BRAIN IN A QUANDRY
I knew it was too good to last. Well, some of the services here at Brainwashed might soon be coming to an end. The site now has about 900 Meg of space used and a buttload of traffic, and we may have to start paying hefty for it. Unfortunately to keep it running for a discount price wasn't working out much because we have been using a bit too much space and tranferring too much data. At 900 Meg, we might have to start paying the price of $25per month per 10 meg. Do the math. Jon Whitney can't afford to pay 90 x $25 per month out of his pocket. What this means is that some things may have to happen like this:
  1. We may have to start selling advertising.
  2. We might have to remove all sound files, samples, videos, etc.
  3. We might have to go beyond the call of duty in bringing more customers to Global Media. They do have a great service and excellent rates, but the less people who sign up for domain hosting and mention they found out through us, then the less credible we are.
What can you do to help out?
  • If you can suggest anyone who pays cash for advertising (no "store discounts for a CD store" or "banner exchanges") then work on them or refer us to them.
  • If you want a domain or know people who want domains, have them (or you) contact Global Media and tell them you found out of them through BRAINWASHED.
  • If you have any other ideas, please contact us.
Thanks for your time. - Jon Whitney, owner/operator, Brainwashed

If you're near London, you can check out the release party at the I.C.A. for the new biography of Throbbing Gristle & Coum Transmissions. The event will be this Thursday - the 26th. More details on their website.

SOTL ARRIVES
Alas, after months of delay, the new Stars of the Lid release has hit the streets from Kranky in CD and 180-gram LP versions. "Per Aspera Ad Astra" is a collaboration between SOTL and artist Jon McCafferty. Jon painted while they composed/recorded. Quite a neat sounding record, sound samples on the website.

AUDIO WINNERS
The winners in MBM's Prime Audio Soup contest have been chosen. Check out the MBM page for the full report tomorrow.

COIL SONG ON HOLD
This week, there will be no Song of the Week on the Coil site due to the heavy traffic it has been causing recently.

NEWS
RDJ CALLS IT QUITS AND NOBODY CARES
For those of you who haven't heard already, Richard D. James, also known as the Aphex Twin has claimed in a recent interview that he's only going to "release two more albums and that will be that." Bear in mind the following: he has in the past claimed to have invented acid house when he was 11, made all of his music without listening to any other music, built all of his own instruments from scratch (every time he does a new song) and never uses the same instrument twice. Perhaps this means he really *is* bored with making music, in which case it'd probably be best if he does pack it in.

DCD CALLS IT QUITS AND NOBODY CRIES
Rumor has it Dead Can Dance decided to cancel their tour and throw in the towel. It too is probably for the best since Lisa Gerrard has been making phenomenal solo records and Dead Can Dance music has been getting glitzier and less musically interesting. All the best of luck to Lisa.

MOVIES
REVIEWED

AMERICAN HISTORY X
Edward Norton playing a skinhead? After seeing him in a variety of roles varying from stuttering altar boy to fun-loving swinger, I really wasn't expecting anything big from this movie, which had been hyped as one of the most controversial films of the year. I was completely caught off guard. While it was the hardest movie I have had to sit through in a long time, it was definitely one of the most thought-inducing pieces of cinema that I have ever seen. It is impossible to walk out of the theater without strong feelings surrounding the destructive power of hate. There was much less violence in the film then I had imagined, but nonetheless, the violence that did make it in was extremely brutal and graphic. "American History X" is quite possibly the best political/racial movie since Spike Lee put out "Do the Right Thing" way too many years ago. - Carter Adams

CELEBRITY
Oh great, Leonardo DiCaprio and Charlize Theron soiling a movie by one of my favorite directors, Woody Allen. But alas, it's not so. Both have very insignificant roles in the movie in contrast to the hype they recieved and Theron's scene is actually quite humorous. Kenneth Branagh plays an excellent neurotic journalist who wants to produce a film script while in actuality writing a novel. Nothing groundbreaking from Allen, but definitely better then seeing "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer." My only complaints are that they movie was somewhat drawn out (2 hours) and that Woody Allen himself didn't appear in the film. - Carter Adams
