MOIN You Never End LP
You Never End is the third album from Valentina Magaletti, Tom Halstead, and Joe Andrews (Moin) out via AD 93. Its title alone expresses the teetering and shifting nature of both the album and band. This record marks the Moin's shift into a new phase with vocal collaborations across the album from Olan Monk, james K, Coby Sey and Sophia Al-Maria. The album's collaborators all have voices that are alluring in their own right whilst hard to pin down: from james K's ethereal, reverb drenched vocals, Coby Sey's words that bounce and echo across London's concrete streets and Olan Monk's emotive songwriting, while artist Sophie Al-Maria's voice and thoughts are known to stretch across her multidisciplinary practice as an artist, filmmaker and writer. The unique mystique of each collaborator is maintained throughout the record while simultaneously opening Moin up to new possibilities, in a gentle shifting alchemy. Continuing their enigmatic re-configuring of the traditional band, Moin use a mix of conventional and unique production and compositional techniques. Subtly re-framing the current conversation about what the band in 2024 needs to be, Moin walk the line between what's reassuringly familiar and what's unsettling and inquisitive. You Never End is a more sensitive record in sentiment, it re-contextualizes grunge, shoegaze and indie rock with a weirdly comforting melancholy while still sounding direct and alive. Showing Moin at their most accessible, the vocal collaborations bring the most articulate moments and lucid emotion while still remaining uniquely within Moin's established world. Alongside this, the record fine tunes the elements of electronic production that have always been a feature of the band's unique sound in a deeply subtle way. Elements are simpler and more direct, offering robust functional support as well as textural and emotional resonance. Together they show the potential for both practices to intertwine. You Never End is both produced and mixed by Tom and Joe, demonstrating the extended range of control the pair have over the band's sound, and their ability to truly hold together Moin's intricate world.

BLADES, JAMES WILLIAM Pare De Sufrir LP
Artist, composer and producer James William Blades' score Pare De Sufrir is presented via AD 93. Pare De Sufrir (translating to 'End of Suffering') is the official soundtrack to A.G Rojas' film of the same title. Spanish-born, Southern California-raised filmmaker AG Rojas is known for creating videos and working with the likes of Jamie xx, Gil Scott Heron, Kamasi Washington, Spiritualized, and Mitski. Rojas' sensitive eye and subjectivity has brought him from the world of music videos to creating his first independent film: a 48-minute featurette following three people as they navigate the liminal space between life and the afterlife in an attempt to heal themselves and each other. Rojas reached out to Blades after coming across his score for Keeping Time (dir. Darol Olu Kae). An intimate and unusual process unfolded. Rojas explained to Blades the personal narrative of the film, the two sharing unfurling conversations on the nature of loss and the human spirit. But Blades did not watch the film and instead worked on instinct to build out a conception of how the score would unfold, shaping its operatic, textural and granular tone. Blades went on to record the score in full, with orchestra and choir, without going back to Rojas for feedback, aware that he was taking a complete risk. The score's pull is reflective of the process of grief itself, how its moods and memories oscillate up and down into the past and lost futures, Blades hitting all those spaces with diverse and stretching notes. The piano holds the memories of Blades and Rojas' grandmothers, who both had out-of-tune pianos sitting in an empty room. The Silogo-De-Oro choir sing throughout, reminiscent of the broken phonetics of grief, the build-up and release of tension and the inability to articulate complete sound or words. The harmony stabilizes and then becomes distant, taking the griever away from the lushness of life and into the realms of loss, death and dream-like realities, as mirrored in Rojas' layered vignettes. As the score closes, the harmonies become richer and fuller, marking a return to life. Understanding the power of sound to both respond to and drive narrative, Blades' score weaves together field recordings, half-remembered conversations, choral movements, string arrangements and electronic fragments into a nuanced and evocative whole.

