BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE My Bloody Underground 2LP
2022 repress, black vinyl. Gatefold 2LP version on 180 gram vinyl. 2013 release. This is the first Brian Jonestown Massacre album in over four years, recorded with select members from the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Icelandic musicians, and Mark Gardener (Ride). Recorded in Liverpool and Reykjavik in August 2007 and completed in Reykjavik in October 2007. This is the 13th full-length album from the Brian Jonestown Massacre released on Anton's label, A Recordings. This album offers a mix of the traditional Brian Jonestown Massacre sound with a more experimental and avant-garde approach. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist/singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995, The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp! Records, the label which gave them their start, and later for TVT and Tee Pee. BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many L.A. and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE The Brian Jonestown Massacre LP
2022 repress. black vinyl; superb deluxe packaging. The Brian Jonestown Massacre burst into 2019 with the release of their 18th full-length album, just seven months after their last one, Something Else (AUK 043CD/LP). The self-titled, nine-track album is released on Anton Newcombe's A Recordings, and it was recorded and produced at Anton's Cobra Studio in Berlin. The album was originally going to be released in September of 2018, but due to a hugely successful global tour -- taking in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe -- the release was delayed. Recorded in early 2018, the album features Sara Neidorf on drums, Heike Marie Radeker (LeVent) on bass, Hakon Adalsteinsson (BJM, Third Sound, Gunman, Holy Ghost) on guitar, and Anton Newcombe on multiple instruments. Also making a guest vocal appearance on "Tombes Oubliées" is Rike Bienert who has sung on previous BJM albums. The band performed songs from the album throughout the European leg of the 2018 tour. Anton Newcombe has been a very busy man over the past few years, having released four critically-acclaimed Brian Jonestown Massacre albums and an EP, one soundtrack album, and two albums with Tess Parks. All releases were fully recorded and produced at Anton's studio. The Brian Jonestown Massacre track "Bon Bon" was used in the 2015 Palm D'Or winner Dheepan. Anton penned the soundtrack for Moon Dogs, a film directed by multi-BAFTA nominated Philip John (Svengali, Downton Abbey, Being Human).

MYSTIC AM Cardamom & Laudanum 2LP
Emerging from a thick spiraling haze is the debut album from Mystic AM, a new project from Rod Modell and label founder Ario Farahani. Conceived as an immersive fictional soundtrack piece, the release tells the story of a traveler, some centuries ago, and the rather intense metaphysical experience he unexpectedly stumbles into whilst taking shelter on a hot desert night at Zein-o-Din Caravanserai, near Yazd in Persia. Dusk envelopes the vast barren landscape as the protagonist enters the ribat, treasures of woven silks, ornaments, and exotic spices glint under the flickering oil lamps, swirls of perfumed vapor dance mesmerizingly in the darkness. As the music unfolds the events of the passing day quickly melt away, and the unsuspecting traveler is plunged into an otherworldly dimension. Utilizing an extensive collection of old Iranian records as source material, the album is an intoxicating mise-en-scéne of whispering melodies, undulating rhythms, and atmospheric sound details. An active buyer of old Iranian music, Ario began extracting and editing samples from the records acquired during frequent trips to Iran over recent years -- during which the mood and flavor of the project began to crystallize. Once handed over to Rod for further processing and arrangement, the album took its final shape -- an endless tapestry of sights, sounds, and memories that fade mysteriously into the night's reveries. Textures seep into one another in washes of color, and hallmarks of classical Persian sounds filter through -- the slow stroll of the scintillating runs of santoor, and solitary lines drifting out of the kamancheh. Bridging the realms of the real and the imaginary, the collaboration signals the first contribution to Mystic AM's enigmatic concept.

BLOMFELT & NARBY Peter, Barbara, Beth & Friends LP
Atomnation marks its 100th release with Peter, Barbara, Beth & Friends, the stunning debut album from Blomfelt & Narby. The immersive nine-track record is a widescreen listen that fuses acoustic and electronic sounds with loose field recordings and tightly programmed drums. Finnish-born Henrik Blomfelt grew up in Gaspar Narby's homeland of Switzerland, but the pair met on the dancefloor of a pool club in Peckham while studying in London. Gaspar's indie pop solo project was rewarded with a broad sweep of tastemaker tips from new music and electronica media alike, while Henrik had co-founded Resolution, an audio-visual collective and event series. The two eventually moved in together, but it's only a couple of years later, when Gaspar visited Henrik's homeland of Finland, that they began making music together. They wrote half of the tracks that appear on the LP there, using an old piano, a cassette recorder found on location, and their laptops. The second half was finished back in London.

COMELADE, PASCAL Le Non-Sens Du Rythme CD
Following Le Cut-Up Populaire (BEC 5676465/5676466, 2020), Pascal Comelade announces the release of his new album Le Non-Sens Du Rythme. Since his first record published in 1975, Pascal Comelade, a child of the frenzy rock of the '60s and '70s, has developed a profuse body of work including many musical collaborations (PJ Harvey, Robert Wyatt, Jaki Liebezeit (Can), Lee Ranaldo, The Liminanas...) and non-musical collaborations (Jeanne Moreau, Sergi Lopez, Jean François Stévenin, Bob Wilson...) His compositions are reminiscent of MC5, Erik Satie, Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone, Suicide: a language that dances on a musical skeleton in perpetual movement by successive fusions, mixing folklore and underground, repetitive music and French chanson, pataphysical riffs and toy instruments. As a multiple artist, he has developed an aesthetic approach via a particular link to visual arts. He draws, paints and occasionally performs with painters Miquel Barcelo and Hervé Di Rosa. On his new album, Le Non-Sens Du Rythme (to be translated "the nonsense of rhythm", the title says it all), Pascal Comelade almost plays all the instruments, not only multiple pianos but also the Rickenbaker e.bass, the Indian Harmonium, various keyboards, and even the tin can. He remains the undisputed master of the instrumental ritornello inspired by popular music as well as krautrock.

SLATER, SAM I Do Not Wish To Be Known As A Vandal CD
Sam Slater is a two-time Grammy Award-winning composer, sound designer, and music producer, who since 2013 has been busy working on a range of projects behind the scenes for screen, stage, live and recorded mediums. His new album, I Do Not Wish To Be Known As A Vandal, is released via Bedroom Community. Receiving the awards for his roles as both score producer and musical sound designer on the box office smash Joker (2019) and the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning drama series, Chernobyl (2019), Slater is a frequent collaborator with acclaimed Icelandic musician/composer, Hildur Guðnadóttir. He has produced, mixed and engineered projects for artists including Jóhann Jóhannsson, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Colin Stetson, Ben Frost, Valgeir Sigurðsson, Mica Levi, and more. When it came to the recording of I Do Not Wish To Be Known As A Vandal, Slater called on a number of creative forces. Recorded remotely, each musician would send a sound, some words, some creative parameters, and Slater would respond in turn. Hildur Guðnadóttir provided distinct Doro phone sounds, Yair Glotman played thunderous double-bass, and Hilary Jeffrey and Sam Dunscombe laid down woodwind and microtonal brass. In addition, Icelandic singer-songwriter JFDR delivered her intimate vocals and James Ginzburg (Emptyset) mixed it, with an ear for precise form. From his base in Berlin, Slater would flag the sounds he loved; some twitching strings, the stolen alto voice from an abandoned English chorale, some words from a climate scientist fleshed into a poem. It became an exercise in receptivity, in which openness itself became a creative voice, hushing Slater's tendency to micromanage every detail. The album showcases the breadth of Slater's range as composer and producer, transitioning through distinctly different spaces, from the glitchy, clipped intro, into Icelandic folktronica, into swathes of menacing string mutations and eerie, mournful woodwind.

TELEFON TEL AVIV Immolate Yourself LP
2022 repress on vinyl. This is the third full-length album by Chicago's Telefon Tel Aviv (Joshua Eustis and Charles Cooper), and their first for BPitch Control. Immolate Yourself unites ten tracks with the aim to give the term "electro-pop" a new definition for the year 2009. Although each track has its own story to tell, together they paint a bigger picture that encapsulates the Telefon Tel Aviv sound. Arguably the album's standout track "Helen of Troy" -- a driving, moody and muddled piece, full of '80s aesthetics, vintage synths and low, romantic vocals -- was in fact the last track to be finished, and in a way, marked the climax and formed the basis of the whole work. With this release, Telefon Tel Aviv make a statement that combines popular dance music with their own darker reflections on the electronic sound universe.

OULTON, QUINN Alexithymia LP
Quinn Oulton's debut album Alexithymia is a deconstruction of the struggle that many young men face when processing and expressing strong emotions. It takes the form of a linear story, pieced together from many moments of emotional intensity Quinn has faced throughout his life, existing within all types of personal relationships. This is a project that sees the stylistic and textural experimentation from his previous work fuse into a powerfully creative, personal, and emotive sound, channeling the album's title name: "Alexithymia" is the inability to recognize or describe one's own emotions. The album was written, performed and co-produced by Quinn Oulton, and it includes tracks featuring Moses Boyd and Genevieve Artadi.Oulton: "My album Alexithymia dissects events from different relationships, whether family, friends, or romantic, presented as a single story from start to finish. Obsession, frustration, passion, false hope, grief, self-pity, helplessness, and acceptance are all part of this story. I wrote it in this way because I was trying to work out why I connect so much with sad or melancholic music, and I realized that maybe listening to that music was filling a hole that I didn't know I had. It was comforting to hear somebody process their own troubles outwardly when I didn't feel I had a way, or even a reason, to do so myself. Writing the album has been an extremely therapeutic process as I've been able to seek out difficult parts of my life that I'd buried because I couldn't process them at the time. I think a lot of people, particularly men, struggle to recognize and process their own emotions. It makes it very hard to share them with others, and it's something that needs addressing to allow for healthier relationships with other people and yourself."

VA Pra Quem Sabe Das Coisas LP
Repressed; reissue, originally released in 1973. One of the rarest and most enigmatic LPs in the Brazilian discography, Pra? Quem Sabe das Coisas is a collective album that gathered a group of students from São Paulo Law School, supported by the organist/pianist Renato Mendes, one of samba-jazz's most important names. Released in 1973 by the label EBRAU, finally has a refined reissue and its mysteries revealed, exactly half a century later, considering that it was recorded in 1971 but put in the market as LP only two years later. Reissue includes original insert replica with lyrics and an extra insert with unseen photos and an exclusive interview that the journalist and researcher Marcelo Pinheiro did with Cau Pimentel adding even more to the richness of this workpiece, composed by many writers and performers in 1971. Features Cau, Liliana, Renato Mendes, Marcão, Eulalia, and Vera.According to Disk Union/Think Records (released CD reissue of this record): "Mysterious acid bossa psychedelic folk masterpiece recorded in 1971 and released in 1973 on a small Brazilian label. Recorded by students of the law school in São Paulo, under the influence of Sgt. Pepper's mixed with bossa nova. It's a chaotic yet delicate and sophisticated. I can't imagine it being composed or recorded by amateur musicians that they were, except by Renato Mendes, who has been active as a first-class musician since the jazz bossa period and was a Brazilian pioneer recording an album using a Moog synthesizer in 1974. It can be said that it greatly contributes to the miraculous perfection of this work. Known among record collectors as a record that attracts not only Brazilian music fans but also psychedelic and acid folk fans, the original version is a gem and sells for over USD1000."

PERRY & SUBATOMIC SOUND SYSTEM, LEE "SCRATCH" Super Ape Returns To Conquer (Lilac Vinyl) LP
2022 repress. Lilac color vinyl. 41 years later, Lee "Scratch" Perry uses today's sound system to revisit his classic Black Ark album that defined Jamaican dub music, reincarnating the magic for the sound system generation. Big question about it: "How do you improve on a masterpiece?" Lee "Scratch" Perry defined dub music with his seminal 1976 Super Ape album, and he returns with New York City's Subatomic Sound System to conquer again, definitively reincarnating the magic of his Black Ark studio in Jamaica, heavy on Ethiopian horns and percussion, while reinvigorating it with the 21st century booming bass and beats that capture the energy of their innovative live electronic show. Largely known as the mentor to Bob Marley, Perry's influence has transcended reggae. Since 2010, he has toured with NYC's Subatomic Sound System, his go-to band for recreating his Black Ark studio sound live on stage, in new exciting ways as a one-of-a-kind hybrid of beat heavy electronics and live musicians, including original Black Ark studio percussionist Larry McDonald. Subatomic Sound System has been pushing the envelope of electronic music in combination with reggae since their inception in 1999. In dub, Lee "Scratch" Perry is a star at organizing and remixing the music with drum and bass in the forefront and tweaking knobs and faders, adding effects like a jazz improvisation. In the 1970s, the idea of a producer as a star, rather than a singer or musician, seemed crazy, but looking across the world of star DJ producers, he is rightly acknowledged as a visionary as well. There are many stories to be told, but this album follows on the mission of the tour which has the goal of reaching out to old fans and new fans. As sound system culture continues to expand globally with reggae and beyond, these are DJ-friendly heavyweight versions of Scratch material that makes sense in the 21st century. "Scratch" started his music career as a dancer so he loves to get a party started even at 81. The album shows that Scratch was 40 years ahead of his time with Super Ape, and that at 81, he's more relevant to youth culture than ever. The original "Burning Man", "Scratch" was called "the Salvador Dali of music" by Keith Richards and Bounty Killer hailed him as "the greatest Jamaican artist of all time". Features: Jahdan Blakkamoore, Screechy Dan, and Ari Up of The Slits.

