LIVANSKIY, KEDR Liminal Soul CD
Russian producer/musician Kedr Livanskiy returns with her expansive, timeless new record on which she pushes the boundaries of electronic songwriting. Liminal Soul plays like an opera as Livanskiy brings her crystalline voice to the forefront, channeling it into operatic choruses, looping falsetto, and one of her first full songs in English. This conviction is evident in the album's instrumental arrangements as well -- Livanskiy expertly fuses acoustic elements with electronic ones, deconstructing pop songwriting with Björk-like prowess. The haunting vocal loop and house beat on lead single "Stars Light Up" sound almost underwater, distorting our sense of physical space and prompting the listener to "plunge into the night skies." The "Stars Light Up" single is release with an introspective video captured on 8mmfilm in one of the oldest church complexes in Moscow by director Sergey Kostromin. Kedr describes, "White-hipped roof vaults -- antique arches, but with a Slavic tint. This place is very personal to me. I feel the connection of antiquity, with those times when people turned their gaze to the sky in search of answers to their questions, in order to feel some kind of otherworldly energy and strength. 'Look at the sky' is sung in the song, urging people of our time not to lose contact with heaven - not necessarily in a religious sense, but rather a broader metaphysical one." On Liminal Soul she injects her infectious club beats with a dose of the natural, crafting a transcendent collection of deconstructed break pop. Contributions from Flaty and avant-electronic group Synecdoche Montauk on "Your Turn" and "Night" add texture to the album's dancier tracks, while the use of older acoustic instruments on "Storm Dancer" and "Boy" add a sense of timelessness that furthers the otherworldly tone. From the angelic choral opener "Celestial Ether" to the moodier outro "Storm Dancer", the listener enters a state of suspended reality where they are transported to dark cityscapes and verdant rural sprawls, futuristic societies and ancient ones, all in the same stroke. In the end, Livanskiy doesn't propose a single path forward. The point, instead, is to make peace with the fluctuation itself.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE The Brian Jonestown Massacre LP
2021 repress. Clear vinyl; superb deluxe packaging. The Brian Jonestown Massacre burst into 2019 with the release of their 18th full-length album, just seven months after their last one, Something Else (AUK 043CD/LP). The self-titled, nine-track album is released on Anton Newcombe's A Recordings, and it was recorded and produced at Anton's Cobra Studio in Berlin. The album was originally going to be released in September of 2018, but due to a hugely successful global tour -- taking in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe -- the release was delayed. Recorded in early 2018, the album features Sara Neidorf on drums, Heike Marie Radeker (LeVent) on bass, Hakon Adalsteinsson (BJM, Third Sound, Gunman, Holy Ghost) on guitar, and Anton Newcombe on multiple instruments. Also making a guest vocal appearance on "Tombes Oubliées" is Rike Bienert who has sung on previous BJM albums. The band performed songs from the album throughout the European leg of the 2018 tour. Anton Newcombe has been a very busy man over the past few years, having released four critically-acclaimed Brian Jonestown Massacre albums and an EP, one soundtrack album, and two albums with Tess Parks. All releases were fully recorded and produced at Anton's studio. The Brian Jonestown Massacre track "Bon Bon" was used in the 2015 Palm D'Or winner Dheepan. Anton penned the soundtrack for Moon Dogs, a film directed by multi-BAFTA nominated Philip John (Svengali, Downton Abbey, Being Human).

VA Two Tribes Volume Two CD
Not long after the release of Two Tribes Vol. 1 (AR 113CD/LP), Agogo Records realized that the journey had only just begun and lots of stories still had to be told. Motivated by lots of positive responses, the label soon put to work researching and compiling music for what would become Two Tribes Volume Two. Agogo Records put emphasis on expanding to other European regions as well as including different countries than on Vol. 1 and the label also wanted to give it a bit of a different musical twist. The result are 14 tracks covering what the label considers a broad and diverse spectrum but still clinging to our initial idea of building a musical bridge between the continents of Africa and Europe. The immense cultural diversity of both is represented by newcomers alongside more well-known names, both of which have a strong connection to the rich musical traditions of Africa. On board are African artists living in diaspora on equal footing with Europeans that incorporate their high affinity to the African continent into their music. Exciting outer-national collaborations round off the selection for Volume Two. Features tracks by Onipa (Strut Records), Karthala 72, David Nesselhauf (Kryptox Records), Wanubalé vs. Dr. Markuse, Lua Preta, Isilda Viegas, Alai K, Isaac and Octa Push, Guts, Jowee Omicil, The Kutimangoes, Dowdelin, Afrodyssey Orchestra, Rabii Harnoune & V.B. MOVIOLA Broken Rainbows LP
"On the fringe of the indie Rust Belt scene since the 1990s, Moviola has quietly forged a low-key career of high-quality recorded output over twenty-five years, issuing ten (!) records and countless 7-inch singles (including splits with Cobra Verde, Hiss Golden Messenger, Handsome Family and many others). In this artistic continuum, the band has evolved from everything from 4-track fuzz to hi-fi country soul. Today, the band steps forward with Broken Rainbows, its strongest collection of songs to date, written, recorded, and mixed inside the group's HQ in Columbus. Jake Housh started Moviola in 1993 as a student at 'The' Ohio State University as a noisy, fuzzed out lo-fi noisemakers. Over the years, the band has morphed into a unique DIY music and art-making collective with five distinct singers and songwriters, recalling the creatively democratic lineage of The Mekons, The Band, Pink Floyd, many others. Moviola is Jake Housh, Ted Hattemer (Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments), Scotty Tabachnick, Greg Bonnell, and Jerry Dannemiller. Broken Rainbows is a milestone release, showcasing a band newly energized and assured in its artistry, and supportive of its members' songcraft. The eleven-song album hovers over a plot of ground that's optimistic in its despair. Album topics range from the personal to the political, showcasing each member's unique songwriting within an overall cohesive band aesthetic."

GASH COLLECTIVE Gash Trax Vol 1 LP
Gash Trax Vol. 1: Irish fem focused collective, Gash presents a pick-n-mix selection of some of the many varied voices in Irish music at present, blurring the lines between experimental dance and contemporary electronic music. The A side features a deep dive into drums with iced out percs and shape shifting textures from ELLLL. The drum work continues with dance focused, howling rhythms from hard drum icon Syn. These tracks are then juxtaposed with the multi-layered, all engulfing soundscapes of acclaimed composer Irene Buckley. The B side kicks off with overdriven, commanding techno flavors of Caskré, followed by breathy pads, booming subs and precise percussion of Sculptress. Gadget and the Cloud features next, presenting a playful and woozy world with her signature lo-fi, off kilter production style. Last but not least, multimedia composer Anna Murray rounds the records off with immersive, minimalist rumblings of a sly groove in effect.

WESTBROOK, BYRON Mirror Views CD
Ash International presents Mirror Views, a new long-form work from LA-based composer Byron Westbrook. While Westbrook's field recording process has been central for many years to both his composition and installation works, there has yet to be a major release showcasing this aspect of his artistic practice. On Mirror Views, he seamlessly blends cassette field recordings with "faked" synthesizer binaural environments created from noise and unstable tones. The album's four sections and 72 minutes unfold with patience, taking cues from Luc Ferrari and Maryanne Amacher to use the passage of time to create deeply immersive effects. Westbrook also incorporates animated phase relationships between speakers to simulate perspective shifts, blurring what is a documented event vs. electronic fabrication. This is a work of subtlety and sonic precision that is only possible to reproduce on CD and digital formats. Artwork & design by Philip Marshall. Photography by Byron Westbrook.Byron Westbrook is an artist and composer based in Los Angeles, CA. He works with both music performance and installation formats, with a focus on architectural qualities of sound and the potential for audio to generate visual spaces. Westbrook holds an MFA from Bard College, where he studied with Marcus Schmickler, David Behrman and Marina Rosenfeld. He also worked closely with Phill Niblock to produce, record and archive concerts at Experimental Intermedia Foundation in NYC from 2005-2014. His work has been presented by international institutions such as the Walker Art Center, ICA London, Rewire Festival, MaerzMusik Festival and he has recently been visiting faculty with Pratt Institute MFA, Columbia University Sound Arts MFA, and International Center of Photography's New Media Narratives program.

SANGER, LUKE Languid Gongue LP
Balmat's first release comes from Luke Sanger, a Norwich, UK-based artist whose two decades of electronic music-making have encompassed a range of tools and techniques, from MaxMSP to modular synthesis. Along the way he has built an extensive catalog encompassing ambient atmospheres, abstract soundscaping, and more. With Languid Gongue, he puts multiple approaches into play. Experiments in microtonal composition balance out pieces in standard tunings, while esoteric electronic machines merge with familiar acoustic treatments and microphone techniques. The result is a constellation of his signature sounds: freeform new-age fantasia; spring-loaded toytronic arpeggios; quartz-driven braindance clockworks. Drifting between consonant, almost lyrical compositions and shape-shifting textural sketches, the album drifts with the nonchalance of a sky-high cirrus cloud, and it glows as if illuminated from within. When the label heard the material, they knew that it was the perfect choice to launch the label. To Balmat, it sounds like a roadmap for points unknown.Balmat is a new label with a cloudy outline. Jointly shepherded by Philip Sherburne and Albert Salinas, two friends living in Cardedeu, Catalonia, and on the Balearic island of Menorca, Balmat grew out of Lapsus Radio, a weekly show on Spain's Radio 3. Balmat's mission is simple: to foster new ideas, expand upon personal obsessions, and put enveloping sounds out into the world. "Balmat" means "empty" or "void" in Catalan. But quite apart from any negative connotations, the label prefer to think of it in terms of possibility: a space waiting to be filled.

ROEDELIUS Selbstportrait LP
2021 restock. LP version on 180 gram vinyl. This is the third solo album by German keyboardist Hans-Joachim Roedelius, originally released in 1979 on Sky Records. Alongside his ongoing work with Cluster and Harmonia, Roedelius amassed an almost incalculable number of musical notations during his time in the idyllic Weser Uplands. Fleeting sketches, spontaneous improvisations, implied miniatures, rough compositions -- Roedelius recorded virtually every idea he came up with outside the studio sessions on his Revox A77 reel to reel; with the basic intention of capturing his moments of inspiration, he simply let the tape run as he played around on the Farfisa organ. Sound quality was not his prime concern, as he was not as yet entertaining any notion of releasing the results. As Roedelius recalls, costly tape spools were at a premium, so he recorded over older tapes in mono, at a less than ideal speed. Substandard, technically speaking (or listening), but as a self portrait, nothing short of a masterpiece. It would be inappropriate to measure this album by the hi-fidelity yardstick; see it as something closer to an intimate confession, an unguarded communiqué from one person to another. Bordering on naivety and free of conceit, Roedelius introduces us to his world through these chiffonesque études. There may be little variation in the Farfisa sound, but this is soon forgotten when Roedelius invites us to listen, to enter the experience. No expensive technology, no producer, no collaborators. This is unfiltered personality, the real Roedelius. Musically, Selbstportrait is characterized by a combination of ländler, minimalism and harmonic simplicity. The Weser Uplands, where Roedelius recorded his music, are certainly no Arcadia and the village of Forst is anything but Atlantis, but perhaps it could become the Graceland of German electronic music. Printed innersleeve with original liner notes and new notes by Asmus Tietchens.