LAIZ & THE NEW LOVE EXPERIENCE Ela Partiu 2LP
LP version. Brazilian hip-hop, with a golden-era glint and a 20-strong cast is given fresh impetus on Ela Partiu, 24-year-old rapper Laiz's breakout recording on Agogo Records. Glowing with pan-African collaborations, and rooted in Laiz's love and appreciation of magical realism, tropic?lia and Brazilian music old and new -- think Tom Z? and Marcelo D2 -- Ela Partiu features Sudanese trap-rapper Zeyo Mann, Ghanian percussionist and singer Eric Owusu (Jembaa Groove, Pat Thomas) and produced by young.vishnu and Pachakuti, from the up and coming crew, and Laiz's label mates, The New Love Experience. Lyrically ruminating on emigration, the songs are drawn from Laiz's experiences, some complex, since leaving her Sao Paulo home at just 14 years old, going to the States, and relocating to Germany in 2018 as well as those experiences of the international guest musicians, many who are global south artists, emigrants, who call Germany their home. The recording was brought to life in Laiz's relaxed city of Hildesheim in 2023. In Portuguese, "Ela Partiu" is the name of a classic Tim Maia track, the '70s tortured soul-boy from Brazil, one of Laiz's heroes. It also translates to "she has gone" referring to Laiz's early-life decision to leave her family home. There's little doubt Ela Partiu offers new bridges between tropicalia, Brazilian MPB and hip hop, lighting up Brazilian musical traditions in similar ways that Marcelo D2 or Criolo attempted. Its joyful, yet poses serious questions, and with a highly talented group of emigrant musicians from every corner of the globe, it's so much more than a Brazilian record, brought to life by a talent and traveler who thrives on the off-beat path, and is clearly still finding her way.

ROHRER, SAMUEL Music For Lovers LP
Music for Lovers is the new solo outing of multi-instrumentalist Samuel Rohrer (playing a combination of percussion, modular synthesizer and keyboard-based instruments on this recording). The album's title, which has been used for other albums in unrelated musical genres, might be deceiving: those who expect overly sentimental, fluffy pieces full of levity from start to finish, or sarcastic and cynical attempts at rejecting such "easy" listening, will be surprised by the emotional and tonal complexity on display here. In Rohrer's own words, it is dedicated to "those brave lovers, who are ready to not only find, but eventually become truth," and as such is an exploration of an evolving process rather than an idealized state.

SW. mindSET LP
mindSET is the ninth album from enigmatic producer SW., directly following 2024's excursion into his trademark techno, IDM and bleep soundscapes, on the myDEFINITIONS Vol II album. But with his mindSET album, SW. takes a left turn, as pioneers often do, and listeners find themselves on the lesser traveled side roads of electronic music history. Or in SW.'s own words: "the more abstract leftfield elements." It's in these less-defined areas that SW. finds his sweet spot, building dancefloor soundtracks that defied definition. And with mindSET, the sounds and the machines might have changed, the methodology remains the same. "It draws from what was more generally seen in leftfield as a term for the slightly off-kilter house and broken beats that didn't fit neatly into classic genres, whether that was Chicago house, French garage, drum and bass, or broken beat. It's more about those in-between sounds that never really took off, only appearing briefly in the early to mid-'90s and then quickly disappearing. There was a certain magic in that moment, which I wanted to capture. Also, the entire album was produced using classic analog equipment, with old machines that were used during that era. That's the approach I've taken." The eight tracks on mindSET are shaped out of de-tuned techno pop synths and heavy, syncopated drums, grooving along chopped-up polymeters to create an eerie mood, as if orbiting an undiscovered planet for the first time. The harmonic movements are often bent out of shape, sometimes veering towards Gherkin Jerks or Cristian Vogel territory. But in the end, the sounds are less important than the atmosphere, and the tracks represent an attitude or an approach -- to creating the music as well as experiencing it. mindSET is a nod to those dancers sharing an oddball moment, and for those of us on the same wavelength, it's a vibe listeners can all get inside.

