RUSSELL, ARTHUR World of Echo 2LP
2022 repress. "Arthur Russell's most extraordinary work, World of Echo is reissued in this remastered vinyl edition by Audika Records. 18 tracks are featured including drumless versions of his disco classics 'Let's Go Swimming,' 'Tree House,' and 'Wax The Van' along with four previously unreleased tracks. Originally released in 1986, World Of Echo is a deeply intimate and meditative work of awe-inspiring grace and remains a timeless work of sublime beauty. Arthur's aim was to achieve what he calls 'the most vivid rhythmic reality,' with just cello, voice, and echoes. Arthur achieved all of this and more on one of the most incredible albums you will ever hear."

RUSSELL, ARTHUR Iowa Dream 2LP
2022 repress; double LP version. "Over the past decade, the visionary musician Arthur Russell has entered something close to the mainstream. Sampled and referenced by contemporary musicians, his papers now open to visitors at the Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Center in New York, and his name synonymous with a certain strain of tenderness, Russell is as widely known as he's ever been. Thanks to Russell's partner Tom Lee and to Steve Knutson of Audika Records, who have forged several records from Russell's vast archive of unreleased material, the world now hears many versions of Arthur Russell. There's the Iowa boy, the disco mystic, the singer-songwriter and composer, and the fierce perfectionist deep in a world of echo. While all of these elements of Russell are individually true, none alone define him. Now, after ten years of work inside the Russell library, Lee and Knutson bring us Iowa Dream, yet another bright star in Russell's dazzling constellation. Blazing with trademark feeling, these nineteen songs are a staggering collection of Russell's utterly distinct songwriting. And although Russell could be inscrutably single-minded, he was never totally solitary. Collaborating here is a stacked roster of downtown New York musicians, including Ernie Brooks, Rhys Chatham, Henry Flynt, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon, Steven Hall, Jackson Mac Low, Larry Saltzman, and David Van Tieghem. Musician Peter Broderick makes a contemporary addition to this list: more than forty years after Russell recorded several nearly finished songs, Broderick worked diligently with Audika to complete them, and performed audio restoration and additional mixing. Several tracks on Iowa Dream Russell originally recorded as demos, in two early examples of his repeated brushes with potential popular success -- first in 1974, with Paul Nelson of Mercury Records, and then in 1975, with the legendary John Hammond of Columbia Records. For different reasons, neither session amounted to a record deal. Russell kept working nearly up until his death in 1992 from complications of HIV-AIDS. At once kaleidoscopic and intimate, Iowa Dream bears some of Russell's most personal work, including several recently discovered folk songs he wrote during his time in Northern California in the early 1970s. For Russell, Iowa was never very far away. 'I see, I see it all,' sings Russell on the title track: red houses, fields, the town mayor (his father) streaming by as he dream-bicycles through his hometown. Russell's childhood home and family echo, too, through 'Just Regular People,' 'I Wish I Had a Brother,' 'Wonder Boy,' 'The Dogs Outside are Barking,' 'Sharper Eyes,' and 'I Felt.' Meanwhile, songs like 'I Kissed the Girl From Outer Space,' 'I Still Love You,' 'List of Boys,' and 'Barefoot in New York' fizz with pop and dance grooves, gesturing at Russell's devotion to New York's avant-garde and disco scenes. Finally, the long-awaited 'You Did it Yourself,' until now heard only in a brief heart-stopping black-and-white clip in Matt Wolf's documentary Wild Combination, awards us a new take with a driving funk rhythm and Russell's extraordinary voice soaring at the height of its powers. On Iowa Dream, you can hear a country kid meeting the rest of the world -- and with this record, the world continues to meet a totally singular artist."

AFFINITY Affinity LP
Reissue. The sole album by cultish British prog-blues combo Affinity. Originally released in 1970 on influential label Vertigo, their self-titled album is still one of the most original efforts of the England jazz-rock scene. Fronted by Linda Hoyle, a powerful vocalist who sounds like a cross between Carol King and Julie Driscoll, the line-up was completed by Mo Foster (bass), Mike Jupp (electric and 12-string guitars), Lynton Naiff (keyboards), and Grant Serpell (drums and percussion). Their eclectic mixture was truly compelling moving over a certain psychedelic feel, thanks also to the ubiquitous Hammond organ. A singular effort that made definitely history. Fully licensed. CLUSTER Cluster II LP
50th anniversary edition reissue, originally released 1972. Cluster can be counted among the most important international protagonists of the electronic avant-garde. Some credit them with having invented ambient music, others as pioneers of synthesizer pop, whilst to some they are firmly embedded in the krautrock universe. There is some truth in all of these notions. Cluster (or Kluster as they were in the beginning) were founded in 1970 in Berlin by Conrad Schnitzler, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, and Dieter Moebius. A change in direction and musical differences moved Moebius and Roedelius to split from Schnitzler after which the duo recorded ten regular studio albums between 1971 and 2009. Their debut album (Cluster 71) was in Wire Magazine's "One Hundred Records That Set The World On Fire" list. Follow up, Cluster II, has now reached its 50th anniversary and to celebrate Bureau B are releasing a limited anniversary edition, vinyl only in a gatefold sleeve."Cluster II was born in two big cities. Back in 1972 Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius still lived in Berlin, where they were part of the city's swirling underground scene, situated somewhere in the middle of artistic happenings, musical outrageousness and drug abuse: an urban mixture that perceptibly influenced Cluster II, but the album was recorded in Hamburg; one track a live performance at Hamburg's concert hall 'Fabrik' . . . It goes without saying that they could not do completely without electricity, but they mostly manipulated their keyboards and other electric devices in an improvised way, as if rolling their sleeves up for some real manual work. This way Cluster never saw their role reduced to pushing buttons and pressing switches. It is obvious that Roedelius and Moebius were not late in discovering the tape loop as a method of creating repetitive patterns. They also incorporated an analog rhythm machine into Cluster II, even though it did not yet play an essential part on the album but what they firmly relied on was not their equipment, but rather their intuition and the option to decide at any point what was supposed to happen in the next few moments. The fact that they were always ready to run the risk of musical failure is something that cannot be respected highly enough. So, Cluster proceeded in a different way not only from a musical point of view, but also displayed a completely new attitude. Moebius and Roedelius never submitted to their machines but let their personalities as heart and soul musicians be heard at all times to create 'electronic music with a human face'. Conrad Plank, the ingenious sonic magician, who regularly hosted Cluster, Harmonia and others in his studio, displayed so much enthusiasm and inspiration in helping put these new ideas into practice. Bravely and without fear, Cluster had ventured out on a journey without knowing where it would lead them, stepping into fascinating, virgin territory..." --Asmus Tietchens

Sven-Åke Johansson (Mariestad, Sweden, 1943) works as a composer, drummer, accordionist, poet, and visual artist. Longtime collaborator of the free improv scene in the German '60s with Kowald, Brötzmann, Schlippenbach. He contributed to numerous exhibitions, publications, and recordings. Sven-Åke Johansson - drums. Recorded 1972 in Stockholm, Schweden. Engineered by Göran Freese. Cover photo by Norbert Eisbrenner. Cover by SÅJ. Remastering by Martin Siewert, 2019. 180 gram vinyl."Sven-Åke Johansson's 1972 record Schlingerland presents just the man and his drum set, exploring the polyrhythmic possibilities of his kit. Schlingerland fills a gap in the documentation of '70s European improvisation. SUZUKI, HIROMASA Rock Joint Biwa - Kumikyoku Fulukotofumi LP
Reissue, originally released in 1973. The Fulukotofumi is the most important and ancient historical chronicle of Japan. The content of this work becomes an inspiration for the creation of a sound transposition of the legends and myths that most marked the spirit and inspiration of Hiromasa Suzuki, as a musician and as a high-level composer. The music that is concentrated between these grooves is a representation of the best that moved in the early seventies in the jazz-rock orbit at an international level; in addition, very strong infiltrations of tradition, characterized above all by the extremely calibrated and perfectly ad hoc interventions of the Biwa (lute of the Japanese tradition once used by blind monks to recite poems) and the Wadaiko drum. From its entirety, a highly evocative and magical sketch in nine suites emerges, a viaticum towards the most ancestral past of Japan, but at the same time also immersed in the modernity and expressive relevance of the land of the rising sun. A masterpiece that, buried for too long in the archives, is finally back reissued on vinyl with original graphics on its gatefold cover and enriched by an insert with the translations of the precious introductory essay contained in its original edition. Accompanying Suzuki's acoustic and electric piano is the crème of Japanese jazz that gives free rein to one's primordial instincts. Some passages come close to progressive, especially thanks to Kiyoshi Sugimoto's Allan Holdsworth style guitar.

