DOG FACED HERMANS Those Deep Buds LP
2023 repress. "Alternative Tentacles presents a long-awaited vinyl reissue of the out-of-print 1994 album Those Deep Buds by legendary post-punk skronkmeisters Dog Faced Hermans. This is a one-time LP pressing, on ebony vinyl, limited to 1000 copies. Some members carry on today as The Ex, still touring and recording." "... the group has the same questing spirit as bands like Wire, the Slits, or the Raincoats, but rather than simply recreating the work of those leaders of U.K. post-punk, the Hermans doggedly pursue their own distinct muse. Hints of Krautrock also crop up, both in trancy rhythms ? and in the sudden shifts and stops in the music at many points." --AllMusic "Those Deep Buds, the band's final studio statement to date, is its masterpiece, an unbelievably powerful and resilient record with some of the best lyrics to ever appear on a rock album." --Trouser Press

EAT, THE It's Not The Eat, It's The Humidity 2LP
2023 repress. "The Alternative Tentacles 'Reissues Of Necessity' is back! We've hooked another live one from the swirling depths of the most obscure, desirable, and just plain deranged. Like many early punk pioneers The Eat operated in a near-total vacuum. This time in that infamous cesspool of clueless retirees and moronic sun worshippers known as South Florida. Their classic 7"s were rare and sought after from the moment they came out, distribution was nil, most were given away at shows and crushed on the spot, some even wound up lining parrot cages. As a result, Communist Radio and God Punishes The Eat are some of the most sought after and obscenely expensive Killed By Death items on eBay. Th e band's angle on the world has a lot to do with this. Political concerns like 'Communist Radio', 'Nut Cops', 'Kneecappin' and 'Nixon's Binoculars.' Environmental awareness like 'Manatee Smacker,' 'M-80 Ant Death' and 'Living Like a Pig', and numerous celebrations of that seedy Florida lifestyle like 'Catholic Love', 'Silly Drug Songs', 'Money for the Police' and 'Psychotic McHale's Navy.' The Eat reappeared sporadically clear through the mid-90s, yet still seemed unaware how wide their cult and notoriety had spread, especially among people who've never actually heard them. So now everyone can! Both early 7"s are here, the dropouts in the five God Punishes songs fixed up at last, followed by the entire Scattered Wahoo Action cassette album and all the unreleased songs from their aborted Hialeah album that was chopped down to their third and final 7". Sound is top-floor melodic punk 'n' roll, sort of a sped-up Real Kids with rock-bottom Angry Samoans-style lyrics. Disc one's a whopping 30+ studio tracks, many never before released. But that's not all folks. The CD version comes with a bonus live disc with two dozen more songs and many a crude rude remark from band to audience."

WARE, DAVID S. Birth of a Being (Expanded) 2CD
2023 repress. "Birth Of A Being (Expanded) presents the essential first studio recordings by incomparable jazz saxophonist David S. Ware as a bandleader. Recorded in New York, April 1977, the first disc features material originally released on LP by the Swiss label, hat Hut Records -- out of print for over 30 years. The second disc features a full additional album of top-shelf material from those same sessions that have never been released in any form. This definitive edition was sourced from the original analog 8-track tapes, and was newly mixed & mastered in 2015. Crucial material. Stunning performances & fidelity. Ware's band here, featuring Cooper-Moore on piano and Marc Edwards on drums, was known as Apogee. This long-standing & incessantly active collective trio formed in Boston (Ware attended college there) in 1970, relocating to NYC in the early 70s to create their own space within the jazz loft scene of the time. In 1973 they were invited by Sonny Rollins to open for him at the Village Vanguard. Not long after arriving in NYC, Ware began performing extensively with Andrew Cyrille's group Maono, and, together with Marc Edwards, joined the Cecil Taylor Unit. In 1977, at Ware's request, Apogee reconvened to document their essence in a proper studio setting. Birth Of A Being could not be a more perfect title for these recordings, as it was here that David S. Ware's concepts for jazz ensemble were first elucidated; concepts that would further blossom within the legendary David S. Ware Quartet which he launched a decade after the initial release of this work. Birth features Ware's compositions & the mesh of Apogee's deep foundation of collective synergy with his vision at time of recording. Exceptional clarity, control, and utter logic in elocution; with intent to get to the breathing heart of music itself. The tenderness and intensity of feeling on full display in all of his work here is humbling. This 2CD set is the fitting first in a planned series of David S. Ware archival releases on AUM Fidelity; its release date coincides with the 66th anniversary of his birth (November 7). First edition packaged in deluxe 8-panel digipak."

PARKER QUARTETS, WILLIAM Meditation / Resurrection 2CD
2023 repress. "Meditation / Resurrection is a double-album presenting a bounty of beautiful new William Parker compositions performed by two of his flagship ensembles, the Quartet -&- In Order To Survive. It was recorded & mixed live during a one-day studio session in late 2016. With the tone of the pieces & performances reflecting our current moment, this is Parker & the groups' follow-up to 2013's epic Wood Flute Songs box (2013). At the core of both groups is Parker's foundational bass together with rhythm twin, drummer Hamid Drake. Their partnership -- two decades deep now -- is one of the greatest in the history of drums & bass. Alto saxophonist Rob Brown -- a supremely gifted improviser, as is every musician here -- is likewise present throughout. Pianist Cooper-Moore features on album/CD2. He has been a very significant catalyst in the world of creative music for over 40 years. As William writes in the notes, 'Cooper-Moore is one of the special people who speaks and plays from the heart all the time with power and grace. If my music has had any success in last 20 years it is because he has been a major inspiration and contributor.' Cooper-Moore will be the Lifetime Achievement Honoree at the 2017 edition of the Vision Festival, NYC. Trumpeter Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson appears on album/CD1. Hailing from Oklahoma City, and a resident of Switzerland since 1994, he is a major figure in his own right as a composer of modern classical and world music, and is well-versed in the language of blues, jazz and improvisation. From the liner notes, 'Jalalu is always able to transform any music situation into a magical experience.' William Parker's exceptional gift as a composer of beautiful melodies and infectious rhythms have long been intrinsic to his art, and it has always been on full display in the work of the quartets featured here. Being that these groups are among the highest caliber jazz bands of our time, Parker's luminous compositions are brought to blossom into vibrant kaleidoscopes of sound. Packaged in deluxe 8-panel digipak with extensive notes by William Parker on the music and more."