TAJ MAHAL TRAVELLERS Live LP
Limited, last copies. "1972 was a busy year for Japan's favorite experimental rock band. After several months spent touring Europe, group leader Takehisa Kosugi (currently music director for the Merce Cunningham dance company in the USA) decided to make good on the band's name and embark on a monumental voyage across Europe and Asia, driving a VW bus from Rotterdam all the way to the Taj Mahal in India. Amazingly, the band got as far as Pakistan before having to fly the rest of the way to the Taj Mahal due to border restrictions. By July of 1972, the band was back home in Japan, and still playing nonstop. The three tracks on side A were recorded live during this historic tour, while side B was recorded a year later at the famous Oz Club in Tokyo, during a five day music festival celebrating the venue's final days." Clear blue vinyl in clear plastic sleeve with black lettering (limited edition 500 copies)."

SURFACE Falling In Love/Happy (Love Mix) 12"
Two seminal 12" mixes of a pair of enormous tracks from Surface. French-only picture sleeve of the eternal "Falling In Love", backed with Be With's deconstructed mix of the swirling electronic soul/synth-driven slow jam "Happy". These sought-after versions have never been paired on the same record before. American post-disco/R&B trio Surface were a New Jersey vocal group made up of Bernard Jackson, David Townsend and David Conley. The majesty of boogie ballad "Falling In Love" was their first single, released in 1983 on Salsoul Records. The mellow magic of this track is loved the world over; it's a feel-good smooth boogie jam that's forever coveted. The slick, crystal clear beat, the legendary mini-Moog bassline, the melody, Karen Copeland's superb vocal, the great flute solo (referenced on the cover) all of it is literally perfect and beautifully encapsulates that mid 80s international club vibe. This here is the original Shep Pettibone mix in its entirety -- it's the only one you really need. Flip for the legendary "Love Mix" of 1987 hit single "Happy". You all know the original. At least, you should know it. But the "Love Mix" is a deconstructed, boldly produced mix which is the one the heads have turned to for so long. This killer remix begins with Jackson's spine-tingling isolated vocal, cleverly subverting expectations by actually delivering the first words of the original's second verse "You must be Heaven sent...Sent into my life...And I complement you baby...Baby" before a heavy 808 drum kicks hard with echoey handclaps. It's super sparse and a dubbed out slow-mo boogie banger like no other. The synth bass, atmospheric synth pads and synthesized flute glide in and out with effortless style and the whole thing is a wonder to behold. It's a slow jam, for sure, but crafted in the straight up funk tradition, using the digital tools of the day and this sparser than sparse version almost sounds like a precursor to UK Street Soul. A unique combination of undeniable funk, electro beats and an earnest, youthful tenor; it should be slamming out of every jeep forevermore.

LANERI, ROBERTO Magister Perotinus Meets The Jedi Masters CD
Roberto Laneri (Prima Materia) further radicalizes his formal research path in the field of harmonic singing, with a highly rigorous compositional practice of scores and rhythmic placement of overtones. At the dawn of Western counterpoint and the birth of polyphony, he imagines as in a dream the famous Magister Perotinus (XII century) in ecstatic contact with higher entities (Jedi Masters) who would introduce him to those secrets of the vocal art, further developed in later centuries. Among the mysteries of subtle acoustic phenomena such as resonance, phasing and interference, the criterion of harmonic convergence (i.e. the convergence of different fundamentals on common overtones) emerges as a powerful compositional tool. The strength of this music lies in the vibrational power of sound, in an expanded archetypal liturgy, where lights and shadows of ancient Gothic cathedrals infinitely amplify the imaginative transformation of the real, as in the vesica piscis-shaped crevice of Noura Tafeche's sensational cover.