DUB SPENCER & TRANCE HILL Imago Cells LP
LP version. Dub Spencer & Trance Hill have been in the music business for about 20 years and are still as hungry as a caterpillar in the leaf forest. Supposedly, the dub component always dominated, no matter if it was humorously-intelligently mixed with Christmas songs, spoken words or Italo Western. But the electronic, the psychedelic, the "trance" always played an important role in the work of the Europe-wide known Swiss band. Now, finally, this facet gets its due place on the new, 12th long-player of the quartet: Imago Cells is the name of the album and marks a metamorphosis. So out of the old arises the new, and so the dub merges with electronic dance music or better: "trance music". The tracks are clearly in the sign of the up-tempo and invite a rave. Furthermore, the sound has become even more bassy and psychedelic, but without losing the organic touch. So bubbling, echoing and grooving then the eight songs beastly good, sound unmistakably like Dub Spencer & Trance Hill and at the same time you understand that the only way is the new. A truly magical moment, like the birth of the butterfly.

ROOTLESS What The Truth Leaves Out Cassette
"Rootless (or, more properly, rootless) is a solo project that's been going for better than five years now, helmed by Brooklyn's Jeremy Hurewitz. Two types of sounds are created under this banner -- low key electronics is one, and fingerpicked acoustic guitar is the other. what the truth leaves out focuses on the latter. The shared thread between these styles is a highly personal and intimate feel. When listening to rootless, you often get the sense this is music created solely for the pleasure of the artist himself. The aura of introspection is as deep as the night, so it's possible to almost feel like a voyeur while listening in. But hey, Jeremy sent us this stuff to hear, so we played it and asked him if he'd let us put it out, and like a true gentleman he agreed. The music goes in a couple of directions. Some of the pieces are patchworks of small, beautiful sonic fields. They possess mixed flashes of sunlight seen through smoke and are laced together with complete melodic threads. Other pieces are less attuned to resolution. They're more like questions left unanswered, and these questions are posed in a variety of languages. You can hear bits of Chadbournian flamenco fake-outs, circular breathing as done by fingers, and even a snippet of the wandering teacup raga if I'm not mistaken. The music of rootless manages to communicate and keep its secrets at the same time. Even when it gets abstract, there are obvious emotions powering everything. Like private performance for the public good. I'm not sure if this's driven by altruism or sheer cussedness, but whatever the root of the rootless sound, I'm a fan." --Byron Coley, 2022

MORE KLEMENTINES Who Remembers Light LP
"Four years after their magnificent, eponymous debut, this Connecticut trio returns to vinyl with another brain-blurring set of tunes. Picking up where that last LP left off, drummer Michael Kiefer, guitarist/vocalist Jon Schlesinger and guitarist/bassist/mandolinist/electronics/mark tree-rep, Steubs, dig ever deeper into the pulse of the Earth. The first track here, 'Hot Peace,' sounds like stuttering, shimmering emanations from the core of the planet. Remember that episode of the Superman TV show, where mole men come up out of the world's deepest oil well? The instrumental parts of this album remind me of those little dudes. Because everything they touched started glowing. And even though one gets the feeling there's more than a soupçon of anger in the way More Klementines attack their instruments, who amongst us doesn't believe a little glowing psychedelic aggression is called for in this dismal day and age? The two instrumentals on the flip have more pastoral flows. Guitar tones whirl off into the aether the way piss flies from a carousel, but the way the drops hit your skin makes them feel like beads of the purest dew, quivering in extreme close-up as you squint in the sunlight to make them out. But just when you think the drugs have totally taken over, a searing sequence of riffs emerge that make you sit up straight, so the drums can slap your head back and forth. Indeed, much of this album seesaws between the poles of abstraction and focus. Just like tripping! There's also one vocal track, 'Key of Caesar,' which has lyrics I can't figure out, but makes me think of Bob Pollard doing a blues tune based on 'Take the Skinheads Bowling.' Which is just the kind of thing he might do if he'd deign to swap his frosty mug for a sugar cube. Which ain't happening this week. But Who Remembers Light is happening right now and will continue to do so every time you slap it on the box. Which should be often." --Byron Coley, 2022

NAUJAWANAN BAIDAR Volume 1 & 2 2LP
2022 limited repress. Cardinal Fuzz and Feeding Tube Records release Naujawanana Baidar's Volume 1 & 2 as a double-LP vinyl. Naujawanan Baidar (Farsi for Enlightened Youth) is the project of artist and musician N.R. Safi (The Myrrors). With roots in the now-endangered sounds of 1960s-80s Afghan cassette culture, Naujawanan Baidar filters the traditional music of Safi's paternal heritage through a labyrinth of buzzing drones, tape manipulation, and fuzz-drenched percussion, warping both traditional and popular forms into a tangled mass of tape-saturated noise inspired by the very medium that once carried them. Traditional folk instruments (both acoustic and home-amplified) like the rubab, armonia, sorna, and tabla, twist and melt into blown-out electrical storms, proving that one does not necessarily need guitars or any other standard western instrumentation to channel the trance-like energy of rock and roll. Although the end results may sound far removed from the original artists that helped inspired them (legendary performers like Ahmad Zahir, Beltoon and Hamidullah, or Salma Jahani) there is something to be said for this "new" or "imagined" form of contemporary Afghan experimental music. Had the dusty backstreets of pre-war Kabul birthed an experimental music scene paralleling German's krautrock movement, one can imagine that the results might have sounded a little something like this. These tracks were cut over the course of 2017 to 2019 as a sort of sonic notebook, documenting the evolution of the project as it first took shape. Though the majority were originally conceived of as nothing more than demos or impressionistic sketches, the spontaneous and ramshackle approach of the tapes was eventually deemed more than befitting the spirit of the project. Naujawanan Baidar both reaffirms its ties to a relatively hidden (to outside eyes at least) cultural history while at the same time pushing outwards into new and unexplored territories. Originally released via Radio Khiyaban on cassette (the packaging and artwork on both cassette releases was a direct homage to 1970s Afghan tape design).

TYLER, CATH & PHIL The Song-Crowned King CD
2015 release. "This beautifully spare new release from the American-British duo (based in England) has been a long time promised, but even with only six tracks, it backs more powerful punches that albums three times the length. It's a reminder of how powerful folk music can be, and helps cement the bonds between England and that place across the Atlantic. Cath especially, does plenty of work in the shape note tradition, and the mix of music richness and austerity in that is evident here; they use just a little to say a lot. The opener, 'Bonnie George Campbell,' for instance, is voice, guitar and some Dobro, immediately followed by a tune on unaccompanied fiddle. There's a hymnal quality to it all (one of the pieces is a hymn put to a new tune), but also a very dark, brooding intensity that brings its own beauty. There are parallels between this duo and Cordelia's Dad, hardly surprising as Cath was (is?) a member of that band, and Phil played with them on UK tours. But they've taken that root in a different direction. Just as stripped-down, with a power that hits to the core. And everything comes across as so raw, so offhand, that it hides the fact that everything is superbly prepared and thought-out (the subtle, tiny atmospherics on 'Old Lady' offer a perfect example). The irony is that while this wouldn't sound out of place somewhere in the 19th century, it bristles with the kind of channeled intensity that's absolutely punk, in the best sense. Less is definitely more here." --Chris Nickson

BAD AMPUTEE Convenience Kills CD
"Yes, slowcore. That tag will probably bring to mind a very specific moment in '90s American underground music -- think Low, Codeine, etc. -- and while that's clearly the well Bad Amputee are supping from, this is a very English take on the approach... Convenience Kills on the whole has that kind of feel of a musical golden hour... The effect... is trancelike, the music seems to suspend time somehow as it draws you in. Highlight 'Rhona' is the prime example, making nearly nine minutes feel like about three, as you lose yourself in a simple timeless melody." --The Sleeping Shaman"An undiluted portrait of an under-the-radar treasure, it's the type of song cycle that'd provide balm for the soul and scope to lose oneself during any fall period." --IPA Music"This is an excellent release, you don't really hear much music in this fashion any more that is as perfectly constructed as this." --Collective Zine"Songs glide, develop and build beautifully. The album provides clear evidence of the importance of space and pace, not just notes, chords and silence... I continue to play this album and wonder in near awe at it. I cannot give it too high a recommendation." --TQ

DIRTEE CURT Dry Water Wet Land LP
Dry Water Wet Land is the debut album by underground Detroit rapper Dirtee Curt, set for release by Australian based label Fifty Records. Featuring production and features from fellow Butter Made colleagues, the album pairs Curt's raw delivery and personal lyricism with faithfully innovative, late '90s/early '00s inspired, sample-laden hip-hop. From the moment you hear Dry Water Wet Land, you'll know that Dirtee Curt has experienced a lot and been on quite a journey. A few journeys, actually. In discussing the album, he says, "It took forever and a day but it's been a learning experience more than anything," adding "I'm telling my life story... without telling it." The appropriately titled album intro, "Opening Act", is a listener's smorgasbord of events, surrounded by people asking him various questions and, in some cases, asking for favors. Throughout the process, Curt remains mostly unfazed. This especially rings true on "Daily Grind", where he states on the opening bars "Dirt Curt in the building, far from makin' a million/But makin' it do with the little that I got." At that point, you can just put your seatbelt on and zone out. Features Smoke, Joel "Fluent" Greene, and Audopilots.

Chef Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx remains firmly planted as one of the defining triumphs in their artistic legacy. The oft referred 'Purple Tape' has been cited and debated by many as the greatest Wu-Tang solo project to date and remains a bullet point in any discussion involving the greatest 'cocaine rap' or 'street hop' albums of all time. SHEER And Then There Were Four LP
Featuring Andre Innes, Martin Duffy and Darren Mooney of Primal Scream. "In 2018 after a particularly messy session involving Pacharan, a Spanish version of Pernod, the name and then there were four was bandied around as my fellow travelers fell by the wayside, sounded like a Spaghetti western -- and the idea was hatched. We began recording in Artesonao studios in Malaga, myself and Ed Chapman, a renowned English artist, we were ably assisted by Rachel Hewitt on violin we recorded a dozen or so tunes in a week. We recruited the services of Darrin Mooney and Martin Duffy of Primal Scream on drums and keys, Andrew Innes of Primal Scream assisted on additional guitars, celeste and bells -- lots of bells. Robert McGovern came out to Malaga to play on a few tracks also. We had the voice of Justine Petty -- Burrows a Canadian chanteuse to be a foil to my less than acrobatic voice. The record was a return to my favorite music of my youth, soaking up Dylan, Scott Walker, Tim Buckley, Tim Rose, Tim Hardin, and the soundtracks of Morricone, like an old compilation tape from 1986." --Sheer Taft, 2022

TERIAEVA, MARIA Conservatory of Flowers LP
2020 release. Conservatory of Flowers is the second album by a Siberian-born, Moscow-based musician and composer Maria Teriaeva. Following her solo debut Focus in 2017, Conservatory of Flowers focuses on rhythm and percussive elements, cutting down ambient passages and leaning even more toward traditional song forms, structuring compositions into pop-length pieces. Recorded over a period of three years, mostly composed during one summer at her dacha (cottage in Russian) just outside of Moscow, resulting in a vibrant and light sound inspired by her surrounding nature. In addition to analog synthesizer, the album also features Nikita Shishkov on trumpet, Vasiliy Yanik on saxophone, Yana Chekina on cello, Sasha Elina on flute, and Vadik Korolev on vocals, with the album closing off with a remix by Sapphire Slows.

VARGAS, MORITA 8 LP
2021 release. artist and producer based in Buenos Aires. She manipulates her voice through reverbs, delays, and whispers, singing in a self-invented "language". The sound of Morita's voice is a portal into her thriving, dreamlike world brimming, shimmering and beating with unrefined natural sensations which stimulate something primordial yet strangely contemporary. As far back as 2014 she began work on her first productions -- early sketches which later became the basis for 8. It all started off as voice memos on her phone (recorded while roaming the streets and riding the trains of Greater Buenos Aires). Later on, Morita introduced various instruments into her vision: kalimba, harmonica, keyboard, flute, tambourine, chajchas, and cajón. Composed and performed from that period until its original release in 2018, 8 features ten original voice-led compositions that in scope recall evocative portraits of synthesized landscapes and rainforests, attuned to a vibrant modern pulse and enchanting vocals. Morita Vargas's 8 has achieved a kind of polyphonic soundscape which evokes unfamiliar realities through voyages within and between the realms of ambient and experimental music. In numerology the number "8" symbolizes the transition between heaven and earth, the illumination of our infinite capacity for various metamorphoses. Tackling ideas of transformation, mutation, cyclical processes, death, creation, melancholy, and joy, the album is a monumental and deeply personal statement. Walk barefoot down the mystical path and indulge in the process of spiritual expulsion and renewal that is 8. The path lies along the route of infinite meanings, somewhere on the border between dream and reality. 180 gram vinyl. Edition of 1000 numbered copies. Die-cut outer sleeve, color print inner sleeve + poly-liner sleeves.