SUZUKI, HIROMASA Rock Joint Cither - Silk Road LP
Reissue, originally released in 1973. After the space-time experience and the translation into music of the Bible of Japanese civilization, the Fulukotofumi, the following year, in 1973, Hiromasa Suzuki pushes his research and experimentation beyond the borders of his own country by venturing, with the usual companions of adventure (Kunimitsu Inaba, Hideo Sekine, etc.), along the lights and shadows of the Silk Road. A backward journey in search of the musical and cultural sources of mainland Asia, from the gates of India to the roots of China. If the Biwa lute characterized the previous chapter dedicated to the profound ancestral of Japan, here, the sitar, the Asian instrument par excellence, becomes a new narrator; Suzuki plans and manages the interventions by juxtaposing it with an opera that, like the previous one, always remains strongly jazz and rock, at times very similar to Ian Carr's Nucleus. A precious find in the endless and seminal musical archeology of modern Japanese music. Gatefold; includes insert.

GUSTAFSSON, MATS Naja (Black Cross Solo Sessions 5) CD
Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson might have a separate discography for his solo records. He's investigated the possibilities of unaccompanied reed music from almost every angle. Presented with the opportunity to make a new solo record under the isolation of the pandemic, Gustafsson returned to a project he'd conceptualized but never realized: the playing-card pieces of Peter Brötzmann. Although these Fluxus-like prompts are better known through the two card sets the German saxophonist created in the 1990s, which resulted in two CDs with his Chicago Tentet, Images and Signs (both released on Okka Disk in 2004), Brötzmann had in fact been using cards since the 1970s. Recording in his home studio in Nickelsdorf, Austria, Gustafsson used two of these sets of compositional prompts, one designed for the ICP Tentet and another intended as a spur for Brötzmann's own solo work. The instrumentation on Naja includes the entire saxophone family from sopranino to bass, as well as a piece for mouthpieces; this is also a rare opportunity to hear Gustafsson play more than one horn at the same time, a Roland Kirk move that he'd long ago sworn off but was prompted to do by the cards. In addition to nine pieces using the cards, Gustafsson played one non-card composition from Brötzmann's solo FMP LP 14, Love Poems. Stunningly mixed and mastered by Martin Siewert, with liner notes by Gustafsson, photos of the card boxes and the first photograph of Gustafsson and Brötzmann. Cover art, as on all Black Cross Solo Sessions CDs, by Christopher Wool.

DRAKE, HAMID Dedications (Black Cross Solo Sessions 6) CD
One of the towering creative musicians of our time, a master drummer and percussionist, Hamid Drake has anchored innumerable bands. As a hard-working player, constantly touring the globe, he's collaborated with most of the major figures in improvised music and contemporary jazz, from David Murray and Peter Brötzmann to Pharoah Sanders and Don Cherry. Along the way, Drake has never had an opportunity to stop and make a solo record. Indeed, he's only performed solo on a few occasions. John Corbett began petitioning Drake to record an unaccompanied session twenty years ago. At last, after the pandemic had (just slightly) slowed down Drake's incessant travel itinerary, a plan was hatched and he entered Experimental Sound Studio during the cold, hard month of December, 2020. With Corbett, Jim Dempsey, and engineer Alex Inglizian as his audience, Drake worked through a vaguely plotted-out blueprint, however after a few months had passed, the drummer was unsatisfied with the result. He returned to the studio in July, 2021, with no pre-planned notion, and this time the Hamid Drake magic was everywhere -- perched on his drum-throne, working exclusively at the kit, sometimes plying metallic percussion atop the snare, Drake recorded nine tracks, a cornucopia of rhythms and textures that touch on his love of reggae and funk but retain the openness and buoyancy that have made him such a go-to figure among his peers. In the CD's liner notes, he says: "A dedication in spirit to all those who have influenced, helped, opened, nurtured, shown love for, and cared for me along the way." These include Brötzmann's band Die Like a Dog, long-term percussion pal Adam Rudolph and mentor Fred Anderson, fellow drummers Paul Lovens and Milford Graves, Don and Moki Cherry, Big Black, and others. The record, precisely and soulfully recorded by Inglizian, has the beauty and warmth that always radiate from Drake's sticks, from his person and spirit -- deep humanity in the form of an unstoppable engine room. LINDSAY, ARTO Charivari (Black Cross Solo Sessions 7) CD
One of the architects of no wave with his band DNA, a pioneer of noise guitar, sublimely inventive producer, and slinkily seductive songwriter, Arto Lindsay has worn countless musical hats. Invited to make a solo record for the Black Cross Solo Sessions, Lindsay boiled it down to essential ingredients, waxing a collection of bristling new songs and works for solo guitar; on six of a baker's dozen tracks, his angelic voice offsets the bracing dissonance of his acidic electric. Recorded at studios in Brooklyn and Araras, Brazil, Charivari has the intensity of a killer live session; it's closer in vibe to the more aggressive side of his work -- think of his trio outing Aggregates 1-26 or the barbed riffs of classic DNA -- than gorgeously arranged solo songwriting records like O Corpo Sutil (The Subtle Body). In these razor sharp cuts you may well discover the identity of what, in the song "Nothing," Lindsay calls "holier than thou timing." CD contains full transcriptions of Lindsay's lyrics. PARKINS, ZEENA To Dusk (Black Cross Solo Sessions 8) CD
Every day over the course of a year starting in June, 2020, in something she refers to as a "domestic ritual," Zeena Parkins recorded solo electric harp performances in her home studio. The brilliant improvisor and composer had, like most of her peers, been sidelined by the pandemic; unable to tour, she spent the end of each day at the harp, playing until sunlight waned, inventing and discovering new soundscapes, keeping her musical self together while the world seemed poised to crumble. Parkins's audience consisted of her boyfriend, filmmaker Jeff Preis (who filmed and recorded all the music) and their dog. Invited to participate in the Black Cross Solo Sessions, she returned to this deep well of recordings and selected ten tracks, augmenting the harp with pedals and resonant and resonating objects including bells and other percussion. To Dusk is a uniquely vibrating set of auditory investigations, a buzzing, ringing, hammering, plunging suite of instant compositions snatched from the maw of a malicious moment in the world's collective history. Liner notes by Zeena Parkins. Cover artwork and design by Christopher Wool.

REID & FRED LONBERG-HOLM, TOMEKA Eight Pieces for Two Cellos LP
Repertoire for cello represents a little-explored niche of the greater jazz songbook. In 2013, cellists Tomeka Reid and Fred Lonberg-Holm turned their arranger-ly and composer-ly attention to this terrain, assembling a selection of four originals (three by Lonberg-Holm, one by Reid) and four works by other composers. The latter include "Pluck It" by pioneering jazz cellist Fred Katz, member of the Chico Hamilton Quintet and soundtrack composer for Roger Corman films; "In Walked Ray" by intrepid hardbop bassist and cellist Sam Jones, who worked extensively with Cannonball Adderley; "Rally" by legendary bassist and cellist Ron Carter, who played with everyone from Miles Davis to Eric Dolphy to A Tribe Called Quest; and "Monti-Cello" by Harry Babsin, the least recognizable name in the group who played cello duets with Oscar Pettiford and recorded the first jazz cello solos with Dodo Marmarosa Trio in 1947. These new takes on old charts provide a storied backdrop and contemporary diving-board for Reid and Lonberg-Holm. By turns achingly beautiful -- utilizing all the woody resonance of the twinned instruments -- and probingly exploratory, they pay reverence to and also rethink their predecessors' music. Alongside these historically-mined tracks are the player's own deeply engaging compositions. Reid's "Alla Mingus For La Bang" pays homage to one stringsman by way of another: bassist Charles Mingus to violinist Billy Bang. Lonberg-Holm's "Fragile, C'mon," and "How Can We?" all investigate the bowed and pizz'ed cosmos of the celli with devilish relish. Gorgeously recorded direct-to-stereo sans audience at Chicago's Logan Art Center, with a cover that sports a painting by Lonberg-Holm.