EDREN, DAVID Binnenin LP
Probably in another life David Edren (DSR Lines) was a visionary biologist or chemist. In this new sound adventure, he becomes the narrator of anatomical and cellular symphonies, catharsis of invisible biochemical processes, painting the micro-dimensional flows of the subtle body or imaginary geographies of hidden micro-bodies. Here, his organic electronic music is enriched with new lymphs that also vaguely recall the influences of non-European music, especially Chinese and Japanese music (stick and chimes percussions) in an intimate and twilight dimension, poised between exotic ambient and cinematic suggestions. A militaristic description of liquid currents, labyrinthine veins, weaving streams, molecules and particles in multi-orbital dances, muscular chords, drowning bubbles, light waves; all in a confident compositional overview that is absolutely unique and fascinating.

DAGAR BROTHERS Raag Malkauns & Ragini Miyan Ki Todi 3LP
These recordings were made in Bombay in 1968 by Bengt Berger (Bitter Funeral Beer Band) during a stay with Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, who was primarily responsible for the revival of the Rudra Veena as a solo concert instrument. His home in the suburb of Chembur was at the time the magical haunt of a plethora of fantastic musicians, including Ritwik Sanyal and K. Sridhar, who took part in the session. In perfect and stern Duphrad vocal style, these two Raga lead listeners to different atmospheres and perceptions: "Malkauns" is the contemplative state of the evening, of the abandonment of the senses before the breaking of the silence in the night; "Miyan Ki Todi" is the first breath of the morning, the gentle awakening of the limbs before a puja. The two Dagar brothers, Mohiuddin on the Rudra and Fariduddin on the chant, complement each other, become ocean and fire, stillness and storm, in an intimate and tight dialogue of exploration and expressive subtlety, in which the purity of an Indian summer becomes the highest symbol of beauty and freedom of spirit. Originally released on CD by Country & Eastern.

Through the course of time, DSR Lines (David Edren) never loses his intimate and profound connection to the universe of modular synths. Between Kraut-Kosmische accelerations and a personal approach of gentle minimalism, he always forges rare atmospheres of rhythmic pulsation, full of enveloping, spherical and spiraling sounds, luminous and radiant in their hypnotic aura, or magnificently ecstatic and ascending. ELEPHANT TREE & LOWRIDER The Long Forever LP
"In the wake of two landmark 2020 releases, Elephant Tree and Lowrider have seized the opportunity to redefine who they are and declare where their musical voyages will go next with the collaborative album The Long Forever, easily one of the most eagerly awaited split releases in the history of heavy rock. Like two timelines converging, The Long Forever finds both bands at critical junctures: each has a broad and expanding influence, each is revered onstage and off, and each is delivering its first proper new release in four years to tremendous anticipation. Bringing these bands onto a shared collaborative platter would be an event regardless of the surrounding circumstances, but the significance of this album is even greater. The album's title comes from the nickname for the multi-week coma that Elephant Tree singer/guitarist Jack Townley was in for medical reasons after a near-fatal biking accident in early 2023. Dreaming without waking and losing all sense of time as his mind attempted to cope with the ordeal, that lyrical description only hints at the enormity of Jack's experience. The year or so that followed manifested a musical freedom in both bands' respective approaches, Elephant Tree choosing a raw, set-up-the-mics-and-go approach during Jack's gradual return to playing, while Lowrider grew more complex and expressive in building songs to follow up their massively adored 2020 album Refractions. The Long Forever subverts and supersedes expectations, orbiting around a traumatic nexus as the gravitational singularity that bends and shapes every note that escapes forth. Perseverance, healing and stubbornness of passion made The Long Forever a reality, and fans of both Elephant Tree and Lowrider are certain to rejoice at the towering result!"