MBULU, LETTA In The Music... The Village Never Ends LP

Featuring the enormous "Nomalizo", it's a record that aficionados around the world have been waiting many years for. GUERRERO, TOMMY Soul Food Taqueria 2LP
2023 repress. Be With Records present a reissue of Tommy Guerrero's Soul Food Taqueria, originally released in 2003. It's rare that a certain sound is entirely an artist's own. Although undeniably a stew of impeccable influences -- from blues to folk to Latin to dusty funk, soul and hip-hop -- one cannot hear a Tommy Guerrero song without immediately recognizing it as his -- and his only. The cult skater from San Francisco is globally renowned as one of the original members of the legendary "Bones Brigade" team. And as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, his laid-back soul is beloved by all who've basked in its blissful glow. His albums that surfaced on Mo Wax at the turn of the century have been treasured since their release and it's two of his most vital LPs. The originals were quietly pressed on to a single piece of vinyl, so Be With Records worked closely with Tommy to offer fresh, limited editions. Soul Food Taqueria continued Guerrero's guitar soul but represented a step forward with its polished production and greater complexity of instrumentation. Denied the promotion it deserved upon release, it flew under the radar. It is now the most wanted record of his wondrous back catalog. Guerrero's atmospheric touch and subtle guitar provide lush, glimmering pieces of musical texture. Within his spacious compositions, uniquely arranged instruments flourish alongside each other to create a languid soundtrack for halcyon days. From bossa nova, samba, and cumbia rhythms to understated folk, funk and soul grooves, this is another exotic set of mellow gold. Dubby, bass-heavy instrumentals give way to moody folk-soul -- witness "It Gets Heavy", featuring melancholic vocals from Gresham Taylor -- whilst "Thank You MK" is a gentle ode to the tropics, featuring ethereal instrumentation, bright bass and warm, jazzy guitars. The second half in particular contains a number of stunning ambient tracks -- check "Lost Unfound", "Another Brother Gone", and "Broken Blood" -- built around minimalist, laid-back grooves, and detailed guitar orchestrations which wouldn't be out of place on the latest Jonny Nash release. Guerrero closes this flawless set with a moment of true beauty. Restrained and graceful, "Falling Awake" is a pared back piece containing meditative guitar melodies set against melancholic piano arrangements. Remastered. 180 gram vinyl; expanded to double-LP and presented in a gatefold sleeve.

The demo was recorded by Pat Maley at the ABC House in Olympia, WA earlier that year. Bikini Kill played one of their first shows at the house the night before and left their equipment set up to record the demo the next day. SOURDURENT L'Herbe De Detourne CD
Following in the footsteps of L'Espròva, a record released in 2018 and Mantras, a body of long instrumental pieces, Ernest Bergez joins Jacques Puech, Elisa Trebouville, and Loup Uberto to explore the possibilities of a collective energy. L'Herbe De Détourne achieved to catch the vivid energy of the band playing live and combined it with all the sonic explorations the musicians had in mind for a long time, in a completely free state of mind. Themes and songs are wound up in complex rhythmic gears and follow one another in a continuous momentum. Freely digested, the traditional repertoire from the Massif Central mutates and hybridizes with invented forms, inspired by traditional Greek, Persian, and North African music... The result is music that is as much for the ears, the feet, as for the guts and perhaps the heart. It can be a ball, a concert, or a spontaneous ceremony. The Occitan language takes a central place, both as musical material and as a poetic and emotional springboard. Inspired by traditional canvases, a poetic form emerges and makes its way through the old words, passed from mouth to mouth. CD version includes one additional track.

SCHNITZLER & KEN MONTGOMERY, CONRAD CAS-CON II: Konzert in der Erloserkirche, Ost-Berlin, 3.9.1986 CD
As part of Bureau B's series Experimental Electronic Underground GDR, the label make a very special recording available again. The first contact between Conrad Schnitzler, who lived in West Berlin, and Jörg Thomasius, who was based in the east party of the city, came about in the late 1970s. In 1985, Schnitzler visited Thomasius in East Berlin for the first time. In the meantime, Thomasius had released cassettes in the GDR both as a soloist and with his group DFO (Das freie Orchester). The following year, the idea of a joint concert in East Berlin's Erlöserkirche was born. In the GDR, it was not possible to hold events in public without a so-called state "classification". DFO did not have this permit at that time and so public performances were only possible in the context of private or church institutions. In 1982, Schnitzler had already met the New York musician Ken Gen Montgomery, who then regularly performed Schnitzlers's compositions live at various venues worldwide. And so, Schnitzler also produced four cassettes especially for his concert in East Berlin, which were sent by courier from West to East Berlin. On the evening of 3.9.1986, the privately announced and illegal concert took place in the Erlöserkirche in East Berlin/GDR. Montgomery mixed Schnitzler's music live from the tapes. Jörg Thomasius recorded the performance and released the recording in 1987 on his own underground cassette label, Krötenkassetten. Elaborately restored, the original recording is now being released for the first time under the title CAS-CON II. In addition to photos and contemporary documents, it also includes Jörg Thomasius's and Ken Gen Montgomery's written memories of this very special evening.

TIN MAN Arles CD
Renowned acid cosmologist Johannes Auvinen, best known by his alias Tin Man, leaves the club floor behind for a full-length kosmische excursion on Bureau B. Since his first Tin Man records nearly 20 years ago, Auvinen has impelled acid -- in the grand tradition of Phuture and co. -- into shapes and forms heretofore uncharted. He does it again on his latest, Arles, exploring a new realm of impressionistic beauty where pristine, heartfelt melodies dance delicately atop austere motorik rhythms. It's a trip you'll want to take again and again."'Cosmic,' as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, means 'of or relating to the cosmos, the extraterrestrial vastness,' or 'relating to abstract spiritual or metaphysical ideas.' In that light, the first record by Tin Man, aka Johannes Auvinen, on Bureau B is cosmic indeed -- kosmische, if you will. Auvinen is best known for his manifold expressions of acid, in the house and techno sense, that pull your heartstrings as they move your feet. But on Arles, he leaves his dance floor bonafides behind for an album-length journey through inner and outer space. Although Arles isn't built for the club, it's unmistakably a Tin Man record, through and through. (Fret not: adventurous DJs will find much to work with here, naturally.) Auvinen's tender melodies, coaxed from an array of gear including his signature Roland TB-303, dance delicately atop minimal, propulsive rhythms. The form is different, but the fundament remains the same. In the manner of its namesake city, Arles is a portrait of impressionistic beauty. One might call it a turning point for Auvinen, a new direction, but like Auvinen's best work elsewhere, Arles is disarming in its unveiled simplicity. There is no artifice here; this album has nothing to prove, no need to convince the listener of anything. Its elegance is accessible immediately, its grace given freely. And after the record's done, chances are you'll find yourself dropping the needle right back at the beginning. Each listen reveals a new tenor -- each track becomes a new favorite. It's a trip you'll want to take again and again." --Chris Zaldua

