WATER DAMAGE In E 2LP
Repressed! "Volume, repetition, volume, repetition, volume and repetition, this is the sonic mantra of Austin, Texas's Water Damage. On their new double album, Water Damage continues to scorch the earth with walls of punishing sound. It's no secret that something truly special can happen to the psyche when you are being pummeled with trance inducing drones, you can transcend time, you might laugh, you might cry but hopefully you look inward, letting a calm wash over you with metric tons of distortion. Water Damage are the rare 'rock' band that follow in the lineage of artists like Faust, Tony Conrad, Steve Reich, and P?rson Sound, one that creates such heavy yet minimalistic audio treasures that not only hit you viscerally but also give space to contemplate on your place in the cosmos. Their longest offering yet, Water Damage hits you with four side-long tracks of krautpunk ending with a cover of 'Ladybird' by Shit & Shine featuring Craig Clouse on vocals. Drone until you hear god speak." --Joe Trainer, Dummy

ESFAND Piltan CD
A unique blend of traditional Iranian sounds and contemporary electronic music, featuring vocal features by renowned Iranian artists. Ecstatic dance music to get lost in. Esfand is the final month of the Persian calendar, ending with the Nowruz spring festival. Esfand is also a band, founded in 2020, consisting of Rouzbeh Esfand and Patrick Stewart. A duo that fuses traditional Iranian Folk elements with Western beats to create something completely new. Their debut album Piltan is a flamboyantly danceable statement. No crossover kitsch. Pure instinct music. For his master's thesis, Rouzbeh studied the millennia-old rituals and customs of various Iranian ethnic groups. Piltan is a sonic journey through a vast country full of cultural peculiarities: starting with the southern Z?r rituals of the Persian Gulf, moving to the equestrian people of the Bakhtiari in the southwest, on to the Qashqai in the west and to the Kurds in northwestern Iran with their Dervish rituals. "We're not just about Techno," says Pat. "It's about feeling, groove and excitement." Vocal features by renowned Iranian artists are tailored to the songwriting. Singer and percussionist Habib Meftah is featured on two songs. On "Shawl", Mohsen Namjoo guest stars, another folk expert, singing lyrics by well- known Iranian poets Daqiqi and Farrukhi Sistani. London singer Misagh Moradi is featured on "Without Foot, Without Head", based on texts by world-famous poet Rumi. Piltan is the follow-up to 2021's H?le. Folk meets techno, millennia-old music meets Western club culture.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Their Satanic Majesties Second Request 2LP
2024 repress; black vinyl. Gatefold 180 gram double vinyl version. Truth in advertising: the Brian Jonestown Massacre's sophomore album does, as promised, spring forth from the Rolling Stones' long-underrated 1967 masterpiece Their Satanic Majesties Request, copping not only Mick and Keith's leering bad-boy attitude but also their rock-and-roll-circus spirit. Opening with the brilliant "All Around You (Intro)," a tongue-in-cheek guide to the mind-altering journey ahead, the record is a kaleidoscopic, drug-fueled freakout -- like the Stones' namesake album, Second Request is painted by Eastern drones and psychedelic tangents, each track bubbling with dozens of sound effects including sitars, mellotrons, farfisas, didgeridoos, tablas, congas, and glockenspiels. Travelling through the past, darkly, the Massacre arrives on the other side unscathed; their music is too rich to be merely retro, and too knowing to be merely slavish -- the Stones themselves haven't made a record this strong or entertaining in years.

FRANK, JACKSON C. Jackson C. Frank LP
2024 repress. "Jackson C. Frank's eponymous album is the embodiment of folk legend. Issued in late 1965 on the UK Columbia label, it was for many years more famous for its producer (Paul Simon) and the musicians who would go on to cover its songs (Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, Sandy Denny) than for the hauntingly beautiful music contained inside. Frank's backstory certainly adds to the legacy: born in Buffalo, New York, he used the settlement from a childhood accident to sail to London where he quickly became a fixture of the bustling folk scene. Performing a mix of blues standards and originals, he met fellow ex-pat Paul Simon who would put up the money to record Frank's only LP. For such a sparsely recorded work, Jackson C. Frank covers a lot of ground. From the rugged, world-weary opener 'Blues Run The Game' to the stunning melancholy of 'Milk And Honey,' Frank's nimble acoustic guitar and passionate howls are all that is needed to power such authentic songwriting. Captured in a single-day session, these ten tracks are stark, gritty and seemingly out-of-place with time. There may be no '60s folk record that is simultaneously as rare and influential as Jackson C. Frank's self-titled debut."

PARKER, COOPER-MOORE, HAMID DRAKE, WILLIAM Heart Trio LP
LP version. "Heart Trio features three lifelong-devoted fellow travelers on the path of healing through sound. World-renowned and revered bassist-composer-leader William Parker has performed and recorded extensively with both Cooper-Moore and Hamid Drake over the past 30+ years. And, the three of them have been core since 2012 in Parker's reborn In Order To Survive quartet. Heart Trio is, remarkably then, their debut as a trio on record. William here plays doson ngoni, dudek, and flutes of bamboo, cedar and walnut. Cooper-Moore on his hand-crafted ashimba and harp; Hamid Drake on frame drum and drum kit. All of this music was collectively composed at the time of its creation. Heart Trio creates balancing music in a world which day to day is more evidently filled with the exponential effect of increasingly grotesque inequity, a world where wars continue to be started and maintained by men adept at manipulation and a thorough disregard for the sanctity of life. Heart Trio creates organic music played on organic materials in a world of exponentially accelerating 'technologies' whose primary stock-in-trade is to transform listeners into more readily exploitable data sets. Yes, Heart Trio creates balancing music, antithetical to destruction. Music to draw sustenance from. Some measure of fortitude, at least, for compassionate souls in the elevating struggle against increasingly inextricable imposed realities that parse a human being's value solely on what they are able to consume. This is music for sunrise and sunset. Daily music. Healing, centering, mantra, heart music. From William's notes included with the release: 'The theory behind this music is the music itself. Empty and fill the heart and soul with sound, letting it dance. Without pretense. We are trying to get to a flow -- Earth, sky, and flowing water sounds that jump out of the painting.'"

Remastered from the original master tapes. Includes a bonus track not included on the original vinyl version and a fold out insert with lyrics and an interview with the band. With strong sonic ties to the best American hardcore (think Black Flag and early SST and Touch & Go bands) it still sounds as fresh, powerful and aggressive as when it was originally recorded in 1983! 15 tracks of pure unaltered anger and frustration.

