her -- at small clubs and while dipping in and out of playing in friends' bands, including in between tours as a member of Hand Habits. The resulting No Better Time is the sound of letting go and faithfully falling into step with a new way. There are vibraphones and swooping strings, grand pianos, and doubled acoustic guitars, washes of tape delay and woodwinds -- but it is the songs that continue to set Johansing apart. Here she unveils her strongest set yet. Produced by Johansing and multi-instrumentalist Tim Ramsey (Vetiver, Fruit Bats), engineered by Tyler Karmen (DIIV, Alvvays), and mixed by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Cat Power). Includes contributions from Todd Dahlhoff (Feist, Devendra Banhart), Trevor Beld Jimenez (Parting Lines), and Amir Yaghmai (Julian Casablancas + The Voidz).

AMANAZ Africa 2LP
2020 repress. "Issued in 1975, this is the articulation of Zambia's Zamrock ethos. While other albums -- Rikki Ililonga's Zambia, Witch's Lazy Bones!! -- are competitors, it's hard to best this album as it covers each major quadrant of the Zamrock whole: it came from the mines; its musicians were anti-colonial freedom fighters, it envelops Zambian folk music traditions, and it rocks -- hard. Amanaz were serious, and they made a serious stab at an album. They titled their album Africa, according to original band member Keith Kabwe, 'because of how it was shared and how its inhabitants were butchered and enslaved, its resources stolen... all the atrocities slave drivers committed. ' Thus, their 'Kale,' a blues sung in Nyanja, that traced the continent's arc from slavery to Zambia's independence closes the album. Kabwe and rhythm guitarist John Kanyepa have a winsome softness to their vocals, which sit politely aside the feral growl of drummer Watson Baldwin Lungu, bassist Jerry Mausala and bandleader/lead guitarist Isaac Mpofu. Africa's vibe ranges from anxious ('Amanaz') to escapist ('Easy Street') to straight-up pissed-off. On the 'History of Man,' his voice whiskey-burned, his distorted guitar buzzing like swarming hornets, Mpofu indicts his species. There's a darkness to Africa not found on any other Zamrock records, and a melancholy drifts throughout, specifically on Mpofu's more restrained 'Khala My Friend,' which stands as an effective, bleak situation for the Zambian everyman, the average citizen of a struggling, new nation, who might have had relatives in conflict-torn countries on the horizon, who might have been struggling to find his next meal, who might have seen a bleaker future than his president promised. Then there's the clear Velvet Underground-influence on the nostalgic 'Sunday Morning,' which, as Kabwe recalls, was the first song written for the album, back in 1968, when Velvet Undergound and Nico was a new release -- and the underground funk of 'Making the Scene.' The album also tackles traditional Zambian music and early-'60s rock -- punctuated, of course by Kanyepa's wah-wah and Mpofu's fuzz guitars. But every time Amanaz get too deep, too violent, they come back with an accessible song and woo their listener back to the groove. 'Green Apple' is a civil song, featuring Kanyepa's sighing guitar. It is a perfectly arranged album, from the dichotomy of Mpofu's and Kanyepa's lead and rhythm guitars, to the vocal harmonies, to the rhythm section's sense of space and time, which allows Africa's funk to build. Inexplicably, Africa was given two separate mixes and two separate presses: one version is dry, with the vocals and drums mixed loud, the other slathered in reverb, with the vocals and drums disappearing into the mix, and with the guitar solos mixed much louder. We've presented them both here as they each have their appeal: it's up to the listener to pick the one he or she prefers. This is a highpoint of the Zamrock scene and we hope that this can be seen as its definitive reissue."

TAYLOR, GREGORY Peregrination CD
"Peregrination is the centerpiece of a cycle that began with the release of Retinue (2019) and will find its completion in a final recording yet to come. Where the universe described in Retinue is an expat's new home, Peregrination packs up, throws open the doors sets out on a pilgrimage whose immediate focus is found among the uncounted details discovered along the path of any and every journey. Built of rhythms, timbres, scales, and voices gathered from an imagined archipelago, Peregrination is simultaneously a walk away and towards a music that shifts between tradition and experiment. In the pilgrimage described in these pieces, Gregory Taylor continues his long exploration of the intricacies, voicings, structures, and meanings of Gamelan traditions with an ear steeped in minimalism, and contemporary electonic- and computer-based musics. Across four long form compositions these often lush and occasionally harsh aural excursions shimmer, shiver, and rest; strive, take form, and collapse in a myriad of manifestations both subtle and overt. The journey of Peregrination and its mirrored returning twin to come represent the summa of Taylor's renewed cryptohistorical Javanese traditions."