CORDOVA, RAMONA Naive LP
Ramona Córdova on Naïve: "When I first started working on Naïve I was completely consumed by all of the technical details involved in making a 'professional studio recording' on my own -- one which could not be refuted or disregarded as subpar. My only other hope was to tell some sort of story with whichever songs I could piece together. The content and message of which were much less important to me. The story that Naïve ended up telling comes from a cohesion of themes, ceaseless in my personal experiences living day to day in the world. Although the album dares to tread on tact while speaking poetically and lyrically about issues such as systemic oppression, racism, misogyny, policing, and patriarchy -- I think the album really just wants to reflect -- to serve as a reflection -- in order to foster healing and healthy growth towards maturing. I feel it commanding a kind of firm kindness as a reminder to love yourself enough to accept others, by way of accepting yourself. Pressed onto this 180-gram vinyl are ten songs I wrote while living in many different places around the world. Spontaneous recordings of inspired notions of song, written one rainy evening up high above the vineyards in Banyuls-sur-Mer became 'Men on the Mountain'. A scrap of paper holding jots about a sudden storm on a hot day in August while helping friends on their farm in Puglia became 'Mouth of Autumn' and 'Peace Through Violence'. As I dressed myself into the fragile reality of the United States, I became flooded by its manipulative social governing systems. As the monuments of slave-owners, colonizers, and white supremacists came crashing down in the name of responsibility and accountability, 'The Bridge Works' was built, a song about crossing bridges towards empathy and equality. Civil rights activist and American-football quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, taking the knee during the United States national anthem pre-game ceremony, brought about 'So Long'. The incessant murdering of black, brown, and transgender citizens brought 'Woke', 'Scared I'll Bite You', and 'The End'. The murder of Eric Garner and the feeling of being choked-out and suffocated under the weight of systemic oppression brought about 'Still'. From all of this birthed the collection of songs that is Naïve, a title given to the album by French Ghanian artist Eden Tinto Collins. Although written both in Europe and the U.S., most of the songs were performed and recorded at the end of the year 2018 in Philadelphia, during the American-holidays season..."

VINOGRADOVA & ALINA ANUFRIENKO, SASHA Oko LP
The music on Oko is conceptually woven into an evolving sonic tapestry threaded with a meditative ambient synth which warps around Sasha Vinogradova's hypnotic vocals, glowing, melting, and molding with Alina Anufrienko's exceptionally delicate cellos. The tapestry is as fragile as it is powerful and transcendental. Its potent poetic imagery blends with the aura of flowing, swaying tones into something the listeners of Hidden Harmony Recordings have an acute ear for, namely exquisite harmony. 180 gram LP, edition of 800 numbered copies. Die-cut outer sleeve, color print inner sleeve + poly-liner sleeves.Abstract/ Remember: "you could be dreaming. Sinking or flying, sound-catching or singing. Witnessing a distant storm in silence, how it exposes purple clouds in unpredictable flashes. Hearing a submarine eruption and finding natal comfort in the warm, fragrant smoke that only wants to sheathe all your edges. The circus has left, only placards remain. And the snow. Look how the flakes sway to your feet without effort -- any distance is misleading, illusory. There's only dream and memory -- the two wings of a bird that flaps with an ocean wave, blinks with an eye of a lighthouse. Fragile, you could be dreaming not alone, holding hands with the core of things. The molten core, like touching ice. You could be dreaming. Dreaming in perfect memories of shapes imperfect. Dreaming of the earth raining from the sky, of the wind inside the sea, of the lighthouse & the ship kissing, of exotic fishes in the bay of your ear. Everything is real. If you play. If you dare to ignore the margins. Echoes go on forever. They play with themselves in a stream of mirrors. Echoes of a forgotten language, of a language unwritten -- a soothing, indifferent creole that reconciles feeling with understanding. Bathe in the fountain at the source of resonance. Bathe in the clouds on the eyes of intimate strangers passing. Disappear. Disappear and be seen, like the moonlit mist behind your eyes. And sway between hope and wisdom."

GILLESPIE & GARETH QUINN REDMOND, C.R. The Exquisite Corpse Shall Drink the New Wine LP
C.R. Gillespie and Gareth Quinn Redmond on the album: "'The exquisite corpse shall drink the new wine,' wrote the French Surrealists almost 100 years ago, and from this missive stems the parlor game in which we partake here. Through obscuring the tower itself, they cobble together meandering staircases in which to ascend with absent-minded haste; spontaneous line-weaving amasses figures and phrases into new planes of thought, therefore holding captive the illusion of creative reciprocity. Although housed in unrecognizable quarters, dull rain now tallies itself upon your window panes just as it once kept count on theirs. Apparitions unknown sound instruments of winding origin in celebration of the ink dry in the well. A graffito of tea leaves stains the porcelain cup. This cloven tall-tale traces an epistolary journey between id and consciousness upon a page that has been adorned and wiped clean again and again and again. The wet meadow expands and contracts within a breath, moving through the windpipe to expel upon the glistening dew. From this dew rises anthills of diminishing complexity, and busying themselves within insanity, the occupants labor to hold fast against the unseen wave of oblivion. An exercise in aleatoric sentence-finishing between two aligned performers, The Exquisite Corpse Shall Drink the New Wine mimics the economics of unconscious beauty-making to such a degree that light will neither pass through it nor divert its path. Draw upon it what you will, and ready yourself for the unrelenting ataraxy. The job's oxo." 180-gram vinyl record. Edition of 300 numbered copies. GONCHAROVA, VALENTINA Ocean: Symphony for Electric Violin and Other Instruments in 10+ Parts 2LP
Valentina Goncharova's double-LP fundamental conceptual musical work released in full uncut form as part of Hidden Harmony Lost Tapes series. Restored and mastered from the original 6.3mm analog tapes. A large-scale work comprising eleven parts of varied, brooding, mystical reflection in which the author alters the instrumentation to fit both programmatic and musical character of each section.Ultra deluxe archival release from Hidden Harmony Recordings, based in Tallinn, Estonia. 2x12" 200-gram vinyl records in poly lined inner sleeves, 33RPM, black vinyl. Thick old style tip-on gatefold outer sleeve. Includes a 12-page booklet, which detailly explain the album conceptual basis, background and creation context, and provides insights into unique sound recording and technical solutions adapted during album recording in 1988. Created and written with direct involvement of V. Goncharova and I. Zubkov.Liner notes: "My task is to allow the listener to penetrate deeper into the music. The music is wholly improvisational. It has no concept in the rational sense of the word. Its concept is purely intuitive. It presumes The Law of Analogies: 'As above so below. Man is the same as the Universe. The Universe is the same as Man.' ('Emerald Tablet' by Hermes Trismegistus). This intuition is a kind of rephrased logic which uses many more symbols which contain not only philosophical but also imaginative meanings/visionary interpretations. This music is a stream of consciousness in its purest form: not an imitation of a stream, as in the 'suggestive poetry' of the 20th century, but a stream where one flow is superimposed on another (a multilateral passage of recording). And, if we think this flow of music will be better understood under the influence of a verbal flow, then the verbal flow should also be more intuitive and associative, as objective for this short write-up you are currently reading. Ocean did not appear within the coordinate system of logical scientific thinking of the last four centuries. It can be said that it is based on an intuitive concept of representations of the world which are captured in music figuratively. Similar to how myths were created in time immemorial with only partial support from verbal associations. Ocean is an experience of passing the human, soul, and mind through the different states of the material world: birth, development, and achievement of perfection, transformation at the points of 'The Way' and 'Silence', the manifestation of the harmony of the world (Om), which until then had remained in a latent state. It is averse to both mainstream contemporary physics and fringe scientific research. It exists outside their explanatory power. Ocean is the source of all forms that can receive their life within time and space. Here it is. It has everything: beautiful and terrible, good and evil, self-sacrifice, and betrayal. Boundless love and inspired creativity. But contact does not happen immediately. The memory of a bygone civilization is still fresh, and of the dearest things left with it."

WET TUNA Eau'd To A Fake Bookie Vol 1 & 2 2LP
Limited restock. Hive Mind Records offer this generous helping of Wet Tuna with their signature deeply fried rural psychedelia. Matt Valentine (MV) and Pat Gubler (PG Six) have been jamming together since the mid '90s, floating around in the US psych-folk scene, playing together in Tower Recordings and separately with influential underground crews Woods, The Golden Road, Garcia Peoples, and The Weeping Bong Band. Both MV and PG Six have been prolific with their solo work and over the years they've recorded for labels such as Ecstatic Peace, Drag City, Woodsist, 3 Lobed, and Crash Symbols. On these recordings, made during the first months of the COVID lockdowns in the forests of the Vermont wilderness, MV and PG Six handle the guitars and synths but they're joined by fellow forest freaks S. Freyer Esq, Jim Bliss, Coot Moon, and Carson "Smokehound" Arnold on bass and drums. Brought to you in their patented mind-expanding spectrasound, Eau'd To A Fake Bookie Volumes 1 & 2 delivers an irresistible gumbo of deep, cosmic psychedelia, primitive drum-machine grooves and woozy country-funk jams. These six songs are cover versions of artists as diverse as The Blackbyrds, Michael Hurley and Jimmy Cliff, but stretched out over four sides, the album is entirely Wet Tuna -- loose, free-flowing and lots of fun!

MOONDOG The Viking of Sixth Avenue 2LP
2022 repress, originally released in 2005. Tremendous gatefold presentation and one of HJR's most impressive documents to date. Poet, composer, street musician and cosmologist Moondog (Louis Thomas Hardin, 1916-1999) learned rhythm from American Indians and counterpoint from J.S. Bach. Many of his recordings feature instruments he built himself: trimba, yukh, tuji, oo. Sometimes you can hear in the background the streets of New York, where Moondog often slept. In addition, he was blind, due to an accident when he was 15. Sometime in the 1950s, fed up with being mistaken on the street for Christ (his regular busking spot was uptown on Sixth) Moondog put on a Viking costume, with spear and horned helmet; and he dressed like this until the late 1970s (by which time he was working with orchestras in Germany). Moondog's renown was extensive: Igor Stravinsky lobbied a judge on Moondog's behalf. Charlie Parker wanted to play with him, Julie Andrews DID play with him, and he was feted by the likes of Bob Dylan, Marlon Brando, and Steve Reich. Andy Warhol's mother designed one of his covers, and Weegee took photographs of him (included in the booklet). Janis Joplin covered him, Mr. Scruff owes him badly, and Antony and the Johnsons covers his songs. This is the first retrospective of Moondog's music -- 36 tracks from 1949-1995, most of them exceptionally rare, all of them miraculous.

VON OSWALD TRIO, MORITZ Vertical Ascent 2LP
2022 repress; gatefold 2LP version. This is the highly-anticipated debut full-length release by The Moritz von Oswald Trio, comprised of members Moritz von Oswald (Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound), Max Loderbauer (NSI, Sun Electric), and Vladislav Delay (Luomo). Through Basic Channel and Rhythm And Sound -- his collaborations with Mark Ernestus -- Moritz von Oswald first of all conjured from thin air -- then comprehensively mapped out -- the grounds of a deep exchange between real-deal Jamaican dub and classic, Detroit-style techno. The duo's accomplishment and influence are immense. The repercussions of their work within electronic dance music have been incalculable. Though a departure, Vertical Ascent retraces various signatures of the earlier styles -- the fastidious density of sound, the massive bass and detailed upper registers ("a frequency massage," Ricardo Villalobos has called the album), the stripped, stepping repetitiousness, the seriousness. The striking differences stem from the qualities of live performance (the driving, clattering percussion in particular, and the loose, improvisatory approach), the exploded palette of sounds, including a trace of steel drums, something like a cuica -- and of course, most of all -- the fresh line-up. Vladislav Delay is a drummer and electronic musician from Finland -- like von Oswald, trained in classical percussion (while the third member studied classical piano for 20 years) -- who released a landmark album on Basic Channel's Chain Reaction imprint, before working with a diversity of artists (under pseudonyms like Luomo and Sistol), from Massive Attack to the Scissor Sisters. On Vertical Ascent, he plays home-made metal percussion. From Munich, Max Loderbauer was a partner in the ambient duo Sun Electric. Behind the scenes, his work has ranged between Tresor and Can's Spoon Records. In 2004 he teamed up with Tobias Freund to form NSI (Non Standard Institut). On Vertical Ascent, he plays synthesizers, alongside von Oswald, who also contributes Fender Rhodes and additional percussion. At the heart of Vertical Ascent is a dream crossing of Basic Channel, Larry Heard and Can -- as at home with calypso as it is Stravinsky.