HORSEBURNER Voice Of Storms LP
"Horseburner blasted onto the scene amid comparisons to Mastodon and Baroness, with an iteration of high-energy sludge metal that sprung from their Appalachian industrial background and elevated conceptual themes. Gear-shifting from hard-charging to restrained to urgent and angular, they distinguish themselves from their stoner-psych contemporaries with staggering musicianship, deploying endless musical flexes that a lot of bands just don't have in their bags. Voice of Storms is a sludge-prog triumph of soaring, obliterating mini-epics that goes places a lot of heavy rock doesn't. Like a more brutal Torche or a more adept High on Fire, Horseburner grab you by the throat and submerge you in blistering tempos, fearless hooks and burly crush, always pushing forward and blazing into new sonic territory."

COIL/NINE INCH NAILS Recoiled CD
2024 reprint. Recoiled is a rambunctious alchemy of magikal Coil sensibilities and hi-tech home circa '90s mixing technique, all fused in the cave-like early studios of Danny Hyde/Peter Christopherson. These were the unrestrained PRE-BIG studio-mix-downs of four songs which long-time Coil admirer/collaborator Trent Reznor requested Coil to remix. Reznor sent over the original multi-tracks and DATs to Hyde/Christopherson, who independently mixed versions and then met to synch both creations, molding them into these master versions. Recoiled includes a fuller, more opulent version of the track "Closer," which eventually made it onto the opening credits of the movie SE7EN. These five lengthy compositions (just under 40 minutes) are pre-Ableton/laptop generation-type priest-song creations, with the use of baby alarms and numerous wires to create bespoke effects. These legendary tracks were always rumored to exist and, only the due diligence of a dedicated NIN forum who hunted them down, are released/unleashed for your listening pleasure. Four of the tracks were released on the download-only Uncoiled. A bonus, previously-unheard track from the same sessions closes the album. Jhonn Balance is also manifest on this gilded constellation. Beautifully remastered.

BREAK 3000 The Wait 12"
Break 3000 present this special vinyl re-issue of some much sought after electro clash classics from the period 1998-2003. Available on limited red marbled vinyl for the first time again in almost 25 years! After the fast-selling Emolotion EP on Italy's "Mondo Phase" imprint and the The Rise of Poseidon 1 on the Argentinian label Calypso's Dream comes the final chapter of the early '00s electro and electro clash gems produced by Break 3000 while living in Maastricht and Cologne. The first track is a remix made for the legendary Pocketgame label from Germany in 2003 that was run by Maru & Comix, released on the We Are He-Man EP by STR & Tim Tycoon that also featured a stellar Legowelt remix. This one is an absolute belter of a track and to this day is one of Break 3000's favorite tunes he ever produced. Followed by the cool, dark and Cold-Wave'esque electro cut "The Wait" that was released on a massive compilation on Pocketgame that same year called Bonuslevel One: North and South with such amazing artists on it as Steril, Ladytron, Mutron, Nitsch and Gleinser, Hong Kong Counterfeit, and of course the label heads Maru & Comix. The B-side looks back in time even further. "Electric Blue" and "Spacemachinenreise" were released on Meuse Muzique from Maastricht and were on the Maastricht-Liege EP and the Electric Kingdom EP from 2002 and 2003. Lastly "Lectrolite #2" was released on a one-off vinyl release on Break 3000's own Casa Nova imprint in 1999. All tracks have been carefully re-mastered from the original tapes and sound better than ever!

WRIGHT, FRANK Frank Wright Trio LP
Limited restock; reissue, originally released on ESP Disk' in 1966. Frank "The Reverend" Wright was one of the most powerful saxophonists to pick up on Albert Ayler's freedom and ferocious playing. Born in Mississippi and raised in Memphis, TN and then Cleveland, OH, he started in music as a bassist in blues bands but switched to tenor sax under the influence of his Cleveland friend Albert Ayler. Wright's "energy music" approach to tenor saxophone was influenced by Ayler but at the time in the '60s Wright's intensity was unmatched and utterly distinctive. He followed Ayler to New York City, arriving in 1964 and fitting into the scene right away John Coltrane offered him a spot on his album Ascension in early 1965, though Wright demurred. ESP Disk' owner Bernard Stollman signed Wright on the spot upon hearing him sit in with Coltrane, and on November 11, 1965, Wright went into a New York studio to record his debut album, considered a free jazz classic. Wright's influence can be traced down to Charles Gayle, Sabir Mateen, and other hard-blowing tenormen, but even so, he remains unique. Personnel: Frank Wright - tenor saxophone; Henry Grimes - bass; Tom Price - drums. "Wright was throwing together ideas in a spirit of jubilation." --Clifford Allen, All About Jazz "... easily recommended to open-eared listeners who enjoy hearing fiery sound explorations." --Scott Yanow, AllMusic

AZYMUTH Azimuth LP
2024 repress. Far Out Recordings present a reissue of the seminal debut album from Azymuth, Azim?th, originally released in 1975. Having never seen a vinyl release outside of Brazil, Azim?th is considered a milestone in Brazilian music. Azymuth -- Jose Roberto Bertrami, Ivan Conti, and Alex Malheiros, as well as Ariovaldo Contesini -- formed in the late '60s just as Os Mutantes released their debut record (1968). Whilst Mutantes were honing a psychedelic "Amazonian" version of western pop music, Azymuth were creating a futuristic, electric interpretation of US jazz -- also driven by the same rootsy Brazilian "swing" that Mutantes had harnessed. Bertrami was the drive behind Azymuth's sound -- a control freak and musical genius obsessed with the latest technology who wanted to use it to push the boundaries of music in a way that no one else in Brazil had done. His use of keyboards has drawn comparisons between Azymuth's work and Herbie Hancock's early '70s output, yet with its Brazilian swing Azymuth's electric jazz sound is unmistakably their own. Conti is an impulsive and an incredibly energetic drummer. Alex Malheiros, who learned his trade playing from the master of Brazilian swing Ed Lincoln, is one of Brazil's original groove masters. Bertrami rose to fame as an arranger in the mid-60s, and by the late '60s he was arranging for the queen of Brazilian music, Elis Regina. Released in summer 1975, the album was a minor commercial success selling 200,000 copies. Opening track "Linha do Horizonte" -- a sublime piece of melancholic electronic saudade where deep cinematic synths melt into gently strummed acoustic jazz guitar -- was chosen for a TV novella and went on to sell half a million, propelling Azymuth onto the Brazilian music scene. The rest of the album doesn't disappoint -- "Mel? Dos Dois Bicudos" sees Azymuth plugging them into the Brazilian national grid for a slice of electrified psyched out samba funk with crashing military drums, shrieking sirens and psych synths. "Brazil" is a lolloping bass led groover with Bertrami's melody giving the track a charming, innocent naivety, and "Ca?a A Raposa" is a boogie jazz funk groover. Azim?th is the album that kick-started it all for them, the record that was the blueprint and definition of their "samba doido/crazy samba" sound. Comes in a gatefold sleeve; 180 gram vinyl.