ROEDELIUS Selbstportrait - Vol. II LP
2021 restock. 180 gram LP version. This is the fourth solo album by German keyboardist Hans-Joachim Roedelius, originally released in 1980 on Sky Records. With Selbstportrait, Roedelius gave unequivocal confirmation that he no longer was treading the hitherto common paths of electronic music. Selbstportrait - Vol. II corroborated the findings: for Roedelius, electronics would no longer be a means of creating abstract, noise-like music in the future, nor of generating utopian, mechanical rhythmic structures. His own utopia was quite a different place, more in keeping with his own personality and view of the world. Hence both self-portraits, in particular Selbstportrait - Vol. II, are programmatic. Uniquely among musicians of the German electronic scene at the time, Roedelius succeeded in blending European and extra-European musical styles quite intuitively, developing his own language of music, neither epigonic nor weighed down by stereotype, as often occurred in the emerging world music genre of the period. There is a fascinating simplicity to the music of Roedelius: his vision does not reside in cloud-cuckoo-land. His utopia is founded in reason, his vision sustained by a simple base: not only did he ignore musical traditions, he also sought to create something new out of them. He succeeded where many of his contemporaries failed, going to ground as they attempted to bridge the postmodern gap. Not Roedelius. Roedelius' music is littered with stumbling blocks. The listener may not necessarily lose his footing, but will not exactly find himself sitting comfortably as he listens. With this album, Roedelius has drawn a clearly delineated picture of himself. Few musicians can say the same, few even harbor such aspirations. Transcending styles, hypes and modernisms, Selbstportrait - Vol. II is electronically-sourced music, yet sounds anything but technical, dismantling the misconception that electronic music has to sound cold and distant. Selbstportrait - Vol. II has never been released completely before. Printed innersleeve with original liner notes and new notes by Asmus Tietchens.

SCHNAUSS & MARK PETERS, ULRICH Destiny Waiving CD
The new album by electronica producer Ulrich Schnauss and the Engineers guitarist Mark Peters Destiny Waiving is released via Bureau B. Hailing from Kiel in North Germany, it's now 20 years since the electronica prodigy Ulrich Schnauss released his debut album. His second, A Strangely Isolated Place cemented his reputation as both a pioneer and an artist who routinely creates inspirational music that is adored by many. As a full-time member of Tangerine Dream since 2014, his lifelong passion for their work inspired a creative resurgence for the band, resulting in their most successful new album for over 30 years, 2017's Quantum Gate. Liverpool born guitarist (and founder of the dream pop outfit Engineers) Mark Peters shared a similar musical path, exploring ambient textures and effect laden songwriting via a series of blissful albums for the band. In 2017 he released his first solo album, Innerland which was enthusiastically received by BBC6 music and later included in Rough Trade's top ten best albums of 2018. Destiny Waiving completes a collaborative trilogy that began with 2011's Underrated Silence (BB 094CD/LP) and followed by 2013's Tomorrow Is Another Day (BB 148CD/LP) (Schnauss also became a full-time member of Engineers at this time). Initial sessions began at Ulrich's East London home studio in early 2017 and final mixes were completed there in late 2020. Despite its extended conception, most tracks were completed during 2017, in part informed by improvisational sets in London, Dublin and St James' Church in Birmingham. Despite these exercises in exploration, Destiny Waiving is perhaps the most focused and concise collection of all three releases. Ranging in tone from precognitive foreboding to soaring optimism, the album delicately hones a particular atmosphere that is unmistakable in their work. While track titles such as "The Supposed Middle Class" acutely display a concern for society at large, compositions and performances reveal a great deal more light and shade. This inherent balance is a key facet of the duo's chemistry, signposted by the titles of "Chiaroscuro" and "Clair-Obscur" and the shifting moods within the tracks. For every rushing, upward sweep ("Hindsight Is 20/20", "Circular Time"), contemplative countering is evident in tracks such as "Words Can Be Dismissed" and "So Far", "The Moment".

SIZDAHKHANI, SAHBA Ganj Cassette
Musician and composer Sahba Sizdahkhani serves as a unique crossroad of East meets West. Influenced heavily by both 1960s spiritual free-jazz and Persian classical music, he channels the fire-energy and longing for connectivity these two stormy histories represent. At age 12, his self-proclaimed "aha moment" occurred while listening to the John Coltrane Quartet for the very first time. As the years passed, however, his ferocious love of jazz and improvisation would open pathways and pointers to his native roots of Persian classical music, and eventually, he would begin formal studies on the Iranian santur with master santur player Faraz Minooei. Sahba has completed two separate Bachelor of Arts degrees: one at Berklee College of Music, in Jazz Performance, and the other at The University of Maryland, in Art History & Archeology. He worked in Paris for several years in textile design but ultimately moved back to NYC to further pursue jazz drumming. He has composed film scores for Chelsea Winstanley (JoJo Rabbit), Whalerock Industries, maverick avant filmmaker Paul Clipson, as well as a live score performance for the Cinema 16 series in the legendary tunnel underneath the Manhattan Bridge. Additionally, Sahba has recently recorded with Michael Morley (Dead C) and currently has running musical collaborations with Derek Monypeny, Rob Magill, and Zachary James Watkins + Ross Peacock. He has shared live bills with a vastly diverse class of artists including Laraaji, C Spencer Yeh, Susan Alcorn, Henry Kaiser, Rova Saxophone Quartet, Sunwatchers, Wizard Apprentice, Talibam!, Plankton Wat, Peter Brötzmann, and Don Dietrich (Barbetomagus). He has performed at The White House, Park Avenue Armory, Kennedy Center for the Arts, Basilica Hudson's 24 Hour Drone Festival, WFMU live performance. Sahba's hazy, atmospheric solo performances with 104-string santour and drums have been described as "a dispatch from antiquity.Ganj, which translates to "treasure" in Farsi, documents the magical first meeting between a musician and a new instrument. It is the first ever raw, unrefined recording of Sahba on solo santur as opposed to drum set. It was recorded in solitude during the Winter Solstice of 2019 without any prior training or study whatsoever on the mystical 102-stringed trapezoid dulcimer. The consequent emphasis due to lack of any technical skill, was pure sonics, overtones, resonances, and an homage to minimalist composers such as Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and early Miles Davis. Days after completing this work, Sahba rushed to seek out formal studies of the Persian Classical Radif with his current teacher, Faraz Minooei.

SAINT ABDULLAH To Live A La West Pt. 2 Cassette
Every new St. Abdullah record is an attempt to present new ideas and To Live A La West is no exception. To Live A La West is simply moving, a collection of profound and spiritual tracks miraculously existing at the impossible intersection of free jazz and electro where mystery and clarity exist together. Neither complicated or complex but profound, St. Abdullah's new work is partially inspired by their love for Jon Hassell's compositions. Cassette comes in a first edition of 100.Saint Abdullah on the release: "This album, like all of our albums, are rooted in our human stories. Personal stories, family stories. This one happens to focus on the chapter that began when we moved to Canada as kids, and left Iran for good. To live in the West doesn't necessarily mean to be Western. That is a choice. As kids, it felt a necessity to be like the western kids. To imitate their culture, choices, way of life. That's what was acceptable, even desirable -- a life lived with less tension was the motto. We were already different enough. It was never our parents who asked this of us. More the environment. There was a moment, after grade 6 graduation that our mother has on film (she has everything on film), where we're begging her to let us go to the dance that took place after the ceremonies. Our father was strictly a no, our mother was on the fence. In the end she won out, and we got to go. It was such a wild feeling, having only been in the west 3 years at that time. So maybe that's what this album is about, an imitation? But who we are imitating, I'm not sure anymore. No one directly, certainly, but a cannon perhaps. Imitate better than they can infiltrate. Faster than they take over our cultures, our lands, our youth, we take over theirs. Still reflecting..."

JANE IN ETHER Spoken / Unspoken CD
"Each member of Jane In Ether is a formidable musician in her own right. The cream of the Berlin improv scene whose extended techniques of their respective instruments are, it's no exaggeration to say, ground breaking. I bore witness to this evolution in discipline as I've been fortunate enough to work with, and see all three perform in a variety of circumstances. When I heard Magda, Biliana, and Miako were forming a trio the news was both exciting and somehow inevitable as they complement one another sonically as they do in life. JIE's music has something of the quality of undiffused light, a clarity made all the more luminous and transparent by a true grounding in silence from which sounds emanate/resonate. Spare sentences where light slips through. Largely quiet conversations in a multiplicity of languages spoken as if sharing the same root. Roots of a tree displayed in a white gallery, in a Japanese garden. water, bells, air, wood, strings. the mechanics of chanting. The origins of the sounds unclear to the uninitiated. the forest speaks for itself, slowed until audible. what was spoken goes un." --David Sylvian Jane In Ether: Miako Klein - recorders; Magda Mayas - piano; Biliana Voutchkova - violin, voice.