OLIVEROS, PAULINE Reverberations: Tape & Electronic Music 1961-1970 (2022 Edition) 11CD BOX
This dense 11-disc retrospective of Pauline Oliveros' early and unreleased electronic work includes her very first piece made for tape in 1961. Organized chronologically, this set not only documents Pauline's earliest electronic music but it also functions as an early history of electronic music itself. Follow as she participates in the establishment of the legendary San Francisco Tape Music Center and then moves to University Of Toronto Electronic Music Studio, Mills Tape Music Center and University of California San Diego Electronic Music Center. This tenth anniversary edition is packaged in a clamshell-style box containing all the tracks from the 2012 edition spread out over 11 CDs each housed in single pocket sleeves. A 36-page booklet includes extensive liner notes and essays from Pauline Oliveros, Alex Chechile, Ramon Sender, David Bernstein, Corey Arcangel.Pauline Oliveros was a composer, performer, humanitarian and an important pioneer in American music. Acclaimed internationally, she forged new ground for herself and others. Through improvisation, electronic music, sonic philosophy, teaching and meditation she created a body of work with such breadth of vision that it profoundly affects those who experience it and eludes many who try to write about it. Pauline Oliveros built a loyal following through her concerts, recordings, publications and musical compositions written for soloists and ensembles in music, dance, theater and inter-arts companies. She provided leadership within the music community from her early years as the first Director of the Center for Contemporary Music (formerly the Tape Music Center at Mills), director of the Center for Music Experiment during her 14-year tenure as professor of music at the University of California at San Diego to acting in an advisory capacity for organizations such as The National Endowment for the Arts, The New York State Council for the Arts, and many private foundations. She served as Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Darius Milhaud Composer in Residence at Mills College. Oliveros was vocal about representing the needs of individual artists, about the need for diversity and experimentation in the arts, and promoting cooperation and good will among people. She was honored with awards, grants and concerts internationally. Whether performing at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., in an underground cavern, or in the studios of West German Radio, Oliveros' commitment to interaction with the moment went unchanged. Oliveros passed away peacefully on November 24, 2016 but her sonic legacy and philosophy continues to grow and inspire."On some level, music, sound consciousness and religion are all one, and she would seem to be very close to that level." --John Rockwell

ZEITGEIST FREEDOM ENERGY EXCHANGE Sci-Fi Jazz Directions LP
After the albums of Berlin-based Greek harpist Sissi Rada (co-produced by Brian Eno), the krautrock collective Spiritczualic Enhancement Centerr, experimental drummer Niklas Wandt, and jazz/neo-classical genre stepper Ralph Heidel -- it is now time for jazz ravers Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange to take the center stage. The band around Melbourne born drummer and producer Ziggy Zeitgeist has been based in London for some time before moving to Berlin a few years ago. By now Ziggy and his crew have a big following in Berlin where the new jazz and soul-influenced dance scene is growing rapidly with many new spaces, clubs and radio stations. Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange is a collective that bring together UK jazz funk vibes that have been made popular by Kamaal Williams, Shabaka Hutchings, and Ezra Collective, amongst others with the energy of Berlin's electronic DJ music. In fact, head of the collective, Ziggy Zeitgeist, is a big fan of DJ tools which equally have a big influence on his music. His aim is to create a mix of jazz and tribalistic, electronic energies to create jazz raves that reflect a fresh modern touch of what could be a sound for the next years. Of course, many elements of their songs come from the 1970s -- the chord progressions, the fusion keyboard solos, the driving rhythms. But the general sound of the music and its straight electrifying energy create a new and unique futuristic sound. Sci-Fi Jazz Directions was recorded by the original trio of Ziggy Zeitgeist, Matthew Hayes, and Lewis Moody. After spending thousands of hours together making music on stage and in the woodshed, this album represents a turning point for the group and quite possibly the very nature of creative collaboration. This is an album of tunes crafted over "online jam sessions", as the trio were split between three corners of the world during 2020. Ziggy explains: "Our blessing and our curse is that we're adaptive creatures, we find a way, we adapt to the circumstance, and so as artists and as improvisers we found ways to connect and create in a virtual space." The trio continue to hone their unique brand of dance-floor focused "jazzrave". This album epitomizes the Zeitgeist of the time, the crucial meeting point of our organic selves with our technology.

CHAPMAN, MICHAEL And Then There Were Three: Live at the Nottingham Playhouse, July 1977 2LP
Lantern Heights' personal tribute to the one and only Michael Chapman, a hero in his own right, a "Fully Qualified Survivor" (just to mention one of his most successful creations). An unreleased live album on vinyl in the form of an astonishing trio. A live set recorded at Nottingham's Playhouse Theatre on July 23rd, 1977 by Chapman and a power house rhythm section in Lindisfarne bassist Rod Clements and former John Mayall drummer Keef Hartley. Some of his best-loved songs are showcased in "And There Were Three" -- a jocular reference to Chapman's ever-shrinking band, also known as "a beast with three heads". Fully licensed. 180 gram vinyl.

LUCIENT Sa Casa des Carbo LP
Sa Casa des Carbó is an old fishermen's house located on the seafront in Cala Vedella, a small beach cove situated on the west coast of Ibiza. Through its windows filters the salty air and the murmur of the sea, while also offering a glimpse into the history of a land with a powerful nomadic spirit and a cultural background that has no equal. In November 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic and driven by the desire to embark on an inner journey, Mario G. Quelart (Lucient) chose this peculiar enclave as a source of inspiration and focal point for his debut album Sa Casa des Carbó. For ten days, Lucient self-isolated by choice and undertook an introspective journey to find himself. It was a voyage through uncertainty and fear, with moments of tranquility; a personal pilgrimage traveling through light and the shadows, in which time became a relative element. Sa Casa des Carbó is a sound journal of this experience, an album with an ambient base, but which opens the door to experimentation, rhythm, and psychedelia. Field recordings -- the sea, the birds, the wind, and a strangely silent airport -- are fundamental parts of this journey and serve as a canvas for an album of cosmic electronica with Balearic overtones.

Nuovo Testamento is a new half-American half-Italian trio featuring members from Horror Vacui, Sheer Mag, Tørsö, Terremoto, and Crimson Scarlet. With such references you wouldn't expect this to be any less good than it actually is. Exposure is their very first recording and its six songs perfectly blend coldwave bass lines, minimal electro beats, synthpop melodies, ethereal female vocals. Originally released on tape by the band itself in 2019 and then on vinyl by Avant! Records (first press in 2019, second press in 2020), Legion Of The Dead release the CD version of this little gem limited to 300 copies.

NUOVO TESTAMENTO New Earth CD
Nuovo Testamento's first full-length album is pure Italo bliss. Recorded in isolation during a global pandemic, New Earth is a dark Italo record dappled with light. For eight new tracks, dancing synths perfectly balance the rich dream of a charmed life with melancholy. Guitars have taken a step back, allowing disco beats to flood the floor and joyful fun to prevail. The record anticipates a return to dance spaces, imagines shared experiences and celebrates personal power. Produced by sound engineer Maurizio Baggio (The Soft Moon, Boy Harsher), with vocal recording by Riki and featuring guest vocals from B. Sven Gustavson (Spectres), New Earth reflects international influences from the goth club scene to Hi-NRG classics, reminiscent of Italian Baby Records, Mute Records, and the spaces in between. Originally released on tape by Funeral Party Records (first press in 2021, second press in 2022) and on vinyl by Avant! Records (first press in 2021, second press in 2022), Legion Of The Dead release the CD version of this shiny gem limited to 300 copies.

MADALITSO BAND Musakayike CD
Madalitso Band have taken their exuberant, Malawian folk music from the streets of Lilongwe to thrilling audiences across Europe and now release their third album, Musakayike. Recorded in Malawi in November of 2021, the duo, along with their "accidental manager" Neil Nayar, headed into the studio with a clearer idea of how to capture that Madalisto Band sound without losing any of their groove and infectious energy. The Malawian duo's setup comprises a homemade one-string slide bass (Babatone), a cowskin foot drum thumped with the heel and a four-string guitar. The guitar, played by Yosefe Kalekeni, holds close to the rhythm while lead singer Yobu Maligwa's long-necked, Babatone serves as both the bottom end and lead. When asked why they make their own instruments, they will simply reply "that's how we get the sound we want." Live, these songs stretch out well over ten minutes, designed to get and then keep the audience dancing, but on this new record they were fine-tuned and trimmed back before heading into the studio. Album opener "Ali Ndi Vuto" zips out with Yobu Maligwa lamenting the fact that whether you're rich or poor, people will find fault with you. "Musakayike" is as infectious as they come, with a playful groove and the pair's harmonizing vocals creating a sound that defies their stripped back set up. Some 20 years ago, at the start of a now long friendship, the duo decided to build their own instruments to recreate the sounds they'd heard on the radio growing up. After years of playing on the streets of the nation's capital, the pair were discovered by a local producer while busking outside a shopping center in Lilongwe in 2009. However, it still wasn't until 2017 when they had their first performance outside Malawi, at Sauti Za Busara in Zanzibar. Six months later and they were on an airplane for the first time in their lives, to do a two-week European tour, with a stop at the prestigious Roskilde Festival following a few months later. The success of these previous tours has meant the pair have been able to buy some land and construct their own homes. However, they remain largely unknown throughout Malawi, only occasionally recognized from when they were playing on the streets of Lilongwe. Yobu Malinga is perhaps better known locally as a pastor, regularly receiving worshippers to his home. For fans of: Malawi Mouse Boys, Staff Benda Bilili, Gonora Sounds.

BARBIERI, CATERINA Spirit Exit CD
The musical vortexes of Caterina Barbieri rewire time and space. Listening to the Italian composer and modular synth virtuoso has felt like traveling at light-speed and slow-motion all at once since 2017's breakthrough Patterns Of Consciousness. 2019's acclaimed Ecstatic Computation pushed even further with the lead single "Fantas". Far beyond any new age trope or modern synth trend, her music stands alone in its ecstatic intensity and cataclysmic emotional impact. Marking the debut album on her new label light-years, Barbieri now delivers her most profound work yet -- a journey through inner-space as vast as a universe and as intimate as a heartbeat. Spirit Exit is Caterina Barbieri's time machine, primarily composed with a modular synth rig she thinks of more like a mechanical fortune teller. Whereas previous releases were constructed on lengthy tours, capturing only snapshots of continually evolving works, Spirit Exit represents the producer's first album fully written and recorded in her home studio amidst Milan's two-month pandemic lockdown in 2020. It was during this extended isolation she found inspiration from female philosophers, mystics and poets spread across time, but united in their strength at cultivating vast internal worlds. St. Teresa D'Avila's foundational 16th century mystical text The Interior Castle, philosopher Rosi Braidotti's posthuman theories and the metaphysical poetry of Emily Dickinson act as thematic anchors throughout Spirit Exit. Spirit Exit crystallizes Barbieri's densely layered, blindingly bright synth arrangements while introducing stunning new elements that feel as if they've always belonged. Strings and guitar flawlessly thread into the composer's web of modular patches, while her revelatory singing voice often cuts right through them. Melodies remain Barbieri's great passion and obsession and on Spirit Exit they grow as large as planets before cracking into atoms. The sweeping "At Your Gamut" perfects the producer's dramatic, slow-burning openers, but in her first ever use of sampling, it later gets crushed, accelerated and unrecognizably transformed into the ghostly hook surging through "Terminal Clock". As the album closes on "The Landscape Listens" -- a song that approaches death with all the gentle grace of Brian Eno's "An Ending (Ascent)".

BADGE Collected Singles LP
US exclusive version on transparent orange gold vinyl, 150 copies. "Not many albums can get you in the mood to blow out your speakers quite like Kath 1, the hideously rare and expensive 1974 low-fi, semi-ramshackle DIY psychedelic LP made by members of Maryland band Badge, recorded in the home of band leader Val Rogolino (and, yes, dedicated to his girlfriend and their pet monkey!). What Patrick the Lama said in Acid Archives about Kath, is equally applicable to Badge: 'Obscure and impressive melodic basement garage/psych with a lo-fi atmosphere that would have most purveyors flip out... at times the vibe is almost like Mystery Meat or Index, and that's not something you run across every day... Nuts lo-fi recording quality and impossible-to-figure production values gives this a nicely zonked almost real-people vibe. Keyboards, fuzz, heap of amateur avant spirit.' The fact that Badge had been a going band for a while, and that they released several singles and EPs -- written by Val and his best friend Cheese Sollers and recorded the same way, on the same equipment as the Kath album, seems to have been overlooked -- until now. Here are those singles and EP tracks, lovingly remastered and presented as a coherent LP compilation. Badge formed 13 March 1970, a Friday: Cheese Sollers -- guitar/vocals; Jim O'Dell -- bass/vocals; Val Rogolino -- drums/vocals. Badge played on into the 1970's with several band member changes, adding at one point female vocalists and horn players. Cheese and Val remained the core of the group at all times. 'In 1970, Cheese and I started recording original songs with two stereo tape recorders, using PA systems for mixing. That was the beginning of the recording bug for us. We purchased a professional tape recorder, a TEAC 2340 four-track machine. This really opened up our recording process.' --Val Rogolino Comes with an eight page insert with liner notes by Kath leader and Badge co-leader Val Rogolino and a bevy of photos from his personal stash."

