Overall impression: good. Here is a collaborative effort between JF Coleman (ex-Cop Shoot Cop, Phylr) and Mauro Teho Teardo (Meathead, Matera) and various friends. "Brooklyn Bank" shares many of the same elements that can be found on Phylr's "Contra La Puerta" (and to a lesser extent, Matera's "Same Here"): beat, loop and groove programming, piano, sound samples, top-notch production and ambient atmospheres. Layered on top of the Teardo/Coleman foundation are an assortment of wind and stringed instruments, live bass, guitar and drums that add an extra organic lushness to the sound. Finally, on top of that is Teho's part-whispered, part-grunted brooding vocals on all but a few tracks, Lydia Lunch's spoken bile on 3 tracks and Carolyn Coleman's (JF's wife?) cool melodic backing vocals on 3 tracks. The majority of the songs are slow to mid-tempo head nodders but a few ("Hacke", "No Truck", "A Bit of Red", "Missin'") are faster paced and/or more hectic. Despite all the talent and instrumentation involved, about 1/2 of "Brooklyn Bank" fails to impress me much ... there are bits and pieces of vocals and music that are neat, but overall the songs either don't gel or just aren't as interesting as they could be. The other half though (in particular: "Cello", "Turco", "Apart", "Coatless", "Scava" and "Pain"), is great ... so, I'm still pleased with the disc. I was expecting a little more from this one than I got, hopefully the other tracks will eventually