ZETTERBERG, TORBOJRN Opinions LP
Torbjörn Zetterberg's new record, Opinions, is not a conventional "solo" outing. It doesn't represent the bassist, composer, and bandleader stepping away from all that to prove his mettle as a virtuoso unaccompanied improvisor. Anyone familiar with Zetterberg's small group recordings needs no confirmation of his prowess. And anyway, strutting his stuff is not his vibe. Certainly not the vibe of this record, where the bassist plays more than bass, a solo venture on which he is occasionally joined by others. What we have on Opinions is something altogether different, nearly impossible to describe except in parts -- minimal electronic/maximal prog/eco conceptual/experimental song form. With myriad instruments and multitrack studio composition, painstakingly assembled 2020-22, the LP's tracks have an episodic nature, and in this sense -- perhaps this alone -- they connect with other parts of the Swedish musician's oeuvre, his propensity for contrasting and juxtaposing sections, which can be deliciously heard on his records with The Torbjörn Zetterberg Hot Fiveor Torbjörn Zetterberg and Den Stora Frågen (including the latter ensemble's 2019 CD Live, also on Corbett Vs. Dempsey). But Opinions is a stand-alone work, a strange and wondrous personal adventure, a set of landscape miniatures contained in a bottle, each one equally abstract and actual, heady and guttural, melodic and textural, reaching for elements from across the musical map but never as pastiche, rather as deeply submerged influence, meditative result, a splash in icy water after the opium of sauna. Not your everyday solo record. Opinions introduces something particular: a chunk of raw coal buried far below surface that emerges faceted and glisten-y. Torbjörn Zetterberg writes: "This is without a doubt my best work so far. If you know me, you probably know me as a bass playing jazz musician. Yes, that's true, but pretty far from the whole truth. You'll be surprised. Not that this isn't jazz. Perhaps it is. If you say it is, why? If you say it's not, why? If you know the answer, please let me know. Me, I only hear music. The 'concept' behind this album was: not to box myself but to let creativity lead the way, all the way. I took guidance from the smallest kids in the playground. Apart from 'Brevet Från Lillan,' which was recorded at Zengården, the Zen Buddhist monastery where I live, everything was recorded in my apartment and my studio in Stockholm. Apart from drums on 'Random Thoughts,' which were played by Konrad Agnas, and Anna Högberg's alto sax on 'Opinions part 2,' I did everything myself including samples, singing, playing all instruments, recording, mixing, and mastering..."

MCPHEE & TOMEKA REID, JOE Let Our Rejoicing Rise LP
In the year that Juneteenth was finally declared a national US holiday, 2021, Joe McPhee and Tomeka Reid united for a live concert in celebration. Multi-instrumentalist McPhee was deeply moved by the historical nature of the circumstances, the incredible freight of that history of oppression and liberation represented in the legislation, both the insanity of its overdue-ness and the joy of its institutionalization. As a preamble to the music, McPhee led off with two poems, read with trembling, vehement intensity: "Alone Together" and "Nation Time For Real This Time." Then, without a pause, they launched into a 33-minute duet for tenor saxophone and cello that gutted everyone in the packed audience, alighting for a brief segment on the late-19th century hymn "Lift Every Voice and Sing," the so-called African-American National Anthem, lyrics from which the title of the record is taken. At the concert's end, McPhee was nearly inconsolable, the immensity of the day and the emotion of the playing overtaking him alone in the dressing room. Let Our Rejoicing Rise is a kind of apotheosis, an outpouring of two sensitive souls at the dawn of a new day in an epoch of damnation. With a jubilant cover image by Gee's Bend quilter Mary Lee Bendolph, recorded and mastered by Alex Inglizian, it's a once-in-a-lifetime record.

WILD BILLY CHILDISH & THE SINGING LOINS The Fighting Temeraire LP
"New studio album by Wild Billy Childish and Arf and Rob from The Singing Loins. In memory of Chris Broderick of the Singing Loins, who passed away earlier this year, we present a new studio album by Wild Billy Childish and Arf and Rob from The Singing Loins. The Fighting Temeraire contains new songs, old songs re-worked, traditional songs and a Bob Dylan cover. HMS Temeraire was a 96 gun ship of the line, built in Chatham, as was HMS Victory. After the passing of their dear friend, Chris Broderick, (lead Singer of The Singing Loins), Billy, Arf, and Rob decided to get together and record a 45 in his memory. The single 'Song of the Medway' soon led to this full-length LP. The Billy/Loins connection goes back to the early '90s. Billy had recorded the first two Singing Loins LPs in his bathroom back then, as well as an LP of folk variations of his own tunes with Chris and Arf. It was Chris's dying wish that the boys should continue the Singing Loins, so it was pretty much a given that this fine LP would come to be. At once ancient and modern, it is a fitting tribute to a great ship (and singer) of the Medway."

But it is a musing on popular standards and uses much of the same instrumentation that many of our country's most popular records have. Yes, Bad Timing is a theme record, Jim O'Rourke's pop opera, just waiting for someone to come along and play with it. Based on Fahey-esque 6-string acoustic guitar foundations, each of the three pieces expand to include other musical elements. ISHIBASHI, EIKO The Dream My Bones Dream LP
2022 repress. "Eiko Ishibashi's sixth solo album, The Dream My Bones Dream, rides the rails into a partly envisioned, partly imagined past. Eiko's previous songs-with-singing records explored the ambitions and intoxications of pop music -- but never so dramatically as with The Dream My Bones Dream. Here, her songs open up into reflections upon the vast spaces that exist between people as close as family members -- in other words, reflections on the things we spend our whole lives drinking and cursing about! When we're not trying to forget what we were told about god, that is . . . It's been four years since Car and Freezer, a time during which Eiko has been steadily working, writing for stage and cinema, playing live and recording (and hanging out with her no-goodnik boyfriend!). In 2016, she toured Europe and released Kouen Kyoudai (Editions Mego), a collaboration with Masami Akita. At Sinnerfama Lisbon later that year, she won the Best New Music Award for her soundtrack to The Albino's Trees. In 2018, Black Truffle released Ichida, her collaboration with Darin Gray. Amongst all this abject jet-setting and debauched gadding about, the music of The Dream My Bones Dream started to gather. It began with the death of Eiko's father. Going through family effects in the aftermath, she found photos from a time she knew nothing about: her father's childhood. A taciturn man, he had never discussed this period of his life. Classic dad! As it transpired, it took place in an infamous setting of recent Japanese history, the occupation of China's Manchurian region in the 1940s. In the light of this, questions about Eiko's lost family history took on a larger resonance. No, not war crimes! Please try and keep your head out of the gutter. We're talking about lyrical things here -- the ever-changing relationships between people and places in our lives, okay? The music is richly conceived in cinematic arrangements with details referencing Eiko's grandfather, who worked as a railroad man in occupied territory. The few images Eiko had to base her exploration on are set in shifting landscapes colored by the unreliable narrators of history. For Eiko, the train that ran through this rough terrain is now headed for her future, and only by accepting its past will she able to direct it through what is to come. Something to think about, yeah? We at Drag City are hopeful that this musical message will be blared down the main streets of Fascist Everytown, USA -- at least until they come to get us! On The Dream My Bones Dream, as with Eiko's previous albums, the diverse sounds within the musical arrangement and the qualities of Jim O'Rourke's mix (off the couch and mixing again!) are crucial to the achievement. The Dream My Bones Dream is a record of exquisite musicality and deep emotions, a travelogue pointed towards a time hopefully better than the future we see coming down the line! Any eventuality where we can listen to The Dreams My Bones Dream would be preferable to that one."

AMBARCHI, OREN Shebang LP
Repressed! LP version. "Extended guitar hero Oren Ambarchi returns with Shebang, the latest in the series of intricately detailed long-form rhythmic workouts that includes Quixotism (2014) and Hubris (2016). Like those records, Shebang features an international all-star cast of musical luminaries, their contributions recorded individually in locations from Sweden to Japan yet threaded together so convincingly (by Ambarchi in collaboration with Konrad Sprenger) that it's hard to believe they weren't breathing the same studio air. Expanding on the techniques used on Simian Angel (2019), we can never be entirely sure who is responsible for what we hear, as Ambarchi's guitar is used to trigger everything from bass lines to driving piano riffs. Picking up from the staccato guitar patterns that ran through Hubris, Shebang's single 35-minute track begins with a precisely interwoven lattice of chiming guitar figures, expanding Hubris' monolithic pulse into a joyous, hyper-rhythmic melodicism that calls up points of reference as disparate as Albert Marcoeur, early Pat Metheny Group, and Henry Kaiser's It's A Wonderful Life. Building from isolated single notes into densely layered poly-rhythms, the muted guitar tones are joined by subtle touches of shimmering Leslie cabinet tones and guitar synth. Simmering down and funneling into a single note, the guitar stew is soon thickened by Joe Talia's propulsive ride cymbal, which blossoms into a beautifully flowing yet rigorously snapped-to fusion funk, whose ever-shifting details skitter across the kit -- think '70s heavyweights like Jack DeJohnette or Jon Christensen. An unexpected entry of guttural bass clarinet licks from Sam Dunscombe begins the series of instrumental features that pepper the remainder of the piece. Soon we hear from the legendary British pedal steel player B.J. Cole (hopefully known to some listeners from his outer-limits singer-songwriter masterpiece The New Hovering Dog or, failing that, 'Tiny Dancer'), whose languorous yet uneasy lines float in and out of a shifting rhythmic foundation supported by a single note bass groove, cut through with aleatoric synth articulations. Though single-mindedly occupying its rhythmic space throughout, Shebang's dense ensemble sound is carefully composed while drawing on the free flow of improvisation, with individual voices momentarily coming to the fore and subtle changes in harmony and texture. Perhaps the most surprising of these shifts occurs around half-way through when the smoke of a buzzing synth crescendo from Jim O'Rourke clears to reveal something like a piano trio, with Ambarchi's guitar-triggered piano patterns providing restless accompaniment to flowing melodic lines from Chris Abrahams of The Necks, while Johan Berthling's double bass and Talia's drums fill out the bottom end. Before long, things take another left turn as Julia Reidy's rapidly picked 12-string guitar lines take center stage, with O'Rourke's monumental synth clouds hovering in the distance. The ensemble surges through a slow series of harmonic changes before the whole shebang dissolves into a delirious synthetic mirage. Bridging minimalism, contemporary electronics, and classic ECM stylings, and bringing together a cast of preternaturally talented contributors, Shebang is unmistakably the work of Oren Ambarchi: obsessively detailed, relentlessly rhythmic, unabashedly celebratory."