VA Bodyclock Vol. 2 LP
Following the release of their debut Bodyclock series in 2020, Singaporean label Darker Than Wax now unveils the second volume of the series, presenting the identity of the label's sprawling worldwide family. The first volume, a natural extension of the label's DNA, illustrated an attack of nocturnal club sounds, rooted in the culture curated by the pioneers of dancefloor music. Bodyclock Vol. 2 sees the new school of producers push the limits of musical self-discovery. Compiled by DTW label co-founder Dean Chew, Bodyclock Vol. 2 sees Darker Than Wax curating a cross-continental offering, highlighting the work of eight producers living around the world -- dipping into the respective scenes of Vancouver, Osaka and Tokyo, Cape Town, Vienna, Karachi, Amsterdam, and beyond. Bodyclock Vol. 2 takes listeners on a globally diverse and greatly vivid dance journey. Opening with Laza's "WTBWH" (the project's first single) -- the record's pace is quickly set, with intense, driving drum patterns and soulful reverberating keys. Throughout the project, acid laced tracks from label alumni Akio Nagase and newcomer Tollcrane meet left-field ethereal movements from B.Visible and Teo Mattress. Joined by RGL's '80s-esque sleazy sonics and UNOS's two-step drums and oscillating basslines. Bodyclock Vol. 2 is closed out by Tiro!'s "Charcuterie" -- which rolls gently through the ether, supplying ice-y keys and calming frequencies. Another essential slice of worldwide dancefloor action from the Darker Than Wax camp. A diverse compilation of deep dance sounds featuring a global array of artists from the likes of Japan, Pakistan, Belgium, Netherlands, and South Africa A celebration of dance culture and its resilience. From the boogie to the deep house to the broken beats, Bodyclock Vol. 2 continues to bring underrated artists to the fore. JEFFERIS, SIMON Vibrations LP
Brixton based polymath Simon Jefferis has been setting mouths ajar with his expertly crafted, atmosphere-heavy beats over the past few years. With his reputation as both a talented instrumentalist, and adaptive producer steadily circulating through the city's hip-hop undercurrents, Jefferis return to rising label DeepMatter with his debut LP Vibrations. With ease, Jefferis demonstrates the breadth of his musical capabilities, turning his hand to guitar, keys, drums, and bass (with a little help from his friends along the way) with incredible results. TRYAD If Only You Believe In Lovin' LP
2021 restock, new lower price. Del Val Records present a reissue of Tryad's If Only You Believe In Lovin', originally released in 1971 as a private press. Ultra-deluxe LP reissue on the newly resurrected Del Val label -- obscure but legendary label previously responsible for early editions by The Brigade, The Bachs, Bent Wind, D.R. Hooker, Fifty Foot Hose, etc. Long overdue and much delayed reissue of this 1971 NYC private press few have heard and less have seen. Comparable to the best UK folk-fusion LPs of the era, this is like a Yankee version of Hunter Muskett's great Every Time You Move (1970) with co-ed vocals plus bass/drums/pedal steel/flute/keys accompaniment and East Coast haunted not West Coast hip, though you'll be reminded of a certain revered private from out there that wouldn't exist for another five years: Relatively Clean Rivers. Comes with a four page lyric insert and the cover is what they were made like fifty years ago."Low key but really cool. Hard to believe it's an NYC piece from '72 from a sonic aspect. There's a kind of innocence to overall heft that puts me in mind of very early Bay Area stuff, like the second We Five LP (1967). That same sort of psych-is-hanging-unnamed-in-the-background vibe. The only thing that really places it in the '70s is that pedal steel which has a definite post-Sneaky-Pete feel. Very cool." --Byron Coley

NOIR, JIM Deep Blue View LP
AM Jazz was the moment we all became truly acquainted with Alan Roberts; the melodic maestro beneath Jim Noir's dandy exterior. No less than 12 months later arrives Deep Blue View -- not so much of a follow-up, as a mini-flipside moving the Jazz from AM to PM, between city and sea. Usually by now, Daveyhulme's own could-be John Barry would have left distractions of success for suburban side-projects and writing with his fellow Mancunian musicians, but AM Jazz left unfinished business -- and, with 50 or so session recordings leaving a litter of sonic debris strewn about the cutting room floor, one major clean-up. Deep Blue View is six brand new tracks crafted from its reconstructed and revived remnants, unfurling like Sinatra's Wee Small Hours to reinforce the strangely beautiful atmosphere of Al's now revered repertoire. Just as AM Jazz was created in the spirit of his earlier working style on debut album Tower of Love, Deep Blue View fuses Al's love of finding the "right" in the odd, weird, back-to-front and everything in between, with the hi-fi meets lo-fi sounds of his crate-digging curiosity and empathy for TV themes and movie soundtracks. Guided by melody, his home-based sorcery of working with analog, tape and field recordings opposed to the lure of studio mechanics allowed his inner subconscious to tap at the door and reveal itself in new musical forms. Setting his inner autopilot to flight mode, "Peppergone" adds to the tracks' nocturnal narrative and appears reborn after a last-minute culling from AM Jazz's initial tracklist. Like a beautifully romantic ode to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, it is a fitting tribute to dearly departed best friend "Batfinks", written in the middle of a tough night. Also revived from AM Jazz's archive is the simmering groove of "Night Talk Late Street" and instrumental "Star Six Seven", whilst "Have Another Cigar" weaves its own semi-autobiographical fairy-tale with lyrics written and sung by long-time pal and former housemate Aidan Smith. Transformed from backing track into a cool morsel of story pop, it recalls the drunken joy of when the pair would make recordings together between singing the Everly Brothers at full volume. "String Beat" meanwhile, soars like a beautiful Bond theme with the shimmer of Lee Hazlewood holidaying in Palm Springs, alongside perhaps, the waltzing string-like synthonies of some long-lost rhythm and blues orchestra of Davyhulme, introduced to him by Super Furry Animals' Cian Ciaran. Clear vinyl.

ROVA SAXOPHONE QUARTET The Circumference of Reason CD
Despite the obvious obstacles, this singular San Francisco Bay Area band is staying on mission, moving forward. Over its four-plus decades the quartet has defined itself by applying an array of improvisational strategies to an ever-expanding body of new music. The Circumference of Reason includes six tracks composed or, in the case of "NC17", designed between 2011 and 2016; then -- in typical ROVA fashion -- the pieces were worked over and performed by the quartet in rehearsals and concerts until perceived to be ready for recording. They include an arrangement of a Glenn Spearman piece as well as a piece dedicated to Glenn; the playing on both inspired by late saxophonist's spirited personality and playing. As well, this recording features two distinctly different versions of "NC17", another in the series of ROVA's structured improvisations, all of which have been culled from an ever-expanding set of visual and aural cues that the quartet has invented, or borrowed and adapted. On its face, "NC17" is simply a limited set of conceptual options to cue in, in any order, to then explore, populating the series of cued events with immersive music/sounds/energies etc. All the while -- as a group -- intending to create a palpable sonic architecture for each new performance of the piece. The takes on this CD are unique; no one take of "NC17" can be exactly the same as any other take of "NC17". "ROVA performances can reach the soaring lyrical intensity of bel canto, the rough-and-tumble tumult of a garage rock band, or the insistently patterned matrix of a minimalist chamber work." So wrote Andrew Gilbert in 2018. The piece from which the CD's title comes, "The Circumference of Reason", is a good example of a minimalist piece when penned by a ROVA composer, in this case Steve Adams. Overall, this album offers an excellent cross-section of the multi-faceted ROVA. Personnel: Bruce Ackley - soprano and tenor saxophones; Steve Adams - alto and sopranino saxophones; Larry Ochs - tenor sax; Jon Raskin - baritone sax. Recorded on 6/22/18, 9/23/18 and 7/1/19 at New Improved Recording by John Finkbeiner. Mixed on 1/16/19, 1/23/19 and 8/2/19 at New Improved Recording by John Finkbeiner and Steve Adams. VALLE, MARCOS Sempre LP
2021 repress. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code. The original Rio beach boy returns in style, with a new record of unabashedly feel-good Brazilian party music. Featuring Azymuth bassist Alex Malheiros, a horn section including Valle's go-to high-trumpeter Jesse Sadoc, and percussion master Armando Marcal, Sempre has all the masterful composition, exceptional musicality, and forward-thinking ideas you'd expect from the Brazilian titan. Updating Marcos Valle's seminal boogie-era sound, Sempre spans ecstatic disco, cosmic samba, and late-night jazz-funk, drawing obvious comparisons to some of Valle's late-seventies and early-eighties output. But lyrically the new album is more closely reminiscent of Valle's progressive early '70s releases. Heralding love, tolerance, and living in the present, while satirizing political corruption, Sempre recalls a time in which Valle, together with his brother Paulo Sergio, was writing subtly subversive lyrics in order to bypass the censorship imposed by the military dictatorship, which ruled over Brazil between 1964 and 1985. The album marries compositional genius with pure pop perfection. From the blistering brass arrangements on up-tempo disco hit "Olha Quem Tá Chegando" and the infinitely classy "Vou Amanhã Saber", to the nine-minute synth heavy instrumental funk stepper "Odisséia", which gradually morphs into an interplanetary samba jam, the songs are tightened and given an extra coat of gloss by London based producer Daniel Maunick. More moments of boogie delight come in the form of "Minha Roma" and the sunshine anthem title-track. Translating as "Ever", Sempre is a testament to the continual drive for development and reinvention that has defined Marcos Valle's astounding six-decade career. Ever changing, ever moving forward, he began as one of the second-wave of early bossa nova composers in the '60s, writing the world famous bossa standard "Summer Samba (So Nice)" for his sophomore album Samba 68. After a brief stint in the States, Valle returned to Brazil, and the early '70s saw the release of four ground-breaking Valle albums. These albums would see Valle work alongside a number of hugely influential Brazilian bands, including Milton Nascimento's backing band Som Imaginaro, the prog-rock band O Terco, and jazz funk legends Azymuth. Returning back to the US in '75, Valle resided in LA, writing music for the likes of Eumir Deodato, Airto Moreira, Chicago, Sarah Vaughn, and Leon Ware, before returning to Brazil once more. Since the mid-nineties, Valle has been experiencing a renaissance with Far Out Recordings. Sempre is his fifth album for the label, following 2010's critically acclaimed Estatica (FARO 153CD).

BOMBA, RICARDO Eu Sei/Flutando 7"
Far Out Recordings presents two previously unreleased tracks of glorious Brazilian sunshine music. Written and recorded in 1978 by pianist, composer, sound engineer, studio owner and former amateur skateboarding champion Ricardo Bomba, "Eu Sei" and "Flutuando" were almost doomed to total obscurity when the master tapes were binned following a ruthless studio clear out. Luckily, Bomba kept a cassette tape copy from which Far Out has remastered the release for 7" vinyl. Throughout a varied career, which included a four year stint as bandleader of Jorge Ben's live show (78-82), Ricardo Bomba had a string of idiosyncratic, underground pop hits throughout the '80s, including "Você Vai Se Lembrar" which recently featured on Soundway's Onda De Amor (Synthesized Brazilian Hits That Never Were 1984-94) compilation, as well as his then award-winning, now obscure solo album Ultralight (1988). With the stunning vocals of Mariana Couto (the first wife of Chicago percussionist Laudir de Oliveira), legendary drummer Peninha who has recorded with the likes of Jorge Ben, Quarteto Em Cy, Lincoln Olivetti, Tony Bizarro and Gal Costa, and Brazilian guitarist Blimba Buarque, "Eu Sei" and "Flutuando" truly are lost gems of the late '70s Rio de Janeiro MPB scene. *Disclaimer!: This release was mastered from cassette tape, so the sound quality may differ from other releases on Far Out Recordings.