SEOMPI We Have Waited: Singles And Unreleased (Fire Orange Vinyl) LP
US exclusive color vinyl on fire orange vinyl, edition of 150. "Call SEOMPI proto-doom, call them heavy progressive/psych, call them hard rock, call them psychedelic space rock -- all are true -- but definitely call SEOMPI radical in their approach to heavy music -- and heavy topics (police, drugs, social justice, prejudice, war). SEOMPI (Self Expression on Musically Potential Instruments) released only three singles during their time together c. 1971, but what singles! Three posthumous releases have only added to SEOMPI's aura -- even though two of those were at the wrong speed + said they featured single mixes (and didn't); and the third of those -- on Rockadelic -- is long out of print. For this collection, we have gathered all of SEOMPI's actual single A and B sides, including their incredibly rare first single, 'We Have Waited' b/w a guitar-less take of 'Lay On the Floor', a song they re-recorded for their third single. The second side of the LP is comprised of previously unreleased takes from the band's recording sessions. A swath of tracks from these SEOMPI sessions were released on the Cicadelic Records Guns From the Skies CD collection -- but not any of these takes. The year was 1970, and Dave Williams was done with his stint at one of Texas's finest barbed wire facilities -- the same path that had landed Roky Erickson at Rusk Stale Hospital had put Dave behind bars. Five years earlier, Dave was a founding member of the Headstones, McAllen Texas's answer to teen angst rock music. Not content with being the usual 'cover' band, Dave began to write original tunes and worked long and hard in rehearsal sessions to perfect them. After releasing legendary singles on the Pharaoh label and being courted by numerous major labels, the Headstones called it quits in 1968. Always an innovator, Dave formed SEOMPI, first as a three-piece guitar-less two bass and drums band, and then adding blazing guitar. SEOMPI takes you on a trip back to 1971, when Texas was a stomping ground for epochal rock music, proving with each track that they could, and in some cases actually did hang, with other legendary psych and rock heavies such as The 13th Floor Elevators, The Zakary Thaks, ZZ Top, and Johnny Winter. First ever reissue of most of this material. Includes 12-page booklet with band founder Dave Williams talking about SEOMPI for the first time!"

JIYANE AND TREE-O, MALCOLM UMDALI CD
Operating from the fringes of the South African jazz scene, the enigmatic yet charismatic trombonist and pianist Malcolm Jiyane delivers a major contribution to the canon -- one shaped around dedications to key figures in his personal and professional life. Several years ago, Jiyane was dealing with the death of a band member, the birth of a daughter and the passing of his beloved mentor Johnny Mekoa, founder of the Music Academy of Gauteng, which Jiyane attended from a young age. These life-altering events give shape to the music's emotional register and its thematic concerns. In Black Music, his book of essays and critiques, Amiri Baraka makes the point that jazz musicians, be it in the construction of solos or in other aspects of composition, always draw on the works of their contemporaries or elders. How much outsiders pick up on that is really dependent on how au fait they are with the music. In this album, Jiyane finds comfort in this well-trodden path. Two songs make for great examples. "Umkhumbi kaMa", a jazz-funk track celebrating the creative force as inhabited by women, the motif to Herbie Hancock's "Ostinato (Suite for Angela)" is a clear reference, connecting in one swift move, not only the musical traditions of the Black Atlantic but also the struggles and triumphs of women across space and time. On the same note, the free-form "Solomon, Tsietsi & Khotso", conjured in the same jam session that yielded SPAZA's Uprize! (M3H 007LP), appears here in a more fleshed out form as "Senzo seNkosi"; a tender dedication to Malcolm Jiyane Tree-O bass player Senzo Nxumalo. Jiyane's path to the realization of his debut album as frontman is more than merely one individual's breakthrough. Workshopped and recorded within two days in Johannesburg, UMDALI, not unlike Miles Davis's landmark Kind of Blue, stretches our idea of what it means to improvise within the context of jazz.

MOGOROSI, TUMI Group Theory: Black Music CD
Group Theory: Black Music is a stunning new statement from South African drummer and composer Tumi Mogorosi. Standing in the lineage of South African greats such as Louis Moholo-Moholo, Makaya Ntshoko, and Ayanda Sikade, Mogorosi is one of the foremost drummers working anywhere in the world, with a flexible, powerful style that brings a distinctive South African inflection to the polyrhythmic tradition of Elvin Jones, Max Roach, and Art Blakey. Since his international debut on Jazzman Records in 2014 with Project ELO, Mogorosi has been in the vanguard of the South African creative music scene's burgeoning outer-national dimension, taking the drummer's chair in both Shabaka Hutchings' Shabaka and The Ancestors formation and with avant-garde noiseniks The Wretched, who featured on Brownswood's acclaimed South African showcase, Indaba Is. Where Group Theory: Black Music moves an established format dramatically forward is in the addition of a nine-person choir. Their massed voices soar powerfully above every track as a collective instrument of human breath and body, and enter the album into the small but significant number of radical recordings to have used the voice in this way, such as Max Roach's It's Time (1962), Andrew Hill's Lift Every Voice (1970), Billy Harper's Capra Black (1973), and Donald Byrd's I'm Trying To Get Home. Features a cross-generational line-up of celebrated South African musicians including guitarist Reza Khota, pianist Andile Yenana, and vocalists Gabi Motuba and Siyabonga Mthembu. Also features Lesego Rampolokeng. For fans of: Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim), Shabaka Hutchings, John Coltrane, Max Roach, Donald Byrd, Abbey Lincoln, Art Blakey. CD version comes in bespoke tip-on CD jacket.

LOS KENYA Siempre Afro-Latino LP
Música Infinita presents the raw and uncompromising Afro Latin sound of Ray Perez and Los Kenya, one of the most interesting groups to spring out of the Venezuelan salsa scene in the late sixties. The late '60s was a prolific period for outstanding Afro-Latin music in Venezuela, with multiple local labels releasing and distributing records by a myriad of homegrown talent. Pianist and bandleader, Ray Perez, recorded and released seven LPs between '67 and '68 with Los Dementes, one of the best-known salsa bands in the country at the time. Following a brief stint in New York, where he shared the stage with Kako's orchestra, Perez returned to Venezuela and under the influence of bandmates Luis Arias and Alfredo Naranjo formed Los Kenya. The core of this compact group was made up of two trumpets and a drum set, uncommon at a time when big bands were the norm. With the addition of an accomplished and unique pair of vocalists in Calaven and Carlin Rodriguez, Los Kenya cooked up a stew of raw, groovy, and uncompromising tunes for their debut LP on Velvet, later re-released by Ray himself under his own Pyraphon label, and presented here in a limited and re-mastered edition. Having recently left his previous band Los Dementes, Ray and Los Kenya debuted with a live performance in September of 1968 at Sunday Party Group to present their 7" single featuring "Hoculele" and "Omelembe". Soon after, their debut album was released by the label Velvet. Due to a combination of original compositions, most of them written and arranged by Ray; a killer lineup of musicians; and an uncompromising and raw approach to their music, Los Kenya became one of the most interesting new groups in the Venezuelan salsa scene. In Ray's own words: "each of my bands had a distinct sound. For example, Los Dementes had a different sound to Eddie Palmieri's band even though we shared a similar configuration. The same happens with Los Kenya and another of my band's Los Calvos, both of which had a very similar lineup of musicians."

Both tracks were recorded at Greenhouse Studios at the same one-day session in August '88 and are technically unreleased. "Back Between Places" is an alternate mix made at the time and better than the one we chose to release. "Violin" is a completely unreleased recording. It was planned as the original B-side but ended up being replaced by two early recordings "Her Fathers Son" and "Precious Diamond Tears" on the actual 12" release. "Violin" was recorded a few months later at Scruttocks along with "Freeze Out", "Vibrato", and a couple of others that have appeared on the Hotrod Hotel LP. Limited 7" white vinyl. HIT PARADE, THE Pick Of The Pops (Vol. 1) LP
14 track vinyl version of the 2012 CD compilation. First time on vinyl. A swish compilation LP featuring fourteen of the most memorable songs in the career of the top-notch indie band The Hit Parade. Entitled Pick Of The Pops (Vol. 1), the LP collects together the most poignant moments in the career of The Hit Parade and includes their thoughtful recording for Sarah Records, In Gunnersbury Park (1991), their tubthumping single for Minty Fresh USA, Hitomi (1993), as well as other cuts, both cheerful and desolate in style, that feature Cath Carroll (Factory Records), Amelia Fletcher (Heavenly, Talulah Gosh), and Harvey Williams (Another Sunny Day, The Field Mice). The Hit Parade was formed by Julian Henry with his school friends Matt Moffatt and Raymond Watts in 1984 when they released their first single "Forever" on JSH Records. Since then, they've clung to the sensibilities of pure pop and have become a curiosity item with their retro attitudes and songs about dead writers, disused swimming pools, and failed love affairs. Their early vinyl singles were lauded by John Peel, the NME, and Melody Maker, the now defunct weekly paper that published Julian Henry's writing. In the 1990s, the band toured alongside Edwyn Collins, The Milkshakes, and Sarah Records notables, and signed to Japanese and US labels, releasing a sequence of albums that have since become collectible. Pale blue vinyl; includes printed lyric inner sleeve, poster, and postcard.

MONOCHROME SET, THE Volume, Contrast, Brilliance... Sessions & Singles Vol. 1 LP
Originally released in 1983, this rewarding record acted as a round-up of the Monochrome Set's career to date and was of immeasurable value to fans. It's aged well, too. Comprising of A and B sides from their Rough Trade released singles plus extracts from sessions for Radio 1, Capital Radio, and EMI Records, this LP contains unique versions of such classic tracks as "The Jet Set Junta" and "He's Frank (Slight Return)". Oddities and jocular moments run through the album, including John Peel introducing " Fat Fun" and thinking aloud that those Monochrome boys might be having a pop at him. The fact that it includes a wish list of the band's best songs to this point in their career is another reason to recommend it. Previously they may have made a handful of slightly-off-target albums, but this 1983 compilation is a front-to-back joy, fast, restless and perfectly sequenced. It plays like a cohesive album. Includes two bonus tracks from the February 1979 Peel Session: "Love Goes Down The Drain" and "Noise (Eine Kleine Symphonie)". Clear vinyl with black, blue, and white splatter; comes in embossed gloss laminated gatefold sleeve with lyrics and printed inner sleeve.

CAVALIERE, FRANCESCO Aquilone Grattacielo DJ Mix LP
From Pacific City Discs, to you the listener, a DJ mix of fantasy and splash-energy in a small edition of vinyl. Fantasy writer/recording artist, Francesco Cavaliere, while visiting his seaside childhood vacation location, was extended an impromptu invitation, to DJ an '80s swimming club. He had this to say about his experience: "I was at Shangri-La and a boy and girl from the bathhouse in silver swimsuits and sand-colored streaks waved me over with a drink and asked me if I would like to DJ the next day during my lesson on the beach at Tana del Pirata! I then and there I laughed but then I accepted (I had nothing at home just my mp3 player and a Nokia with music inside). The next day there was a little wind on the beach and the umbrellas swayed to the left. From the heat they could catch fire, white flames, instead the sea was rough and that wind with very long wrists cheered us up, blowing gaseous clouds in our faces. Perfect for the day ahead. After the first few pieces, I began to see that a group of kids jumped into the adjacent pool trying flips bombs and candle dives. Someone at the bar was playing 'Altered Beast' . . . so sipping a drink with ice, I imagined DJ werewolf repeating catchy pieces while a kite half cobra half skyscraper inflated above us." This impromptu disc is fresh now, for you to frolic with this summer, while entertaining a daydream in the midst of entering a body of water while witnessing an apparition in the sky. Selected and compiled by Francisco Cavaliere.

EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN Greatest Hits 2LP
2022 restock; double LP version. 140 gram vinyl. Includes download code. Einstürzende Neubauten have discovered sounds beyond the pain barrier, the beauty of dissonance and the aesthetics of the scrapyard. They are regarded as the most important engines in the development of new musical strategies; Hardly another German band has characterized the music landscape as lastingly. Their influence on the music world was, and is, as great as their timeless character. Once fully set in motion - by West Berliners Blixa Bargeld, NU Unruh and Alexander Hacke in the early 1980s - Einstürzende Neubauten have pressed on regardless. Indeed since percussionist Rudolf Moser and former Die Haut guitarist Jochen Arbeit joined in 1997, the current Einstürzende Neubauten line-up has not only been their longest lasting; going on the evidence gathered here, it's arguably their broadest ranging and most fruitful partnership, with Rudi and Jochen always gamely responding to the musical challenges posed by NU Unruh's battery of invented instruments and devices. Along with multi-instrumentalist Alex Hacke, who took over bass after the departure of Mark Chung (after their 1992 album Tabula Rasa) and FM Einheit (during the recording of 1996's Ende Neu (POTOMAK 919821/919822)), they willingly switch between their chosen instruments and NU Unruh's inventions, sounding the depths, tapping, scratching and hammering out beats, or drawing haunting tones from the seemingly most unforgiving of source materials presented to them, invariably in the service of the song. The earliest track here is a newly mixed version of "Haus Der Lüge", the title track of their 1989 album Haus Der Lüge (POTOMAK 820001/820002); except it's now adorned with freshly recorded trombone and string parts, which the group wanted on the original but couldn't afford, so had to use synth simulations instead. Five tracks are taken from their 2000 album Silence Is Sexy (POTOMAK 957051/957052). During the 2000s, Einstürzende Neubauten's resourcefulness extended beyond the stage and the recording studio into the economics of alternative music practice. Two Greatest Hits tracks, "Dead Friends (Around The Corner)" and "Ein Leichtes Leises Säuseln", originated on their Supporters Album #1 (2003), which in publicly modified form became Perpetuum Mobile (Mute, 2004). Now as then as always, declares Greatest Hits's newest track "How Did I Die", "The difference makes the song".

