Live in Glasgow, 2023
NWW's birth is strangely similar to ADN's birth, due to the same period and listening: in 1978 three friends in London, collecting krautrock, progressive and avant-garde music records, formed a group looking for new sounds; free improvisation, krautrock, Throbbing Gristle and industrial music were the main inspiration, but paying heavy debt also to surrealist, dada and futurist artists. The original line-up was Steven Stapleton, John Fothergill and Heeman Pathak, they released the first three albums; the first records showed a list of one hundred experimental and unfamous musicians who left an imprint on them, NWW list became soon a cult among the experimental music listeners. The sound was ranging among The Fugs, Frank Zappa, The Residents, touching noise music through musique concrete. Soon Fothergill left the band, founding Hastings OF Malawi, and NWW became the solo project of Steven Stapleton, who released a dozen of LP's in the '80s, often with contributions by other musicians near his field: Foetus, Diana Rogerson, Jac Berrocal, David Tibet, Christoph Heemann, David Jackman, Robert Haihj, John Balance a.o., but with Andrew Liles and Colin Potter often supporting him.
At the end of that decade, with 'Spiral Insana' and 'Soliloquy For Lilith' NWW drew near ambient and minimal music, inspored by Indian ragas in Terry Riley's way. In the new century Stapleton approached drone and psychedelic music, returning to concerts after twenty years. The latest collaborations have been with Thurston Moore, Jim O'Rourke, Faust, Sunn O))), Earth Monkey; NWW also accompanied with his sound the books issued by the French editor Lekna Lente.
During these 45 years Steven Stapleton has shown to have a deep knowledge of past experimental music and to be very ecelctic in his manipulation of sound.