2 SQUARE Y? The Secret Degree LP
Color vinyl. "Avant pop masterpiece, new band and new recordings from respected UK underground DIY post-punk legends. Mozart was a freemason. While still a baby, he was gifted a magic !ute on which he wrote all his tunes. Some of them are still around. Even so, the best way to gift-wrap your head around The Secret Degree, the latest release from Xentos Fray Bentos (guitars, keys, voice) and Ted 'Tebbs' Barrow (circuit-bending, percussion) is to picture it as a town. A town full of pity: Five blocks long, forty miles north of nowhere, with an empty gas station, a closed-up diner and the smoking remains of a Freemason's Hall, recently burnt to the ground by a pack of incensed villagers fresh out of a Universal Pictures' Frankenstein. In among the pitted ruins sit Ted and Xentos, plucking and slapping their instruments, busily exploring the folkish blue roots that underpin today's music making and trying to figure out how we got to where we're at. Feel free to roll up one leg of your pants, curl up a sleeve and join them on this nimble trip through an imaginary landscape of coltishly cultivated harmonies, mind-jingling melodies, all tempered by the occasional banshee wail of an untamable circuit. NOYES & JOSEPH ALLRED, ROB Avoidance Language LP
2022 repress. "There have been some very cool guitar duo LPs over the years -- Bert Jansch & John Renbourn's Bert & John, Danny Kalb & Stefan Grossman's Crosscurrents, Jody Harris & Robert Quine's Escape, Charalambides' Joy Shapes, Bill Orcutt & Michael Morley's Electric Guitar Duets, any comp of Kansas Joe McCoy & Memphis Minnie, etc. -- but there has never been one quite like Avoidance Language. It is a wild-eyed classic from start to finish. Ostensibly a meeting between two guitarists lurking around the Boston area (although Rob has since moved to Japan), Joseph's mastery of other instruments (harmonium and banjo) affords the pair a wider range of sounds than some of their precedents. But they also eschew vocals here, so that kinda balances things out. At least in my book. The album's four tracks display brilliance and variety in spades. 'Feet of Clay and a Crown of Stars' is a two guitar conversation, with notes initially slurring and sliding against each other, then spreading out like waves of sound hitting a sandy beach. It's like something you might hear inside your head if John Fahey dunked you in one of the hot tubs at Big Sur. On 'Stutter Study' Allred uses his harmonium to soften the rhythmically tangled briar patch improvs by Noyes. 'A Valid Subspecies' pairs Noyes' guitar with Allred's provocatively original banjo inventions. Rob's playing on this one mixes ruminative downstrokes with aggressive single string highlighting in a style quite different from his trademark whirlwindery. Finally, on the title track, we are shown another intricate and deftly woven two guitar tapestry. It makes me imagine what Robbie Basho might have done in response to 'The Hall of Mirrors in the Palace at Versailles' from John Cale & Terry Riley's Church of Anthrax album. What can I say, but 'Wow.' Avoidance Language is one for the ages. Don't miss your chance to get ahead of its curve." --Byron Coley, 2021

HAASTRUP, JONI Wake Up Your Mind (Deluxe Gatefold) LP
2022 restock. Hot Casa reissues Joni Haastrup's Wake Up Your Mind, originally recorded in 1978. Growing up in a royal household in Nigeria, Joni Haastrup began his musical journey performing for his brother's band Sneakers and was quickly snapped up as a vocalist for Orlando Julius Ekemode and his Modern Aces's 1966 Super Afro Soul album (VAMPI 091CD), one of Afro-beat's formative albums. Soon after, Ginger Baker of Cream fame replaced Steve Winwood with Joni on keys for Air Force's UK concerts in '71 and the success of the collaboration led to further shows with Baker as part of the SALT project before he returned to Nigeria to set up MonoMono. Back in London in 1978, Joni recorded his solo gem Wake Up Your Mind for the Afrodesia imprint. Laced with funk basslines, swirling keyboards and screaming guitars, this is Joni's most "western" record but at the same time, unmistakably African in origin. From the slow-motion disco of "Greetings" to the stone-cold groove of "Watch Out" to the Reuben Wilson-style funk of "Free My People" Joni was soaking up the sounds of the times and blending them with the music of his roots. CHRISTIANSEN, HENNING Satie I Hoj So LP
Restocked, last copies. The Institute for Danish Sound Archeology and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde, Denmark present a reissue of the most enigmatic and rare of Danish artist and composer Henning Christiansen's albums Satie I Høj Sø. Originally released in 1977, the album collects five central works from Christiansen's neo-romantic period in the 1970s. This completely overlooked and virtually unheard period in Henning Christiansen's oeuvre contains perhaps his most fascinating and beautiful works. For ten years, from 1969-79, Christiansen turned his back to the art scene and made a very unorthodox artistic decision: To leave behind "art for arts sake", fluxus, and the concretist art music, that he had invented in the 1960s. Instead he created a music that was a positive vision for the future. A music that would make it "sing" inside the listeners -- and by changing them would change the world. A convinced communist, Christiansen created wonderful joyous waltzes and dancing melodies that set to bring about a revolution -- both an inner and an outer revolution -- by believing in the good in the world and by having hope for a bright future. Now, with the re-release of Satie I Høj Sø the music can make it sing inside us again. "Art should be such, that the People believe in themselves" --Henning Christiansen, journal entry, 1971. Carefully remastered from the original master tapes; 180 gram vinyl; High gloss cover; Henning Christiansen's own program notes for the music in both Danish and English -- 16-page booklet with never-before-seen pictures and a new in-depth article about Christiansen's works from the 1970s in Danish and English.

GALAS, DIAMANDA Diamanda Galas CD
Reissue, originally released in 1984. "Diamanda Galás's second album is sometimes referred to as Panoptikon (the composition on the A-side of the album). The album consists of two pieces: 'Panoptikon', which was inspired by Jack Henry Abbott, whose 1981 autobiographical book In the Belly of the Beast chronicled his experiences in the prison system, and '???????? ??? ?? ???? ??? ?????????????' ('Song from the Blood of Those Murdered'), a work dedicated to the political prisoners who were tortured and executed during the 1967-74 Greek military junta. The album, originally released on the label Metalanguage (founded by Henry Kaiser and Larry Ochs in 1978), has long been out of print. It is now available for the first time on CD, and reissued on vinyl for the first time. Remastered by Heba Kadry, with updated artwork overseen by Galás, it follows the recent reissue of Galás's 1982 solo debut The Litanies of Satan (2020) and her new solo piano LP De-formation (2021) on Intravenal Sound Operations. From original liner notes by Richard Zvonar (edited by Galás 2021): 'Panoptikon is a cry of rage by a caged prisoner against his jailer who is concealed from his victims by an impenetrable wall of technology. The title of the work derives from a design for a new kind of prison, proposed in 1843 by Jeremy Bentham. This edifice consisted of a central observation tower, ringed by multiple tiers of cells. Each prisoner could be kept under continual observation by his keepers, yet he would see neither them nor his fellow inmates. Such a polarization of power, manifested through architectural constraint and omnipresent surveillance, would leave an indelible mark upon the victim, even after release. In Galás's piece, the architecture of the Panoptikon is a model for the architecture of the performance work. The observation tower is aurally present as a continuous pulse, placed behind the audience and in opposition to the performer/victim through whose ranting can be seen the progressive psychosis of one buried alive. The walls of his prison become increasingly monolithic as layer upon layer of sound is built up around him -- each one a transformation of the sound of her voice.'"