GARCIA AND MANUEL MOTA, MARGARIDA Domestic Scene LP
"Bassist Margarida Garcia and guitarist Manuel Mota are two of the best-known string wielders from Lisbon's active improvising community. Both players work the edges of sound and form in ways that don't fit neatly into any genre category, while creating exciting sonic landscapes that appeal equally to fans of avant-garde rock, free jazz and experimental music. They have worked together frequently in a variety of formats -- duo, quartet, etc. -- but Margarida is the only one Feeding Tube has issued work by previously -- 2022's superb Good Night CD (FTR 716CD). That album was a wonderfully abstract collection of bass-generated sounds hovering in the mist, illuminated from within like the rotating lights of a swamp-bound UFO. Domestic Scene displays some of those same qualities, but the four tracks provide equal space to allow Mota's electric guitar to play around with autonomous musical ideas on a parallel track. It often feels as though there is deep communication going on between the players, but there is also a sense of this activity occurring in a sort of dream time, and possibly in languages that appear similar without being the same at all. Regardless, the music here is beautiful and engaging in a way that only true Intermedia art (in the classic Fluxus sense) can be. It refuses to exist within boundaries, forcing us to ponder its conceptual basis at the same time we dig the way it sounds. The fundamentally transitional nature of the music adds a layer of intellectual discord that otherwise wouldn't exist. And we as listeners can either engage with the questions it raises or choose to just enjoy it as sound art. Either way, it's a damn fine spin. So dig in, baby." --Byron Coley, 2024

FAKI, LEN Fusion Remixes 03/03 12"
This third and final installment of the Fusion remix series sees Len Faki personally select from his most beloved producers to expand on his ambitious album project Fusion that was released as a double LP in 2023. First up is Herbert's trippy rework of "Don't Be Stupid Day," one of the album's most memorable vocal cuts. Herbert's "Brain Dub" transforms the track slowly and playfully, using the witty lyrics for crafting catchy hooks. Irish powerhouse Cromby has two appearances on this EP, getting to revamp the more house-leaning productions from Fusion. His take on "It's Time (to Move Your Body)" is grooving grand, its bubbling acid riff and dancing hi hats teeming with life. Meanwhile, the "Blackjack" remix further energizes the original's shiny centerstage synths, crazily riding the pitch up and down for an all-out party. Finally, the brotherly duo Glaskin are reshaping the ambient album highlight "Gamma" into a highly effective, reduced but propulsive, tunneling techno affair.

LANDLESS Luireach CD
Folk music emerging from Dublin seems to be everywhere at the moment -- demonstrated most clearly by Lankum gaining a host of "Album of the Year" nods at the end of 2023 -- but it would be a mistake to call this a movement, much less any kind of revival. While Lankum, John Francis Flynn, Ye Vagabonds, Lisa O'Neill et al might be new to a lot of audiences, these artists have been exploring and expanding what folk music can be for years, decades even. And this is just as true of Landless, the quartet who've been singing together since 2013, finding each other through the traditional singing scene in the city and, crucially, the Sacred Harp singing community. Working once again with John "Spud" Murphy (the Lankum producer and ?XN member), L?ireach sees the quartet adding sparingly-used instrumentation -- Ruth's aching pump organ on "Death & The Lady," M?abh's shruti box on "Ej Husari," Lankum's Cormac MacDiarmada on fiddle, viola and banjo throughout, even some mournful trombone from Alex Borwick on "The Newry Highwayman." The songs for the album were gathered over a number of years, Ruth explains, and while the melody and lyrics are paramount, there is a common theme for many of the inclusions. L?ireach is an album of quiet power, soaked in tradition but finding new and exciting ways to present these remarkable songs, songs that are full of melancholy, love, death and mystery. L?ireach rewards your close attention.

ORQUESTA DEL DESIERTO Dos CD
Remixed and remastered reissue of the legendary Orquesta Del Desierto sophomore album. Unable to tour as a group due to commitments to other projects but fueled by the success of the debut release, Brown immediately turned to booking another recording session for the band. Hoping to further expand the group's dynamic sound, Brown and Stahl solicited song contributions from Mike Riley and Country Mark Engel for the second album. While the core of Brown, Stahl, Riley, Engel and Lalli remained intact for the second session, the group's diverse approach benefitted from the addition of drummer Adam Maples and percussionist/drummer Pete Davidson. Additionally, the group was joined at famed Joshua Tree studio Rancho de la Luna by pianist Tim Jones and Bill Barrett on trumpet. Released in 2003, Dos was immediately embraced as a "compelling fusion of Latin stylings and psychedelic-tinged blues that is a real alternative these days." Bolstered by similar acknowledgements and reviews of their second album, Orquesta del Desierto committed to a series of performances throughout southern California and a European tour in 2004. Joined by drummer Bryan Brown, these shows have become legendary among the fans who were able to attend the band's only active period of live performances.

13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS Easter Everywhere (180 Gram Vinyl) LP
2023 repress; 180 gram exact repro reissue of their 2nd album, originally released in 1967. "The Elevators' second album, Easter Everywhere showed the band's progression light years away from their first one but a year earlier. Indeed, they had transmuted beyond their Lightnin' Hopkins'n'Hooker heated acid blues; delving further inward to the cosmic eye, mind and beyond. Easter Everywhere is an album that exhibits group chemistry at its ultimate unification. The Elevators had already arrived at a place where they had the songs, lyrics AND feel to animate both into a consciousness-delving manner, but now they took their explorations even further out and beyond the crust, the mantle and the white-hot core of the psychedelic experience into a place where existence can be seen as an eternal dance: a play between time and space, of push and pull (it's hard to describe without using the language it demands, but here goes) of the whole exchange of thingy-inny to thingy-outty and all that implies?of the spaces between yourself and your existence, as the rollicking rhythm that is life steams full on ahead into the future. A broader expanse was never mapped out by a rock'n'roll band of its time." -- The Seth Man/HEAD HERITAGE.

KRAUSE, PANTHERA Aside The Aeons LP
Respected Leipzig based multi-instrumentalist Panthera Krause arrives on KANN with new age appeal! Delving into a more mysterious sound than the label is commonly known, the artist draws from the dark side of the pool, taking in Baltic choir inspirations, '80s cinema themes (Tarantino's favorite) and lyrical GDR rock for good measure. Produced in secrecy during 2023, Krause gets in touch with his inner Stereolab by creating an enchanting new full length entirely on headphones. Drip fed to those close to him, he was convinced to share these audiobooks to a wider audience, now resulting in Aside The Aeons. Adding almost only sounds from Korg M3R, Roland Aeorophon, and a JX 03 synthesizer to the action, the record explores a unique musical universe and head trip for the astral plane.

