Sandoz in Dub is Richard H. Kirk.

Overall impression: good. This is RHK's latest (and last?) release for '98 (see also: Trafficante "Is This Now?" and Richard H. Kirk "Knowledge Through Science"), this one under the oft used Sandoz moniker. This time around the Sandoz title is augmented by 'in Dub', and for good reason. Kirk has often used ethnic sounds/samples in his various projects, but this is the first time he's married his well honed, 20+ year mastery of electronics and ambience with Jamaican dub elements. The music is digital dub, Kirk adds dub flavors such as bass, vocal/spoken/horn/guitar samples to his beaty-y electronic mix. Some tracks aren't all that much different from Kirk's standard fare, but several ("King Dread", "Chant to Jah" and "Cockpit Country" especially) are pure digi-dub. Kirk is no Lee Perry, but he is Richard H. Kirk, so the results are intriguing as always. I do prefer Twilight Circus in Dub Sound System's version of electro-dub (see: "Dub Plate Selection"), but this is still very nice material and another welcome change of pace for RHK. Great packaging too, CV-type blurry images of Jamaica and it's people (presumably from the trip that inspired Kirk to make this album). I'll continue to help pay his rent as long he keeps putting out great stuff like this. Real audio sound clips are available at the RHK fan page listed below ...