ROLLING STONES, THE Ed Sullivan Show 1969 EP 7"
In November 1969 the Stones appeared on Ed Sullivan's influential show for the sixth and final time, sharing a bill with Ella Fitzgerald. Jagger was resplendent in a silver and black choker and a fringed cloak whilst Richards' hair was in the ascendent, complementing his see-through Dan Armstrong guitar. Sullivan announced "Gimme Shelter" as being from the band's new album Let It Bleed, to be released in the US the week after the broadcast. KEITH, RODD My Pipe Yellow Dream LP
2022 restock. "Song Poems Wanted" read the ads. "We need new ideas for recording!" The send-us-your-lyrics business was a borderline scam, taking whatever lyrics came their way from would-be songwriters and -- for a fee -- setting them to music. None of the results ever came close to being a hit, and to be sure, the vast majority was sufficiently bland or clumsy to insure no great karmic loss in their instant obscurity and miniscule press runs. But Rodd Keith -- the late, great genius whose prolific output was almost completely confined to the song-poem industry -- had a knack for turning sow's ears into silk purses. The nature of the business required him to work quickly, with no second takes, and his skill at writing and arranging on the fly was not unlike that of a master improviser. When at his best, he put his unique musical stamp on some lucky customer's submission. My Pipe Yellow Dream is the second Roaratorio anthology of the highlights of Rodd Keith's work. Compiling fifteen previously un-reissued songs from 1966 through his death in 1974 -- including a never-before-heard cover of "Choo Choo Train" -- My Pipe Yellow Dream showcases the full range of his talents. From exquisite mid-60s pop balladry ("Deep Velvet") to blue-eyed soul ("You Don't Have To Alibi") to folk-rock ("Tired Of Waiting") to solo Chamberlain creations ("Red Sports Car") to gospel testifying ("O Jesus My Savior") to a pair of patriotic screeds (the all-spoken word "America The Not So Beautiful" and the bizarre-world lounge funk of "Search Out Your Soul, American"), this collection continues the rehabilitation of Rodd Keith's recorded legacy from thrift-shop throwaway to celebrated cult artist. A limited-edition LP in a gorgeous gatefold jacket, with artwork by Josh Journey-Heinz and liner notes from song-poem vocalist Dick Kent. Download coupon included.

CORNER, PHILIP Gong/Ear: Dance-ing, 1 & 2 LP
2022 restock. A major figure in 20th century arts and music (and beyond), Philip Corner studied with Henry Cowell and Olivier Messiaen, and was one of the original fluxus conspirators, among other highlights of his long and storied career. As part of the body of his Metal Meditations work, Gong / Ear is a decades-long series of improvisations with dancers. Utilizing his favorite Paiste tam-tam, these two recordings from Corner's New York City Leonard Street loft in 1989 are a feedback loop of perceptions between gong and dance: "the initiating sound (or is it the dancer's posture?) is made physically audible. Responsive movement is turned back into sound. Musicianly attentiveness sends it back and it continues." Gong / Ear : Dance-Ing, 1 & 2 is released in a limited edition of 305 copies, each with a hand-cut facsimile brass gong, silkscreened with Corner's calligraphy and mounted onto the jacket. ACTION & TENSION & SPACE Tellus CD
The band describe themselves as a spaced-out, instrumental lounge rock outfit, with added vibes of folk music, jazzy surf, psychedelia, free improvised chill-out, jangly post-rock, and travelling bass. Not much to add here, apart from possibly a pinch of krautrock. Tellus is the quartet's fourth album, and their debut on Rune Grammofon. Being something of an all-star team from the fertile psychedelic space drone scene in Haugesund on the west coast of Norway, the members also pay their dues in bands like Electric Eye, Lumen Drones (ECM), Undergrünnen, and The Low Frequency in Stereo, whose album Futuro was released by Rune Grammofon back in 2009 (RCD 2082CD). On Tellus they are joined by Sigbjørn Apeland, a much-esteemed musician largely operating in a landscape of folk music, church music and improvisation. He is a member of Nils Økland Band (ECM and Hubro) and has collaborated with him for 30 years, also appearing on his two albums for Rune Grammofon; Straum (2000, RCD 2015CD) and Bris (2004, RCD 2042CD). Also appearing on Tellus is Ståle Liavik Solberg, a central force on Oslo's thriving improvised music scene. He has performed worldwide with numerous Norwegian and international musicians and curates the excellent Blow Out! festival. With Tellus, Action & Tension & Space heads into the Hardangervidda (the big plains connecting the eastern and western parts of southern Norway) terrain of wide-open spaces, spare vegetation and unruly weather conditions, especially during the winter. The album was recorded in a small studio in Haugesund during two days of heavy rain showers and stormy winds rumbling outside the windows. Personnel: Per Steinar Lie - lapsteel, electric guitar; Øystein Braut - guitar, organ, Mellotron; Julius Lind - double bass; Ørjan Haaland - drums; Sigbjørn Apeland - harmonium, Fender Rhodes; Ståle Liavik Solberg - percussion.

BDRMM Port EP CD
The EP is the Hull and Leeds-based band's first major release since their debut album, Bedroom, which was hailed as a latter-day shoegaze classic when it came out in July 2020. "Port", which was originally released as a single last October, marked a major step forward for the band. Sounding not unlike the Low of Double Negative (2018) or Hey What (2021) deconstructing The Temptations' "I Know I'm Losing You", it's a much darker sounding song; its distorted drones and beats burst into life with frenzied guitar and howls of anguish. "It helped us consider the band in a much more fluid perspective," says bassist and synth player Jordan Smith of the pivotal track. "Swapping instruments and redefining roles gave us time to spend working on new and more intriguing sonic ideas." This new experimental and more electronic approach was expanded as the standalone single release grew, almost accidentally, into a full EP, which features radical reworkings by Daniel Avery (a fearless, all guns blazing techno stomper); Working Men's Club (New Order's "Sub-Culture" meets a long-lost early Warp Records classic); A Place To Bury Strangers (a feedback frenzy of total sonic annihilation); Tom Sharkett from Manchester krautpoppers W.H. Lung (DFA Records goes down to the death disco); Jonathan Snipes from LA-based experimental hip-hop trio Clipping (glitchy beats imploding into a wall of white noise); and Jordan himself, as Mouth Company, who brings proceedings to a close with a slow-mo trip-hop treatment. "To have so many influential artists to us putting their own piece of DNA on what has become such an important track to us is so humbling," gushes Ryan. "It's brand new territory for us, and we just feel so lucky to have everybody involved." The EP is being released ahead of bdrmm's dates supporting shoegaze legends Ride in April and will be followed by their eagerly-awaited second album, which they are currently working on. "I am so excited to embrace the next chapter of bdrmm." CD version includes poster.

PYE CORNER AUDIO Let's Emerge! LP
LP version. Translucent yellow vinyl. Pye Corner Audio releases a new album, Let's Emerge!, for Sonic Cathedral. It's his first studio outing for the label following the acclaimed live recording Social Dissonance, which came out on vinyl earlier in 2022, and it features Ride guitarist Andy Bell playing on five of its ten tracks. From the first glimpse of the artwork to the first note of the music it's a marked deviation from Pye Corner Audio's more traditional shadowy sounds. Whereas his last outing for Ghost Box (2021's Entangled Routes) was inspired by the underground fungal pathways through which plants communicate, this one is very much above ground, bathed in sunlight and acid-bright psychedelia. Designer Marc Jones's bold and ultra-vivid artwork consciously references the likes of LFO, Spacemen 3, and the early output of Stereolab. "I think it mixes together many of my earliest influences," explains Martin. "I've been a long-time fan of Spacemen 3 and Stereolab. Their moments of repetition and drone have always seeped into what I've tried to create. I was living in a small apartment and I'd stripped down my studio set-up when I was recording this album. This enabled me to focus on a few key pieces of equipment and explore them fully." The recordings were fleshed out by Andy Bell. "When I met Andy, we agreed that we needed to work together in some way. After I'd remixed a few tracks from his album The View From Halfway Down, he kindly repaid the favor." The end results -- mastered in New York by acclaimed engineer Heba Kadry -- are incredible, from the first stirrings of opener "De-Hibernate", via the glorious "Haze Loops" and "Saturation Point", the album slowly but surely awakens, blinking and feeling its way into the light. It all culminates in the epic closing track "Warmth Of The Sun" which, with its vocal harmonies and acid breakdown, is seven and a half minutes of pure release. "That one's about life's simple pleasures," concludes Martin. "The Beach Boys, tremolo guitars, infinite drones, Spacemen 3. Let's emerge from this darkened era and feel the 'Warmth Of The Sun'. The last few years have seen huge changes, both personally and in a wider perspective. The album title is a reaction to this, a collective (tentative) sigh of relief. Here's to new beginnings and a sense of hope."

XAM DUO XAM Duo II CD
XAM Duo -- the Yorkshire-based pairing of Matthew Benn and Christopher Duffin -- follow up their acclaimed self-titled 2016 debut (SCR 120CD/LP) with XAM Duo II. They have spent the past few years collaborating with Virginia Wing and releasing the fun single "Tisch Tennis", as well as playing live with everyone from Stereolab, Sonic Boom, and Michael Rother to Jessy Lanza, The Necks, and Anna Meredith. They are also both members of Holodrum, the band formed from the ashes of Hookworms whose debut album came out earlier this year. Despite being over five years in the making, XAM Duo II is a much more concise affair than their debut, clocking in at just under 30 minutes. The journey begins and ends with the beat-driven "Blue Comet" and "Cold Stones", taking in shorter ambient jams along the way, making use of saxophone, drawn-out tape chords, floating Rhodes piano, and spaced-out synths, alongside very precise and intentional, sequenced and punchy synth tones. With the digital approach it could feel cold and processed, but it's the opposite -- warm and natural. This is something that is reflected in the striking artwork by long-time collaborator Jonathan Wilkinson which comes from a series of prints inspired by his time hiking around the Calder Valley in West Yorkshire. One thing that has stayed the same is the influence of The Sopranos, with three of the six tracks on the album named after episodes of the classic series.

ROMPERAYO Asi No Se Puede Muchaches LP
Romperayo is back, with a brand new tropical nine-track album full of tropical riddims and humid Caribbean jams. After two long sold-out albums, Romperayo (Discrepant, 2015) and Que Jué? (Souk, 2019), Pedro Ojeda's unique update on classic Colombian music returns for a full long player of future tropical instrumental tunes, heavy on the drum grooves mixed with slow, languid experimental interludes. This is 21st century Colombian popular music taken to the next level by one of the most singular figures currently active on the Colombian scene. Romperayo's, aka Pedro Ojeda (Los Pirañas, Chupame el Dedo) solo project uses his irreverent drumming techniques and filters them through a lens of new school psychedelia, historical sampling, and acid synth solos. With his sound obsessions clearly present over all of his work (and this record), Pedro effortless mixes the old school with the new with an avant-garde collage approach to composition, never forgetting his academic studies on Latin American drumming styles. The result expands the frontiers of Colombian tropical music and provides a new, multicultural dialogue whilst using many of the rhythms and melodies of the Colombian historical repertoire to a new generation. The Colombian Caribbean coast sonido never sounded so fresh. Artwork by Mateo Rivano. All tracks composed and produced by Pedro Ojeda. Acosta Accordion on "Calzoncillo Colorado" by Iván Medellín. Gaita on "Calzoncillo Colorado" by Jaime Ospina.

MUSLIMGAUZE Muhammadunize 2LP
Listeners who know much of anything about Bryn Jones' work as Muslimgauze know that he was prolific in both his work and Muhammadunize, has what could be called a classic feel to it, with a very familiar blend of drones, string instruments, and synths, and varying percussion/break-beat patterns, in turn mixed with a number of hard-to-catch vocal samples. It's a formula used many times in the past by Jones, yet somehow he still manages to keep things just fresh enough, investing songs like the first and second "Khalifate" and especially both slamming versions of "Imad Akel" with enough unexpected touches. He incorporates the basic power of his work in the tracks as well, with both beauty and a nervy, hard-to-define tension as the songs progress. The sound palette of Muhammadunize is very similar to his ambient-techno albums such as Mullah Said and Gun Aramaic, down to the rhythms and the trademark tanpura drones and keys in C minor. The difference is that it's a bit more aggressive and faster-paced than the aforementioned albums, thus utilizing a similar dark atmosphere to a more immediate and in-your-face effect, especially as noted by the drum-kit urban-sounding pulse of "Imad Akel", one of the high points on this album. However, a favorite track here is the closer "Fatah Guerrilla" (also title track of the whole triple album), featuring a rapid echoed rhythm along with a barrage of percussion popping up and echoing every so often, sounding like they're flying through the room at a quick pace; the piece also features a beautiful flute melody which combines with the busy rhythm section in an interesting way.