LIGHTNIN' SAM HOPKINS Live From The Ash Grove... Plus! LP
"Samuel John Hopkins was born in 1912 to a poor sharecropping family in Centerville, Texas. He immersed himself in the blues at an early age, having met Blind Lemon Jefferson at a church picnic not long after having struck out on his own. In 1946, Hopkins was 'discovered' by Aladdin Records' talent scout Lola Anne Cullum, who convinced him to travel to Los Angeles from Houston. There, he cut sides both as a solo artist and as part of a duo with pianist Wilson Smith. It was during his stint at Aladdin that he acquired his nickname, while his partner was dubbed 'Thunder.' Shortly thereafter, Hopkins returned to Houston, his home base for the balance of his life. The legendary blues guitarist performed at Los Angeles' famed Ash Grove venue on many occasions over the club's decade-and-a-half existence. Ten of the selections on this set are compiled from two separate performances at the club, and none of the performances on the album have previously been available commercially. The album's A-side consists of acoustic tracks from a set recorded on November 29, 1970. The B-side collects a couple of acoustic performances from September 22, 1965, and the disc is rounded out with four electric tracks with his band from Palo Alto's In Your Ear club recorded on August 18, 1971. While most of the tunes are originals, the set lists include some distinctive cover versions of the R&B classics 'What I'd Say' and 'Hi-Heel Sneakers,' along with some folk/gospel nuggets, 'Don't The Moon Look Pretty' and 'How Long Has It Been.' Whether solo or with a band, Hopkins imprints all the tracks with his special electricity; you might call it 'Lightnin'.' The 40-minute live collection LP has a limited-edition pressing on black vinyl. Includes some rare photos and liner notes."

TORAL, RAFAEL Spectral Evolution LP
Repressed; LP version. "After a two-decade interlude, Jim O'Rourke's Moikai returns with Spectral Evolution, a major new work by Rafael Toral. Making his name in the mid-1990s with influential guitar drone platters like Sound Mind Sound Body and Wave Field, Toral has never been one to rest on his laurels repeating his past glories. Since 2017, Toral's work has been entering a new phase, often still centered around the arsenal of self-built instruments developed in the Space Program, but with a renewed interest in the long tones and almost static textures of his earlier work; he has also, after more than a decade, returned to the electric guitar. Spectral Evolution is undoubtedly Toral's most sophisticated work to date, bringing together seemingly incompatible threads from his entire career into a powerful new synthesis, both wildly experimental and emotionally affecting. Toral manages the almost miraculous feat of having his self-built electronic instruments (which in the past he had seen as 'inadequate to play any music based on the Western system') play in tune. In an unexpected sidestep away from any of his previous work, the chord changes that underpin many of the episodes on Spectral Evolution are derived from classic jazz harmony, including takes on the archetypal Gershwin 'Rhythm changes' and Ellington-Strayhorn's 'Take the ?A' Train,' albeit slowed to such an extent that each chord becomes a kind of environment in its own right. Threading together twelve distinct episodes into a flowing whole, Spectral Evolution alternates moments of airy instrumental interplay with dense sonic mass, breaking up the pieces based on chord changes with ambient 'Spaces.' At points reduced to almost a whisper, at other moments Toral's electronics wail, squelch, and squeak like David Tudor's live-electronic rainforest. Similarly, his use of the guitar encompasses an enormous dynamic and textural range, from chiming chords to expansive drones, from crystal clarity to fuzzy grit: on the beautiful 'Your Goodbye,' his filtered, distorted soloing recalls Loren Connors in its emotive depth and wandering melodic sensibility. The product of three years of experimentation and recording, and synthesizing the insights of more than thirty years of musical research, Spectral Evolution is the quintessential album of guitar music from Rafael Toral."

BATORS, STIV Disconnected LP
Originally released in 1980, this was Stiv Bators' first solo album. Now reissued with two bonus tracks, not available on the original version, a slightly different picture on the cover (the actual unfiltered photo as used on the 1980 issue) and a booklet with extensive liner notes and photos. Bators was the man who destroyed Rocket from the Tombs, from which he hijacked half the members to found one of the most influential American punk bands to have existed, The Dead Boys. Stiv had turned in his broken teeth for a more power pop oriented solo career. This is not an album recorded by a has-been former punk idealist; instead it's a true step forward into another unknown arena packing all the glare and attitude that remained from the last. The music is more similar to '60s power pop than the vicious punk rock that Bators became known for originally, while a member of The Dead Boys. New generations continue to discover it. It still holds up very well and sounds as fresh and vibrant as ever.

WE ALL TOGETHER We All Together LP
Between 1967 and 1974 Sa?l and Manuel Cornejo led a series of epoch-making groups on the MAG label (New Juggler Sound, Laghonia, and We All Together) in the history of Peruvian rock. All these bands were directly influenced by the British invasion and used new sounds from Hammond, phase shifters, synthesizers and tapes played backwards, which stimulated rivalry with other groups. Another hallmark of the brothers was the technical quality of their records, thanks to Saul's supervision of all MAG recordings between 1972 and 1974. At the end of 1971, when Laghonia was working on the last tracks of Etc?tera, they met Manuel Antonio Guerrero's (MAG) son, Carlos, who had just got back from the USA, and gladly joined in the choruses of the last songs Laghonia was recording. They met up again soon after to rehearse some of Paul McCartney's songs. As soon as he heard them play, Guerrero Senior urged them to form a group focused on cover versions of foreign hits not yet known in Peru. Initially, the Cornejo brothers weren't enthused by a project so different from Laghonia, but ended up accepting as it gave them the opportunity to spend time in the studio. Carlos' melodic voice was another incentive, although they made it clear that the new group, We All Together (WAT), would stick to the mixing desk: "The group isn't into presentations or shows, we're about recording music and purifying it to the max," stated Sa?l at that time. Their first album included four covers of Paul McCartney and Badfinger, several compositions by Carlos Guerrero -- appealing Beatles-style melodies -- and two songs from Sa?l and Manuel's archives. "Children," by keyboardist Carlos Salom, opens the LP: a nostalgic description of childhood, with the distinctive piano sound (achieved through mixing) that permeates the record. Although WAT sang and composed in English, they had no intention of undermining or alienating national culture. Their aim was much more innocent: they simply wanted to make it in the English-speaking world. "It's a Sin to Go Away" was composed during Laghon?a's lifetime as a band and it features guitars played backwards and a psychedelic-progressive style closely attuned to the era. After being included on several compilations, praise for the song has flowed from Europe and the United States in recent years. The album was released in July 1972 and became one of the best-selling Peruvian rock LPs.