We were never able to score a copy of the tape, despite the fact we released Maxine's last LP, Silk (FTR 410LP), so we figured we would perform the public service of making it generally available to the whole wide world. That's just the kind of guys we are! Recorded in stark and simple terms, Home Fi represents Ms. Funke working mostly with just acoustic guitar accompaniment. And it's a classic. Most often, I'm put in mind of the Dandelion era recordings of Britain's Bridget St. John. There's a plainspoken quality to the songs and an equally straight forward approach to the musical bits that may not be indicative of the scope of Maxine's musical art (which has lots of space for odd noises and techniques), but it sounds just gorgeous. Hard to imagine anyone who actually likes music not falling for the sound of Home Fi. But hey, there's a clown born every minute. Not you of course. OLD MILLION EYE The Incandescent Switch LP
"First LP, after several fine cassettes & CDRs, by this psych project helmed by Brian Lucas. Lucas is best known these days for his bass work with Dire Wolves Just Exactly Perfect Sisters Band, but he has a hand in many other California psych outfits. The Wolves have been quiet vis-a-vis new recordings lately, but Old Million Eye has been pretty busy. Often the OME moniker represents solo work, but this time Brian has recruited Dena Goldsmith-Stanley (3 Moons) and Steven R Smith (an old band mate from Mirza) to assist with his journey. And the results are beautiful. The most basic elements of The Incandescent Switch are swirls of kosmiche keyboard, with vocals buried in the clouds, melodic bass lines moving through like slow-motion lightning, and various instrumental events darting hither and yon. The overall feel is something like a collision between a mid '70s album on the German Sky label and a '68 Bay Area acid-flash sensibility. The one track featuring both Goldsmith-Stanley and Smith, 'I Labour Upwards into Futurity,' is especially neat. The dynamic shifts between the three players give it an organic, interactive breath-shape that really makes me want to see them work together in a live setting. But even when he's working alone, handling guitars, percussion and who knows what else, Lucas creates fully inhabited dreamscapes of sound. I, for one, cannot wait to trip while spinning The Incandescent Switch. It seems like a very winning combination." --Byron Coley, 2021

B.U.S. The Unknown Secretary CD
In the beginning, there was chaos... A while later in the Heavens, where angels reigned, there was once held a great symposium, a glorious feast. Everyone was happy and having a great time, until Lucifer, fairest and mightiest of all the angels, brought in suspicious and strange substances, offering them freely with both hands for everyone to take. All were fooled by the Ancient Serpent, starting to misbehave and act in contradiction to the Heavenly Laws. The Almighty God, enraged upon learning about the mutiny, threw everyone down on earth to suffer eternally in hunger, ugliness and desperation. Angelic chants, Demon's screams, witches dancing and woeful mortal suffering are recounted in this album's songs, embellished with mesmerizing hymns and sharp riffs. Chaos is always close and all that remains is the human revolution against the forces of evil. B.U.S.'s The Unknown Secretary comes to further unsettle the turbulent waves of music and burn its own mark in history. Five years after its original release in 2016, Heavy Psych Sounds reissue this retro gem.

MCPHEE, DEAN Witch's Ladder LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; edition of 500. Witch's Ladder is the fourth full-length album from UK guitarist Dean McPhee, whose last LP Four Stones (2018) introduced a kick drum pulse, hypnotic loops and synth-like Ebow lines to his sparsely meditative, echo-laden solo guitar music. On this new album he uses his Telecaster, valve amp and effects to weave an even deeper spell, as fingerpicked melodies soar over hypnotic riffs, looped basslines and cosmic reverb trails. Recorded live with no overdubs and inspired by folklore, mysticism and the landscapes of the North of England, Witch's Ladder represents a significant evolution in his sound, while also retaining the unique sense of depth and space that has drawn comparison with the likes of Loren Connors, Dylan Carlson, and Popul Vuh. The cover art to Witch's Ladder features the stunning 1933 painting "The Primal Wing" by Agnes Pelton, a visionary symbolist who was not widely known during her lifetime but is now being recognized as a pioneer of spiritual abstract art alongside the likes of Hilma Af Klimt and Wassily Kandinsky. Witch's Ladder is the twelfth release on the Hood Faire label, a venture overseen by Sam McLoughlin (Samandtheplants/Tongues of Light), David Chatton Barker (Folklore Tapes), and Dean McPhee.

SAINT ABDULLAH To Live A La West Pt. 1 CD
CD features guest appearances by John Butcher, Aquiles Navarro, and Kol; packaged in a heavy-duty digipack with metallic gold printing.Saint Abdullah on the release: "This album, like all of our albums, are rooted in our human stories.

VA The Blues: A Real Summit Meeting 2LP
Limited restock. "Recorded live on 29 June 1973 at Lincoln Center in NYC, this 'summit meeting' of blues artists was actually part of the Newport Jazz Festival (which during this period had relocated to Manhattan). The event--featuring B.B. King as MC--brought together 'old and new, country and city' for an unforgettable night of top-notch blues. Besides B.B., the big names that night were Muddy Waters and Big Mama Thornton, who pleased the audience by playing sublime versions of some of their best loved numbers, but the concert that night is perhaps most memorable for performances of several lesser-known elder statesmen of the blues, including Delta blues singer and guitarist Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup (playing his 'That's Alright Now Mama', covered famously by Elvis on his 1954 debut single), and bandleader and pioneer of the 'West Coast Blues' style, Lloyd Glenn, who played some stellar blues/honky-tonk piano on his 'Honky Tonk Train'." At this time, Cherry was becoming increasingly interested in Middle Eastern and traditional African and Indian music, having traveled extensively and studied with Indian musician, Vasant Rai. This suite of songs was particularly influenced by the Indian Carnatic singing tradition, as can be heard from the very opening moments of the album. Featuring Carla Bley on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums, as well as an extended horn and string section, Cherry collaborated extensively with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra throughout the early '70s. His Swedish wife, Moki Cherry, plays tambura on "Trans-Love Airways". Clear vinyl.

FRIED E/M Modern World LP
Fortysomething years after it crawled oozing and spitting out of the social turmoil of the mid-70s, punk has mutated in countless ways, sonically, aesthetically, politically, but on Fried E/M's Modern World they drag it back into place as brute expression of ugly feelings crammed into short catchy punk bursts, sneering at conciliatory ideals on peace and love with the same energy as the Clash singing "Hate & War", squealing with the nihilistic urge for oblivion on "Lobotomy" just as the Ramones did. Four decades later, we're all still struggling with ourselves, with society, and still ready to revel in the nihilistic teenage id that splays itself out on these eleven tracks of disaffected snot. Punk as its fundamental core, panicked snaps of self-loathing and anti-social rage blasted out raw and unfiltered, bricks and voids and violence, no second thoughts, no tricky questions, sounding like the point where the initial wave of punk was being ramped up into the inchoate hardcore of Circle Jerks' Group Sex (1980), The Middle Class, or like the Ramones did an entire album of songs like "Warthog". Fried E/M hail from Missouri and are made up of many familiar faces on the Lumpy Family including the Lumpy himself on drums.

LACK Make It Circular EP 12"
Following on from the success of 2020's Inside EP on Livity Sound and previous releases on UK labels Cong Burn and Blank Mind, Manchester's Lack returns to Livity Sound with a brand-new EP of hybridized and dubbed techno cuts. "I wanted to try and create a sense of space or calm within the tracks, even if only subtle. I suppose it was a reflection on the crazy state of the world and needing to find space within myself to stay grounded and get through it." From the deep bass and irresistible skank of "Grapefruit" to the rapid yet ice cool propulsion of "Microshift" and the spacious yet energized rhythms of "Make It Circular" and "Constant", this new record further explores Lack's fractured techno aesthetic, skillfully joining the dots between broken dub techno and vintage dubstep.

ON OUR OWN CLOCK On Our Own Clock LP
Pre-pandemic, there was a plan. The plan was for musicians from South Africa and Senegal to travel to London's influential Total Refreshment Centre to make an album with musical kindred spirits in the UK. Like so many plans, it had to be adapted. During the first wave of COVID-19 lockdowns, groups of heavy-hitting musicians met for a day of intense recording in their home cities then sent the music to their compadres across the oceans. They returned to the studio a month later to respond to the music they'd been sent. The result is On Our Own Clock, a sonic testament to trenchant and collaborative creativity which digs into layers of South African jazz, traditional Senegalese instrumental music and London's rich diaspora-informed musicality. Individually these are powerful strands of music. Collectively, they are super-sized. The 14 players are individually stellar and include tuba don Theon Cross; Alabaster dePlume, whose album To Cy & Lee has been a pandemic panacea to so many people (including Bon Iver, who sampled it); top South African players including Siya Makuzeni (SPAZA), Zoe Molelekwa and Asher Gamedze, who appears on Angel Bat Dawid's critically-acclaimed The Oracle and whose debut album, Dialectic Soul, received universal acclaim upon its release in 2020; The Comet Is Coming's Danalogue; Senegal's highly-respected Kora player, Tarang Cissoko as well as Balimaya Project's Yahael Camara Onono. Collectively they've ascended their individual brilliance into an album that is variously warm and layered, full of tuff grooves, and steeped in moments of reflective transcendence.

GERMANNU/VALERIA NOAJ Edits 01 - Mendel & Delfonic 12"
An edit pays tribute to the original by trimming and rearranging the song in a way that it works for today's dancefloor or listening habits. Delfonic and Mendel are two outspoken specialists in this and understand the edit craft like no one else. For almost twenty years, Delfonic has been running Oye Records, a record store known far beyond the city limits of Berlin, and therefore knows very well which records and tracks go down best with whom and how. Always on the lookout for that heartfelt connection, Mendel doesn't cater to the fist pumpers, but rather the loving, open-minded and upbeat. His sets are peppered with diverse influences, from Chicago's (ware)house pioneers to Amsterdam's soulful school of DJs. He carefully orchestrates dance floor experiences by selecting tunes based on the emotion they evoke. A steady flow of mixtapes and Mendel's Melodies, his regular show on Red Light Radio, provide a platform for Mendel to share his mellower side, capturing hearts by interweaving soulful classics with silky rarities from all corners of the musical landscape. Notes On A Journey has therefore decided to make use of the services of the two DJs and to take two songs from their own, meanwhile extensive catalog under the magnifying glass, respectively the scalpel. On the one hand there are two new editions of Germannu's "Fale De Mim" and one edit each for "Marcação" and "Pé na Estrada" by Valéria. Four times the very finest in soulful Brazilian pop music as one is now almost used to from Notes On A Journey. "Fale De Mim" by Germannu, by the way, originally appeared in 1984 on the EP Germannu and was released in September 2020 by NOAJ as a lavish reissue. The four-track 7" "Pé na Estrada" by Valéria originally came out in 1983 on the Brazilian label PPA (Paladar Produções Artisticas) and was re-released by NOAJ in November 2020. With NOAJ Edits 01, a first absolute must-have edits package was put together. And as the title suggests, the series will continue in the following months with more highlights from the NOAJ catalog.