FAUST The Faust Tapes LP
2024 limited restock; LP version. Reissue, originally released in 1973. There's something perversely fabulous about the thought of this warped masterwork wandering into 60,000 unsuspecting British homes in 1973. Faust's second-and-a-half album hit the shops to celebrate their signing to the nascent Virgin Records, who were looking to take advantage of the zeitgeist for German music at that time. Undeterred by the fact the band's unwillingness to engage with the commercial landscape had seen them dropped from Polydor, Branson and co. cooked up a suitably spectacular marketing strategy, selling the LP for 49p, the bargain price of a single. What was lurking within the grooves was a condensed collage of outtakes, oddities, sketches and samples previously known to the band's nearest and dearest as The Faust Party Tapes -- and how you wish you'd been to those parties. Cacophonous keys and roaring drones splinter into a deranged hybrid of tumbling toms and yelping vocals; committed experimentalism which in no way prepares you for the beautiful ballad which follows. Armed with acoustic guitar, playful piano and panning vocals, Faust fashion a pastoral idyll imbued with the most profound yearning. "Flashback Caruso" brims with Byrds-ian jangle and Syd's psychedelia, its non-sensical English lending the piece a Confucian lyricism perfect for expanded minds. Sliced and spliced between TV snippets, dissonant trumpet and the sound of someone pissing, the utterly freaky fuzz-rock of "J'ai Mal Aux Dents" sounds positively radio-friendly, far less far out than if it were encountered alone. Compared to the non-musical madness beside it, this thrash-jazz trance dance makes perfect sense, as does the corrosive breakbeat of "Two Drums, Bass, Organ", a mutant funk workout which rivals Can in an all-German dance off. The progressive and symphonic "Dr. Schwitters", dissected by fragments of dissonant process music, haunted vocal takes and the proto-industrial grind of "Elerimomuvid", charts a course for the dark side of the moon more suited to the serious cosmonauts of the world. Then the record freefalls into disorienting drum workouts, mixing desk experiments and a wicked premonition of no-wave jazz ("Hermann's Lament") before taking slight respite in the beauty of "Rudolf Der Pianist" and "I've Heard That One Before". The particles of prepared piano, power tools and tape echo continue to cascade through the soundspace, gradually building into the final trilogy of "Stretch Out Time", "Der Baum" and "Ch?re Chambre", which return to conventional song structure, albeit in the group's typically twisted style. Once again though, in comparison to the wonderfully weird pieces which precede them, these three tracks are entirely accessible, and in this lies the brilliance of the album.

GLOK/TIMOTHY CLERKIN Alliance LP
Ride's Andy Bell, recording under his electronic alter ego GLOK, and the producer and Insult to Injury label boss Timothy Clerkin have joined forces for Alliance, a brand new seven-track album released by Bytes. The collaboration finds Andy and Tim with their freak flags flying, working in a freewheeling environment where nothing was off limits, with influences ranging from Death in Vegas and Boards of Canada to James Holden and New Order. They already knew there was chemistry -- Andy and Tim were introduced by Bytes when the label suggested Tim as a participant for the Dissident Remixed album, which was put together in 2019. Tim delivered a killer rework of "Projected Sounds," turning the Neu!-meets- Steve Reich original into a tripped-out, slo-mo acid house wonder; "Voodoo Ray" for the shoegaze generation. They later met in person at the funeral of Andrew Weatherall (whose influence can be heard in every groove of the album) and kept in touch. GRAVES & DON PULLEN, MILFORD The Complete Yale Concert, 1966 CD
2024 restock. For a performance at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in spring of 1966, percussionist Milford Graves invited pianist Don Pullen to play duets. The two musicians had worked together in a band fronted by saxophonist and clarinetist Giusseppi Logan, with whom they had recorded two LPs in 1965 for ESP-Disk'. Graves was already a daunting presence in free music. One step at a time, he was busy transforming the role of drumming in jazz, introducing a new way of dealing with unmetered time and accomplishing this task with technique that was almost inconceivable. His experience playing timbales in Latin bands had been formative, suggesting that the snare could be used as accent rather than beat-keeper, but by the mid '60s he'd worked up a holistic approach to sound and energy that was the most radical of his improvising percussion contemporaries. And with a simpatico accomplice like Pullen, who would go on to have an illustrious career with Charles Mingus, co-fronting a band with George Adams, and as a soloist and bandleader. This early setting finds Pullen is at his most hard-hitting, and his piano concept as heard here lays to rest dubious claims of Cecil Taylorism. Inspired by their performance, Graves and Pullen issued an LP, In Concert at Yale University, Vol. 1 on their own Self-Reliance Program imprint (1966). The vinyl is impossibly rare, especially its first copies, which sported hand-painted covers by the musicians. A second volume titled Nommo (1967) was subsequently issued, and it too is a highly prized platter. None of this music has ever been available digitally. The tapes were lost, so in putting this production together -- in the works for ten years -- virgin copies of the LPs were used. One CD includes the two complete LPs together with original cover designs, a gallery of hand-painted LPs, and a photo of Graves and Pullen selling them at a Nation of Islam convention. An insert modeled after the original one presents an interview with Graves about the production of the records. This is beyond the holy grail of free music. It is as vital and challenging today as it was more than five decades ago. Corbett Vs. Dempsey is honored to have collaborated with Milford Graves on this historic reissue. Personnel: Milford Graves - drums and percussion; Don Pullen - piano.