MELCOCHITA Y LOS YORK'S El Sicodelico 7"
After two successful albums on MAG, supported by a handful of singles, the Peruvian garage beat band Los York's culminated their disagreements with their label by leaving it in 1969 and signing a new contract with Virrey. Along the way there was an album to finish for which they had already recorded a good part of the instrumental tracks. Los York's 69 finally saw the light of day on MAG but, to the surprise of its fans, the voice of its charismatic singer, Pablo Luna, had been replaced by that of the no less iconic Pablo Branda, also known as Melcochita. The all-round artist, trained in the studios of MAG as a skilled percussionist, guitarist and sonero, proved himself to also sing and shout with the same energy and attitude as the brilliant Pablo Luna. On top of that, it is rumored that it was another MAG artists, Los Teddy's, who actually completed the instrumental tracks for some cuts on the album, something that seems consistent with the much more energetic and surfy style of songs like "El Sicod?lico." Two of the best and wildest songs contained on their last LP had never appeared on a single despite their enormous potential for the dance floor and the interest they aroused among DJs since their rediscovery in the '60s scene. Set the dance floor on fire with the first time 45 issue of this Latin garage double-sider.

OLUMA Cooking Time CD
Oluma was founded in 2021 by bassist Gregor Nicolai, drummer Andr? van der Heide, and saxophonist Roman Polatzky. The instrumental compositions of the nine-piece band can be categorized as global groove. They create dense grooves that are played by energetic brass lines and lead into virtuoso improvisations. However, the four brass players can also accompany the audience into a dreamy world in a floating and light manner. Berlin's multicultural scene with its diverse musical influences has shaped Andr? and Gregor and brought them together. They also share a love of handmade groove music and a passion for danceable beats. They met Roman at the Musikhochschule Leipzig, where the international band came together. The album title Cooking Time did not come about by chance: the music is created in joint songwriting sessions, where beats are tinkered with and ideas are sung. The band enlisted delay nerd and Afrobeat aficionado Umberto Echo for their recordings, who uses old analog technology to create a nostalgic sound that meets modern production. With their debut album, Oluma wants to share the idea that music can contribute to global understanding and connect people. Carolina Vallejo from the One World Records label has provided exactly the right environment for this. Oluma presents a sonorous testimony to the universal language of music. Their rousing performances and artistic diversity make them one of the most exciting bands on the contemporary music scene.

PARKS, TESS Blood Hot (Gold Vinyl) LP
10th-anniversary edition of Tess Parks' debut album. A native of Toronto, Tess Parks moved to London, England at the age of seventeen where she briefly studied photography before deciding to focus on music. Tess made an impression on industry legend Alan McGee, founder of Creation Records, albeit the timing of their meeting could hardly have been less ideal; McGee was no longer involved in music and Tess was due to move back to Toronto. After moving back to her hometown in 2012, Tess formed a band on the advice of McGee and less than a year after their meeting, he returned to music with his new label, 359 Music. Tess became one of his first signings and released her debut record Blood Hot in November 2013 to excellent reviews. One reviewer described her as "Patti Smith on Quaaludes." Others have mentioned her "gauzy psychedelic sound" and "smouldering voice." Blood Hot is inimitably confident. It's slow and psychedelic at times, while being loud and ready to fill a stadium at others. There isn't a moment on the album that isn't relatable or that doesn't ring to the tune of a timeless classic to be talked about for years to come (the same way people discuss The Velvet Underground or My Bloody Valentine records today). Her cult-like following has turned into a movement. Incredibly relevant yet timeless. Cool and anti-cool. An enigma that doesn't need solving. Tess Parks is as she's always been. Her best work is already out there. And her best yet is still to come. Printed on gold vinyl with gatefold sleeve and including a handwritten lyric booklet.

TUMIDO FEAT. ALEX KRANABETTER Tumido Feat. Alex Kranabetter LP
The ninth studio album of the band Tumido features trumpet player Alex Kranabetter (Soap and Skin, Vodoo J?rgens). For more than 20 years, Tumido has been on the lookout for something new, always on the move, focused on energy in any form, driving rhythms, powerful bass, spacey drones. Trumpet has always been a big part of their sound universe, so it felt very natural to collaborate with a master of trumpet sounds, Alex Kranabetter, and record an album together. "Lithox" -- a maelstrom you can't escape, sucked in by a hypnotic bass and driving rhythms into a trance world you don't want to leave. "Dwa" -- a summer hit out of Hades on the slide to hell. "180?" -- a volcanic eruption on a lonely island. "Dirt Rodeo" -- the branches of the fire tree dance with laughter, clouds of smoke cloud the senses and the landing is a success.

MONOCHORD Double Happiness LP
Monochord are Vienna-based musicians Bernhard Hammer and Jakob Schneidewind, two thirds of Elektro Guzzi, though Monochord paints a different picture. Electroacoustic experiments and filmic elements define the music that develops instinctively yet irrevocably, a sense of forward motion setting them apart. Compositionally minimal, their tracks maximize their inherent potential all the way through to their logical and even illogical end. Referencing electronica, ambient, shoegaze and at times modern classical harmonics, Monochord builds and unbuilds in a slow heartbeat. Introspective and filmic, its quiet and non-confrontational nature makes Monochord move in the interzone between various spheres. Their music escapes definition and that is its truest definition. Its subtle pulse and evocative and drony feel invite and inspire. Featuring Franz Hautzinger and Renee Benson.

BRUNO Y EL GRUPO AREVALO, ROLANDO Cosas Raras LP
Cosas Raras is the new album from Argentina's cumbia hero Rolando Bruno. On Cosas Raras, Bruno and his band Grupo Ar?valo romp through twelve tracks of their signature "cumbia trash" sound -- a rough and ready mix of Peruvian-inspired cumbia, punk, and other vintage throwback musical and visual inspirations from pop culture (like UFOs, street food and horror movies), all spun together into a wild mashup. Cosas Raras is the group's third album, and finds them traveling even farther afield -- exploring Arabic and flamenco influences, Afro disco, Japanese pop, Latin American baladas, and even Dominican merengue. This last genre serves as inspiration for the album's lead single, "Merentrash," a fun and very danceable "merenrap' tune with a retro Miami club vibe. In the vein of contemporary experimental underground tropical artists like Chicha Libre, Meridian Brothers, Frente Cumbiero, Acid Coco, Money Chicha, Xixa, and C.A.M.P.O.S., Rolando Bruno Y Su Grupo Ar?valo are an important part of the scene, but are not yet as well known in the U.S. at the moment. Cosas Raras is set to change this unwarranted obscurity with its infectious rhythms, psychedelic guitar flourishes and memorable melodies. Multi-instrumentalist and graphic designer Rolando Bruno was born and raised in Buenos Aires and lived three years in Spain, before returning home to pursue his unique musical sound and accompanying visual style. His current musical project (psychedelic cumbia and other tropical sounds) was conceived in 2005. In 2015 Bruno expanded his approach, putting together a live band and reintroducing himself as Rolando Bruno Y El Grupo Ar?valo. His backing band is a "supergroup' of sorts, composed of underground musicians from Buenos Aires, including members of Les Mentettes, Alfonso El Pintor, Los Alamos, and Pecera.

