PRICE, LLOYD Mr Personality: The R&B Hits 1952-60 LP
"Without question, Lloyd Price was one of the key protagonists for the rock 'n' roll explosion of the mid-fifties. Taking the gritty style of New Orleans R&B, where he started, he adapted it with innovative instrumental arrangements alongside the emergence of rock 'n' roll during the late '50s. Before the likes of Martin Luther King started smashing the cultural barriers down, Lloyd "Mr Personality" Price was already bringing the black and white youth together through his music. Of his 1952 hit, Lloyd pronounced 'I revolutionized the South! Before 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy' white kids were not really interested in this music.' He went on to achieve a remarkable run of pop and R&B successes throughout the decade with over 30 chart entries, a combined 11 top ten hits and four number 1's. This stunning 18-track collection concentrates on the biggest R&B hits he enjoyed from the debut smash hit 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy' in 1952 through 'Personality,' 'I'm Gonna Get Married,' 'Come Into My Heart' to his last top ten hit in 1960 'Question.' Along the way, the listener can hear not only how 'Mr. Personality' influenced rock 'n' roll, but also how he embraced the new genre with great success."

GENNARI, FRANCESCO Frammenti Cassette
2024 reprint. Francesco Gennari is trained as a classical pianist and he commits himself to sound exploration through modular synth practice as further evolution of his musical journey. Gennari's origins are with black-and-white keys, noise-punk bands, and DIY instrument building. This stunning debut, titled Frammenti, is the culmination of all of Gennari's interests. Through simple ideas developed with classical techniques like counterpoint and harmonic expansions, Francesco uses the modular setup as a virtual companion, allowing him to do what he wants while remaining open to what the machine whispers to him. Francesco's music charms with minimal rhythmic patterns, sonic manipulation, and lush ambient soundscapes comprised of short ideas full of variations. GRAVES & DON PULLEN, MILFORD The Complete Yale Concert, 1966 CD
2024 restock. For a performance at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in spring of 1966, percussionist Milford Graves invited pianist Don Pullen to play duets. The two musicians had worked together in a band fronted by saxophonist and clarinetist Giusseppi Logan, with whom they had recorded two LPs in 1965 for ESP-Disk'. Graves was already a daunting presence in free music. One step at a time, he was busy transforming the role of drumming in jazz, introducing a new way of dealing with unmetered time and accomplishing this task with technique that was almost inconceivable. His experience playing timbales in Latin bands had been formative, suggesting that the snare could be used as accent rather than beat-keeper, but by the mid '60s he'd worked up a holistic approach to sound and energy that was the most radical of his improvising percussion contemporaries. And with a simpatico accomplice like Pullen, who would go on to have an illustrious career with Charles Mingus, co-fronting a band with George Adams, and as a soloist and bandleader. This early setting finds Pullen is at his most hard-hitting, and his piano concept as heard here lays to rest dubious claims of Cecil Taylorism. Inspired by their performance, Graves and Pullen issued an LP, In Concert at Yale University, Vol. 1 on their own Self-Reliance Program imprint (1966). The vinyl is impossibly rare, especially its first copies, which sported hand-painted covers by the musicians. A second volume titled Nommo (1967) was subsequently issued, and it too is a highly prized platter. None of this music has ever been available digitally. The tapes were lost, so in putting this production together -- in the works for ten years -- virgin copies of the LPs were used. One CD includes the two complete LPs together with original cover designs, a gallery of hand-painted LPs, and a photo of Graves and Pullen selling them at a Nation of Islam convention. An insert modeled after the original one presents an interview with Graves about the production of the records. This is beyond the holy grail of free music. It is as vital and challenging today as it was more than five decades ago. Corbett Vs. Dempsey is honored to have collaborated with Milford Graves on this historic reissue. Personnel: Milford Graves - drums and percussion; Don Pullen - piano.

SCIENTIST Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires LP
2024 repress; LP version. Rids the World of the Curse of the Vampires (1981) not only ably displays Scientist's varied approach, but also clocks in as one of his best outings. Scientist keeps things lively with plenty of reverb and echo-treated percussion, ghostly piano parts, video game sound effects, and other wobbly interjections from the mixing board. The record's expert evocation of the Halloween spirit also includes some fiendishly-voiced intros, the cover art's cartoon potpourri of horror film characters, and the dubious claim made in the liner notes that Scientist mixed it all at midnight on Friday the 13th. Along with Keith Hudson's Pick a Dub (1974) and Lee Perry's Blackboard Jungle Dub (1973), this is one of the essential dub albums.