GALAS, DIAMANDA The Divine Punishment CD
Reissue, originally released in 1986. Includes poster and lyric insert. "On June 30, 1986, the same day that Diamanda Galás's The Divine Punishment was released, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of Georgia's so-called sodomy law in Bowers v. Hardwick, criminalizing consensual sex between men. At the time, about 15,000 people were known to have died of AIDS in the U.S. alone, with little government acknowledgement besides suggestions to quarantine homosexuals on island colonies. By the end of 2021, the number of AIDS deaths globally would exceed 36 million. The first album in her Masque of the Red Death trilogy, The Divine Punishment is one of the most jarring works of art produced in response to the AIDS epidemic, and a milestone in Diamanda Galás's artistry and activism. Galás uses her famous voice both as an oratory instrument and as well as a physical representation of AIDS and those it afflicts. The album features the panphonic dirge work of Galás, accompanied by analogue synthesizers played by Dave Hunt. The texts are primarily taken from the Old Testament, contrasting the hectoring lawmakers of Leviticus with the desperate appeals of the Lamentations and Book of Psalms (Psalm 22, 59, and 88). In doing so, she indicts those who use religion to instigate the witch hunts that inevitably accompany real and perceived plagues. Today, The Divine Punishment sounds no less audacious than when it was released in 1986, but one hears it with a sense of shared trauma and a renewed call to action. Galás imbues all her work with the crushing weight of history -- the hypnotic cadences of her vocal work are precisely aligned to the liturgical texts employed. Remastered with exceptional clarity by mastering engineer Heba Kadry working from the original mixes by London-based producer/ composer Dave Hunt, it's a work of great empathy, solidarity, and physical power. Coming amid another pandemic marked by ignorance and division, its anger and fervor feels remarkably urgent."

GALAS, DIAMANDA Broken Gargoyles CD
"Employing a vast array of advanced vocal and instrumental techniques, Broken Gargoyles is arguably Galas's most intellectually, sonically and viscerally formidable work to date. The album finds the visionary artist deftly probing the weaving, warping transformation on the nervous systems of her post-traumatic soldiers and dying diseased. Composed in 2020 during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the first presentation of Broken Gargoyles featured verses by German poet Georg Heym, 'Das Fieberspital' and 'Die Dämonen der Stadt.' The work was finalized in 2020 in collaboration with the artist and sound designer Daniel Neumann. In 'Das Fieberspital' Heym describes the horrific state of people suffering from yellow fever who live in paralyzing fear of death and swirling delirium owing to their brutal treatment and isolation in medical wards in early 20th-century Germany. 'Die Dämonen der Stadt' also addresses such grim portents of World War I; in this poem, the god Baal observes (like a gargoyle) a town from a rooftop of a city block at nighttime and lets a street burn down during dawn. The final incarnation of the work was played as a sound installation at the Kapellen Leprosarium (Leper 's Sanctuary) in Hanover, Germany. 'Mutilatus' (side one) recedes in an approaching chilly ill wind, Galás intones over subdued whining electronics, cawing birds, semi-human verbalizations and something somewhere between these things. The often Sisyphean sound throughout Broken Gargoyles plumbs great depths in the album' s second part, 'Abiectio' (humiliation, dejection, despondency), which draws from the Heym poems 'Der Blinde' and 'Der Hunger' and the last verses of 'Das Fieberspital.'"

"Eddie Harris Quartet - Live At Fabrik Hamburg 1988; Gatefold, 180 gram vinyl. This musician is simultaneously world-famous and unknown. The label Atlantic periodically re-released the recording of a very special concert he took part in and everybody who is somehow interested in jazz, even if only on its fringes, most probably has listened to at least one of the numbers performed by the saxophonist Eddie Harris. On June 21, 1969, he met with singer and pianist Les McCann on stage of the old casino of Montreux to unleash what can only be described as a firework of music, hardly ever experienced by the jazz community before. Situated somewhere between jazz, funk and soul, McCann and Eddie Harris actually create (this is no exaggeration!) something like a new style; and "'Compared to What', Les McCann's spectacular song oscillating between 'black consciousness' and the civil rights rhetoric, became the hymn of this movement."

BLANK GLOSS Melt CD
Melt is the debut full-length album by Blank Gloss, the Sacramento duo of Patrick Hills and Morgan Fox. Attentive listeners will recall their lovely contribution to Kompakt's Pop Ambient 2021, "Of A Vessel", which reappears here; others might know their 2020 mini-album, January, released on the stylish Miami label, Night Young. With Melt, Blank Gloss make a heavy contribution to Kompakt's ongoing explorations of the hundreds of hues of Pop Ambience. A lush dream of an album, it's a remarkable index of the gilded eternities that you can magic from a reduced tonal palette: glistening guitars, ruminative piano, warps and weaves of subtle drone and hum. The two members of Blank Gloss met through their shared involvement in punk and experimental music. Fox's band had recorded at Hills' Earthtone studio a number of times; they hit it off and made the decision to explore making music together. Their initial explorations resulted in their mini-album, January; for Melt, they aimed for something more minimal and improvised. Choosing not to spend too much time hyper-focused on any one thing freed Fox and Hills to make music that's guided by intuition, inhabiting the moment and reaching for the next surprising possibility. The long reels of e-bow guitar that wind through opener "Those Who Plant" ease the listener into an album that says plenty by doing less: witness the dream scripts that play out through pieces like "Hollowed Out" and "Of A Vessel", the gentle weightlessness of "Almost Home", or the clusters of guitar, expressive yet restrained, that sculpt "Rags" into being. It's an album that feels sui generis, somehow, much as it clearly sits within a number of fields -- pop ambient, touches of new age and drone music. Some provisional clues, though, for music that echoes Melt's loveliness: the humble ambience of the artists on Cold Blue Music; the eventless horizon of Bark Psychosis' "Pendulum Man"; the emotive pointillism of Labradford; some of the snippets of song that drift through Pieter Nooten and Michael Brook's Sleeps With The Fishes. Like all of this music, Melt embraces a radical ambiguity, one that allows the listener to enter the frame and inhabit the corners of the duo's music. There's pleasure and joy here too, of course -- you can hear it in the ease of the playing and the beauty of the melodies that Blank Gloss carefully dapple across the tonal field.

BIONAUT, THE Everybody's Kissing Everyone LP
Warehouse find, last copies of this otherwise o/p LP. The story's been told before, though perhaps it hasn't been documented as well as it should have been: a group of young producers in Germany were knocked out by acid tracks, and in particular, the UK's acid house moment, convinced by the way it negotiated pop's pleasure and dancing's drive. Across the turn of the decade, The Bionaut's Jörg Burger, alongside friends and peers Wolfgang Voigt, Ingmar Koch, Cem Oral, Andreas Bolz, and Gregor Luttermann, would produce a dizzying number of tracks under a mountain of pseudonyms. 1992 was a turning point for Burger. Moving between Frankfurt and Cologne, Burger produced Everybody's Kissing Everyone with one eye on the dancefloor, the other on the lounge room. The productions from these fruitful sessions share a glam pop element, even at their most supine, with Burger returning to his pop roots. This was a running theme across the '90s, as he released a stretch of pop-electronica albums and EPs as The Bionaut and The Modernist. Vivid and welcoming, precision-tooled for the dancefloor, dewy-eyed and humbly melancholy, The Bionaut's productions manage to make risk and experimentation welcoming, joyous -- the inverse of so much studious experimental music. Talking about his productions as The Bionaut, Burger uses the term "metapop" to explain his music, and that's a perfect way of thinking about what he does -- it's at once pop and beyond pop, with a knowingness that gleefully ransacks pop's history. You can hear, in the seven tracks on Everybody's Kissing Everyone, reflections of UK acid house, the spiraling squelch of Chicago acid tracks, the lilting lightness of pop-trance, but the connecting force is a lushness of tone and richness of melody that points forward to the pop-tronica of later Bionaut. Here, Burger takes a snapshot of that precise middle-point between the dancefloor and the bedroom and colors it in both primaries and pastels. It's a most elegant swoon. Includes liner notes. Includes download code with two unreleased bonus tracks. Yellow marbled vinyl.

COLONEL ELLIOTT AND THE LUNATICS Interstellar Reggae LP
Reissue, originally released in 1973. What if Lee Perry and Lex Baxter have been caught in a firetrap altogether? A weird experiment in dub and reggae coined in 1973, the sole album of this interstellar venture was a case in point. Jamaican rhythms (provided by the almighty Trojan Records crew) with legendary prog/psych keyboardist Ken Elliot (former member of influential British bands such as Second Hand and Seventh Wave) creating groovy instrumental on top. Ten tracks including the Joe Meek classic "Telstar" and a spacey rendition of The Skatalities' "Guns Of Navarone" (aptly named "Guns Of The Martian Giants") for an album that might sounds like a Caribbean easy listening session on dope. A true gem on its own, incredible strange music for the suburbs. Fully remastered and licensed.