SHAKEY Shakey 12"
"The latest on Palto Flats is the Shakey debut, a project from Silvia Kastel and Lizzie Davis (Wilted Woman), both who migrated from noise and free improv to the jagged edges of the dance music scene. A syncretic meshing of both artists sensibilities, Shakey encompasses the duo's love of digi-dub, jungle, musique concrete, and the fusing of ambient textures with abstracted rhythms.""The opener, 'Crayscandens,' is meant to chase the squares out of the room. The 140 BPM free-techno assault cycles, variously, through rave stabs, queasy trip-hop dynamics and jaunty piano. The rest of the five-track EP is more inviting. 'Slappy,' which takes its name from a slap-bass sample deep in the track, is sympatico with fellow murk merchants like Cru Servers. 'Dischidia' flips the 'Fairlights, mallets and bamboo' atmosphere of '80s Japan into something modern and thoroughly alien, while 'e ocean''s burbling, melodic house will appeal to fans of RAMZi." --Resident Advisor

WAYFARER A Romance With Violence LP
LP version. "Wayfarer is black metal of the American West. A cavalcade of fury, melancholia, and dust-laden storytelling; the band is informed by the fierce and adventurous spectrums of heavy music, along with the stark Americana of the 'Denver sound' artists that carved the identity of their home. In A Romance With Violence, their most fully realized effort to date, the band presents a searing silver-screen requiem for the myth of the West. This new work sees them at their most intense and triumphant, as well as at their most pensive. Bold, rhythmic and riff-laden, the band's pointed expedition across the frontiers of black and extreme metal are tinged with the grit and genuine air of artists like Sixteen Horsepower and Jay Munly, and the majestic heights of the Ennio Morricone/Sergio Leone collaborations. Through seven harrowing anthems of the high plains, the album paints a poignant exploration of heroes and killers, the setting sun on a romantic era, and the shadow it has cast on the world today. The band, from Colorado's 'Queen City of the Plains', has origins beginning around 2012. Guitarist/vocalist Shane McCarthy formed it with drummer Isaac Faulk (Blood Incantation), bassist/vocalist James Hansen, and original guitarist Tanner Rezabek. They would release 2014's Children Of The Iron Age and 2016's Old Souls via Prosthetic Records, after which they would replace the departed Rezabek with longtime collaborator Joe Strong-Truscelli as full-time guitarist. Partnering with Profound Lore Records in 2017, the band released World's Blood in 2018 on the label, ushering in the current chapter and paving the way for this new release. With the release of A Romance With Violence, Wayfarer fully manifests a sound that is uniquely theirs, and is unlike anything before it. Following its release, they will soon be seen bringing their shattered view of the American West to stages across the world."

HOWLIN RAIN Under The Wheels Vol. 2 LP
"On Under The Wheels Vol. 2, Howlin Rain's trademark rock 'n' roll bombast and intricately woven, extended improv passages swirl into a distinct form of storytelling, expressed through spiraling energy and a near constant flow of form and melody. As a companion to its Vol. 1 predecessor, this latest offering is also drawn from North American coastal tours in 2018 and 2019 that came in support of the band's most recent studio album, The Alligator Bride. Curated by Howlin Rain founder Ethan Miller, it presents favorite song performances selected from different shows along the way. 'The last time I saw Howlin' Rain ignite a stage -- at New York's Brooklyn Bowl in the summer of 2018 -- I could never have imagined the profound silence that surrounds me two years later. In a world without the sustenance and sacrament of live music, my long, loud memories from that night -- Howlin' Rain bringing The Alligator Bride to life in a rush of joy and cascading guitars -- have been big medicine, keeping me sane and psychedelicized. Now there is a record from that tour to prove I wasn't dreaming -- and spread this band's cleansing might until we can all meet again in true, electric communion.' --David Fricke (MOJO/Sirius XM Radio/Rolling Stone)"

TOWNLEY, JOHN The Old Sailor CD
John Townley is associated with various musical projects by different groups of people. For some, he's the driving force behind the double-album by The Family of Apostolic (1968), for others the guitarist of folk-rock garage-heroes The Magicians (1965-66). Yet other folks think of him as the musician/producer behind maritime albums like his own Sailor! (1991) and A Chesapeake Sailor's Companion (2000) or the two albums by The Starboard List (1976-77). But in the end it's always the one and only John Townley -- a man of many talents with an incredible scope of musical abilities and sensibilities. Having studied guitar with Rev. Gary Davis in the early 1960s, John played the blues and folk circuit of coffee houses in New York City, meeting almost everyone you could imagine in that scene. He played in a duo with David Blue, formed an all-electric folk-band in 1965, The Psychedelic Rangers, before joining The Magicians. His next venture was to found the Apostolic Studios, the first 12-track-facility in New York. There he recorded The Family of Apostolic-album and the follow-up with Ocean (1969) as well as various projects for Vanguard Records and other labels. From the 1970's onward John's been researching, playing and producing mainly maritime folk music, making the aforementioned albums and sailing (often literally) around the USA and Europe. Now he's back with this new solo album -- and being the multi-instrumentalist that he is, he played every instrument you can hear on it by himself. The project started in 2014-15 with recordings at Marc Greene's studio in Brookville, NY and it was finished when Grammy-winning engineer John Kilgore did the final mixes in New York City in 2019-20. As John always has been fond of eclectic album concepts (just listen to the albums by the Family of Apostolic and Ocean) this new album also covers a lot of ground. His folk and blues roots are represented by new interpretations and re-inventions of some real classics, on top there are also some wonderful new original songs. Everything is tied together by John's incredible guitar playing -- acoustic and electric -- and his great voice (plus harmony vocals and around ten other instruments). John Townley returns with a folk n' blues-pickin' smasher of an album. Deluxe fold open cover. Includes insert with liner and song notes by John Townley.