KNIGHTS OF THE REALM Darker Than Leather CD
Comprising the virtuosic talents of Magnus "MegaloMangan" Henriksson from Eclipse, Lars "The Hammer" Sk?ld of Tiamat, Marcus "Mean Machine" von Boisman representing Tank, and the newest addition, Mats "Spellbinder" Rydstr?m from Avatarium, Knights Of The Realm forge a formidable alliance poised to conquer the darkest realms of the metal kingdom. Collectively with over 50 heavy releases under their four-row studded belts (three is also okay!), Knights Of The Realm are not exactly newcomers to heavy metal, and their self-titled 2021 debut album surely hit home with the international metal press. Their music, a fusion of melodic heaviness reminiscent of the NWOBHM era, enriched with contemporary elements, resonated deeply with both traditional metal aficionados and a new generation of listeners. The band's journey has been marked by personal and collective challenges, providing fertile ground for introspection and artistic growth. Magnus Henriksson explains: "Coming out of the pandemic was great, but then to handle life when things got back to 'normal' was a bit harder for all of us! The good thing is that we could channel some of this into the new songs, which I believe has made them more powerful and dark." Indeed, their forthcoming album, Darker Than Leather, delves deep into themes of adversity and resilience, with tracks such as "Pow-er Of Evil," "The Dark" and "Hell Can Wait" offering a visceral exploration of the human experience.

TRANCE MACABRE Trance Macabre LP
"Trance Macabre's self-titled debut is a jazz album born in the punk-house basements of Connecticut. Inspired by the ensemble's Hartford roots, this music responds to figures like Jackie McLean and Alice Coltrane and their outcry of speculative musical timbres within pop forms. The band recorded these four original compositions to quarter inch tape in East Haven, CT thanks to engineer Matt Paolillo (Tick Hive, Kodak Fire, Shirese) in one take apiece over the course of two hours in October of 2023. For fans of ESP Disk, Strata East, and ECM Records, but also an enticing choice for new jazz listeners who may enjoy up-tempo ostinatos patterned by a spectral periphery."

GERD Dance Of Enjoyment 12"
Based in the Netherlands and strongly associated with the Clone complex, Gerd has been releasing countless tracks and records since the dawn of the nineties. A true child of the "techno" Zeitgeist back then, he is keeper of a dozen monikers, project names and joint ventures that tend to connect the dots between house and techno, functionality and avantgarde electronics. Gerd's frame of mind is second to none, when it comes to sound research, inspiration and imagination. For Running Back he decided to put his own spin on some of the label's signature dishes. The opener "Dance of Enjoyment" is exactly that. Based on a cleared sample from Shakira by Quinton Madlala and imported by early South African kwaito and house, it is exactly that. Life-affirming dance-floor fun or pogo time for piano people. "Let the Music Take Control" dials the peak time slightly back to being a party starter with its retro-futuristic speak and spell command and some evergreen breakbeats. An additional DJ tool allows to spread the gospel elsewhere, too. Speaking of which, the flipside deals with that in the realm of an Italian influenced theme park. Sitting neatly between the disco and the house appendix of "Italo," "Change Of Heart" and "Digital Illusion" are sugar frosted and masterful produced versions of a style that might never go out of fashion. Earnest characters might be happy with the included bonus beats on their own. All's well that ends well: Gerd and Running Back are here to save a party near you!

LISA, LEA Poem For The Lost Souls: Kuniyuki & Session Victim Versions 2x12"
Following well-regarded outings on Phonica Records and Wolf Music, and a superb Many Shades Of House compilation released this year, Lausanne-based Lea Lisa joins Smallville Records with Poem For The Lost Souls, accompanied by remixes from Kuniyuki and Session Victim as a special double-12" package with gatefold cover. For these tracks, Lea Lisa has worked with several musicians in the studio to transform the warmth and organic feel of real instruments into her musical universe. The original mix of "Poem For The Lost Souls" leads, a jazzy house journey that ebbs and flows through fluttering flute melodies, ethereal chords, wandering piano and funk-infused bass grooves running atop organic percussion and disco tinged drums. On the B Side, the "Broken Mix" follows, as the name would suggest, rhythmically shifting focus towards off-kilter drum breaks alongside the other melodies and again -- all the ingredients that make a classic house track. Opening the C-side on record two, acclaimed Japanese artist and Mule Musiq regular Kuniyuki steps up to rework "Poem For The Lost Souls," in typical fashion the Sapporo born producer extracts the core grooves from the original and shapes it into something uniquely his own, laden with warmth, soul and dynamics. The duo Session Victim then round out the release on Side D with their interpretation, fusing together the original synth melodies with their own amalgamation of intricately intertwined keys and atmospherics, underpinned by a shuffled rhythm section and bouncy low-end drive. It's coming with a gatefold cover-artwork by Stefan Marx for a cherry-blossom glimpse of Yoyogi Park in Tokyo.

INTERCOMMUNAL FREE DANCE MUSIC ORCHESTRA L'Inter Communal CD
The Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra was created in 1971 by French free jazz pianist legend, Fran?ois Tusques. "Free Jazz" was also the name of the 1965 recording Tusques made along with Michel Portal, Fran?ois Jeanneau, Bernard Vitet, Beb Gu?rin, and Charles Saudrais. Six years later, in 1971 Tusques would go ahead of free jazz. Wondering if free jazz wasn't a bit of a dead end together with Barney Wilen ("Le Nouveau Jazz") or even solo ("Piano Dazibao" and "Dazibao N?2"), Tusques formed the Inter Communal Free Dance Music Orchestra, an association under the banner of which the different communities of the country would come together and compose, quite simply. If at first the structure was made up of professional musicians from the jazz scene it would rapidly seek out talent in the lively world of the MPF (Musique Populaire Fran?aise). Compiling extracts from concerts given between 1976 and 1978, L'Inter Communal demonstrate the "social function" which inhabited free jazz and popular music at the time calling upon Spanish singer Carlos Andreu along with Michel Marre, Jo Maka, Adolf Winkler, and Jean M?reu. Andreu, claimed Tusques, was a griot "who created of new genre of popular song improvised with our music, based on events going on at the time." L'Inter Communal can start the festivities: on "Blues pour Miguel Enriquez," it is first Thelonious Monk who is invoked in an homage to one of the leading figures of the Chilean revolution, and a victim of Pinochet. The circumstances may be serious, the music, though, is not. The musicians light a bonfire to bring together on the same frequency France and Spain, the Americas and Africa: "L'heure est ? la lute," is the new song offered by the l'Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra. As if proof were needed that their music is still more than timely!