MUTANTS, THE Curse Of The Easily Amused LP
"It's hard to let go of a good thing. More than four decades after the Mutants first appeared on the San Francisco underground music scene, four of the original members are still playing shows together under that name in 2022. After all, mutants are known to mutate, and that's what this colorful, energetic musical collective has been doing off and on since 1977. Perhaps even more surprisingly, the sessions for their lone album, 1982's Fun Terminal, continue to bring forth lost nuggets. In punk and new wave lore, Fun Terminal is considered a troubled project. Prior to the album's appearance, the Mutants had released only one 7-inch single -- 1980s' The Mutants EP -- and the band also had songs featured on two local compilations. Both the EP and one of the compilations were issued by 415 Records, the legendary Bay Area indie that made the jump from the new wave trenches to the majors when they signed a deal with Columbia Records in 1981. Many scenesters felt that the Mutants should have begun album sessions for 415 immediately after the EP, but that didn't happen. Each of the 14 tracks on the new collection, Curse Of the Easily Amused" has either been remixed, or sourced from previously unreleased tapes. 'From the band's point of view, each cut is a substantially different version than what might have appeared before,' explains current Mutants bassist and project producer Peter Conheim. Eight songs have never been officially released on vinyl or CD in any form. The versions of 'Think Think Think' and 'Tribute to Russ Meyer' feature radically different approaches than what was heard on the Fun Terminal reissue. We recently rediscovered a tape reel that included those songs. The Mutants discarded or forgot about a ridiculous amount of music during its first eight years. Audio quality for all the tracks here is superior to anything that's come before. No overdubs were used in preparing this release."

PLASTIC CRIMEWAVE SYNDICATE Space Alley LP
"Plastic Crimewave Syndicate has finally returned with a wide-ranging/raging new album -- recorded two years ago in an expansive, benevolent alleyway in the midst of a dark, diseased, claustrophobic time of global chaos. The new PCWS album, entitled Space Alley, boldly travels into the relatively unexplored malevolent terrain of free doom, space/noise punk, and darkly dubbed-out library/soundtrack grooves (call it 70's crooked-cop show/freak-funk, if you must). This is all capped off with a sidelong, (beat of the) earth-harvesting modal exploration of synthed-out kraut-throb. With new bassist Rob Rodak (Dead Feathers) aboard, and guests like sax-skronk legend Taralie Peterson (Spires That in the Sunset Rise), flautist Sara Gossett (Spiral Galaxy), and synth lord Will MacLean (Protovulcan), new influences have seeped into PCWS's dystopian vision. The Syndicate have opened for revered deities like Nik Turner, Loop, Simply Saucer, Chrome, and Josefus; but now a more diverse and groovy array of past underground sounds like Skin Alley, Sound of Imker, Here and Now, Mann/Sharrock, Black Sun Ensemble, Parson Sound, and Schizo have influenced PCWS's journey. Recorded by Eric Block (Rhys Chatham, Sick Gazelle) of Rec Rooms studios, and mastered by Monster Magnet/Desert Sessions guitar god JP McBain, the mind-fry level is set to 11 ½ on Space Alley!"

ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN Evergreen (25 Year Anniversary Edition) 2CD
In 1997, after a lengthy hiatus, Echo & The Bunnymen returned to the fore with Evergreen, revealing the brighter side of the band, and standing up with any of their earlier work. The self-produced album was recorded at The Doghouse in Henley-On-Thames with additional strings, horns, and vocal arrangements recorded at Abbey Road. The album saw the band rightfully return to the UK album charts at #8, with three singles ("Nothing Lasts Forever", "I Want to Be There (When You Come)", and "Don't Let It Get You Down") entering the UK top 50. "Nothing Lasts Forever" (with backing vocals and tambourine by Liam Gallagher) has grown to become one of the band's most enduring and well-loved songs -- a UK Top 10 and a fan favorite to this day. BASHO, ROBBIE Bouquet LP
"Robbie Basho's 13th album is now available on vinyl.. Remastered from the original master recording, it has never sounded better. Robbie Basho's innovative pieces for the steel-string acoustic guitar incorporated American, European, and Eastern influences, while his unique voice appeared to emanate from another world. Along with John Fahey and Leo Kottke, Basho was a part of the triumvirate of guitarists on the legendary Takoma Records, and one of the foremost proponents of elevating the steel-string acoustic guitar to the level of a concert instrument. In his brief and troubled life, he laid the foundations for radical changes to the musical landscape of America during the 1960s and '70s but reaped little more than a sparse (if fervent) following during his lifetime. Almost 40 years since its original issue on cassette, Basho's 13th album Bouquet is available on vinyl. Affording us a greater insight into his remarkable vision, this long-awaited release is a critical piece of the puzzle that was Robbie Basho. With lyrical themes traversing famous mystics and arcane symbols, Basho's conceptual focus on Bouquet roves through Catholic, Sufic, Hopi, and otherwise nebulous terrain in search of the choicest blooms, while his approach to composition sees him veering ever further from the long-form instrumentalist of earlier days, becoming something of a troubadour. Remastered from the original master recording (discovered during the production of Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho), it has never sounded better. The 24-page booklet includes rare photos and images from Basho's illustrated songbook, as well as texts from Glenn Jones, Henry Kaiser and others. Bonus tracks include an epic 13-minute solo version of 'Land of Our Fathers'."

TAPE Rideau LP
Reissue of the third album by Swedish trio Tape, originally released in 2005. First time on vinyl. On, Rideau, made their great leap forward. Released on Häpna, following two albums of pastoral folk meets electronica, Rideau saw the trio of Andreas and Johan Berthling, and Tomas Hallonsten, working with an outside producer, Marcus Schmickler (Pluramon). On Rideau, Tape's music opened out considerably, embracing traditional minimalism, and luscious melodicism. Now, seventeen years later, Rideau has a new home with Morr Music. Rideau sits neatly with Morr Music's catalog yet it feels contemporary, suggesting the creative discoveries made by the trio have ongoing resonance; their elliptical poetry echoes through recent music from the likes of Tara Clerkin Trio, and Tape's sometime collaborators, Tenniscoats. While they had previously recorded their albums in rural Sweden, for Rideau, the trio decamped to Schmickler's Piethopraxis Studio in Cologne. The creative space that Schmickler carved out for the group allowed them to explore this new material to its fullest. You can hear Schmickler's influence at an almost molecular level -- Tape had never sounded quite so graceful and assured with their compositions. Rideau represents a collective exhalation for Tape, with the trio exploring more involved, longer pieces, which situates them in yet broader musical contexts. There are clear connections with the history of minimalism, for example, via the repeating organ phrase of "Sunrefrain", and the insistent piano arpeggio of "A Spire", which builds into a Reich-ian dream song, with sensuous electronics and glinting vibraphone dappling abstract shapes across the song's stretched canvas. Reflecting on Tape's essence, Schmickler isolates their "uncompromised ethos, caring about small details." This echoes most radically through the twilight environment of "Long Lost Engine", which sets the listener adrift on impossibly radiant drones, while a gentle, almost Feldman-esque melody plays out over the song's surface. It's followed by the reissue's extra track, Japanese electronica quartet Minamo's remix of "Roulette", a connection that would lead to a Minamo/Tape collaborative album, Birds Of A Feather (2007). For now, though, here is the gorgeous, penumbral abstraction of Rideau, an album of whispers and clues, quiet moments and grand gestures, reintroduced to a welcoming world. Includes printed inner and download code; edition of 500.

AROMA DI AMORE Zwarte Doos 6LP BOX/7"
Comprehensive box-set of six LPs/EPs and Aroma Di Amore first rare 7". Aroma Di Amore is/was Belgian's premier cult band. Since the early eighties ADA innovatively combined electronics with rock. With a mix of razor-sharp Flemish lyrics and unconventional song structures the group earned a cult status in Belgium and abroad. 40 years later they conclude their career with a few last concerts and a vinyl box set spanning the years 1983-1987. Frontman Jos Verlooy adopted the stage name Elvis Peeters. His companion Gerry Vergult -- who very much determines the sound with his metallic riffs, somewhat indebted to Jean-Marie Aerts -- adopts the stage name Fred Angst. On a bed of post-punk and cold wave (Joy Division, Wire and Sisters of Mercy are the main influences), they initially let out playful, minimalist, and nonsensical slogans such as "Doe De Mafia" (1982) and "Gorilla Dans De Samba" (1983). Later on, the tone becomes more serious, although Peeters's choice of words continues to show a penchant for absurdism and sarcasm. In the 1980s, an arms race is underway. When the Belgian government decides to install nuclear missiles in 1981, Aroma di Amore asks for one minute of silence in the hall during performances. In Lauwe Oorlog (1983), Peeters exposes the core of his unrest. In 1984 Aroma releases Koude Oorlog on the new and independent Brussels label Play It Again Sam. Encouraged by modest success in the alternative circuits, the group returns to the studio for a 12" single. With new group member Frits De Cauter on sax, they record "Voor De Dood". To this day, "Voor De Dood" remains the most popular AdA song. AdA goes to the Netherlands to record their next album, De Sfeer Van Grote Dagen. The people from Nasmak have built a new studio in Eindhoven and one of the members, Theo Van Eenbergen (later Henry Rollins), will be the producer. De Sfeer Van Grote Dagen is the group's most adventurous album. PIAS proposes to recruit Chris Reed of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and record a new single with him. "Zonder Omzien" is recorded at the prestigious Pyramid Studio. However, PIAS is waiting to release the album, and in the meantime, AdA is recording a number of extra tracks with producer Ludo Camberlin, including "Koekoek In De Stad". Towards the end of the year, Lo and Elvis travel to Africa for a few months and as a result the group comes to a standstill. In this period, Zonder Omzien is released. At the beginning of 1986, Peeters and Meulen return, and Andrea Smits leaves the group. Luc Pillards is hired as a replacement, and when Ludo Camberlin presents himself as a new label boss and producer (Anything But Records), they start recording their first full album for the label. Harde Feiten kicks in immediately, and the group is back up to cruising speed. At the beginning of 1987 the recordings for the second album start, this time in a production by Peeters and Angst themselves. Shortly after the shooting, AdA goes to Switzerland for a short but successful tour, with Men 2nd and Cas & Organized Crime as support act. Koudvuur is published in the autumn and considered to be their strongest record so far by the group, the reactions are rather low. Both the reviews in the press and the sales are disappointing and put a damper on the joy.