POWER, RYAN World of Wonder LP
"From the sui generis pop Wonsongwriting mind of Ryan Power comes World of Wonder, his first album since 2020's Mind the Neighbors (FTR 519LP). Following a string of influential releases on the Vermont label NNA tapes, World of Wonder is Power's second release on Massachusetts imprint Feeding Tube Records. While its predecessor presented Power in a largely stripped down, acoustic setting with lush horn and string arrangements, World of Wonder has Power return to his characteristic hyper-produced, high-fidelity home studio to craft a set of ten songs which harmonically undulate, consistently surprise, and which all further solidifies him as one of the most engaging songsmiths of our time. Power, 48, describes the lyrical content of this album as reckoning with a 'midlife crisis' -- or maybe more appropriately, myriad crises -- which encompass breakups, regrets, reconciliations, a horrific bike accident, childhood traumas, and personal forgiveness through it all. Despite the remarkable candor with which these morose issues are delivered, Power makes sure to convey them with levity and a surprising amount of humor. Power has always lyrically been an open-book, and World of Wonder is perhaps his most personally revealing statement to date. To that point, he says: 'I love art where at one second it's hysterically funny, but then at the next it's tugging at your heartstrings.' World of Wonder is laden with imminently catchy earworms, and even as they oscillate in mood and approach, Power never once sacrifices his penchant for songcraft and intricate, crystalline structures. The album opens with the infectious masterpiece 'Psychic Mechanic,' whose fitting opening line has Power wondering about 'how many people [he's] disappointed,' within a 'jungle of misguided faith.' Other highlights include the buoyant 'Was That Love,' a reckoning of previous relationships; the highly emotive ballad 'Back Online' where Power croons about how 'everything is a little precarious;' 'Silent Star' where Power mourns the loss of a friendship with the potent 'It's true, I still love you/it's true, we are through,' the meaning of which comes across despite the line being delivered in something of a British accent; 'Dracula Reality' where the singer reflects on being painted as Dracula by his grandfather for Halloween in 1983 but using that as a trojan horse for questions of identity and anxiety of attention on himself. World of Wonder concludes with the exquisite eponymous track where Power begins by asserting that '[he's] amazed by the world around [him]' and that he gets 'lost in the world of wonder' -- within Ryan Power's idiosyncratic pop universe, we listeners likewise get lost and are astounded by his singular accomplishments." --Sam Weinberg, 2024

RASPBERRY BULBS The World Is Empty, The Heart Is Full LP
12 years after Hospital Productions released the first Raspberry Bulbs album, the band returns to the label with their most focused offering to date. Gone are the interludes found on their last two albums. This time RB has distilled all their strengths into 11 concise songs. Listeners may be tempted to mention "noise rock" or "post punk" in describing the sound, but RB thinks outside the limits of any genre, and stands in contrast to those whose approach amounts to failed exercises in style. The band spent two years boiling each song down to its essence, while sacrificing none of the power and dynamics found on previous records. Somehow the results are both more metallic and more melodic. The vocals, in particular, are fittingly more venomous this time, with their vitriol aimed at the current narrow-minded, oppressive "underground" landscape. Prepare yourself. Recorded among the ruins of the Belvedere Inn, Stamford New York, in 2023. Digital download code included.

LAMBDA SOND Waglands 1921 Cassette
2024 reprint. A quiet, intense and deeply personal new collection from Lambda Sond. Waglands 1921 exists in a vacuum somewhere between Pauline Oliveros, spiritual jazz, analog drone, and heavy new age. Unlike the first two Lambda Sond cassettes on the Cassauna label, (2011's Chronological Compression and 2014's Chronological Compression II) this work is characterized by unrepeated melodies, unforgettably understated harmonies, timeless drones and feelings made musical. This poetic music contains vignettes of emotion, memory and melancholy that are as uplifting, hopeful and grounding as a deep breath. Waglands 1921 exists at the verge of inspiration where hesitation is withheld and truths are articulated once but felt forever. Waglands 1921 is Lambda Sond's first recording for Important Records.

GLAXO BABIES Dreams Interrupted: The Bewilderbeat Years 1978-1980 2LP
Restocked; last copies, reduced price. A definitive compilation of Glaxo Babies' first period career. Glaxo Babies was one of the most exciting British post-punk band of the era. Raised in Bristol -- altogether with such local influential acts like Maximum Joy, The Transmitters and obviously The Pop Group -- Glaxo Babies formed in late 1977. The band signed to local label Heartbeat Records (marketed by Cherry Red), with their first release being the This Is Your Life EP in February 1979; in the same year they released the single "Christine Keeler". This led to them recording their first session for BBC radio's John Peel the following April, and the track "It's Irrational", from this session, opened the seminal 1979 Bristol Compilation album Avon Calling. Their aggro mix of in your face lyrics and groovy bassline led to a unique formula, with both their feet in the post-punk scene and the uprising black jazz crossover. The so-called white funk was the plat du jour, even if the band soon achieved a straight and original personality. Fully remastered and licensed. 180 gram vinyl; edition of 500.