MATHLOVSKY Yassssin 2LP
Mathlovsky's Yassssin is a celebration of ten years of his musical journey, reflecting the friendships and relationships during this time period. The cuts on the LP display a wide spectrum of versatility and track the entire cartography of his artistic creativity and collaborative spirit. However, Yassssin as an album is not so much a collection of wild mood swings, as it is a threading of the needle wound through the joining points of Mathlovsky's musical history -- then amplified with the sounds of live drums and electric guitar to make something completely new. Joined for the album by live drummer Gregory Simons, Mathlovsky also employs the vocal talents of Jason & Rhonda, Thibaud Meiresone, Amazumi, Mixmeister Michelle, Mathieu Joyeux, BRENNT, and absolutely shreds on guitar himself on several of the tracks. Speaking toward the number of fellow artists he has invited to play on the record, and the themes on the record, Mathieu elucidates: "The best way to collaborate is to give an artist full artistic freedom to write and record what they want. So I can feel their essence and creativity. I can then mash up it at my will to let it fit into my chosen path. This album is about friendship and relationships in all its forms. How we interact at raves and shows, all being each other's family at that right musical moment, feeling the love of your life supporting you, being disappointed by lifelong friends and even being backstabbed by people you once thought to be family." Created for ravers and moshers alike, Mathlovsky skillfully serves track after track of this unique hybridization -- formulating a upgraded musical experience. The arc of the album goes from pure punk to heavy and danceable to pure funk to the absolutely drowning ending of "Life Is Suffering, And I Suffer Good", illustrating the comparable energies of in-your-face vocals, Distorted 909 kicks, heavy electric guitar, and thundering live drums. For fans of: Converge, Prodigy, Aphex Twin, Neurosis, Pitchshifter.

AKBAYRAM & DOSTLAR, EDIP Nedir Ne Degildir? LP
2021 repress. LP version. Comes with exact reproduction of the original gatefold pop-up sleeve. As Turkey's political factions turned more and more violent in the late 1970s, Buscemi-eyed Edip Akbayram was nearly beaten up by rioting audiences for daring to sing about rural points of view that were naturally critical of Istanbul's political leaders. This second album of Anatolian psychedelia, originally released in 1977, showed defiance even in its gatefold art, with a drawing of the band members seeming to grow straight out the ground, covered in plant tendrils. Akbayram poached members of Mogollar and Bari? Manco's Kurtalan Ekspres to get the best fuzz breaks and Hammond slams & put 'em straight in your ears. The band also tried out some mixes that pushed the vocals or a particular instrument way up front, and of course, long, low, reverberant welcomes from Edip's echo-covered voice. Remastered sound, insert/booklet with photos and liner notes by Angela Sawyer of Weirdo Records.

ZWEIKOMMASIEBEN Zweikommasieben #23 MAG
Frequent readers of zweikommasieben will know that the creative processes highlighted in the magazine are an eclectic gathering of influences that result in varied creative practices. But what might be the common denominator connecting all the dots in this plurality? For the new issue, zweikommasieben makes the case for the discursive potential of personal experiences. Once the personal is taken seriously, anecdotes provide major insights into an artist's practice. A portrait on producer Malibu taps into memories of popular culture and traces musical experiences from her childhood to highlight the dedication she brings towards composing melodies and using samples. In their essay, the duo Space Afrika assembles recollections of their daily lives in north-west England to frame their artistic output over the years. Highlighting subjective perspectives also allows for the differentiation of what might appear similar at first. Both the collaboration of Andreas Bülhoff and Marc Matter featured in "Soundtexte" and the interview with Tygapaw refer to the use of poetry. The former condense language to its most basic units and present them as rhythmic building blocks for DJs. Taking a different approach, Tygapaw asked a poet to be the narrator of their album, expanding the tracks by embedding an additional layer of meaning. zweikommasieben #23 includes: interviews with Bass Clef, Crystalmess, Flora Yin-Wong, Grand River, Ikonika, Jabu & Daniela Dyson, Meemo Comma, and Tygapaw. 160 pages, 170x240mm -- all content in EN, parts in DE, FR, NL, and IT.

DROZD, MAGDA 18 Floors LP
Magda Drozd is deeply concerned with listening in her artistic practice. Her second album, 18 Floors, Drozd focused on the apartment building she called home for several years, compiling a corpus of field recordings in and of the building, which she approached as a living organism rather than static material. The result challenges current assumptions about living together in urban settings. The field recordings were woven into eleven speculative tracks consisting of sounds including violins, guitars, synthesizers, drum machines, and Drozd's voice. The music moves between sound art, ambient, indie rock, and R&B. 18 Floors presciently emphasizes the importance of the home, which has become glaringly obvious in the age of Corona. Her foresight constitutes her avant-gardism as much as her preference for documenting what might be over what actually is. The result is an album that creates a space for what is transient, uncertain, and unstable. And it creates a space for opportunities, which is needed now more than ever. Liner notes by Salomé Voeglin. White vinyl; edition of 400.

VA Birth Of Funk 1949-1962 2CD
Jacksonville, Florida, 1960. Charles "Hungry" Williams mentors young Clayton Fillyau after he had just joined the James Brown band: "I don't care where you put it on those drums, remember where '1' is and you'll never lose the time." Listen to Hungry on Huey Smith's "Talk To Me Baby" from 1962 and then listen to how Clayton turns it into a relentless breakbeat on James Brown's "I've Got Money". Not everything on here was cut in New Orleans. New York singer Vernon Harrel's "Slick Chick" is held together by an intriguingly syncopated bass line that hints at late '60s Studio One dub. And in case you think any of this was new, listen to Earl Palmer's sixteenth notes, off-backbeat snare accents and double-tempo hi-hats in 1953 on Professor Longhair's "Tipitina". (Serious students dig out Zutty Singleton's drum break on Victoria Spivey's "Funny Feathers" from 1929). Here you are then. 47 funky tracks from the '50s and early '60s.Features Edgar Hayes, Professor Longhair, Chris Powell, Mose Allison, Ahmad Jamal Trio, Bill Doggett, Ernie Freeman, Earl King, Drits & Dravy, Ike & Tina Turner, Jack McDuff, James Brown, Roy Montrell, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Al Robinson, Eddie Bo, The Isley Brothers, Gino Parks, Joe "Guitar" Morris, Prince La La, Stanley Turrentine, Fabulous Playboys, Vernon Harrel, Billy Stewart, Jimmy Pace, Lee Dorsey, Ernie K-Doe, Marvin Gaye, Pistol, Porgy & The Polka Dots, Ray Johnson, Shirley Raymond, Fred Lowery, Spider Johnson, Huey "Piano" Smith, Dolores Johnson, Turquinettes, Bob Bateman, James Booker, Wallace Johnson, Roosevelt Fountain, J. GARRICK, MICHAEL A New Serious Music CD
Pianist Michael Garrick was among the most boldly ambitious British jazz figures of the late-1960s, tirelessly pioneering various new fusions uniting his first love -- straight-ahead jazz -- with Indian music, liturgy and poetry. Featuring two previously unreleased sessions taped in 1967 and 1969, this album charts the course of his music from post-bop convention towards an indisputably "English" jazz sound. Containing provocative live versions of several well-known Garrick compositions and an all-star cast, it truly captures the era in which UK jazz began to loosen its collar and let down its hair.

30/70 Tastes Like Freedom: Remixed (Magenta Vinyl) LP
LP version. Magenta vinyl. 30/70 and Rhythm Section team up once more to deliver their most ambitious remix package to date. Call outs to friends and family of the label and collective offered up a selection of some of the most exciting electronic music producers in the scene and the fruits of the collaboration have arrived. The remix package continues 30/70's practice of rebirthing their music in a contemporary club sound but this time takes that intention a step further, veering into unexpected and more experimental territory for the band, calling in a new era for their musical endeavors. The record opens with a duo that need no introduction, label legends Chaos In The CBD work their magic on "Tastes Like Freedom", playing on Josh Kelly's drawn out noir-esque sax notes and Allysha's whispering tones to create a sultry and sophisticated house number in their typically infectious style. Next up, Utrecht native Carista enters with the sound of the Netherlands for a new wave electro trip fresh off her BBC Radio 1 residency. Tornado Wallace takes you straight to a hot pink sunset on the long-lost festival floor with his "Red Face Remix" of "Tastes Like Freedom". Closing out are the cerebral and ethereal sounds of Yu Su's "Midnight Blossom" Remix, where the Kaifeng-born composer, DJ and sound artist continues her exploration of "fourth world" ambience and left-field dance music. Over the last few years, 30/70 have become something of a supergroup: with Allysha Joy, Ziggy Zeitgeist, Josh Kelly and Matthew Hayes all soaring as solo artists and band leaders. Individual talents aside, there's nothing quite like the 30/70 collective united as one unstoppable force; and the synergy is palpable in this tantalizing tour-de force.

ORCHESTRA OF CONSTANT DISTRESS Concerns LP
The fourth full length album of Orchestra of Constants Distress, Concerns marks the end of a quadruple suite of intense, dissonant, reluctant improvisation. Looking back on five years of musical summits, which also has resulted in a couple of cassette releases and a live LP from Roadburn Festival, one might wonder if these musicians have come to some form of insight. Riffs seems to have deepened into complete compulsiveness as the rhythm from drummer Anders Bryngelsson (Brainbombs, No Balls) deliver both frustration and caution at the same time. Between the dissonant sounds of Henrik Rylander (Union Carbide Productions, Skull Defekts) and the choleric play style by guitarist Joachim Nordwall (Idealist, Skull Defekts) a way of emotional vacuity is spreading. With the phlegmatic and elemental bass of Henrik Andersson (visual artist) the music of OOCD is a montage of soundscapes rather than the uniform of compositions. Rather than seeking a musical presence through improvisation they seem to perform absence and void. Orchestra of Constant Distress are: Joachim Nordwall (The Skull Defekts, iDEAL Recordings), Anders Bryngelsson (Brainbombs, No Balls), Henrik Rylander (The Skull Defekts, Union Carbide Productions), Henrik Andersson. TOXIC WASTE Belfast LP
Reissue, originally released in 1987. Toxic Waste represent the hardest end of the Crass milieu. While most anarcho-punk bands of the time sang about a war they'd only seen on TV, Toxic Waste were being politically active in Belfast during the troubles. They played militant punk with melody and aggression. Borderline hardcore at times with a clear peace-punk message. Angry, intense and in your face. They were involved in the Warzone Collective and shared stages, experiences and activism with bands such as Stalag 17, Conflict, Asylum, and Antisect. Belfast was originally released in 1987 on vocalist Roy Wallace's Belfast Records and has been out of print for 30 years. It was a compilation of previously released tracks and newly recorded versions of old tracks with Dino and Gary from D.I.R.T doing the female vocal parts and guitars. The 12 tracks on Belfast are nuggets of raging pissed off DIY anarcho punk with hard hitting lyrics and dual vocals. The recordings are raw and passionate and stand the test of time. The band released an iconic split 12" with Stalag 17 on Mortarhate (1985) -- the tracks are included on Belfast and then the following year a split LP called We Will Be Free with Stalag 17 and Asylum before calling it a day and becoming a lost piece of the anarcho punk puzzle. Replica sleeve and fold-out lyric insert.