As with L'Inter Communal a few years earlier, Le Musichien follows on from the group of varying musicians that Tusques had conceived as a "people's jazz workshop." In 1981, at the famous Paris address, 28 rue Dunois, the pianist sang with his partner Carlos Andreu "Le Musichien," an Afro-Catalan tale over an exceptional bass line from Jean-Jacques Avenel backed by percussion from Kilikus, saxophones from Sylvain Kassap, and Yebga Likoba and trombone from Ramadolf which presented a myriad of constellations. "Les Amis d'Afrique" is recorded the following year, at the Tomb?es de la Nuit festival in Rennes, bassist Tanguy Le Dor? would weave with Tusques the fabric on which would evolve an explosive "brotherhood of breath." Featuring Bernard Vitet on trumpet, Dani?le Dumas and Sylvain Kassap on saxophones, Jean-Louis Le Vallegant and Philippe Le Strat on bombards. With hints of modal jazz inspired by Coltrane or Pharoah Sanders, the Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra is an ecumenical project which speaks to the whole world.

ERICKSON AND THE ALIENS, ROKY The Modern Humans' Show LP
"This, one of the greatest radio shows ever made onto a record as it combines a Radio interview with Roky Erickson in full gloom while he is presenting the demos of tracks that may ended up on the great The Evil One LP. Earlier versions of 'Mine Mine Mind,' 'Two Headed Dog,' and 'Click Your Fingers' applauding the play previously released on vinyl by France's Sponge Records in 1976. The bonuses (interviews, demos, rarities) are dandy, but the album is treasure enough. Its retro-metal chops have more kaboom than the irony-diluted pap of current poseurs, and its bent lyrics mop the floor with wannabe-kooks like Jad Fair. Some savvy touches- such as Roky's progressive pre-PC designation that the swamp monsters are 'alligator-persons' -- hint that Roky was more lucid than he let on."

SPACEMEN 3 Recurring LP
2024 repress. "1990's Recurring, the fourth and final studio album by Spacemen 3, is often considered the introduction of two brilliant solo projects (Spectrum and Spiritualized) rather than the work of a functioning band. While Spacemen 3's departing statement surely reveals a deep divide within the S3 camp -- each side of the LP was written by Sonic Boom and Jason Pierce separately and, unlike previous releases, the two do not play on each other's songs -- Recurring maintains a cohesive, dreamy feel with its chief sonic officers backed by fellow travelers Will Carruthers, Mark Refoy and Jon Mattock. Opening saga 'Big City (Everybody I Know Can Be Found Here)' marries ambient haze with narcotized indie rock, while 'I Love You' manages to arrange a beautiful flute alongside a defiantly throbbing bass track. 'Hypnotized,' a reimagined fuzz-pop hymn, would become the group's first entry in the UK Singles Charts. Recurring lays bare the essence of Spacemen 3's persistent sound, rooted in both aural expansion and phenomenal songwriting. Includes download card and new insert with liner notes by Marc Masters."

LEONARDI, GIUSEPPE 7 12"
There has been some waiting for new music by Giuseppe Leonardi since his highly-praised releases for Second Circle, and now the waiting is over. Seven amazing tracks form the aptly titled mini-album 7, out now on Unsure. 7 starts with the in-every-way-unexpected "Suzi Wong," a highly addictive (and unusual) kind of reggae-and-dub-influenced mutant disco adventure with amazing vocals and unbelievably tripping grooves. "Anti-Narcotics Police" follows this road of raw and playful coolness, but Giuseppe of course has way more to offer: "Both" and "Rrrrrrr" are uplifting house music with a quirky touch of pop, the compelling rhythms and basslines of "Wonder Girls" and "Wondering" remind a little of Stefan Schwanders new thing While My Sequencer Gently Bleeps and the funkiness and sweetness of Deadline and its magical melodies brighten the gloomiest day. A unique pleasure!

GRUPO DE IMPROVISACION TERCER MUNDO Un Hilo De Luz LP
Unknown spiritual jazz gem recorded in Argentina in the '80s, under the influence of Pharoah Sanders, Don Cherry, Archie Shepp, and originally released on Litto Nebbia?s label Melopea. Already supported by Gilles Peterson on his radio show, this mind-blowing album combines ethno-free jazz passages and deep progressive compositions led by saxophonist Marcelo Peralta resulting a very impressive ode to the legacy of Coltrane. This is the first and only album ever released by this band, Grupo de Improvisaci?n Tercer Mundo ("Third World Improvisation Group"), formed by a quartet of young musicians based in Buenos Aires accompanied by drummer Norberto Minchillo (L?pez F?rst, Fernando Gelbard, Jorge Navarro) and Litto Nebbia himself during the recording sessions. They would also organize weekly jam sessions in public spaces in Buenos Aires, getting visual artists, poets and even passersby involved in these communal actions that aimed to promote self-expression in an environment of total freedom. After the gigs they'd gather again for intense listening sessions of deep jazz for hours. "Almas Liberadas" and "Un Hilo de Luz" sound as a clear tribute to Pharoah Sanders, as the subtitle of the latter openly states. First time reissue. Includes extensive notes and many previously unpublished photos.

ORQUESTA OLIVIERI Orquesta Olivieri LP
The self-titled Orquesta Olivieri appeared in 1972, just when the Fania Records revolution, powerfully controlling the salsa business, was reaching its peak. It disappeared for good, sadly representing the last production by this band. This 1972 album reflects the years when salsa was exploding In New York City, and, for that matter, Latin America altogether. Produced by Bobby Marin, an experienced go-to man in Latin Music, especially Afro-Caribbean sounds, was released by Pavilion Records, a NYC restaurant related label. This was actually the only album ever released by this, very short-lived label. Side A opens with the slow-paced Latin soul song "There is No Other Girl," that style-wise connects to their previous LP, released when the boogaloo trend was still around. In fact, this song had been previously released two years earlier on a 45 and was then overdubbed (adding an organ on top) for this LP version. The song is very much in demand these days in the lowrider soul scene due to the breath-taking vocal harmonies and appealing production. The album also comprises spicy guaguanc?s on "Cuando llegu? a Borinquen," the classic "Los Muchachos de Bel?n" and "Tabaritiando." There is also room for a cha-cha-ch?, "Mar?a Isabel," and a guaracha "Perrito sabueso," and the album closes with the Latin soul ballad "Prefer? perderte," interpreted in Spanish. First time official reissue.