VA Wild Paarty Sounds Volume One LP
First volume -- though the second never happened -- of this ongoing collaboration between post-punk stalwarts Cherry Red and home of the western dub On U Sound, originally released in 1981. Adrian Sherwood obviously sitting behind the desk and a cast of marvelous artists leading the way for a reggae renaissance. Stolen and contaminated songs, you may take this as a reference point for 12 unreleased tracks showing the best of the UK underground rhythms. A further development of the Jamaican heritage, with handmade electronics and a forward-thinking production. Mothmen's "Afghani Dub" is one of the leading tracks here, with future members of Durutti Column and Simply Red on board, this is a mystical post-industrial trip through upbeat rhythms. Along the way you'll find the over-the-top vocal performance of Judy Nylon -- more akin to certain no wave expressionism -- futuristic vibes from Suns Of Arqa, contribution from New Age Steppers supergroup and Creation Rebel teaming up with the so-called Jamaican "Voice of Thunder", Prince Far I. DI FRANCO, LINDA Rise Of The Heart LP
Restocked; last copies, reduced price. Reissue, originally released in 1986. Just a single album and a bunch of singles, rising star Linda Di Franco debuted in 1985 and left the scene all of a sudden in 1986. Her first album was a combined effort produced by Don Was (Blue Note's Renaissance music man and previously leader of post disco combo Was Not Was), a gentle selection of soul-pop ballads and lushy synth arrangements. With leading single "My Boss" the album shows an ethereal continuum with an excellent rendition of Burt Bacharach "The Look Of Love". Recorded in London, Detroit, and New York, Rise Of The Heart is definitely a keystone in the rising club culture revolution verging on the more existentialist pop aesthetic. AK MUSICK AK Musick LP
2024 restock, last copies; LP version. Mental Experience present first ever reissue of AK Musick, originally released in 1972. Radical, freaked-out sound with hints of free-jazz, improv and avant-garde, AK Musick was an improv collective assembled by clarinetist Hans Kumpf to "make music in a very democratic way". The five players had a classical education but they were also influenced by avant-garde composers like Helmut Lachenmann and Johannes Fritsch. Their only album, AK Musick, was recorded at the famous Bauer Studios in just three hours and engineered by Martin Wieland, who had previously worked with Keith Jarrett for the ECM label. A wide arrangement of instruments were used: clarinet, cello, oboe, organ, piano, darbuka, tam-tam, ektare, flute, zither. Includes the amazing "Impro-Vision" which sounds like electronic music, but using only natural instruments. AK Musick saw the light in 1972 on Kumpf's own AKM Records label. It was a private homemade edition of 150 copies, with spray-printed covers. During the '70s, AKM Records was also home to other free-jazz rarities like Free Blacks by Perry Robinson/Hans Kumpf (1976), where Hans also collaborated with his friend Wolfgang Dauner, and In Time by Theo J?rgensmann (1977). MILLER, LLOYD Oriental Jazz LP
2024 restock. "Born in 1938, and raised in Glendale, California, Lloyd Miller has had one of the most unusual careers in all of jazz. By age 12 he had declared an intent to make his living as a jazz musician, and by high school he had already begun to experiment, shunning swing music's mechanical perfection, and chafing at his parents' desire for him to nurture his talents with formal training. This tumultous relationship with his parents would eventually lead to a stint in a psychatric hospital, before reuniting with them in moving to Iran, his father having accepted a job working for the Shah. Stops in Hong Kong, Japan and Pakistan on the way to Iran deepened Miller's connection to other cultures he'd first felt while listening to old world music compilations. He felt a definite calm and peace, an immense respect from everyone towards everyone else, and immersed himself in other cultures and languages immediately. Miller spent a year in Iran with his family, picking up Farsi after a few short months, and steadily gaining more and more of an appreciation for how deep the roots of Persian art run. However, still committed to his decision forge a career in jazz, Lloyd left Tehran in 1958 to head to Europe to see if he could make a living from jazz music. Miller kicked around the continent, first in Germany, then in Switzerland, Sweden and Brussels. He collaborated and performed alongside 60s jazz legend Jef Gilson, and experimented with exotic instrumentation before returning to America to resume his studies at Brigham Young University in Utah. In the years following his stint with Gilson, Miller had become more and more disillusioned with both modern music and modern society, which had ashewed jazz for rock music, which he detested. In Miller's conception, for a music to have value it had to have a deep connection to a tradition, specifically connecting jazz to African lore. To Miller, something like 'Tuareg African music is blues, just with no chord changes.' Oriental Jazz was recorded, compiled and self-released in 1968 while Miller was studying at Brigham Young. The record, originally pressed in a quantity of 300 copies, sought to combine a cool, modal style with the exotic arrays of instruments and styles that Miller had picked up during his travels. Miller included songs he'd cut with Gilson in his Parisian studio years before, and a solo piano piece that he recorded in one of the school's practice rooms. Despite Lloyd's professed aversion to modernity, there nevertheless is something strikingly new sounding about this music, which fits together in startling juxtapositions. Traces of Bill Evans, Stan Getz and Jimmy Giuffre rub shoulders with Persian santur, Arab oud and Turkish saz music. Copies of Oriental Jazz languished in Miller's home for years after numerous failed bids for record contracts, before finally ending up in the hands of record collectors decades later. After its release however, he would find a second life after returning to Iran, doing field recordings, and eventually hosting a weekly television show that programmed both American jazz and the best traditional Persian musicians he could find. It was not to last however, as he abruptly abandoned the country to return to the US in the late 1970s, predicting the arrival of the Islamic Revolution."