SNOW, MICHAEL The Last LP: Unique Last Recordings of the Music of Ancient Cultures LP
Restocked, last copies/reduced price. Song Cycle Records present a reissue of Michael Snow's The Last LP: Unique Last Recordings of the Music of Ancient Cultures, originally issued in 1987. The album is an extraordinary collection of tracks "of rare music derived from threatened, obsolete, or now-extinct cultures from around the world" that although the claiming of being field recordings of ancient musical experiences, are in fact pieces played, conceived and recorded by the artist himself. As it was for Musics For Piano, Whistling, Microphone And Tape Recorder (CY 999LP, 2016), with this issue the Canadian artist further developed his conceptual investigation around the object-LP where the single elements (the record, the music, the text and the jacket) are so indissolubly intertwined to create what the artist calls a "sonics-sculpture-text". Partly motivated by the announced obsolescence of the vinyl format, The Last LP is also a critical reflection on the impact of new technologies on the relationship between played and recorded music. Presented with remastered sound from the original tapes and a faithful reproduction of the original artwork. Gatefold sleeve, 180 gram virgin vinyl. Edition of 500.

VA Poesia Sonora LP
Restocked, last copies/reduced price. Song Cycle Records present a reissue of Poesia Sonora, originally released in 1975. Sound poetry emerged in the early years of the post-war avant-garde and pioneered phonetic art forms that explored the relationship between human speech and sound, experimental music and structures of language. Affiliated to concrete poetry, fluxus, minimalism, conceptual and performance art, the first generation of sound poets questioned the meanings of "music" and "poetry" using interferences as source of new phonetic art patterns/compositions. Poesia Sonora represents one of the first international sound poetry compilations. The record came out in 1975 for CBS under the label "Recorthings & Zona Archives", curated and edited by Maurizio Nannucci. The anthology collects pieces by some of the most important pioneers of the sound poetry movement: Bob Cobbing, François Dufrêne, Henri Chopin, Ernst Jandl, Franz Mon, Arthur Pétronio, Arrigo Lora-Totino, Brion Gysin, Bernard Heidsieck, Sten Hanson, Maurizio Nannucci, Paul De Vree. Poesia Sonora is an indispensable reference anthology that sensitizes the ear for extraordinary pieces/compositions of sound and literary experiments. ZINOVIEFF, PETER Electronic Calendar: The EMS Tapes 2CD
Peter Zinovieff is one history's most enigmatic and influential electronic music composers. The EMS Tapes is the first complete retrospective of his earliest experiments in 1965 through to the dissolution of his studio and the bankruptcy of his company, EMS Synthesizers, in 1979. This deluxe two-CD set includes extensive liner notes, exclusive photos, and Zinovieff's own diary entries compiled by Sonic Boom aka Pete Kember. Peter sadly passed away at the age of 88 in 2021. In 1964 Zinovieff sold his wife's wedding tiara to purchase the first computer housed on a private estate and converted his garden shed into the most advanced music studio in the world, housing 384 oscillators, as well as a collection of filters, noise generators, ring modulators, signal analyzers, and amplifiers. The center of the studio was the computer, which ran on on 8k of memory priced at £1/byte (£8000), allowing thousands of musical parameters to be sequenced several thousand times per second. Throughout the 1960s and '70s Zinovieff's studios became a place of pilgrimage for musicians looking to discover previously unheard sounds; Zinovieff's daughter Sofka recalls, "I'd be having tea in the kitchen with my two younger brothers, when people like David Bowie, Paul McCartney, or Pink Floyd would pass by on their way to the studio." Other visitors included Kraftwerk, Klaus Schulze, King Crimson, Alan Sutcliffe, Hans Werner Henze, and Karlheinz Stockhausen, to name but a few. Electronic Calendar begins with "Chronometer '71," composed in the form of a graphical score by Harrison Birtwistle and created from recordings of Big Ben and the Wells Cathedral clock, sequenced by Zinovieff's computer to a pre-determined structure that controlled tape machines in a system resembling an early sampler. The piece was created in the second iteration of Zinovieff's studio, which was also home to the world's first series of narrow filter bands used as a sound analysis system, recording the response of each filter to the applied signal; Zinovieff had created the world's first vocoder. The second CD opens with Zinovieff's interpretation of "Agnus Dei," followed by "ZASP," a collaboration with Alan Sutcliffe. In 1967 "ZASP" won second prize at the IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing) Congress; Iannis Xenakis beat it out for first place. The CD closes with the last piece of music recorded in the EMS studio before it was destroyed by a flood in 1979; aptly titled "Now's the Time to Say Goodbye," it features interview fragments of Zinovieff fading in and out.

Searching for new languages beyond the bitter and nihilist dialect of punk, bands like Gaz Nevada, Litfiba, CCCP, Diaframma, Neon, and many others, began spreading their message all along the Italian peninsula during the early '80s and many of the members of these bands are now some of the best musicians/producers in the Italian independent music panorama (Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, Piero Pelù/Litfiba, Bisca, etc.) 16 tracks by 16 Italian underground bands from 1982-1984: bands who faded into oblivion before ever releasing anything of their own on vinyl. It should, however, be stated that if these sixteen bands had been found on an album, EP or single, they certainly would not have lowered the average quality of albums in that genre -- not even in terms of sound quality, which has actually been improved upon here (considering that the original tapes had been lying around collecting dust for at least a quarter of a century) by careful restoration. VA Beyond The Wall - The Record: New Wave and Post-Punk from East Germany 1983-1990 2LP
Life behind the Berlin Wall, before the fall. Once there was DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik), otherwise known as East Germany. Verging on the ruins of the Second World War, in the fog of the socialist utopia, there was a widespread scene fighting against corporations and restrictions. Die neuen Bands, that was the manifesto, a number of small alternative bands facing the efforts of the post-punk (and even post-industrial) revolution. This was happening right after the English new wave or the Neue Deutsche Welle (the western counterpart). A musical resistance, a counterculture, spreading all over the country the clandestine way. An enduring dangerous strategy that brought to life many artistic figures, way ahead of their time. Such is the case of Frank Bretschneider (Stein Im Brett, Kriminelle Tanzkapelle) still one of the most prolific glitch producers (founder of the influential imprint Raster), Ornament & Verbrechen the east-Berlin combo ran by brothers Ronald and Robert Lippok (To Rococo Rot), and Reinhard Lakomy, a true innovator in the vein of Klaus Schulze. The ghost of an era, a social turmoil that eventually had an impact on our daily routine. Features: Frank Bretschneider, Ornament & Verbrechen, Die Art, Die Vision, Die Vision Komakino, The Real Deal, Rosengarten, The Local Moon, Kriminelle Tanzkapelle, Stein Im Brett, Der Expander Des Fortschritts, Tom Terror Und Das Beil, and Reinhard Lakomy.

HAMDI, BALIGH Modal Instrumental Pop of 1970s Egypt CD
Sublime Frequencies finally unleashes its essential compilation from 1970s Egypt, produced and compiled by Hisham Mayet. Modal instrumental tracks from Baligh Hamdi -- one of the most important Arabic composers of the 20th Century (writing for legends Umm Kalthum, Abdel Halim Hafez, Sabah, Warda, and many others). Features his legendary group the Diamond Orchestra with Omar Khorshid on guitar, Magdi al-Husseini on organ, Samir Sourour on saxophone, and Faruq Salama on accordion. All of these musicians were discovered and recruited by Hamdi to interpret his vision of a modernized, hybrid Arabic music. Under Hamdi's direction, this orchestra charted a new melodic direction and created a new musical language. This compilation is culled from a specific era of Hamdi's long career, a decade where he fully realized an international music which incorporated beat driven Eastern-tinged jazz, theremin draped orchestral noir, tracks that feature searing guitar solos from none other than Omar Khorshid, and a selection of buzzing, sitar driven, Indo-Arabic tracks establishing a meeting of mid-east and eastern psychedelic exotica, and a vision that created some of the hippest music coming out of the Middle East from the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. Includes extensive liner notes by Hisham Mayet with rare photographs. CD version comes in a digipak with 12-page booklet.

SWAMI LATEPLATE Doom Jazz CD
Originally released in 2021, Doom Jazz is reissued by Subsound Records. Using doom -- a slow, foreboding style of heavy metal -- as a template, Swami Lateplate crafts a set of songs that creeps along powerfully. The themes are simple, generally carried by subdued bass lines and ornamented by the piano like salt on a glacier. What jumps out most is Bobby Previte's drumming. Every cymbal vibration and snare snap leaps to the foreground and, with rare exception, decays before the next strike, as much a testament to Previte's assured playing as Jamie Saft's engineering. Regardless of the rock modeling, the disc is likely to satisfy Saft and Previte's audiences; it could appeal to fans of the fringes of metal as well. Entirely produced by Bobby Previte and Jamie Saft. Recorded and mixed by Jamie Saft at Frank Booth, Brooklyn, NY. Mastered by Scott Hull at Scott Hull Mastering, NY. The artwork was designed by Hadi Nasiri. Personel: Bobby Previte - trap drums; Jamie Saft - piano, organ, mellotron, electric bass.

Push For Night is the New York City based duo of Oliver Chapoy and James Elliott. Trafficking in dark, liminal electronics, the duo's sound is an ever-shifting morass of psychoacoustic textures and spectral utterances. Evoking eerie, unnatural, and hidden spaces, this is music that exists in the threshold -- locked in a constant push and pull of thwarted expectations and sublime release, hovering in a trance state of the always in-between. These seven tracks reference dark ambient, post-industrial, electroacoustic, '90s IDM, even fourth world explorations, but the music never truly slides into any definable style. SCHNEIDER & STEFAN GOLDMANN, TOM Strictures, Livres I & II Cassette
The works on this cassette are based on a historic recording of "Structures I" by Pierre Boulez. Tom Schneider cut it into shreds -- samples which he then mapped onto a MIDI keyboard, ready to be played freely while pulverizing any overarching structure. In addition to improvisational reshuffles, acts of sock-puppetry join the resulting collection: The thinking behind other seminal works for piano such as John Cage's "4'33" and Helmut Lachenmann's "Guero" are linked to the audio or parametric content of "Structures". "0.433" takes the original recording's pauses and sequences them into a bumpy stretch of silence. For "Boulero", temporal and tonal properties of one of the underlying works drive the shape of the other. Further pathways open up through MIDI data-extraction, generating new layers, organized into musical units which then can be played on a keyboard: Authentically serialist extensions of the limited parameters available to the pen and paper of the original composer. Stefan Goldmann's remixes of Schneider's work are based on different types of MIDI data-extraction, with the results being routed to FM synthesizer presets. Further historic concepts and techniques are filled with the shreds of "Structures" -- one of Schneider's selective loops is "phased" with two different durations rubbing against each other. The focus however is on spontaneous order and emergent phenomena. Different MIDI-fication methods escalate from solo piano to robotic fusion trio in three steps. "Str_ct_r_s" is driven by multiple layers of the same material, slightly trimmed back into half-coherent shape by broad-brush deletion of MIDI notes. Most extremely, Schneider's "0.433" is restored to Cage's original duration by plain time stretching. The detected MIDI information is thus entirely accidental, with automation conjuring content out of the void. Tom Schneider is a pianist and composer. As a member of the trio KUF, he has released three albums and performed extensively across Europe and East Asia. Sampling is integral to his work, which he applies to band interaction in multiple ways. Stefan Goldmann is a composer and DJ of electronic music. His work offers close re-examinations of the aesthetic and technological foundations of techno, from shifting meters and designing tuning systems to re-imagining the technological fundamentals of storing music. Cassette only in an edition of 100. Illustration: venoztks.