AL BILALI SOUDAN Babi CD
Al Bilali Soudan from Timbuktu -- proto punk rock takamba -- this music blows up any preconceptions. An extended family of musicians and griots sought after for generations. Torch-bearers of quintessential Tamasheq music shaped by loops, shouts and the continuous interweave of tehardent and hand percussion. These masters bring youth and energy with lightning-fast mastery of traditional sounds improvised and adapted into the 21st century."The electronic buzz of plugged-in tehardent no longer sounds like the repetition of background music. Now, it starts a fire, fully energized, and with every member at full volume." --Adriane Pontecorvo, PopMatters"We saw the group at Joe's Pub in New York in their first performance on Sept. 14, 2022, and it was exquisite. Al Bilali Soudan's two albums are both highly recommended, but there is nothing like seeing this group live. Hypnotic. Seductive. Mind-blowing. Words fail." --Banning Eyre, Afropop Worldwide"From Timbuktu, as we spell it, four or five male blood relatives shout and expostulate their songs in Tamashek and Songhai ... as they thrash and manipulate their ngoni-like tehardents. Whether conjoining barely coexisting peoples or boosting kind women who are better than they are, both of which they make sound worthy and neither of which they make sound easy, they will get your attention, guaranteed. If you like desert music enough to suspect you've heard it before, you haven't -- Tinariwen are showbiz by comparison, Tamikrest urbane, Tartit cute." --Robert Christgau"A primordial rock album thousands of years before the concept of rock was ever hatched." --Dennis Rozanski, Bluesrag"wild and untamed" --Nigel Williamson, Songlines

Reissue, originally released in 1968. The sole album by cultish psychedelic pop band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. They formed in 1964 and split up after their debut, which appeared on prestigious label Decca in 1968. The line "Is it much too much to ask / Not to hide behind the mask?" from "If You Only Had the Time" was sampled on MF Doom's 2005 song "The Mask". All along with classic blues standard "Tobacco Road" (covered by anyone from The Animals to Brother Jack McDuff via Jefferson Airplane) and contemporary folk number "Morning Dew" (originally penned by Bonnie Dobson) the record shows a series of original numbers verging on the happiest side of jangle-rock with a Nuggets feel all in all.

SUARASAMA Timeline 2LP
"2023 marks the twenty-eighth year of Suarasama; it is also the first year for this reissue of their 2013 masterpiece, Timeline. Irwansyah Harahap and Rithaony Hutajulu, Ethnomusicology lecturers at University of Sumatera Utara, founded Suarasama in 1995 after graduating from the University of Washington Ethnomusicology program. Their music, as expressed on both Timeline and Fajar Di Atas Awan (first issued in 1998, reissued by Drag City in 2008) is hypnotic and joyful; progressing ancient North Sumatran music concepts while referencing the music of adjacent ethnic traditions. 'Dukkha,' for example, was written combining Mandailing and Eastern European musical inspirations. Playing this song on African jembe, Indian sruti box and a European lute known as the mandolin, Suarasama instigate a musical synesthesia in the listener that may honestly earn and truly deserve the title of 'world music.' Throughout Timeline, this is largely due to Irwansyah Harahap's master playing on a variety of stringed instruments including acoustic guitars, Malaysian gambus, mandolin, and an invention of his own design, the saz-guitar. Suarasama's spirit and intention is further elevated by Rithaony Hutajulu's vocals, as well as the skilled rhythm playing of Muhammad Amin and Horas Panjaitan, with additional percussion and singing from several others. The sound of Suarasama is the sound of people engaged in a deeply spiritual, constantly moving recital in open space. Suarasama's conception of Timeline was a multifaceted one from the start. It grew from the concept of hemiola, a metric rhythmic structure involving the juxtaposition of a two-beat time signature upon three-beat time within the same line. The song 'Timeline' itself addresses the history of musical lutes around the world as a means of debuting their custom-made lute, the aforementioned saz-guitar. Finally, and perhaps most significantly, a 'timeline' charts the passage of time, and therefore references Suarasama's musical path over the years of their existence. This is especially significant since founder and leader Irwansyah Harahap passed away in 2021 at the age of 60. As difficult as this loss is for his family, friends and fans alike, the reissue of Timeline is seen as a celebration of the vitality and importance of his music career and journey."

DUBXANNE Popwave in Dub CD
New wave and dub reggae are two children of the same generation, separated at birth, and yet now united in triumph: 15 years after his Echo Beach tribute to British pop pioneers The Police, Dubxanne returns to the roots and infects ten classics of the new wave, post-punk and synth-pop era with the dub-reggae virus. It was the worst of times, it was the best of times. It was... the eighties. Whether Gothic or New Romantic, everyone was fascinated by the possibilities offered by synths and drum machines. One warmed to the unheard-of clarity of the songs that became the anthems of a generation: "Fade to Grey", "Running up that Hill", "Video Killed The Radiostar", "Heart of Glass", some sung by amazingly feminine boys or novel, self-confident pop divas like Kate Bush, Debbie Harry, and Cindy Lauper. At the same time, reggae music is conquering the world from Jamaica, and in the wake of it a revolutionary production practice: dub. Analog at first, but also increasingly digital over the years. The album is the latest in a loose series of dub sets, with which Echo Beach pays a dubwise tribute to the defining sounds of the '80s. Features Berise & Tracy Merano, Sara Lugo, Toogah, Denham, Claire Parsons, and Querbeat. CD version contains six bonus tracks.

EDENA GARDENS Agar CD
On their second album, Edena Gardens manifests itself as a permanent fixture in the El Paraiso catalog. Edena Gardens could have flickered and disappeared in true El Paraiso fashion with a single session album, but the trio emerges with both a new studio album as well as a live album (Live Momentum, EPR 071LP). It's part of the band's DNA: it contains multitudes. There's always a variation or open path, shifting with ease from heady cosmic stoner folk-vibes, to the scorched earth of 12-minute centerpiece, "Veil". "Halcyon Days" opens up a panoramic interlude of beautiful analog warmth, while closer "Crescent Helix" opens in full free-jazz mode, only to travel into an endless crescendo of alt rock proportions rarely found on this side of the '90s. Somehow, Edena Gardens combines the sum of its multifaceted parts in a unified way, perhaps due to Causa Sui drummer Jakob Skøtt's transparent edits and layered treatments. Or perhaps the trio's level of experience and joy of playing simply connects whatever direction they pursue -- Nicklas Sørensen of Papir's glistering guitar lines, backed up by Martin Rude's rumbling baritone guitar strums or solid basslines. It's an album that showcases not only the spontaneous paths taken, but also the vast well of ideas or sounds only implied or briefly touched upon, creating an aggregation of sounds just out of reach. Welcome back to Edena Gardens.

NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY Since Time Is Gravity 2LP
The next chapter of the Natural Information Society is here. Since Time Is Gravity, credited to Natural Information Society Community Ensemble with Ari Brown, presents a newly expanded manifestation of acclaimed composer & multi-instrumentalist Joshua Abrams nearly 15 year, 7 albums- &-counting flagship ensemble. Joining the core NIS of Abrams (guimbri & bass), Lisa Alvarado (harmonium) Mikel Patrick Avery (drums) & Jason Stein (bass clarinet) are Hamid Drake (percussion), Josh Berman & Ben Lamar Gay (cornets), Nick Mazzarella & Mai Sugimoto (alto saxophones & flute), Kara Bershad (harp) & Chicago living legend of the tenor saxophone Ari Brown. Recorded live to tape at Electrical Audio & The Graham Foundation, cover painting Vibratory Cartography: Nepantla, by Lisa Alvarado."Since first developing Natural Information Society in 2010, Joshua Abrams has been gradually expanding the group's conceptual underpinnings, its musical references & the sheer number of the group's members. Its music is, in a sense, an expansive form of minimalism, based in repeated & overlaid rhythmic patterns, ostinatos & modality. Its roots, its scale & its meaning become clearer in time. If time is gravity, it also allows us to carry more. Having begun as fundamentally a rhythm section with Abrams' guimbri at its core, the version here can stretch to a tentet, including six horns. Abrams has been expanding his minimalism gradually, but he has long understood a key to minimalism's potential: the breadth of its roots in the late 1950s & early 1960s, ranging from the dissatisfaction of young European-stream composers with the limitations of serialism to the simultaneous dissatisfaction of jazz musicians with the dense harmonic vocabulary of bop & hard bop. The former began exploring rhythmic complexity & narrow tonal palates in place of harmonic abstraction (Steve Reich's Drumming, Philip Glass' Music with Changing Parts; perhaps above all Terry Riley's In C & his late '60s all-night organ & loop concerts); the later reduced dense chord changes to scales (signally with Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, but rapidly expanding with John Coltrane's vast project). In the 1950s the LP record opened the world with documentation of Asian & African musics, key influences on both minimalists & jazz musicians. If John Coltrane's soprano saxophone suggested the keening shehnai of Bismillah Khan, the instrument was rapidly taken up by two key minimalists, LaMonte Young & Riley, similarly appreciative of its flexible intonation, the same thing that kept it out of big bands. If the guimbri, the North African hide-covered lute that Abrams plays with NIS, involves a rich tradition of hypnotic healing music associated with the Gnawa people, Abrams' music also touches on other musics as well --other depths, memories & healings, different drones, rhythms & modes. As the group expands on Since Time Is Gravity, he has made certain jazz traditions in the same stream more explicit as well. If there is a mystical & elastic quality involved in the experience of time, both in direction & duration, you will catch it here. The parts for the choir of winds expand on the roles of Abrams' guimbri, Mikel Patrick Avery & Hamid Drake's percussion & Lisa Alvarado's harmonium: at times, the winds are almost looping in the tentet version, each hitting a repeating note in turn, at once drone & distinct inflection on temporal sequence. The brilliance of the work resides in Abrams' compositions, the NIS' intuitive execution & in Ari Brown's singular embodiment of the great tenor saxophone tradition, including the oracular genius of Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis, & Yusef Lateef..." --Stuart Broomer, April 2022

HOT PEPPER Spanglish Movement LP
Last copies, reduced price; LP version. Espacial Discos present the first ever, legit vinyl reissue of Hot Pepper's Spanglish Movement, originally released in 1978. This obscure cosmic disco/Balearic/Afro gem from Mexico, originally released as a private pressing in 1978. Hot Pepper was a studio project created by Mexican drummer/producer/arranger Jesús Muñoz "Tilico" who decided to record an album in a disco-funk vein, helped by some of his friends who were top session musicians. Spanglish Movement was the result, written and produced by "Tilico", released in 1978 as a tiny private edition housed in a fabulous Afro cover. Being "Tilico," a giant drummer who appeared on countless recordings and accompanied famous figures like Paul Mauriat and Carl Tjader among many others, you can expect here lots of heavy drums, congas, and percussion, surrounded by crazy space synths, male-female vocals, Latin horns, Afro touches, and occasional fuzz guitar. Four superb long tracks including the cosmic underground club classic, "Ritual Song". Includes insert with liner notes and rare photos.

"This long out-of-print holy grail private press album, originally released by the late Abdul Wadud himself in 1977, is finally being reissued on vinyl. The release date is what would have been his 76th birthday. There really is no easily comparable album in existence. Abdul Wadud used the cello to make music in a way that was never fore-sought for the instrument, and this album was the first physical representation of his genius. Sourced from the only copy of the original master tapes in existence. However, due to severe deterioration of the tape, the vinyl master lacquers were cut from a DSD transfer of the audio tape. Tape restoration and DSD transfer conducted by grammy-award winning mastering engineer Paul Blakemore. Lacquers cut by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at well-made music. Stampers plated with Gotta Groove Records proprietary groove-coated plating technology. Vinyl manufactured by Gotta Groove Records, and packaged in Gotta Groove anti-static dust sleeves. Contains restoration of original jacket artwork with spot gloss treatment, as well as never before-seen photo of Abdul with his children (Raheem and Aisha), along with a digital download code to redeem a high-resolution digital copy of the tape transfer. This reissue was originally sanctioned by Abdul himself. Unfortunately, he passed away on August 10, 2022. SMITH & NANCY ANDREWS, LINDA A Passing Cloud LP
"In 1983, Nancy Andrews and Linda Smith shared a big house in Baltimore with a continuously revolving cast of artists and musicians. It was there the like-minded artists formed their first band, Ceramic Madonna Head (with Plastic Arms), a short-lived project which included housemates Elizabeth Downing and Peggy Bitzer. By the time the lease was up, Smith and Bitzer had decided to move to New York where they would form a new band called The Woods while Andrews and Downing remained in Baltimore and formed a performance art band called Lambs Eat Ivy. While playing guitar in The Woods in the mid-80s Smith purchased her first 4-track cassette recorder and embarked on a pioneering decade of solo, DIY home recording with a series of cassettes and 7-inch records of smart and moody singer-songwriter bedroom pop music. This trailblazing period was recently documented on the Captured Tracks retrospective compilation Till Another Time: 1988-1996. Her band, The Woods, made a record which was shelved for decades but will finally see release in 2023. During this same period Andrews pursued art, animation and filmmaking with occasional forays into music including another short-lived collaboration with Smith called The Gertrudes as well as a 7-inch under the alias Pinky on Harriet Records in 1992. The friends stayed in touch but hadn't worked on a project together in nearly thirty years. In 2020, Smith rediscovered in the back of a drawer some old tapes of Andrews's songs she had recorded for her in the '90s. In the process of digitizing the old recordings she was inspired to reach out and float the idea of a new collaborative recording project with her old friend. A Passing Cloud is the fruit of their rekindled long-distance musical conversation. They began the songwriting process by flipping through Andrews's pulp fiction collection and pulling provocative phrases from the lurid titles and hard-boiled storylines. Then, they set out to create new stories from personal, feminist perspectives. All the songs were composed incrementally by passing tracks back and forth between Maine and Maryland during the late pandemic. A Passing Cloud's lovely and beguiling pop music may be borne out of isolation but it draws one in with a carefully rendered intimacy made possible by decades of artistic collaboration."