ANADOL Felicita LP
Limited 2022 repress. "Whether it is traditional or contemporary, we need to be authentic," says Go?zen Atila who performs as Anadol. "I don't claim that I am authentic, but this is what I want to achieve." A sense of authentic exploration, introspection, and celebration coats every inch of Anadol's latest album. After 2019's Uzun Havalar (PING 065LP), the Turkish artist returns with an album that continues to explore a variety of deeply embedded musical traditions while also hurtling into new terrain. The music and influences -- as well as the history, culture, and geography behind them -- that make up Atila as an artist all coalesce to create something entirely new. The result is something that is simultaneously exploring history and tradition, while harnessing innovative modern sounds and techniques. "If there is any tradition I am somehow connected to, or influenced by, then it's multi-genres," she says. "Such as Turkish Pop and Arabesk music from this country where I grew up. There is a connection to folk and also French pop or Flamenco, Middle Eastern melodies and orchestration, Greek adaptations, Kenny G. solos, American guitars." This can be heard on Felicita, not in as much as you can link up the influences directly but in the way it glides across genres, eschewing convention and predictability along the way, to result in a kaleidoscopic experience. For the album, Atila found a talented roster of jazz musicians in Istanbul who she recorded on top of her synth productions and field recordings. Soon enough saxophone, drums, and strings began to stack up against preset drum loops from vintage organs. It's a record where woozy psychedelic excursions bleed into dreamy synth lines, immersive ambience, and the occasionally disconcerting yet incredibly tactile use of field recordings. Felicita translates as "happiness" and this album is something that explores the complexities of such an emotion. "I did not name the album like this because I just wanted to call it happiness," Atila says. "A song like 'Felicita Lale' is a sad and confused song about a female character who can't get out of bed. It's a funny rumination, in her thoughts, saying to get up and lie down repeatedly. At some point the lyrics say: 'hep agla, felicita', meaning: 'Cry all the time, Felicita'. Like she is talking to happiness itself and telling it to cry. So it is not about happiness, it is more about the concept of happiness which can be very sad."

"Goodbye, Asshole is the first studio album by San Francisco scuzz-wave merchants Fuckwolf -- it's a rat's nest of deep grooves, lost '70s rock riff intentions and art punk damage. These conundrums of time inform Goodbye, Asshole, but they are hardly romanticized in its music. The band, Eric Park (bass, vocals), Simon Phillips (drums) and Tomo Yasuda (guitar) sound blazing and scuzzy, a tight low-fi energy blasted onto tape at renowned Bay Area indie studios summarizing the last twenty years of San Francisco's wild artistic soul -- one that is now hard to find much evidence of in the city itself, but impossible to miss in the band's sound. Fans of OSEES, Pink Fairies, late '70s NYC, Emotional Rescue-era Stones, trashy post-punk dub and solvent-huffing rejoice!"

CHAUVEAU/PIERRE-YVES MACE, SYLVAIN L'Effet Rebond (Version Silicium/Version Iridium) 2CD
L'effet Rebond is not one album but two. Two parallel albums sharing the same title. One by Pierre-Yves Macé, the other by Sylvain Chauveau -- two friends and regular collaborators for nearly twenty years. Both works come from the same original material: a few tracks of guitar, piano, harmonium, and vocals, initially recorded by Chauveau. The lyrics (in French, English, Japanese) are very short poems by or quotations from e.e. cummings, Thelonious Monk, John Cage, Basho, cult tennis player John McEnroe, Carla Demierre, Aram Saroyan, Joseph Guglielmi, and painter Philip Guston. From this common material, each of the two composers has built his own edifice, choosing the elements he keeps, the ones he abandons, adding little by little his own instruments, structures and ideas. In the end, two distinct and autonomous opuses are born. Double-CD; digipack inside a slipcase."Version Iridium": Pierre-Yves Macé has allowed himself to be guided by his long-standing obsessions: hybridization of genres and formats, balance between lyricism and formalism, intersection of chamber instrumental writing and chiseled electronics. But this time he pushes his penchant for sobriety further than ever. Whether it is a song-haiku, a miniature for piano or a long repetitive and rhythmic piece, the simplicity is at the service of the clarity of the ideas and the beauty of the timbres -- Maitane Sebastiàn's cello or Cédric Jullion's bass flute in mind."Version Silicium": Sylvain Chauveau has surrounded himself with his friends Peter Broderick (backing vocals), Machinefabriek (electronic processing), Lucille Calmel (field recordings), Romke Kleefstra (electric guitar), and Rainier Lericolais (electronic sounds) in order to develop more than ever his love of repetition and the ultra-short format. Here, the pieces often last only the time of a breath, of a few heartbeats. A musical form rarely explored in any musical genre, but one that Chauveau has been fond of since his early days and whose quintessence he seeks here.

OISEAUX-TEMPETE What On Earth (Que Diable) CD
With their sixth studio album, Oiseaux-Tempête unveils a new facet of its mythology through a dense work that carries darkness towards the light of day, that rumbles, calms down and warms up again. Like the silhouette of a lighthouse that reveals itself as its torch rises and shines, the powerful beauty of What On Earth (Que Diable) radiates into an expanding musical cosmos. From the mammoth riffs of "Partout Le Feu", progressively thickened by explosive sound textures and sirens ringing the alarm, you levitate on "Terminal Velocity", a minimalist interlude with a crepuscular feel that is jostled by the hypnotic pulsations of "Voodoo Spinning" and then the call of the dungeon "The Crying Eye - I Forget", an electro mystical trance that deploys its philters in a troubled moat haunted by the psalmodies of Radwan Ghazi Moumneh. The tempo speeds up in "A Man Alone in a One Man Poem", a meeting of body and mind, of mechanical energy and burning breath where the spoken word of G.W.Sok sneaks in, before the pastoral crossing of "Waldgänger" and its forest of electronic chimeras."... At the center of this project, which blurs lines and genres, the duo turned trio of multi-instrumentalists Frédéric D. Oberland, Stéphane Pigneul, and Mondkopf have been building dialogues between their own reality, their vocabulary, and those of fellow travelers met all around the surface of the world. From their Mediterranean trilogy to their foray into Canada with the explosive From Somewhere Invisible, deeply instinctive albums shrouded in mystery take shape, in parallel with feverish and incendiary live performances, punk in their urgency to tell the world by blasting the boundaries of space and time. After having signed the soundtrack of the bewitching Tunisian film Tlamess (Sortilège) by Ala Eddine Slim in 2020, Oiseaux-Tempête immerses us with What On Earth (Que Diable) in a collapsed future. A psychedelic/psychological roadmap, the album gathers around Frédéric D. Oberland, Stéphane Pigneul, Mondkopf and Jean-Michel Pirès (Bruit Noir), the voices of Ben Shemie (SUUNS), G.W.Sok, Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (Jerusalem In My Heart) or the electric strings of Jessica Moss (Thee Silver Mt. Zion). If the planetary reality of 2022 looks like a bad spin-off of a pre/post-apocalyptic series, this new record invites us to another kind of anticipative present where the only weapons are poems chanted against the wind. Ben Shemie opens the projection on 'Black Elephant' and sets the tone for this magnetic dance . . . Drum machines, analog synths, percussions, guitars, mellotron, flute, saxophone, vocals, rhodes, piano, violin and electric buzuk come to life in a sort of disaster aesthetic, pushing back the walls of the decor, against the current of any calibrated music." --Alice Butterlin

SIDHARTA, OTTO Kajang LP
Previously unreleased music by Otto Sidharta, pioneer of Indonesian electronic music. Inspired by Indonesia's multifarious styles of traditional music, that he tries to preserve, the four pieces on Kajang express a contemplation of the self. Otto Sidharta loves to travel, everywhere within Indonesia, in order to collect almost any environmental tones and harmonies he can gather, as an endless source of composition. He is also deeply inspired by Indonesia's multifarious styles of traditional music, that he tries to preserve, as in some remote places, they keep their own tradition very strongly. What really interests Sidharta is musicians not interacting with other kinds of music, as in those deep villages, where one might find sounds that feel like very "natural". It results in works expressing Sidharta's personal impression from their music: "I just use my own feeling, with no calculation", not using the tribals motif or style. Kajang is the name of a tribal people living in the south of Sulawesi, a giant island in eastern Indonesia, a closed community, that Sidharta visited twice: "They cut off their communication with the outside world. They live in a very traditional way and try to avoid any new development in culture that might impact their way of life." Sidharta's previous album collected early pieces under the title Indonesian Electronic Music 1979-92, released on Sub Rosa in 2017 (SR 452CD). Kajang gathers a quartet of compositions from 2015 to 2020. White vinyl.