GOLDMANN & .ES, STEFAN At A Moment's Notice CD
At A Moment's Notice compiles three tracks of instantaneously formed music from an artist whose work typically involves carefully sequenced and layered integration rather than real-time spontaneity. After two individual sets performed by improv duo .es and electronic composer Stefan Goldmann at Nomart Gallery of Osaka, Japan, the event's curator invited the three musicians to play together -- an announcement made in front of the audience, without prior notice and with seconds to go... Goldmann met this challenge by loading a set of samples from an earlier release on The Tapeworm, Haven't I Seen You Before, and firing them off through a delay unit while shifting time and pitch settings, creating a three-way conversation with Sara Dotes on piano and percussion and Takayuki Hashimoto on alto saxophone, shakuhachi, guitar and harmonica. "Echoes Of An Era" is a previously unreleased piece based on guitar improvisation channeled by a long-form looping device, originally recorded during the sessions for Haven't I Seen You Before. By contrast, the recording from the Tapeworm label's tenth anniversary at Cafe Oto employs a rich base of prepared layers, whose temporal structure is constructed on the spot and performed without the aid of a premeditated temporal grid. Edition of 300.

GALL, FRANCE 1968 LP
2021 restock. "France Gall was a prolific French vocalist and performer, remembered as one of the central figures of the 1960s yé-yé pop movement. Aligning catchy, spirited rhythms with lighthearted lyrics and drawing from the beat music a la early Beatles and Hollies, the yé-yé artists promoted a sort of new freedom of expression and breaking down of social barriers in post-WWII France. Third Man Records is beyond honored to bring this music to a larger audience by issuing the first authorized North American vinyl pressings of these titles, some of the most brilliant highlights from Gall's catalog. Without a doubt this is the weirdest France Gall record. 1968 dives further into the psychedelia that she was hinting at on Baby Pop. Even with addition of sitars and echoes of The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks and Pet Sounds era Beach Boys all over this record it is still 100% French and could only have been made by France Gall. The addition of English expat producer/arranger, David Whitaker, brought a new and welcome airiness to the mix that was lacking on Gall's earlier recordings. The album contains 2 of Serge Gainsbourg's strangest and most out-there arrangements, 'Nefertiti' and 'Teenie Weenie Boppie' about an LSD trip gone horribly wrong. 1968 is an absolutely essential addition to any record collection."

VON HAUSSWOLFF & CHANDRA SHUKLA, CM Travelogue [Nepal] CD
Travelogue [Nepal] is the first in a series of collected international audio diaries. The premise is quite simple: the two gallivant the globe with field-, EVP- and phone recorders and other devices where they record the essence of everything from the tiniest microcosms of nature on up to the polluted, diesel-fuelled roars of postmodern globalization. What surfaced are soundtracks that act as sonic documentaries of their travels. In September 2019, CM von Hausswolff and Chandra Shukla met in Kathmandu, Nepal, over the course of seven days. Recordings were made at the Bagh Bhairav Temple and Chilancho Stupa (Kirtipur), Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa and Shri Pashupatinath Temple (Kathmandu) and at The World Peace Pagoda, The Shiva Cave, Devi Falls and Phewa Tal Lake (Pokhara). Chandra Shukla is a multi-instrumentalist musician specializing in found sound, synthesis, guitars, tablas and sitar with a heavy dose of processing and effects. His main project XAMBUCA appears to be mostly electronic, yet actually includes varying degrees in the aforementioned pedigree of instrumentation. As a solo artist, his goal is to achieve through listening more and playing less. Carl Michael von Hausswolff is a composer, visual artist and curator that has always hailed from Stockholm, Sweden with recordings dating back to the late 1970s. His main tools are recording devices (camera, tape deck, radar, sonar, EVP machines) used in an ongoing investigation of electricity, frequency, architectural space, and paranormal electronic interference. His range of creative integrity knows no bounds while his lists of works in all areas of art continues to lengthen; whether solo, collaborative, installed, curated, live or recorded. Travelogue (Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Chandra Shukla) is a project with an intended investigation into the present moment: Irrespective of locale, political borders and time elapsing at its slowest whilst documenting happenstance, the accidental and that which is unpredictably serendipitous. Travelogue is truly a sonic travel diary when the handheld recorder was left on where the sun never sets. Limited edition in DVD case.

FENNESZ SAKAMOTO Cendre 2x10"
Issued for the first time on vinyl, this classic album from 2007 was the first full-length pairing of these two maestros, before releasing Flumina in 2013 (TONE 046CD). Ryuichi Sakamoto and Christian Fennesz blend the unstructured and imaginative qualities of improvisation with the satisfying sculpture of composition. Sakamoto's piano, his style reminiscent of Debussy and Satie, perfectly complements Fennesz with his powerful blend of shimmering guitar and passionate electronics. Cendre was recorded between 2004 and 2006, Fennesz would send Sakamoto a guitar or electronic track and Sakamoto would compose his piano piece. Vice versa -- Sakamoto initiating a track with a piano composition and Fennesz responding. Meanwhile they met for live shows, or communicated via digital means to compare notes, swap ideas and develop themes. The cyclical process continued right up until they met up for the final mix in New York City February of 2006. Together they have combined to create 11 tracks of satisfying and challenging possibilities...

DJ STINGRAY Kern Vol. 4 2LP
2021 repress; double LP version. To feel the future is to feel the fall into time. For the fourth instalment in Tresor's Kern mix series, DJ Stingray (Urban Tribe/Drexciya) presents a device for decoding time in all directions, a sonic prism that refracts our senses into auxiliary components of a total future-rush. With a far-reaching selection that has been worked into his own unique form, DJ Stingray wraps the listener's vertigo around a gritty pneumatic bump with high-velocity swing. His mixing style, prepared for hostile engagements as it is, throttles techno into counter-gravity forces. Wading through a specialized cross-section of Detroit's own dancefloor contagions as well as the contaminated feedback signals from across the global aqua plains, the mix can be summed up in just one word: hectic. Raw, caustic, synthetic rhythm-code pumps frenzy itself through a cascading geothermal fog. Never giving away the cryptographic keys, DJ Stingray works you harder than your heart, adapting your biology to a fractal timeline of viscous systems. Discovery, or uncovering, has to do with what already exists actually or virtually; it is therefore certain to happen sooner or later with enough sweat in the club. And as Kern Vol. 4 attests to, DJ Stingray has the access codes and the stealth sense to make a place of a space, and to let it fall into time. Seven more key titles of the covert assault make up this vinyl edition. Double LP version comes in a gatefold sleeve and features: NRSB-11, Dynarec, Professor X, Herva, A-F-X, Gesloten Cirkel, Anna Meredith, LoneLady, and Syncom Data.

2021 repress. Double LP version. Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald -- the two indispensable protagonists of the "Electric Garden" -- plug back into the wilderness. Transport brings together a set of studio-refined sequences aimed at colonizing some of the dark energy that pulsates through those areas that are thoroughly electrified, even if not on the grid. The Detroit-Berlin axis triangulates to a third point that, like the atomic particle that lives in two places at once, flickers between a form of techno-charged ambience and a futuristic club-jazz that cannot be broken down into constitutive parts. Borderland remains caught in a state of enraptured stillness, invisibly moving between every imagined future for electronic sound making. The result: a font from which springs serene and exhilarating musical ideas that vibrate with refined energy for 60 seconds in every minute.

DIXON, TERRENCE From The Far Future Pt. 3 3LP
2021 repress; triple LP version. Tresor Records announces From The Far Future Pt. 3, a new album from Terrence Dixon. Continuing the story of his previous two iterations on this title, it is a serene undertaking of unrivalled Motor City rhythms and sound. It finds the Detroit producer oscillating, from excursions in paradises of synth pointillism to husky storytelling and Dixon's peculiar beat work. A master in letting shapes find their form, Dixon allows the listener to wallow in recurring scenes. "Lost Communication Procedure", "Found In Space", and "Remarkable Wanderer" etch a sound world of choral vibrations and cinematic dirge. Where gaseous clouds scrape the natural sonic pastures of such environments, the hypnotized listener staggers a drunken step, moving sideways by 0 or 1 or -1 into new scenes. Not least an expert in industrial abstraction, a human silhouette permeates Dixon's sound. His ethereal storytelling portrays the heart-rending romance of "Unconditional Love" and unearths in "I'm Away In Detroit" monologuing moodscapes recalling our GPS voice assistants. "Out of Darkness" initially recalls Kraftwerk's "Geiger Counter", as from pure signal data and feedback spells an unceasing locomotive wormhole. Hazy, dense grooves drive across bleak city scenes in "We Can Rebuild Him", into the raw vibe of "Framework" and the rude stabs of "Spectrum of Light". The varying presence of Dixon's work is one of his textural signatures, at arm's length, brushing right within, and far out. The bumping mood of "Earth Station" is one such moment, close enough to isolate the diving bass somewhere within, simultaneously from afar it becomes positively gravitational. The first two records of the series are rightfully considered among the finest embodiments of contemporary minimalism, symbolic documents of Afro-futurism. This new work revives the classic series, continuing the relationship between Tresor and the undisputed master of Detroit techno into the present day. Includes one vinyl-only track.