LONG TWINS Everyone In Water LP
Hidden Harmony Recordings presents the debut album of Long Twins. Everyone In Water by the KV Hopper and Elizabeth LoPiccolo duo is a collection of delicate avant-pop songs that occupy liminal space between sophisticated songwriting and the eternal charms of warm modular arpeggios, the brilliant voice and flute sonority and blue-sky psychedelia of sequencers, generators, and filters, the merging compositional prowess and experimentation with pop sensibility. Everyone In Water deals with lyrical themes centered around the sense of place and everyday rituals which curve out into an incredibly serene peak of new sincerity. The thirteen songs on the album are a transcendental amalgamation of avant and pop traditions and of organic and electronic compositional structures -- an entire universe of a record blessed with its own beautifully bizarre logic. Die-cut cardboard outer sleeve, color print inner sleeve and poly-liner sleeves; includes color print inserts with album lyrics. 180-gram vinyl; edition of 500 (numbered).KV Hopper is a musician and product designer living in Portland, OR. Originally from El Paso, Texas, during the mid-90s he helped form punk group, At The Drive-In and appeared on the first two releases (Hell Paso and Alfaro Vive Carajo). In 2001, he moved to San Francisco and created an instrumental prog-band, Crime in Choir (featuring Death Grips drummer, Zach Hill, synthesist Jonas Reinhardt, and other contributing artists). In 2019, he began a studio project, Long Twins with collaborations from guitarist, Phil Manely (Trans Am, Life Coach); vocalist, Meryl Press; percussionist, Warren Huegel (Damo Suzuki's Network); and vocalist, flutist, Elizabeth LoPiccolo.Elizabeth LoPiccolo is a musician, film photographer, and performer living in Brooklyn, New York. She has been a member of Xhoir (an offshoot of Colin Self's Xoir), a contributor to the music and performances of Ziemba (René Kladzyk, who takes her band name from her grandmother's maiden name) and a longtime collaborator with her husband, Rhys Ziemba (no relation to René Kladzyk). Most recently Elizabeth has been a contributor of vocals, lyrics, and flute arrangements to the experimental synth tapestries of Long Twins. In her teens and twenties, she joined local bands and learned to write flute parts as a member of Flat Broke Folk, The Cripple Lilies, and You Win Instantly. She learned to sing by making lots of mistakes, many during late night karaoke. Then a speech therapist helped her become more tenderly aware of the voice as a place and as an instrument.

THEE OH SEES Warm Slime (Color Vinyl) LP
"Back in print on new green with orange hi-melt vinyl. The ridiculously prolific Bay Area band Thee Oh Sees are back with another full-length long-player. Warm Slime is guaranteed to please fans of their whacked-out garage/psych/punk jams. Recorded by Sacramento sultan of sound Chris Woodhouse, Warm Slime carries on in the same tradition as the group's previous In The Red release, Help, showcasing their more electrified and rocking side, in comparison to other recent home-recorded releases. The centerpiece is undoubtedly the mind-bending title track, which clocks in at nearly 14 minutes and takes up the entirety of the album's first side. It's a psychedelic epic of 'Inna Gadda Da Vida' proportions! John Dwyer's guitar playing is at its quadra-spazzed best here, and the vocal interplay with Brigid Dawson gives it a B-52s-at-their-least-cheesy-crossed-with-the-Troggs vibe. The results are stunning." "Thee Oh Sees incorporate the oft-referenced Nuggets stuff in a way that feels reverential. With grinding guitars and bah-bah-bah vocals, but with the punk and new-wave elements also at play, they don't feel trite or plagiarized. This is like meat and potatoes prepared by a master chef--totally familiar but utterly delicious." --Pitchfork

FUZZ Fuzz LP
2023 repress; LP version. "Fuzz is Ty Segall (drums/vocals), Charlie Moothart (guitar/vocals) and Roland Cosio (bass). They're heavy rock lifers -- three California bred dudes who have been refining their riffs and getting weird together since high school (which wasn't that long ago, actually). If you are not already aware of Segall, well, what's up? He's one of garage rock's most prolific sons. He said he was going to take it easy this year, but by the time you finish reading this, the onesheet for his next record will have already arrived in your inbox. Moothart plays guitar in The Ty Segall Band and was also a member of The Moonhearts, which included Cosio on guitar. Way back in the early '00s, all three played in the Epsilons. Fuzz was formed a couple years ago as a collaboration between Segall and Moothart, but only recently did the pair have sufficient time to guide the band out of side-project limbo and into a recording studio. Since then, they have released two singles, 'This Time I Got a Reason' (Trouble In Mind) and 'Sleigh Ride' (In The Red). Around the time of the latter, Cosio joined on bass. They are not dabblers or dilettantes. Fuzz flipped through used bins, hard drives and record collections of the world, seeking out the finest weirdo cuts. The band's self-titled debut LP, which was recorded by Chris Woodhouse (Thee Oh Sees, The Intelligence), dives deep, drawing inspiration from the more esoteric reaches of heavy metal pre-history. There are Sabbath and Hendrix nods, obviously, but on 'Sleigh Bells' you might also catch a whiff of UK progressive blues business like The Groundhogs, particularly when the song quits its 10/4-time intro and reboots into fullbore choogle. Maybe you'll even glimpse the ghost of Australian guitar legend/sharpie guru Lobby Lloyde sniffing around 'Raise.' The mood is not light. The songs project a state of perpetual paranoia and eroding mental health. And as it should be, you know? It's a record for the burners."