JAZZMEN WITH JOE MCPHEE, THE Nineteen Sixty-Six CD
Until now, the earliest recordings anyone has heard by Joe McPhee come from the period around his 1968 debut album, Underground Railroad. McPhee had just started playing tenor saxophone at that point. A couple of years earlier, the bassist featured on all of McPhee's early recordings, Tyrone Crabb, led a band of his own, the Jazzmen, in which McPhee was featured on his first instrument: trumpet. Indeed, McPhee was a trumpet legacy -- his father was a trumpeter. In the mid-'60s, Joe was a serious young player with deep knowledge and an expansive ear. Performing around Poughkeepsie and across the Hudson Valley, the Jazzmen were one of the very first ensembles recorded by Craig Johnson, who would go on to form the CjR label expressly to release McPhee's music. The fledgling audio engineer was clearly learning the ropes when he documented this incredible 1966 performance, but despite a few excusable acoustic blemishes, it's a beautiful window into McPhee's trumpet playing, suggesting that, had he stuck to that instrument alone, he might well have been considered a major figure on the horn (of course, he is such a figure on the pocket trumpet); the opening track, a version of "One Mint Julep" as arranged by Freddie Hubbard (on his Blue Note record Open Sesame) shows McPhee's lithe stylings to good effect. McPhee's musical cosmology was much bigger than a single axe, however, as is evident on the sprawling second track, which, over the course of half-an-hour proceeds from an excoriating yowl to a version of Miles Davis's "Milestones" taken at a sweltering tempo. A portent of the free jazz to follow and a marker of McPhee's foundations in hard bop and soul jazz, 1966 features the entire reel-to-reel tape long thought lost, simply labeled: "Joe McPhee, 1966, trumpet." Featuring Joe McPhee (trumpet, recorder), Harry Hall (tenor saxophone, recorder), Reggie Marks (tenor saxophone, recorder), Mike Kull (piano), Tyrone Crabb (bass, bandleader), and Charlie Benjamin (drums).

COURETTES, THE The Soul Of... The Fabulous Courettes LP
"A rock'n'roll sensation from the word go, Danish-Brazilian The Courettes are back with their fourth and best album to date -- The Soul Of? The Fabulous Courettes. And this time, they're bigger, wider and deeper than ever before as they add more to the blistering ramalama that's seen them cause pandemonium across the venues, festivals and airwaves of the UK, Europe, USA and Japan. Hitting the sweet spot that straddles garage rock, girl groups, doo-wop harmonies, heartache and all points in between, here The Courettes build on the momentum of predecessor Back In Mono with a collection of songs that opens up their sonic scope while confronting dark, emotional matter to reveal The Soul Of? The Fabulous Courettes. 'We didn't want to do Back In Mono 2,' stresses drummer Martin Couri. 'We always try to put ourselves into a zone of discomfort, which I think is where exciting things happen rather than just doing the same thing over again,' agrees singer, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Flavia Couri. 'I mean, I know some bands can do that but we don't see ourselves making the same album for the next 20 years. We thought Back In Mono was our best album until this one!' She's not wrong. Having evolved with each album release, The Soul Of? The Fabulous Courettes draws inspiration from many of the duo's numerous idols that have only previously been hinted at. 'We wanted to show our love of the Spector Wall Of Sound and Motown,' reveals Flavia. 'It was a clear mission and we've absolutely nailed it.'"