KREFTING, MATT Finer Points LP
[some copies have minor jacket bumps] "I have known Matt since the very early '00s when he was still a student at Hampshire College. We became great friends right away and have remained so since. Matt has been an on-and-off member of IFCO (full time now), and we have worked together on a number of other projects. This is to say, I might be a little biased. (But everyone is biased, no matter how much they write in the third person.) Matt has been doing solo tape music for well over ten years now. My memory says it started out as a live thing with a mixing desk and a bunch of cheap cassette machines. (My memory says a lot of things.) I'm not sure exactly what he does now, but it is something similar and still involves cassette tapes. There are loads of people doing music with field recordings and tapes, etc., and, for the most part, the music is a messy yawn-fest. That is not The Krefting Way. Each of the six pieces on Finer Points has a limited number of elements that slowly revolve. Each track is discrete in its sound pallet but made in a similar fashion. The overall effect is like the bottles in a Joseph Cornell box. My favorite bottle is the one for a guitar (Spanish?). It manages to hit a sweet spot between hypnotic and unsettling. The whole LP is great and expertly sequenced. (The lost art of recording!) Matt's releases are like desert flowers that bloom and are gorgeous, then they are gone. A tip of the glass to Bill Nace as well. He has kept Open Mouth running for quite a while, and as anyone who has ever run a small label will tell you, 'It's a fool's errand.' It is, too -- but if it weren't for fools like Bill, the world would be missing a lot of great music." --Scott Foust

The in-your-face hardcore of EP Leather, Bristles, Studs And Acne paved the way for super-charged debut LP, City Baby Attacked By Rats, which hit the number two position on the British indie charts on release in 1982, as well as the mainstream top 20, despite being released by tiny independent, Clay Records. With a touch of Motorhead and Sabbath beneath their straight-up hardcore, City Baby is where the legend begins, capturing G.B.H. at their bloodiest. Gatefold sleeve with exclusive photos by Alison Braun. Double-sided lyrics insert included.

VA Discharged LP
Originally released in 1992, this is an all-Discharge covers tribute compilation including Extreme Noise Terror, Concrete Sox, Disaster, Raw Noise, the legendary Japanese crusties C.F.U.D.L., among others. A lot like human sacrifice was an everyday experience for Mesoamerica as a bloody offering to the gods that birthed the world; so too is this an intense testament to the gods that started it all. You wouldn't expect anything less than aural warfare with the likes of Extreme Noise Terror who bleed the battery acid from the veins of "No T.V Sketch" and "They Declare It" with their Earache playmates. Concrete Sox do punishing justice to the unholy "This Is To Be," leaving one unable to move, let alone "Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing," as Nausea reminds the listener of with their rendition of an instant Discharge classic from a decade earlier. Also featuring Excrement Of War, Societic Death Slaughter, and Scamp.