OTHER:M:OTHER MetaMorph CD
"Other:M:other is a trio from Austria, consisting of Judith Schwarz (extended drums), Jul Dillier (prepared piano) and Arthur Fussy (modular synthesizer). Judith is a drummer and composer and internationally well-known with bands like Chuffdrone, Little Rosies Kindergarten or the duo Hofmaninger/Schwarz. Arthur is a sound designer, composer and engineer. He also works for theatre productions in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Jul describes himself as a sound poet. He works as a solo artist, performer and jazz pianist. Other:M:other's aim is to create a rhythmic symbiosis of sound. Acoustic sounds melt with electronic sounds, percussive impulses grow that take their inspiration equally from experimental music and beat-driven club music. With an unusual line-up, expanded ways of playing their instruments and a free improvisational background the trio manage to react musically to their surroundings. A set by Other:M:other can be a rather experimental affair, but it can also be an hour of dance music. The audience doesn't know what to expect. On their debut album, MetaMorph, you will hear both artistic sides of this outstanding trio, with music that was recorded at three concerts during 2022. Imagine a missing link between free jazz improvisation and club music and you get the idea of what makes this trio so unique! 'Other:M:other sends electric shockwaves to the sound-suffused regions of your core. These three Masters of ceremony luxuriate in their analogue eclectoacoustics as a cerebral trinity. Foetal, amniotic waterflashes lead to wild dances around the maternal maypole, a prenatal dive by Mother Mary into this rhythmically pulsating, primordial infusion.' Mastered by Martin Siewert."

SUTCLIFFE NO MORE Normal CD
"Sutcliffe No More is the follow-up name for the band known as Sutcliffe Jugend. It was founded by Kevin Tomkins in 1982. It started as a power electronics act, quickly gaining a name for itself, before branching out stylistically, creating a distinctive style that drew influence from all manner of genres while keeping true to their roots as a noise act. In its original form Sutcliffe Jugend existed for less than a year before Tomkins stopped the project to join Whitehouse. He reformed the group in 1994 with Paul Taylor who also played on some of the project's early material. The project ended in 2019. They released one album under a new name, Slaves No More, then continued as Sutcliffe No More. While obviously the band's roots lie in noise music and power electronics, and the influence of Whitehouse can still be heard, Sutcliffe No More are now focusing on a more diverse musical approach to accompany Kevin Tomkins' lyrics. Recently, they started to introduce distorted rhythms into their music as well. Normal is the first album that also features Paul Taylor on vocals."

SEBSIBE, KUKU Kuku Sebsibe LP
"Deeply affecting and jewel-like pop songs from the early 1980s by the internationally renowned Ethiopian singer, Kuku Sebsibe. Born in Addis Ababa, she began performing live during high school and was almost immediately a sensation, doing stints in many of the most legendary ensembles of the day, including Roha Band, Wallias Band, and Ibex Band. She cut her first single with the great Alemayehu Eshete (see the two separate Ethiopiques volumes dedicated to him), and recorded her first full-length tape with the Roha Band in 1982, from which the present album is derived. The band's loping bass lines, singing brass, and ethereal organ tones serve to lift Sebsibe's golden voice to celestial heights even as her firm roots in Ethiopian traditional music keep the music terrestrially planted. Her supple melodies twist and glide -- if a lullaby could be said to have power, or a physicality even, then this is something of what it would sound like. Like much of the greatest music, what you find here is that it's capable of enacting two ideas or feelings simultaneously; one of unbridled joy, the other a graceful, haunting melancholy. This is such moving, immediate music from a master singer -- you can just settle along with the momentum of the groove, or give it your full attention to all the layers it's willing to reveal of itself."

WILLIAMS, TONY Play Or Die LP
"Tony Williams certainly counts among those unique drummers in jazz today, whose work has had a lasting influence on styles and still does. At the tender age of 16, saxophonist Jackie McLean brought him to his band in New York. He also made his first recording with McLean. Soon after, aged 17, Williams was already making a splash in the second Miles Davis Quintet. Almost twenty years later, in 1980, on May 30 and 31, Tony Williams went to the Zuckerfabrik recording studio in Stuttgart/Germany, together with Tom Grant (keyboards, synthesizer, he joined this band on the recommendation of Jeff Lorber) and Patrick O'Hearn (bass, synthesizer). In the 1970s and early 1980s, this studio was an illustrious address for audio productions of all kinds. Larry Coryell, Wolfgang Dauner, Stephane Grappeli, Elvin Jones, Martin Kolbe + Ralf Illenberger, Volker Kriegel, Alphonse Mouzon, John Scofield and the United Jazz+Rock Ensemble recorded there, to name just a few. Tony Williams and Peter Schnyder co-produced the recording. The album was recorded in just two days and mixed right there in the studio. This timeless album, released in an edition of only 500 copies, was hardly promoted at the time and may therefore have remained unknown to one or the other. All the better that now for the first time since the release of the Vinyl it is also available on CD, with a significantly improved sound."

BADAWI The Book Of Jinn LP
Ghost Producer aka Badawi (aka Raz Mesinai, aka Bilal ibn Yakub al-Badawi) is a prolific producer and artist whom has been on the forefront of underground experimental jazz and electronic music scenes around the world for over thirty years, with a massive catalog of genre-defying albums. Ghost Producer released his first albums starting in the late '80s under the monikers Psy Co. and Ruff Riddim Productions, selling his cassette tapes in NYC, he produced, on average, at least one album per week since 1988 till present day. One of the twenty or so monikers was "Badawi", later being signed to ROIR Records and releasing the seminal experimental dub, punk albums Bedouin Sound Clash and later The Heretic of Ether on Asphodel. Spending time as a child between Occupied Jerusalem, the West Bank (Balata) and New York City (Rock Steady Park) during the height of the B-Boy era in the '70s and '80s informed Ghost Producer's singular sound of heavy driving Sufi rhythms, sonic experiments, percussion, piano playing and sound design which has connected him to a wide variety of artists ranging from Maryanne Amacher to John Zorn, to added elements of darkness to music by such artists as Hanz Zimmer and rappers Danny Brown and Skepta and Double D, among many others. At age 14, Ghost Producer was discovered by visionary jazz and rock musician, Juma Sultan (Jimi Hendrix) whom later trusted Ghost Producer with producing the archive of over 2000 hours from recordings from "Studio We" and the Free Jazz Loft Movement in NYC in the '60s and '70s. As a composer, he has worked with Kronos Quartet and has had premiers at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Ghost Producer has released several albums on John Zorn's Tzadik label. As a composer for film, he coined the term "score design" to describe his work in conceiving and producing scores for films with particularly demanding needs, working on such films as A Late Quartet, The Fountain, Black Swan, and The Wrestler, Black Hawk Down, and more. In 2014, he was awarded as a fellow in the Sundance Composers Lab. The Book of Jinn, is one of many productions done within the course, featuring players/mentors Juma Sultan (percussion), Chandenie (voice), and Shahzad Ismaily (electric bass), with additional student participation from Adam Culbert and Jonah Sollins (aka Goodnight 1500) on synths and percussion as well, then all remixed and rearranged by Badawi into what you hear here, The Book of Jinn.