TOOP + PETER CUSACK + STEVE BERESFORD + TERRY DAY, DAVID Alterations LP
Never released before recordings from Logos Foundation live sessions at Logos Foundation, Gent, Belgium on January 3, 1981. "The music is free-improvisation -- that is we make our music co-operatively while playing: by listening, reacting, throwing in new ideas, not by following preplanned schemes. At its simplest the group's intention can be said to be to play together as well as possible and to enjoy ourselves while doing so. We are very interested in the result and intend that the audience is as well. As well as the musicians reacting to each other the music itself is pretty reactive to context. In other words, room acoustics, background noise, audience response have a strong effect on what happens. This is particularly true of the audience. We have done performances where conversation has broken out with some audience members. There is much to see as well as hear -- this is partly to do with the instruments. Together Terry, Steve and David have hundreds, all sizes, all sorts, most colors. They completely cover the floor. Many of these are non-western. The wide range of instruments means that an extremely broad sound spectrum is covered, from sudden bangs to very quiet low notes, from squeaks to normal guitar sounds. This is what fixes the overall group sound." Personnel: David Toop - flute, home-made reeds, percussion; Peter Cusack - guitar; Steve Beresford - piano, small instruments; Terry Day - percussion, home-made reeds.Logos Foundation: Belgium Flanders' unique professional organization for the promotion of new music and audio-related arts by means of new music production, concerts, performances, composition, technological research and other activities related to contemporary music. This organization has been founded in 1968 by Godfried-Willem Raes.

SPACEMEN 3 Dreamweapon 2LP
2022 repress. "August 1988, Spacemen 3 embark on one of the strangest events in the band's already strange history. Billed as 'An Evening Of Contemporary Sitar Music' (although consciously omitting the sitar), the group would play in the foyer of Watermans Arts Centre in Brentford, Middlesex to a largely unsuspecting and unsympathetic audience waiting to take their seats for Wim Wenders' film Wings Of Desire. Spacemen 3's proceeding set, forty-five minutes of repetitive drone-like guitar riffs, could be seen as the 'Sweet Sister Ray' of '80s Britain. Their signature sound is at once recognizable and disorienting -- pointing as much to the hypnotic minimalism of La Monte Young as to a future shoegaze constituency. On this double LP reissue, Dreamweapon is augmented by studio sessions and rehearsal tapes from 1987 that would lead up to the recording of Spacemen 3's classic Playing With Fire album. 'Spacemen Jam,' featuring Sonic Boom and Jason Pierce on dual guitar, is a side-long mediation on delicate textures and psychedelic effects. Includes download card and new insert with liner notes by Will Carruthers."

CARAMBOLAGE Carambolage LP
2022 repress; LP version, Carambolage never set out to be a "girl band" but they were one of the first German new wave bands whose members were all female. The punk alliance comprising Britta Neander, Elfie-Esther Steitz and Angie Olbrich emerged organically from the environs of Ton Steine Scherben, friends united by a common interest in musical experimentation. Britta's passion for the drums ignited in 1974 in Fresenhagen, North Frisia, where she played percussion for Ton Steine Scherben. R.P.S. Lanrue's little sister Elfie-Esther was an obvious candidate. Angie, a child from the streets who joined the commune in 1972, completed the line-up. Carambolage surfed on their very own "North Frisian Wave" -- an epithet dreamed up for their distinctive sound. Shortly before her death in 2004, Britta was interviewed by music journalist Tine Plesch and described how the "girls gang" gave them the freedom to experiment and come up with "these really funny, filthy lyrics". There is a childish, subversive charm to the songs, emboldened by the realization that "we could fool around as much as we wanted." Their sound was not the only aspect of the group which resulted from experimental tinkering. Keen to have their own space, away from a male-dominated environment, they used cardboard and carpets to build their own practice room inside an old grain silo. With the first demo tapes in circulation, Burkhardt "Zensor" Seiler organized a gig for Carambolage in the hip Kreuzberg club SO36. At a time when anything that could be labelled "Neuen Deutschen Welle" (German New Wave) was stamped accordingly, the trio played by their own rules. The eponymous debut album Carambolage, produced by Rio Reiser and R.P.S. Lanrue in the summer of 1980 and released on the Scherben label David Volksmund Produktion, could not be constrained by NDW marketing concepts. Instead, the disc was defined by its "colossal, inventive sound" which fed on Elfie's curiously autodidactic "Fantasiegriffen" guitar style and her "Fresenhagen sparrow" voice, counter-balanced by Angie's organ and inimitable basslines and energized by Britta's relentless drumming. Backed by quirky organ and ragged drums, Elfie spits her lyrics with emphatic simplicity. Once her words are in your head, they stay there. Tracks like "Die Farbe war Mord" hint at a sense of feminist awareness. Carambolage may not have coined the phrase, but "lipstick feminism" became a thing, consciously playing with feminine clichés and hammering them home in performative fashion, rather than boxing them off. Towards the end of the record, vocals and sound are transcended in the monotone shimmer of "22 rue Chenoise".

GARRIE, NICK Summer Nights (The Lost Portuguese Session) CD
Nick Garrie was discovered in the late '60s while busking in the South of France as a backpacker. His legendary album The Nightmare Of J.B. Stanislas (TR 437CD/LP) was to be released in 1969 on the no less legendary French label Disc'Az. However, due to the suicide of the label's founder Lucien Morisse, only about 100 copies of this psych pop/soft rock masterpiece came into circulation. A cult album in the truest sense of the word which has been re-released several times, and rightly so. After that Garrie finished his studies and worked as a teacher, ski instructor, and owned a hot air balloon company as well. Gradually, a new generation of music fans and musicians came to appreciate Garrie's work, he was collaborating with the likes of Duglas T. Stewart (BMX Bandits), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Francis McDonald (Teenage Fanclub), and Gary Olson (The Ladybug Transistor) and releasing critically acclaimed albums in recent years. The latest find from the Nick Garrie cosmos is a session he recorded in Portugal at the beginning of the millennium: Summer Nights: The Lost Portuguese Session.Nick about these recordings: "'Love In My Eyes'turned out to be our wedding song followed by three beautiful children. Of course, the music stopped. I was too busy with kids and working at my own balloon business. And then one summer we went to a lovely village in North Portugal where we picked tomatoes from the field. One night I went out to a '60s type bodega run by a fierce 80 year old with a big stick. He was watching me watch a guitarist and asked me if I played 'a little'. He pulled out a guitar from under the counter and I sang 'Deeper Tones of Blue' and I was home for the first time since I recorded Stanislas all those years ago. Sure enough someone asked me if I'd like to make a record and I said yes provided we have the Portuguese guitar which I'd fallen in love with. We recorded on the top floor of a block of flats with the local bus rattling round the corner. I slept on a bench and when we finished, I took everybody out for dinner . . . Well, the album went nowhere and lay on my shelf for 20 years until someone wrote in asking for it. I listened and loved that Portuguese guitar all over again..."

BROTZMANN/HAN BENNINK, PETER Schwarzwaldfahrt CD/BK
Schwarzwaldfahrt is a magical document of a moment out of time, a moment when the saxophone player Peter Brötzmann and percussionist Han Bennink made a journey deep into the heart of the Black Forest with early portable recording equipment and cameras. The recordings that they made there were released as the Schwarzwaldfahrt album by FMP in 1977 and it remains a free music classic, recorded completely in the open air, with Bennink and Brötzmann duetting with the birds, playing in the water, drumming on great natural xylophones made of logs and catching the sounds of airplanes strafing the skies. It is a music of eternal expansion, of elemental communion. This new book comes with the original recordings on a CD and is assembled round a treasure trove of newly discovered photographs taken during the trip by both Brötzmann and Bennink -- photographs of each other, of their lodgings, of their ritual communions, of their route into, and out of the forest. "It's so lonely, this music, these two friends, making music on their own, in all of this space, and back of time, now, too, a document of a world that seems less populated -- by people, by ideas, by demands, by the tyranny of modern time, itself." --pre-liminal poetic text by David Keenan Peter Brötzmann & Han Bennink: e-flat clarinet, b-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, birdcalls, viola, banjo, cymbals, wood, trees, sand, land, water, air. 120 page book; 20x20cm; edition of 1000.