PANGHALINA Lava CD
In Filipino, the word "Panghalina" roughly translates to magnetism. It's a fitting name for this grouping of three of Australia's emergent voices in the realms of improvisation, extended technique and unusual song-form. Maria Moles, Bonnie Stewart, and Helen Svoboda have each carved out a unique place for themselves in the antipodean music landscape and here, on Lava, they create a gravitational orbit around each other's' practices. This cyclic approach has produced an utterly communal sound language that is equal parts atmospheric, harmonic and exploratory. A note from Maria, Bonnie and Helen: "Lava is an ode to the connections between sound, emotion and human experience, exploring the interplay of sonic duality. The overlapping duos within the trio framework brought forth uncharted possibilities, allowing each of us to weave our individuality into the improvisations. The crafting of the record revealed the project's distinctiveness. With an instant resonance, we found ourselves drawn to this project -- a canvas that allows various aspects within our artistic practices to flourish. The album encapsulates the dialogue between our spirits and the music, celebrating the alignment of artistic kinship. We've named the album Lava, drawing inspiration from the melding of our sounds that resonates with the characteristics of molten rock -- its subdued, unhurried motion juxtaposed against its fiery core. Just as molten rock emerges from a terrestrial planet, our collaboration springs forth from a distinctive sonic realm that is exclusively our own."

SEX, THE Unmask Yourself LP
"My adventure buddies? The silent, enigmatic Patti, former singer of the mysterious No Suicide, and the young, faithful Chris, a passionate Police fan, we met on the battlefield and he immediately became my brother. For him, learning to play the bass was a way to get close to Sting, in other words, just one step below Paradise. Patti instead played keyboards as an extension of her mysterious and glacial presence, so still and distant that the audience sometimes wondered if she was real. And then there was my fixation for the drum machine, a futuristic device which could transform the drumming sweat into an invisible, yet physical, dreamlike pulsation. A particular combination of characters and a special astral conjunction, that's what you need to get a nucleus source of sonic emotions, and in some ways this is what we were. You could clearly feel it during the concerts. When at the end of '81 My Mercenary God lost their drummer and had to disband, I felt clearly that the music had already changed. Our old '70s rock and roll sound was no longer representative of the day. We were like some sort of yesterday's newspaper. Thus I Sex was born (later The Sex). According to Freudian thought that sees sexual instinct as the driving force behind every (creative or destructive) human act. And in fact we immediately started creating, destroying, assembling and deconstructing our sound. Suddenly 'tomorrow became now.' It was an outburst of creative independence in the form of homemade cassettes put together with makeshift tools, at least until the arrival of the legendary four-track recorder. I was 19 years old, Chris was only 17. Nothing more than kids after all. Yet we were already veterans, veterans of a lost war. Wise, naive, disillusioned dreamers, everything and the opposite of everything. But, above all, we were totally devoted to our creative delirium up to the point of losing touch with reality, crossing limits, breaking down barriers and almost bordering on madness. Perhaps we were just too involved, especially if in relationship with what we could receive in return. We always spread our energies as if there was no future. We unconsciously felt that we had to live in the moment, now or never, and in retrospect it really was like that, and this is why these songs exist now." --The Sex

SIR LORD BALTIMORE Kingdom Come LP
2024 restock. Trading Places present a reissue of Sir Lord Baltimore's Kingdom Come, originally released in 1970. Hard-rocking Brooklyn trio Sir Lord Baltimore's highly sought-after debut album is a legendary precursor of the heavy metal genre, a 1971 Creem review of the disc perhaps the first to ever use the term. The group benefited from the songwriting and production team of Mike Appel and Jim Cretecos, Appel the future manager of Bruce Springsteen and Cretecos already heady from success with The Partridge Family; recorded at Vantone Studios in New Jersey, it was mixed to fine effect by Eddie Kramer at Electric Ladyland, fresh from his work with Jimi Hendrix. Guitarist Louis Dambra co-arranged the material with Appel and Cretecos; he had earlier played in garage band The Koala as Louis Caine, and here his screeching guitar is a major draw, backed by plodding bass from Gary Justin, as front man John Garner shrieks his vocals while pounding furious drumbeats. Aside from a tough cover of Ray Charles's "I Got A Woman" and a track inspired by Yeats poem, "Lake Isle Of Innersfree," the album features heavily-stoned acid rock originals, delivered the Sir Lord Baltimore way. 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve. Licensed by Cherry Red.

J DILLA Jay Love Japan LP
2024 repress. "J Dilla is widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time, having supplied timeless soundbeds for the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, The Pharcyde, Busta Rhymes, Common, De La Soul, The Roots, D'Angelo, Erykah Babu, Madlib, and many more. In 2005, rumors began circulating about an album called Jay Love Japan, a J Dilla solo project inspired by one of Jay Dee's favorite locations to visit on tour. After Dilla's untimely death in early 2006, the album became a lost classic shrouded in mystery, with only unofficial bootlegs and promo versions available. An official CD version was eventually released in 2008, but quickly went out of print. Now, the album is finally receiving the official release it always deserved."