SUN RA Saturn XIII 10"
"A limited-edition Sun Ra 10-inch EP cut at 45 RPM. Four tracks, two unreleased. Features artwork by Georgia Hubley (Yo La Tengo), lettering by Archer Prewitt. Mastered by Dave Cooley. 'Just Friends': This live recording was only issued on a rare 1982 Saturn album entitled Just Friends. So few copies of 'Just Friends' were pressed, that this track is almost unknown to Ra fans. This is the first reissue of this track in any format. The location and actual date of the recording are unknown. Recorded 1982, location unknown. 'Just Friends': This is a recording made around 1960 of Sun Ra playing organ in his Chicago apartment while softly singing the song 'Just Friends.' It has not been previously issued in any format. Recorded 1960 at home, Chicago. 'Under the Spell of Love': This live recording was also issued on the rare 1982 Saturn album Just Friends. This is the first reissue of this track in any format. As with the title track on side A, the location and actual date of this performance are unknown. Recorded 1982, location unknown. 'Cherokee': This work was composed by Ray Noble. 'Cherokee' was a 1940s big band standard, and was a big hit for Charlie Barnett. It was also recorded by Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Bud Powell, and many others. This is the only known recording of the title by Sun Ra. There is no information about the date, location, or personnel. It sounds like a home rehearsal, and probably dates from the 1970s. It has not been previously issued in any format."

DORA, DELPHINE As Above, So Below LP
Recital present As Above, So Below, a new album from French multi-instrumentalist Delphine Dora. Over the past decade, from poetry reading, chansons, organ performances, tape compositions and so on, each album in Dora's lush discography feels like a feather from a different bird. A keen ability to defy any singular "sound," always diving to different depths. As Above, So Below centers around mystic piano and voice recordings. In a distinct gothic landscape, each of the nine tracks float into one another. From verdant piano works that revolve like beautifully stretched out miniatures, expanding and bending like shadows across the floor, to foggy vocal arrangements hovering above beds of rural field recordings. Quiet synthesizers crawl in the backdrops, never disturbing the spirit of the piano motions. On the track "Cantique spirituel," Dora, from a cloud of her phantasmal caroling, recites a poem by German author, Novalis (1772-1801). "Blindly we strayed in night's confusion..." This poetic essence is found throughout the album... "gladness and grief alike consume." As Above, So Below was produced and mixed by the British musician Andrew Chalk, whose presence tints the air throughout Dora's album. Chalk ornaments the pieces with additional instrumentation, along with Jean Noël Rebilly playing clarinet. Four panel 12" insert with photographs and poems; edition of 250.

ANDERSEN, ERIC Margrethe Fjorden CD+BLU-RAY
Recital present its first ever Blu-Ray edition, Eric Andersen's Margrethe Fjorden. Produced in 1996 by Fluxus artist Eric Andersen, the citywide Intermedia event included performances from Alice Damas, Willem de Ridder, Larry Miller, and other artists from around the world. Inspired by the mysterious tale of Queen Margrethe the First (1353-1412), the multi-sensory event was comprised of three major themes: Union, Woman, and Faith. Over four hours of video is presented, from a full organ concert held in the Roskilde Cathedral, replete with models on stilts and toy frogs hopping through the pews, to a helicopter "air ballet" dancing over the water at night. The whole town became the stage for the three performance evenings. The immersive handheld footage flows between the circus-like events, navigating the streets, spilling between events. A surreal home-movie quality. The original press release reads: "Margrethe Fjorden is everything; its near and far, quiet and violent. It smells, its wet, burning and at times foreign and disturbing. Often it feels secure and humorous. There will be live sheep, a child birth, a car crash, window-washers, wheelchairs and trekkers. People will unite and separate again. A world of conception where the audience enters another reality..." Also included with the Blu-Ray is a curated audio-CD with six elements from the videos, beginning with the entire Eric Andersen organ concert performed by Yuzuru Hiranaka, and ending with the "A piacere (Fog Drifts Across the Meadow)" by Ib Nørholm and Eric Andersen; a 100+ person choir positioned on the Roskilde Fjord with a solitary amplified flutist performing from a small boat. Blu-Ray discs are region-free data discs (complete with menus), and can play on any BluRay player. Includes 36-page pamphlet, red satin fabric; also includes digital download for audio and private links for streaming the videos online.

CISNEROS, AL Suicide of Judas/Akeldama 7"
"As Al Cisneros continues to move through the dub zone, a journey over a decade in length, his music and production continue to evolve and deepen. The sinew of the bass strings sets the pocket with ever-focused raw and relentless drive, while the rhythm section lays out an elaborate series of movements to roll in perfect accord with its multi-segmented melody. As melodies of the ancient world emerge prayerfully from the mist above the fray, all is right in all of the worlds that we can hope to know. On the 'Akeldama' version, the mixing desk becomes its own instrument."

LOPEZ, BRANDON vilevilevilevilevilevilevilevile CD
"This is the exquisite new solo work by virtuosic bassist/composer Brandon López. vilevilevilevilevilevilevilevile is about perceptions. More pointedly: it is 'less about -a thing- than it is about perceptions of things, questioning those perceptions, and possibly altering perceptions.' On moving to NYC, López immediately began making himself indispensable in many creative music scenes. From New York Philharmonic's David Geffen Hall to the DIY basements of Brooklyn, López has worked extensively beside many luminaries of jazz, classical, poetry, and experimental music. As with all bass players of great skill and commitment through the ages, López has been prolifically active in collaborations because he has been in duly high demand. The Cleveland Review of Books noted: 'This is virtuosity as vocabulary, a total command of texture, subtlety, and a depth that can be reached into.' López is also an improvising composer of estimable gifts. One recent example is his expansive work in duo with equally astonishing drummer Gerald Cleaver; recently incorporated into a trio with Fred Moten, the inimitable poet, theorist, critic, and 2020 MacArthur Fellow. Among the attention paid to their 2022 debut was an '8.0' review in Pitchfork and a 'Best Jazz Albums of 2022' notice by the New York Times. The brawn which Brandon brings to his playing is abundantly clear on stage, and can be viscerally felt as a force coming out of his recordings. The strings & wood frame are wholly resonant when called forth, by muscles well-developed for the purpose by a longtime gravedigger. Yes, López dug many for a strong spell as a young man. It is also abundantly clear that 'brains over brawn' are a key differential. A Puerto Rican kid growing up working class in North Jersey doesn't perform with the New York Philharmonic (as a soloist, no less) without the brains. López has kept busy during these pandemic years, releasing solo works (and other collaborative stealth recordings) via his Bandcamp page and creating live streams on Instagram. vilevilevilevilevilevilevilevile is, however; by his own telling, only his second 'real one' for solo bass -- an album created with forethought towards wider release."