GHETTO BROTHERS Got This Happy Feeling/Girl From the Mountain 7"
The Bronx in the 1970s, marked by the presence of notorious gangs, presented a complex and challenging urban landscape reflected in abandoned buildings and neglected public spaces. The prevalence of street gangs, such as the Ghetto Brothers, contributed to an atmosphere of heightened tension and occasional violence. The Ghetto Brothers, originating from the Melendez family who moved from Puerto Rico to the South Bronx in the 1950s, faced challenges involving violence and crime. Despite this, Benjy Melendez, a key figure, directed the group towards community improvement. The Ghetto Brothers embraced music, crafting a potent, NYC-flavored musical fusion that caught the attention of record mogul Ismael Maisonave (Salsa Records). Their collaboration resulted in the recording of eight tracks in a single electrifying day at Manhattan's Fine Tone Studios, skillfully produced by Latin studio maestro Bobby Marin (Harvey Averne, La Lupe, Brooklyn Sounds), one of the best Latin funk albums ever recorded. This musical odyssey showcases the band's ability to seamlessly blend genres, creating a NYC-flavored stew that captivates listeners with its authenticity. The two tracks on this single, stand out songs from the LP, are a perfect representation of the Ghetto Brothers sound. "Got This Happy Feeling" is an upbeat number with heavy Latin funk grooves, while "Girl From the Mountain" is a highly addictive mid-tempo soulful ballad. These tracks are a vibrant tapestry, weaving together the raw energy of the South Bronx streets and the soulful melodies born from the band's Puerto Rican heritage.

KUBOTA & THE SUNSET GANG, MAKOTO Hawaii Champroo LP
2024 restock. Wewantsounds announce an ambitious Makoto Kubota reissue program with his three albums recorded with The Sunset Gang between 1973 and 1977. The albums feature Haruomi Hosono (who also co-produced Hawaii Champroo) and also includes Minako Yoshida, Taeko Ohnuki and Tatsuo Hayachi to name a few. Makoto Kubota has been one of Japan's true musical innovators and following his involvement with Les Rallizes D?nud?s in the early '70s, he developed a unique sound bringing American, Hawaiian and Okinawan music influences to his own Japanese folk music mix. Recorded in Honolulu in 1975. Recorded in 1975 at the famed Sounds of Hawaii studio in Honolulu, Hawaii Champroo was co-produced by Haruomi Hosono and marks the start of Kubota's keen interest in Hawaiian and Okinawan music (Champroo is derived from Chanpur?, the traditional Okinawan stir-fry dish). A companion album to Hosono's own Tropical Dandy and Bon Voyage Co. albums (on which Kubota plays), the album was at the forefront of a tropical musical movement started in Japan in the mid-70s. The core Sunset Gang consists of Kubota on Guitar, Takashi Onzo on bass, Yosuke Fujita on guitars and mandolin, Keni Inoue on lead guitar and Hiroki Komazawa on pedal steel guitar. They are joined on the album by Hosono on drums and Teriyuki Kokubu on piano. Having travelled to the United States in the early '70s, Makoto Kubota had fallen in love with American music and had brought back many influences from his sojourn on the East and West coast. these are evident from the tracks covered by the band on Hawaii Champroo, including Jesse Fuller's "San Francisco Blues", The Rooftop Singers' "Walk Right In" (an old Gus Cannon ragtime) or The Texas Playboys' classic "Steel Guitar Rag". Hawaii Champroo also features originals such as the funky "Shanghai Gaeri" and a nod to the Hula Hawaiian dance "Moonlight Hula". One of the highlights of the album is the classic "Haisai Ozisan", the Okinawan 1972 cult classic by Shoukichi Kina which has become a standard in Japan. All in all, Hawaii Champroo is a timeless classic and one of the key Japanese albums from the '70s. This is the first time the albums are released outside of Japan. Newly remastered by Makoto Kubota. Comes with original artwork, OBI and the original Japanese inserts.

HAFEZ, ABDEL HALIM Mawood LP
2024 restock. Wewantsounds reissue Mawood one of the cornerstones of Egyptian music, recorded in 1971 by legendary Arabic singer Abdel Halim Hafez. Famously sampled by Jay-Z on "Big Pimpin'", Hafez is captured here live with his full orchestra including Omar Khorshid on guitar. The album mixes traditional Arabic music with modern instrumentation and shades of '70s groove. "Mawood" is one of Hafez's all-time classics, written by the legendary composer Baligh Hamdi. Alongside Oum Kalthoum, Warda, Farid el Atrache, and Mohammed Abdel Wahab, Hafez revolutionized Egyptian music and became a hugely popular star across the whole Arab world. Blessed with striking good looks, Abdel Halim Hafez started his career in the early '50s and quickly attracted the attention of one of the Egyptian radio's A&Rs who took him under his wing and invited him to perform on the radio. His career went from strength to strength and from 1953, he was associated with the Egyptian revolution led by Nasser. His music mixing tradition and modernity made him one of the most loved singers of the 1950s as he developed a romantic edge that became his signature style (he was dubbed "the dark-skinned nightingale"). In the mid-50s, hot on the heels of his success in music, he launched his acting career in the thriving Egyptian film industry and also became a hugely popular actor. Hafez worked with the greatest composers of their time including Mohammed Abdel Wahab and Baligh Hamdi. Recorded live in 1971, "Mawood" is one of the singer's most recognizable standards. The song stretches over the two sides of the album and consists of several sections alternating instrumental parts and sung ones. The song, written by Egyptian poet Mohamed Hamza, sees Hafez talking to his heart, apologizing for driving it from failure to failure and concluding that, to find solace, one must keep love at bay. He's backed by his full orchestra featuring traditional instrumentation and those powerful strings that influenced the likes of Jean-Claude Vannier, together with modern instrumentation including organ and electric guitar by Omar Khorshid adding his unmissable twang to the ensemble. Mawood mixes tradition and modernity and develops into a hypnotic epic full of groove with a superb soulful performance by one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. Remastered for vinyl; features the original LP artwork with a two-page insert featuring new liner notes (English/French) by Mario Choueiry (IMA, Paris).
