Overall impression: ok. Finitribe have been around since the late 70's ... and they've changed quite a bit over the years. Recently, the band has gone completely electronic with it's sound, and this single puts them right out there with a ba-zillion other electronic bands. The original version of "Squelch" is a varying tempo drum 'n bass / dub song with an occasional "world melts down" vocal and "squelch-y" keyboard lines and samples on top of the big bass. The Misjah remix replaces the original varying beat with a repetitive and fairly boring, straightforward uptempo rave-like beat. The Witchman remixes are a bit more interesting, they reconstruct the different parts of the original song and add several samples and more d 'n b fills. The Wreckage Inc. remix slows everything down, adds blasts of noise to the beat and keyboard sweeps, pretty cool. The McDonald remix is much like the fast d 'n b section of the original, adds a "keep steppin' at your own pace" vocal and some female vocals near the end. The original version and the "Black Metal Dub III" are my favorites ... especially the latter, Witchman does an excellent job of extending the song by adding ambient sections to tie together the fast d 'n b parts and the slower, dub-like parts. Overall, an ok single, but I get really tired of the song after 2 or 3 versions that aren't really that much different. Besides, the original is an ok track but nothing really worthy of so many remixes ...