FRIEBE, RICO Word Value Cassette
Cassette version. After 36 years without singing one word, unforeseeable tragedy and its consecutive challenges made Rico Friebe finally find his voice, suddenly and fluently starting to write songs full of intimacy and subtle storytelling -- now presented on his debut singer album, Word Value. Processing the encounter with a special person and the lasting aftermath, all songs are perfused by an emotional sincerity and serenity, dealing with a rise and fall of depression and hope while furthermore exploring forgotten chasms and grievances from his further past. Word Value is tracing an arc as the first of four albums that are deeply connected, based on one another, followed next by the second LP Faces Meets later in 2023. In times of fast rising technology, artificial intelligence, social deconstruction, inflation of language and morality, the most basic and natural human needs haven't ever changed -- re-find them while closing your eyes, opening your soul and putting on Word Value...

CATAPILLA Catapilla LP
2023 repress. Trading Places present a reissue of Catapilla's self-titled album, originally released in 1971. Jazz-infused prog rock act Catapilla began in London in 1970, with saxophonists Robert Calvert (who later worked with Daevid Allen in various Gong spin-off projects) and Hugh Eaglestone, bassist Dave Taylor (of chart-topping pop act Edison Lighthouse, and later active in hard-rock group, Liar), along with drummer Malcolm Frith, guitarist Graham Wilson, and clarinet player/flautist, Thierry Rheinhardt; original vocalist "Lady" Jo Meek quit early (to work with the keyboardist, poet, and science fiction author, Julian Jay Savarin) and was duly replaced by her sister, Anna, whose gutsy gasps gave the band its noteworthy difference, along with the woodwinds and horns. Former Millionaires' bassist Cliff Cooper (who had worked with producer Joe Meek before founding Orange Amplifiers), brought Catapilla to the attention of Black Sabbath's manager, Patrick Meehan, who swiftly got them a contract with Vertigo, Philips's prog subsidiary; this self-titled debut has four freaky tracks, including the side-long closer, "Embryonic Fusion". 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve. CATAPILLA Changes LP
2023 repress; Trading Places present a reissue of Catapilla's Changes, originally released in 1972. Jazz-infused prog-rock act Catapilla began in London in 1970, with saxophonists Robert Calvert and Hugh Eaglestone, bassist Dave Taylor (of pop act Edison Lighthouse), drummer Malcolm Frith, guitarist Graham Wilson, and expressive clarinet player, Thierry Rheinhardt; vocalist Jo Meek was quickly replaced by her sister, Anna, whose gutsy gasps gave the band its noteworthy difference, along with the woodwinds and brass. Former Millionaires' bassist Cliff Cooper brought the group to the attention of Black Sabbath's manager, Patrick Meehan, who got them a contract with Vertigo; like their self-titled debut, second LP Changes has four freaky tracks, but here the band is completely reborn, with bassist Carl Wassard, drummer Brian Hanson, and keyboardist Ralph Rolinson backing Rheinhardt and Meek. Throughout, Rheinhardt's searing sax blows a musical foil to Meek's mercurial vocal moods, drifting between atmospheric interludes and brooding bursts on "Reflections," while "Charing Cross" gets its point across by subjecting Meek's fragmented vocals to heavy delay. A super esoteric and ultra-rare relic from the stranger end of prog. Die-cut sleeve with flap; gatefold sleeve.

ASHIKAWA, SATOSHI Still Way (Wave Notation 2) LP
2023 repress; LP version. 350gsm sleeve with selected UV high gloss varnish. Liner notes by Midori Takada, Satoshi Ashikawa, and Gareth Quinn Redmond. WRWTFWW Records announce the reissue of Satoshi Ashikawa's Still Way (Wave Notation 2). Initially released in 1982 as part of the Wave Notation series (which includes Hiroshi Yoshimura's Music For Nine Postcards), Still Way is, without a doubt, a seminal Japanese environmental/ambient/minimalism album, often mentioned alongside Midori Takada's Through The Looking Glass (1983) (WRWTFWW 018LP, WRWTFWW 019CD/LP) and Hiroshi Yoshimura's Green (1986) as one of the genre's most important pieces. "Like the moment of stillness, after the wind passes through the garden, when the rain stops for a brief second..." Notably inspired by Erik Satie's Furniture Music and Brian Eno's ambient work, Satoshi Ashikawa aimed to compose music "intended to be listened to in a casual manner, as a musical landscape or a sound object -- not something that would stimulate listeners but music that should drift like smoke and become part of the environment." The result is simply phenomenal, subtle minimalism and emotional elegance exquisitely orchestrated by Satoshi Ishikawa and his team consisting of his wife Masami Ashikawa (on flute), Midori Takada (on vibraphone), Yuko Utsumi (on harp), Tomoko Sono (on piano), and Junko Arase (on vibraphone). In conjunction with Still Way, WRWTFWW Records is releasing Laistigh den Ghleo (WRWTFWW 039CD/LP), a companion album by Irish ambient/minimalist composer Gareth Quinn Redmond, inspired by Ashikawa's approach. Liner notes by Midori Takada, Satoshi Ashikawa, and Gareth Quinn Redmond.

EP-4 Lingua Franca-1 LP
2023 restock; LP version; in heavy 350 gram sleeve. WRWTFWW Records present the official reissue of cult album Lingua Franca-1 (originally released in 1983) by groundbreaking Kyoto band EP-4. Straight from the delirious minds of unconventional geniuses Kaoru Sato (who had previously released an album as R.N.A. Organism on legendary Osaka label Vanity Records) and Yuji "Banana" Kawashima, Lingua Franca-1 is a seamless voyage of spellbinding mutant funk grooves, joyful post-punk explorations, synth fantasies, sexy distortions, and fluid cool-no-sweat vocals. Constantly mutating in an almost biological way (similarly to Colored Music's self-titled album (1981)), always mysterious and seductive, sometimes reminiscing of a freaky cross between PiL, Liquid Liquid, David Bowie, and Yello, EP-4's debut is hard to label, although "Debonair Wave" could be a legitimate way to describe this Japan's best-kept-secret of an album. Defying the rules wasn't limited to sonic experimentations for band leader Kaoru Sato. To promote Lingua Franca-1, he and his crew plastered gigantic (illegal) billboards all over Shibuya and Harajuku, announcing performances in four different cities on odd hours of the same day (May 5th, 1983). Other of his notable antics included originally sub-titling the album "Death to the Emperor Showa", causing a controversy (which led to censorship and a title-change), trying to release two albums on the same day without the concerned labels being aware of the plan or, in the R.N.A. Organism days, fooling Vanity Records into believing the demo he sent them came from a foreign band (it worked). Unique personality, unique music!