HET ZWEET Het Zweet 2LP
Remastered reissue of Het Zweet (1987), including bonus LP consisting of previously unreleased material. Marien Van Oers work under the name Het Zweet ("The Sweat" in English) originally came out in the 1980s (specifically 1983-1988), but listening to the new reissue of this self-titled album from 1987 can feel like one is listening to something that's both much more current and also much, much older than that. Van Oers, who passed away in 2013, made music that tended to get classed as "industrial", and tracks here like the steady, clanging churn of "From The Lowland" or "On Earth" show why, but he was as or more inspired by tribal music intended to produce trance-like effects via rhythm and (percussive and vocal) repetition. Using instruments made by himself out of anything from shopping carts to cardboard tubes, the music of Het Zweet locks into grooves that somehow feel more elemental and physical than many of his contemporaries. It never quite feels like Van Oers is emulating or echoing the music of any particular region or tradition so much as trying to synthesize all the ones he's heard into some sort of ur-pulse, an overtone so powerful as to compel the "Massive Trance" the title of the last song on the record evokes. While the 1987 Het Zweet has four track titles per side, and on listening you can discern some segues and places where it feels like new movements do shift into place, it's fitting to have this record on vinyl where the listener is encouraged to experience each side as one uninterrupted piece. The bonus material included on this reissue expands Het Zweet from one LP to two, the second LP consisting entirely of previously unreleased material. This bonus LP is sequenced similarly, with three untitled tracks and two live excerpts presented as side-long experiences that belie their disparate origins with a unity of sound and purpose. Van Oers' percussive nous and distantly yelled chants certainly sound capable of working up a sweat in both the performer and any movement-minded listeners, but maybe the most striking thing about Het Zweet is how vital it still sounds, despite its age and relative obscurity.

LASWELL, BILL City of Light LP
2022 repress, on Indian green vinyl. First time ever on vinyl, re-released in our Sub Rosa Blackcore series. City of Light is the sixth solo album by American composer Bill Laswell, released on July 29, 1997. While it may appear an anachronism in his catalog, fans of Bill Laswell will find City of Light an extension of ideas he has explored throughout his career. His strong interest in Eastern music and religion resulted in this 1997 collaboration with Janet Rienstra. Part sacred, spoken word, part meditative soundscape, City of Light takes as its inspiration the holy region of Banaras, India. Said to belong to Shiva, Banaras also contains the Ganges river: a place sought by Hindus for their cremation. Surrounding the texts is some of the most compelling music this genre has produced, featuring Trilok Gurtu on tablas, Coil (Peter Christopherson and John Balance) on electronics, Tetsu Inoue on sound collages, and Lori Carson on vocals. City of Light was recorded in Banaras, India, and mixed in Greenpoint, New York. It is about Banaras, a city older than history, tradition, and legends. It is Shiva's land, founded at the dawn of creation, and it is India's oldest and most fabled city. The Hindus call it Kashi, the luminous, the City of Light. Features a historical introduction by Hakim Bay.

UNIVERS ZERO Heresie LP
2022 repress, orange/gold vinyl; Sub Rosa present a reissue of Univers Zero's second album Heresie, originally released in 1979. 2010 remixed version (Cuneiform Records). A classic of chamber rock music, featuring heavy use of dissonance and dark, brooding, and extremely complex melodies. Comes on limited edition orange and gold vinyl; Includes insert; 380 gram sleeve."This music on this LP might have little to do with rock, and might also be a massive downer, but the quality of the writing and playing is extremely high. Michel Berckmans' solo work on oboe and bassoon work is magnificent, and Patrick Hanappier's string playing (violin and viola) also demonstrates the precision of a trained classical musician, along with demonic avant-garde scraping and howling on 'Jack The Ripper.' Best of all, Univers Zero never cheapens the effect of the music with any of the stock cartoon licks which are associated with the gothic genre today. Group members sound deadly serious about what they're doing, which might call their sanity into question, but which makes for an incredibly powerful listening experience. In fact, Heresie is a stunning one-of-a-kind item that has never been duplicated by anyone -- including Univers Zero." --William Tilland, AllMusic

Originally premiered in its earliest state at Tate Britain by William Bennett and Mary DeBlois in 2010, the Sixteen Ways Out magnum opus reflects over a decade's work of compositional refinement and elaborate studio expansion, and is the first Cut Hands release since 2014's highly-acclaimed Festival of the Dead on the Blackest Ever Black label (BLACKEST 010CD/LP). The end result is a mystical showcase of musical esoterica, its seventeen tracks fusing the most arcane elements of subliminal extra-linguistics, avant-garde transformational hypnosis, and dark self-help secrets. You will never hear anything quite like it. CD version includes 12pp booklet with expanded texts.

BLACK UHURU + SLY & ROBBIE Taxi Trax 2LP
Gatefold sleeve. "Black Uhuru and Sly & Robbie burst onto the reggae scene in 1977, at a time when Jamaican music was starting to purr and spin in circles and when, on the other hand, English punks were blasting everything that moved. Black Uhuru is sort of a Jamaican answer to the Sex Pistols and the Clash. Borderline insolent attitude, provocative looks, leather jackets, often aggressive words... Supported by skinned alive, Michael Rose, Duckie Simpson and Puma Jones howled the anger of the left behind in the ghettos of Kingston without preaching or Rasta illusion. For several years, Sly & Robbie held this new generation trio at arm's length on their TAXI label before signing them to island, the label which had launched 6-7 years earlier their elders Bob Marley, Burning Spear and Bunny Wailer. At the time in the service of Peter Tosh, the riddim twins found in Black Uhuru an ideal testing ground for their futuristic arrangements. From 1977 to 1980, Black Uhuru experienced a dazzling progression, which the TAXI TRAX compilation that TABOU1 released in association with TAXI and Diggers Factory sets out to retrace, through titles that have become Reggae anthems, such as 'Abortion' or 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' but also rarities hitherto released only on 45 rpm in Jamaica, such as the coves of the hits 'No No No', 'Sun Is Shining' or the surprising 'Aquarius' which has nothing to do with the original from the 5th Dimensions. In total, 4 sides filled with singles release by TAXI label, including the unstoppable dubs and above all several 'Dubplates' these acetates containing 100% unreleased mixes engraved to be played in sound-systems and which we were able to miraculously restore. To top it off, the famous graphic designer Bruno Tilley agreed to create a cover in the spirt of Black Uhuru: without concession, the photos being provided by Adrian Boot who followed the group from its beginnings, the liner notes being as for they were written by Noel Hawkes, author of numerous articles and books on Jamaican music, who interviewed Sly Dunbar and the band for the occasion. This time capsule is an idea introduction to this band that revolutionized Jamaican music in just a few years."

ABUNAI Chrysalis LP
Tartelet introduce the blissful, psychedelic electronic soul sound of Abunai on his sophomore album, Chrysalis. Across 11 songs the Oakland, CA-based multi-instrumentalist lays down a dreamlike style which should chime with fans of Tame Impala, Khruangbin, and James Blake alike. As well as the sun-soaked surrounding of his Californian home, Abunai's family connection to Hawaii casts its influence over an album which has all the makings of a crossover success. Look no further than early support from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Don Letts, and Wayne Snow for further proof this album is set to blowup. "My sound is definitely influenced by the live music I grew up within the Bay Area," says Abunai. "There's plenty of musical legacy here, including the '60s psychedelic and counterculture movements, the '90s rave scene, and the hyphy movement. I'm always trying to connect the dots and blend all of my influences. Chrysalis was, like so many recent albums, a project made largely in isolation during the pandemic, although Abunai did reach out to close collaborators Gravity and Raquel Marie to contribute some guest vocals, Kevin Farzad from Sure Sure for the acoustic drum parts and a few additional production touches from Tartelet regulars Glenn Astro and Max Graef. He bills the songs as an exercise in therapeutic self-care through lockdown as much as a balm for others. "It's music for healing," Abunai explains, "for the listener to be able to marinate in the slow tempos, the dreamy textures, the swirling vocals, and the lush synthesizers. It's very much about growth, re-emergence, and dreaming of a better future." As well as dealing in ear-catching pop melodies and sweet vocals, there's an underlying theme of the ocean, which stems from his coastal surroundings and his family roots in the Pacific. "I think the album is aquatic," he reflects, "and it feels like a voyage to me, or like a long shower, being reborn in the water. I played the album for my grandpa, who's a veteran sailor and pilot from Hawaii, and he said it was the perfect music to play when you're sailing on the open ocean at sunset." Cast in nostalgic, soft-focus tones and endlessly soothing for the soul, Chrysalis is your new favorite record for tender moments, hazy days, and starry-eyed reveries alike.

TOMPKINS, LAURIE Fatty CD
Fatty is a desperate suite of consoling, tanked songs by UK composer Laurie Tompkins. Friends' samples, instruments, and voices sag and soar through intimately deranged, muckily decadent productions. The mind runs fast while the body lags, sludge in a cage, fat coagulating on bones. Opulent throw-downs from Teresa Winter, Gwilly Edmondez, Eliza McCarthy, and Otto Willberg are the backdrop for Laurie's voice to heave into the sky, or lilt, baffled, through the gunk. Elsewhere, Gwilly and Jess Hickie-Kallenbach (Still House Plants) are all power, grain, and delight as they sing through a scrub of electric violin and too-smooth keys. Aaron Parker binges through manic arabesques for spinnet, xylophone and vibraphone on "Sombor Shuffle", as strangely graceful as the Nuggets' no 15. The album is accompanied by videos and images by Joel Wycherley, whose dummy burb of dredged-up ornaments, wasted dwellings, and moldy mother nature feels realer and faker than life. His 33-33 debut is one of Laurie's three spring '22 discs, between an album with Eliza McCarthy for Entr'acte and another with Eliza and Ashley Paul for Hyperdelia.Laurie Tompkins (b.1990) is a UK composer, performer and co-founder and co-director of the Slip label. From scores for samples, instruments and voices he creates a grabbable music that dreams and confounds. Bodies, things, words, and sounds strain under duress, looping their way through scenes of grubby presence, not-quite riff, moldy echo, and swollen bombast. Laurie co-directs Slip, which has released music by Yeah You, Mica Levi, Julia Reidy, Bass Clef, Object Collection, Mentos Gulgendo, Chaines & Competition. Old releases of his own include Ample Profanity (2018), with cellist Oliver Coates; Heat, War, Sweat, Law (2016); and Exorcise (2021), as Yes Indeed with bassist Otto Willberg.

ROGERS, GEMMA No Place Like Home CD
21st Century pop is curiously irrelevant: autotune, twelve "writers" on a single song, sensationalist yet skin-deep social commentary . . . with none of the joy, excitement and surprises of pop's lengthy heyday, from the Brill Building through the new wave era. Where did it go? That would be an apt introduction to an album of calculated throwbacks to a three-minute pop ideal . . . but No Place Like Home isn't that record. Tiny Global Productions doubt even Gemma could tell you where this collection of beguiling jewels came from exactly, each fully-formed, complete and satisfying, no two quite alike, and each devoid of Wet Leg or Dry Cleaning's crafty calculation, but with every bit of those acts' charm. The first single, "Stop", is based on an idea so simple that it's nearly unfathomable why no one had come conjured it earlier. Like toilet paper or a pair of scissors, the song feels entirely obvious until one ponders its late arrival. "Stop"'s motorik beat propels verses to a chorus of pure delight, bested by a bridge occurring so late in the tune that it comes across like a surprise second dessert. "My Idea Of Fun", a tale of frequent drunken regret, comes with a video of minimalist humor and visual brilliance. On other songs, Gemma channels acts Delta 5, Au Pairs, and The Raincoats, along with the humor of Ian Dury and a similar verité of London life found in the best of Madness. The more serious fare is equally compelling. "Rabbit Hole" projects a daring newness of young freedom, "Dance Of A Thousand Faces" veers into "Sprechstimme" and expands into a swooping chorus, the feel of which subtly conveys present-day tensions reminiscent of the Weimar era. "Tailspin" captures the dark feeling which comes burdened with real-time consciousness of a loss of control, while the album closer, "Frida", a tale of the loss of a dear friend manages to end in a guardedly upbeat tone. Gemma's debut album is sure to stir up deep interest.

BLUE ORCHIDS Angus Tempus Memoir CD
Blue Orchids created a singular sound of intellectualized psychedelia on their first 7" singles, The Flood (1980) and Work (1981), and despite their historically infrequent outings -- the band has released more new music in the last six years than in the whole of the thirty-five years prior to it -- the subtle originality of their sound permeates each of their releases, down primarily to original member Martin Bramah's singular vision. Yet each new release presents subtly directed changes to their work. Once at the brink of possible pop stardom that Bramah tossed aside by refusing to move down south to London -- which he did a few months later anyhow! -- his music has always had a rather perverse commerciality. Relative to the size of their respective catalogs, Bramah's songs have been covered by credible artists roughly as often as those by his first band, The Fall. The hazy oddness and off-kilter sound of Blue Orchids' debut LP, The Greatest Hit (Money Mountain) (1982), did not offset its popularity of the cognoscenti. It sold over 15,000 copies and saw its songs covered by the likes of Aztec Camera and pioneering American indie bands such as Slovenly, Dustdevils, and Fish & Roses, and it's still a cult classic today. The album recalls Blue Orchids' classic debut more than any other chapter of Bramah's catalog -- just take a look at the song titles! The lyrics were written in a freer verse than typical song lyrics allow, the music written later. John Paul Moran -- Bramah's longest-serving musical partner -- evokes the same eerie atmosphere from his keyboards as Una Baines did years before, with new member Tansy McNally (ukulele) and rhythm section Vincent Hunt (bass) and Howard Jones (drums) holding it all together. Angus Tempus Memoir is Bramah's most beguiling work in decades Forty years on, Martin Bramah's Blue Orchids revisit the darker side of The Money Mountain in their most captivating work since their 1982 debut album.