OTSUKA QUINTET, GEORGE Loving You George LP
LP version. Obi strip. Wewantsounds present a first-time reissue of the cult LP by master Japanese drummer George Otsuka and his quintet, recorded live on July, 19th 1975 at the Nemu Jazz Inn. The album was released by cutting-edge Japanese label Bellwood in 1975. The album Loving You George is comprised of four superb performances fueled by Otsuka powerful drumming and Fumio Karashima's fender Rhodes. Otsuka is one of the giants of the Nippon jazz scene. The drummer, who sadly passed away in 2020, enjoyed a 50-year career recording with the best musicians and labels in Japan. Otsuka joined Sadao Watanabe's Cosy Quartet in the late fifties before switching to Hidehiko Matsumoto's quartet where he gained exposure as one of Japan's premier drummers. In the mid-60s, he formed his own trio with Hideo Ichikawa (piano) and Masaoki Terakawa (bass) recording several highly-acclaimed albums and also playing with international stars such as Hampton Hawes and Roy Haynes. The '70s were a productive decade and Otsuka embraced the latest development in jazz including fusion and modal jazz enthusiastically. The musician signed with Koki Miura's groundbreaking Bellwood Records (responsible for producing Haruomi Hosono and the emergent wave of folk rock artists led by Happy End) and recorded a live album at Nemu Jazz Inn in the Nemu resort, south of Nagoya. The evening was a special one. On top of The George Otsuka quintet (featuring Mitsuaki Furuno, Norio Ohno, Shozo Sasaki, and Fumio Karashima), were the supergroup of Norman Connors, Eddie Henderson, and Gary Bartz who were also recording a live album, Dance Of Magic, that has since become legendary. On the night, Otsuka and his sidemen recorded four tracks including "Little Island" a Karashima original and "Something Everywhere" a faithful rendition of Steve Kuhn Brazilian-flavored original which had just appeared on his ECM album Trance. The second side begins with a breathtaking version of the Coltrane standard "Miles Mode" finishing with a great drum solo by Otsuka followed by a superb version of the Minnie Riperton classic, "Loving You" played in a mid-tempo funky mode with a great Rhodes solo. Loving You George is a vivid testimony that Otsuka and his musicians were at the top of their game. Remastered audio from the master tapes by King Records in Japan.

KAZAR, LIAM Due North LP
"Liam Kazar makes joyful rock songs so irresistible they feel timeless. Just ask Jeff Tweedy. 'I love everything about Liam. His voice, his songs, the way he plays instruments, his smile, his cooking... Everything,' says Tweedy. 'Whenever I hear one of his songs for the first time I almost immediately start thinking to myself, 'oh yeah! This song! I love this song.' It's a magic trick very few people can pull off: making something brand new sound like a cherished memory.' But on Kazar's debut album Due North, out via Woodist and Mare Records, the album's ten tracks are full of so much charm, wit, and heart it can't be a sleight of hand. The Kansas City-based, Chicago-raised musician and acclaimed chef/founder of the Armenian pop-up restaurant Isfahan, describes the making of Due North as a personal revelation, where the more he wrote the more his songs showed what kind of artist he's always wanted to be. While he's consistently been a dream bandmate over the past several years, performing with artists like Tweedy, Steve Gunn, Daniel Johnston, and more, making his own songs presented a chance to finally find his own voice. But figuring out how to step out was a rewarding challenge. 'This record kind of all stemmed from a conversation I had with Jeff,' says Kazar. 'I showed him some of my earliest songs I was working on and he told me, 'It sounds like you're writing for the people in your bands, you're not writing for yourself.' He was completely right. I was not writing songs for myself.' With that needed insight, Kazar decided to start from scratch and write songs that felt like himself. 'These songs totally blew me away the first time I heard them: they sound like David Bowie meets the Band,' says Mare Records co-founder Kevin Morby. Due North was mixed by Sam Evian at his Flying Cloud Recordings Studio in upstate New York. Along with drummer Spencer Tweedy and bassist Lane Beckstrom, Kazar enlists keyboardist Dave Curtin (Woongi), co-producer James Elkington on pedal steel, as well as Ohmme and Andrew Sa on backing vocals."

RUN LOGAN RUN For A Brief Moment We Could Smell The Flowers CD
Run Logan Run's third full length album For A Brief Moment We Could Smell The Flowers finds the acclaimed Bristolian duo pushing their music forwards in a dramatic new direction in the company of producer Riaan Vosloo (Nostalgia 77). Recorded in lockdown after months of intense jamming, the album bolsters the dynamic improvised sound of the group with expansive synth soundscapes that add depth, warmth and emotional heft to the duo's uniquely committed style of spiritualized jazz. "Making music is almost the only thing that makes sense to us" says Andrew Neil Hayes, Run Logan Run's saxophone powerhouse. "It's a transcendent experience, where time stands still and it feels like our place in the universe is just right." It's a succinct summary of the deeply held commitment found at the root of Run Logan Run's uncompromising music. Based in the alchemical fusion of Hayes' extended, pedal-treated saxophone improvisations and Matt Brown's surging, polyrhythmic alt-breakbeats, the Bristol group have picked up the baton passed by the new generation of jazz-continuum UK players, and journeyed with it toward new vistas of inner and outer space. Brown, formerly of Bristol unit Dakhla Brass, replaces Dan Johnson, who featured on Run Logan Run's acclaimed 2018 debut The Delicate Balance of Terror. Over months of improvised sessions during the lockdown, Brown and Hayes established the near telepathic synergy achieved when musicians know just how to lock into each other. The songs on For A Brief Moment emerged from these focused practice sessions: "We're lucky enough to have our own rehearsal studio in a community space called Kuumba, in St Pauls, Bristol," explains Hayes. "We wrote the whole album in the space of three months. The first two months were spent improvising for hours at a time. Occasionally one of us would bring something along that we'd written in our own time as a starting point, but predominantly we'd start from scratch together until we stumbled on a riff or an idea we liked. Then we'd keep pushing and pulling it around until it developed into a track. In this way, the musical conversation that takes place between a duo is very intimate." HIROSE, YUTAKA NOVA + 4 2LP
2021 restock; double LP version. Gatefold sleeve: Includes liner notes in English and Japanese. WRWTFWW Records present an expanded reissue of one of the most fascinating Japanese ambient/environmental albums ever made, NOVA by Yutaka Hirose, originally released in 1986. The expanded reissue includes the album known as Soundscape 2: Nova, sourced from its original masters, as well as four never-released-before recordings over 50 minutes. Initially released in 1986 as part of the Soundscape series. Commissioned by Misawa Home Corporation for use in their prefabricated houses, Yutaka Hirose's NOVA has grown to become a mythical piece of the Japanese minimalist/ambient/environmental scene of the eighties. Initiated around the enchanting landscapes of the two first tracks recorded for the project, "Nova" and "Epilogue", Yutaka Hirose's magnum opus serenely blends vintage synth with nature sounds, exploring soothing palettes and organic backdrops. For "Slow Sky", Hirose explains he "went for a pointillism-like sound, and tried to express a scenery of awakening, where the portal of a heart is opening up", while on "Humming The Sea", he "tried to compose a kind of music that expresses the daily, lazy life of child-like innocence in a summer vacation in some small town." The bonus material gathers four long unreleased pieces created around the same period of time for installations, described by Yutaka Hirose as "not music per se but rather sound sculptures", and including the haunting "Shadow Of A Water Droplet" which was recorded for an Ikebana exhibition. All in all, NOVA + 4 is a transcendent experience of nature in the urban context, an oeuvre which, much like Midori Takada's Through The Looking Glass (WRWTFWW 018LP/WRWTFWW 019CD/LP, 2017) or Satoshi Ashikawa's Still Way (1999), holds the power to appease the soul in turbulent times. As one inspired YouTube commenter once said when describing Yutaka Hirose's masterstroke: "I can't tell if the birds are singing inside or outside! Thank you!" GRAUZONE Raum 12"
2021 restock. WRWTFWW Records is beyond thrilled to announce the first ever vinyl maxi-single release for Raum, Grauzone's best-kept secret and underground mega-gem from 1980. The four-track affair includes the full title track sourced from the original reels. The 12-inch vinyl is cut at 45rpm and comes with a never-seen cover art by band member Stephan Eicher and a handmade Xerox hype sticker. Initially released almost 40 years ago on the beloved compilation Swiss Wave The Album (Off Course Records, 1980) alongside the band's massive hit "Eisbär", "Raum" is the biggest Grauzone track people have yet to discover. An über-infectious New York style bassline played by Christian "GT" Trüssel and frantic drumming by Marco Repetto's blend with Martin Eicher's hauntingly hopeless lyrics and Claudine Chirac's saxophone escapades to personify post-punk heaven and all its wonderful anomalies. It's disco with an edge, pop filled with fear, it's The Cure infused with proto techno and Swiss art chic. Or maybe, it's simply one hell of a song that will make you dance and shout. Further on the A-side, Naum Gabo's rework takes Grauzone to modern dancefloors with a thumping track and bounce-inducing groove on which Liquid Liquid's very own Dennis Young adds magic in the form of marimba, Roto Toms, and EBowed guitar. The energy is electric, the sound is huge, a club banger with extra heart, ready for sound systems of all kinds. The B-side features Ata Macias's fabled extended version of "Raum" (first released in 2010 via Live at Robert Johnson) that Stephan Eicher described as "the perfect Grauzone edit" (and it is!), plus a straight to the point radio edit of Naum Gabo's rework. This release follows WRWTFWW's reissue of Grauzone's Eisbär maxi-single (WRWTFWW 041EP) as part of the 40 years anniversary of the band.

TAKADA, MIDORI Through The Looking Glass CD
2021 restock. Palto Flats and We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's sought after and timeless ambient/minimal album Through The Looking Glass, originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan. Considered a holy grail of Japanese music by many, Through The Looking Glass is Midori Takada's first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience. Midori Takada is a composer, multi-percussionist, and theater artist renowned in Japanese vanguard circles. Midori has released two solo albums: Through The Looking Glass and Tree Of Life (1999) and wrote music for Tadashi Suzuki's theater plays. Her hypnotic, minimalist music is based in the concept of coherence between sound and the human body. She performs solo on marimba and other percussion instruments. She debuted on the scene of Berlin Philharmonic, performing with the RIAS Symphonie-Orchester Berlin just after graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1974. She continued her career with solo concerts in Japan and abroad. In the 1980s, Midori began to explore the traditional music of Asia and Africa. Her fascination resulted in joint projects with Kakraba Lobi from Ghana, Lamine Konte from Senegal, Farafina Band from Burkina Faso, and Korean musicians: zither player Chi Seong-Ja, flute player Won-Il, and saxophone player Kang Tae-Hwan. She also led Mkwaju Ensemble's innovative percussion project and still performs with free-jazz band Ton-Klami with Kang Tae-Hwan and jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh. Takada's compositions have a remarkable way of affecting the imagination. Her minimalist, contemplative music is filled with the concept of infinity and reminds us of a moon voyage, falling stars, a journey into the ocean, or a walk in the garden. The trans melodies, initially simple, begin to loop and splinter, their rhythm breaking and thickening, slowly drawing the listener into another reality. This fully licensed reissue comes with extensive liner notes. CD version is the first ever available CD version; Comes with an eight-page booklet and fold-out poster.
