The U.K. in the late seventies was a amazingly positive fertile breeding ground for wild liberated kitchen sink experimentation, fuelled by punk, the trend to DIY ethics gave rise to all manner of the strange and wonderful. Art and artless groups and individuals popped up everywhere. Nurse With Wound, either on of the former, depending on yuor persuasion, formed around this geenrative period. Some of our contemporaries made some brave and astounding music, their independently produced records, released in small runs of 300 to 500 and sold from home or via the Rough Trade shop.
L. Voag's 'The Way Out' and Anne Bean and Paul Burwell's "Low Flying Aircraft" come to mind as some of the most unique gems of the time but my favourite has to be Bladderflask's wonderfully titled 'One day I was so sad that the corners of my mouth met and everybody thought I was whistling'. The mad genius behind Bladderflask was the unhinged maverick Richard Rupenus. Richard and I have since collaborated on several projects, Mixed Band Philanthropist - 'The Impossible Humane' and his Masstishaddhu Lp 'Shekina' released on my United Dairies label in the 80's. Since then Richards other alter-ego was/is the New Blockaders, their 'Changez les Blockeurs' was a favourite and some years back I made a cover version.
Anyway back to the 'Backside' project. Richard mentioned he had unearthed some fragments of old vintage Flask material and would I like to do something with them, we did and here we are.