FEAR RATIO, THE Slinky CD
Slinky, a new album from The Fear Ratio, the collaborative project of Mark Broom and James Ruskin, is released on Tresor Records. In their first outing since They Can't Be Saved, released on Skam in 2020 (SKALD 036CD/LP), they enlist British rapper King Kashmere, who features on two tracks. Where James Ruskin has appeared on Tresor Records for his seminal albums Point 2 (2000), Into Submission (2001), The Dash (TRES 233LP, 2008) and his recent Siklikal EP (TRESOR 314EP, 2019), the only appearance of Mark Broom on the label is a 2002 remix of "The Golden Apple" by Eddie "Flashin" Fowlkes. The duo unveiled this new work and collaboration with King Kashmere in a live show for a 30th Anniversary event for Tresor Berlin televised on Arte, performing amidst a battery of lights and fogged-up refraction. It demonstrated their rough-hewn fundamentals, roving melodies and investigative power, newly advanced by voice. "Death Switch" is the first appearance by King Kashmere, savaging questions on segregation and suffering, encoding into our brains the much-repeated refrain -- "You wanna know, why they wanna flip the death switch." "Spinning Globe" captures Kashmere in a gritty flow over a swaggering beat, bouncing and resonant. This un-sanded voice lends an enhanced texture and tension to the highly-processed sonic palette of Broom and Ruskin, accumulating with innate mettle. Elsewhere, "Appi" dredges depths as widescreen beats lurk, digital artifacts pave the way to a hauntingly melancholic coda. "Lacovset" features singer Ella Fleur who has worked with Mark Broom on his solo release Fu?nfzig. It enacts a pointillist gated vocal alongside dolphin-like percussive communications. On "LFIVE", the duo embalms their sonic textures with digital effects that flutter austerely with syncopation in the crosswind of a beat that recalibrates at points. An urgency slowly draws in on title track Slinky through fizzing electronics and fractured drums all corroded. "Effem" locates a semblance of euphoria, with a trance-inducing release led by swirling arpeggios. Closer "KZAP" finds the calmest moment on the record, with its wafting, nebulous synths and swamped hip hop beat. Slinky finds an ever-evolving project, The Fear Ratio shapeshifting by bringing in the voice into their work and continually pushing with their incredibly-effected rhythmic styles and peculiar, wandering synthesis.

VINTAGE CROP Kibitzer CD
Geelong, Melbourne's favorite sons Vintage Crop return with their much-anticipated fourth album, Kibitzer. Running with the ball that 2020's Serve To Serve Again (UTR 131B-LP/LP) punted forward, this album marks another energetic break towards the goal for Vintage Crop. Kibitzer sees the band define their field of play, more melodic at times, still bruising, forever droll. These ten tracks of "snappy as elastic" Australian punk are packed with tensile riffage, hefty beats and witty refrains of everyman curiosity. Kibitzer was written in quick response to their critically lauded Serve To Serve Again album. Harsh guitars, a brutish rhythm section and a knack for always having the right words at hand are still abundant, but this time Vintage Crop's songs expand upon their forceful nature with greater harmonic arrangement. Kibitzer delves into themes of identity, resilience and acceptance; some of the more upbeat notions that the band have dealt with to date. "Casting Calls" opens the record, slamming through the speakers with gusto and setting the tone for the following 30 minutes. Accepting your limitations and taking pride in your work are key themes on Kibitzer. In fact ideas around learning, growing and being able to take things in your stride are strongly felt through their entire body of work. These themes hit home with the album's title too, with Cherry feeling that 'Kibitzer' is an apt way to describe a lot of the band's focus. Musically the band have expanded their palette on this album; exploring a world of rhythmic harmony and a newfound vocal melodicism. There's also greater lyrical elaboration and considered song structures at play. "The Duke" is a mob of rollicking chants and heavy hitting, catchy to the core. "The Bloody War" is a more sanguine reflection of tumbling drums, struck chords and shrill keyboard warble. "Hold The Line" turns the wry amusement of dealing with cold callers into a fidgety anthem of knowing frustration. Whilst "Switched Of" even welcomes the introduction of horns (courtesy of Heidi Peel) to the group's repertoire, ushering in an unexpected serenity into their tough sound. Mixed and mastered by Mikey Young.

BAD BRAINS Black Dots LP
Limited 2022 restock By the early summer of 1979 the Bad Brains were already tearing up Washington D.C. They were armed with a tape they made at rehearsal, a real rugged thing, and were looking for people to play it to. The Slickee Boys heard it and suggested the band go out to record these songs at the fledgling Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, VA. What you are holding in your hands is the band's first full-length session of any kind in a recording studio. At that time, Inner Ear was Don Zientara's basement. Don had a four-track Teac 1/4" tape deck and a small drum booth to one side of the basement. Doc and Darryl set up in the main space while Earl somehow got himself into the "closet" with his drum kit. HR was in the backyard with the vocal mic (you can hear Don's son speaking to HR between tracks along with some crickets, too) and Don was set up in the kitchen upstairs. This day everything was just right and the band played straight through their live set of that time including "Black Dots" and "Pay to Cum," songs that were just too fast to ever be performed live to the band's satisfaction. The set on this record represents all of the band's songs, their first month's output, starting with the first song the band ever wrote, "Don't Need It." As is true with all four-track recordings, some decisions were made "going to tape," most notable is the eerie reverb on the drums, and these choices are forever a part of the mix. Formed as Mind Power a year earlier, it wasn't until their early vocalist Sid McCray showed up at Darryl's apartment in SE D.C. with his records and safety pins that the band transformed itself into the progressive punk outfit now known as Bad Brains. They were one dose Dead Boys topped off with a couple of shots of The Damned mixed with the Sex Pistols and The Clash. All the material on this record was written while the band lived together in a house on Bayway in Maryland. Doc had acquired the house from the manager of the Rustler Steak House where he had been working. HR and Darryl got jobs there as well, though they didn't last and ended up washing cars at the dealership down the street. Earl was washing clothes at the community hospital. Doc then got a job for himself and HR at Atlantic Research and Development, a bomb factory that manufactured Stinger and MX missiles. Darryl, without a driver's license, would pick them up from there at midnight and take them to rehearsal at the Bayway house. They lived at that house for about six months from late 1978 to mid-1979. They left after playing a series of basement shows at parties they threw. Sid would get on stage and start the set singing "Regulator." His girlfriend Tally would run on stage, tackle him and knock him off the stage and HR would then take the mic for the rest of the show. It wasn't long before Sid left the singing completely to HR and all of his sonorous vocalizations and lyricism. Needless to say, the house got a bit trashed and when they vacated Darryl moved in with Sid and everyone else moved back in with their parents. The next step was their first club shows; at the Atlantis (later named the 9:30 Club) and Madam's Organ (in Adams Morgan, MO with the Yippies and Youth Against Racism), conquering the D.C. punk/new wave scene with their sonic onslaught and clever musical curves. It was at this point that this record was made. Darryl got thrown out into the street by the bouncers after the band opened for The Damned at the Bayou, resulting in the band being banned from the club. With the Atlantis in reconstruction and the Bayou now off-limits, the possibilities in D.C. were shrinking for the band. New York had CBGB's, Max's Kansas City, Tier 3, 2 + 2, A7, Hurrahs, The Eighties, The Pep lounge and squats. The scene was jumping so the band headed off to NYC for the first time. They never looked back. On 180 gram vinyl with a full-color innersleeve.

WHITE, RALPH It's More In My Body Than In My Mind LP
LP version. Recorded in Austin, Texas in March of 2020, just days before the city and the rest of the world shut down, Ralph White spent two days with producer, Jerry David DeCicca (Will Beeley, Ed Askew) and recording engineer, Don Cento, capturing a raw and wild set of performances. Ralph, having recently converted his van into a mobile living and touring quarters equipped with a wood-burning stove, left Austin, the city where he was born over 70 years ago, and retreated to an Arizona commune where he began building a new house in the desert hills to escape the virus and insanity of daily living. Opener "Lead Man", signals the beginning of a wild and unsettling record, at times dark and foreboding, at others eerie and enigmatic, taking you a step further into Ralph's very own American mystery zone. Ralph takes you on a journey through his myriad of travels: from Dock Boggs to Syd Barrett to William Faulkner to Stella Chiweshe to Blind Uncle Gaspard -- scratching banjo, rasping train whistle hollers, rolling kalimba, rousing accordion, taut shimmers of guitar, caustic fiddle, and lyrics that could have been hidden amongst the dusty inner groove of a lost Harry Smith 78 -- weaving in-and-out of streams of consciousness, time and place. Just a few of the titles: "Lead Man" is a bleak and longing look in the mirror; "Motel 6", plays out a haunting lament set upon roadside America; "The River Daughter", reimagines life on the sandbar, akin to McCarthy's Suttree; "Lonesome Fugitive", acts as a cautionary ode to a life spent looking over one's shoulder. In addition to his solo work, White has recorded or performed with a diverse group of folk and avant-garde musicians: Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Jandek, Jack Rose, Eugene Chadbourne, Michelle Shocked, Sir Richard Bishop, and Michael Hurley. Artwork of Max Kuhn."This is what Ralph White really sounds like. It's what time passing really sounds like. It's what a look really feels like. This record is someone touching you all over!" --Bill Callahan"White was a member of well-loved punk bluegrass outfit Bad Livers, but his solo work is possessed of a much more lonesome spark, exaggerating the implied drone at the heart of the music of Dock Boggs and The Stanley Brothers -- White plays wooden six-string banjo, violin, button accordion and kalimba and his voice has a high, eerie quality to it -- extremely psychedelic." --David Keenan, The Wire

WHITE, RALPH Something About Dreaming LP
Here's artist Max Kuhn on hearing the new Ralph White recordings for the first time: "I was driving a familiar round trip across the high desert when I first put it on. It immediately spoke to me. In the lyrics there's a familiar geography for me, a familiar emotional landscape for all of us. And maybe it was driving an almost 40-year-old truck on sun baked and cracked asphalt in July, but it's like you can hear his songs coming apart -- the cadence, the rhymes stumbling and defying expectations, consistency but they just keep moving. You have no choice but to go with it. Probably a good lesson for how to live in this era we're in, cracking up but keeping it all running somehow, trying to make something pretty with the time."Recorded in Austin, Texas in March of 2020, just days before the city and the rest of the world shut down, Ralph White spent two days with producer, Jerry David DeCicca (Will Beeley, Ed Askew) and recording engineer, Don Cento, capturing a raw and wild set of performances. L'ENTOURLOOP La Clarte Dans La Confusion CD
Unstoppable elders of the L'Entourloop collective, King James and Sir Johnny present their long-awaited third album, La Clarté Dans La Confusion ("Clarity in Confusion"). Produced in their now legendary Bandulu Studio, the 20 tracks of this new album are the result of a patient production process, carried out with care and passion. Throughout the album, L'Entourloop testifies in its own way via a puzzle of film samples, of this strange pandemic period, using all its savoir faire when it comes to make the people dance. Since 1964, when the song "My Boy Lollipop" flooded the European radio airwaves, L'Entourloop's love for reggae and its culture has never stopped growing. With this third album, they wanted to pay tribute to the legendary pioneers of this incredible movement -- artists and producers such as Tom Wong, Count Machuki, Prince Buster, and Lee "Scratch" Perry. An album which is a true declaration of love for soundsystem culture and its children -- reggae, dancehall and hip-hop. The success of their previous albums Chickens in Your Town (XRP 1802LP/1803CD, 2015) and Le Savoir Faire (2017), with their famous "Banging Hip-Hop Inna Yardie Style" quickly brought L'Entourloop into the spotlight, along with their hundreds of shows performed all over Europe. With no less than 32 guests from all over the world, MCs fling lyrics like guns like in a western movie and the new album is no exception. On the reggae side, Jamaican legends such as Ken Boothe and Bounty Killer meet new generation stars such as Alborosie, Kabaka Pyramid, Queen Omega, and Marcus Gad. On the hip-hop side Chali 2Na from legendary US group Jurassic 5, Swedish MC Promoe from Looptroop Rockers, US rapper Rêverie, the excellent JuJu Rogers, French beatmaker Degiheugi, and the irresistible South African female rapper Dope St Jude all make appearances. The UK vibe can also be felt with features from jungle and dancehall pioneers General Levy and Tippa Irie as well as heavyweights of the grime scene Flowdan, Lady Chann, and Killa P. Fellow French artists are also in the spotlight with guests such as Big Red, O.B.F, and Manudigital. To complete this amazing cast, L'Entourloop has once again called on the incomparable Troy Berkley from Bermuda and the talented trumpeter N'Zeng, formerly of Le Peuple de l'Herbe, to accompany the collective on the road along with a new addition -- excellent Dutch rapper BlabberMouf. Also features N'Zeng, Lion in Bed, Lyricson, Red Fox, Dope Saint Jude, LMK, Reverie, Dawa, The Architect, Las Ninyas del Corro, and Blackout JA.