INDIGNATION MEETING A Model World LP
"Indignation Meeting are punky rail fans from Leeds. 15-year-old Peter is the driver -- he's the drummer and lead singer, writes most of the songs, and also plays bass and trumpet on the album. The rest of the crew is his dad Michael on guitar, Hugo on bass, and with Keith, Heather, and Sally often along for the ride when they play out. DGHQ loved listening to their self-released debut album Trouble In The Shed, and they now have a second album, A Model World."

HOLOGRAM TEEN Day-Glo Chaos CD
Hologram Teen's exuberance is brightly reflected in the mirror ball synthpop of her third album. It is her second long player to appear on vinyl after the release of Between The Funk And The Fear debut on the Polytechnic Youth label. Morgane was the keyboard player in Stereolab between 1995 and 2001 during which time they released Emperor Tomato Ketchup and Dots And Loops. As a teenager though she first played the drums, then guitar and bass. She only learnt the keyboards one month before joining the group. After leaving Stereolab, Morgane first moved to New York for nine years; she'd always planned to move to America having spent a lot of time there with her parents and of course those space-pop pioneers. The warmer weather of LA enticed her though and you can hear its pulse in Day-Glo Chaos. The album's thumping heart is pumped by the city's night sky and when asked she cites three particular albums as her favorites: the oddball analogue electro of Jacno's 1979 debut; John Carpenter's Escape From New York and The B-52's Cosmic Thing. There's also a strong nod to the playful computerized harmonies of Yellow Magic Orchestra whilst she's somewhat partial to the synth prog of Yes and Soft Machine. Throughout her work (but especially on this record) you can hear the influence of computer games. Though not a fan of Hotline Miami or the GTA series she liked Hang On and loved Outrun which she used to play a lot on her Sega Master System. You'll see and hear such influences on the lead single from the album "Midnite Rogue" the video to which pays (im)perfect juddering homage to such arcade culture. The title was inspired by a Fighting Fantasy book which she adored as a kid.

VA The Complete Obscure Records Collection 1975-1978 10CD BOX
Over the last few years, the Italian imprint, Dialogo, has showed a remarkable dedication to the history of experimental music via reissues of seminal artefacts from the Cramps catalog, and important albums by Piero Umiliani, Ennio Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, Enrico Rava, and others. This initiative now takes on a towering scale with the first ever box set gathering the entire ten album collection of Brian Eno's Obscure Records, originally issued between 1975 and 1978. A truly groundbreaking body of recordings - many of which have remained out of print and difficult to find for decades - it contains some of the most important, influential, and enduring music to emerge during the second half of the 20th Century, which collectively reconfigured the terms of minimalism and laid the groundwork for the emerging movement of ambient music over its short, three-year run. Issued in a deluxe CD edition of 1,000 copies, each box set contains all of Obscure's albums, completely remastered by Andrea Marutti and housed in faithful mini-replicas of their original covers and liner notes, as well as a 130-page booklet, this historic collection marks the first time such a seminal series has received a complete repress. This is certainly one of the year's most interesting, essential, and widely anticipated releases, stunningly produced with the complete involvement of all the artists or their estates. When viewed collectively, the Obscure catalog reveals a remarkable, and previously unexplored counterpoint -- bridging the United Kingdom and the American West Coast -- to the dominant threads of minimal and experimental music, centered in New York that had long dominated the public consciousness. This historic collection marks the first time the seminal Obscure catalog has received a complete repress; simply a dream come true. Featuring Gavin Bryars, Christopher Hobbs, John Adams, Brian Eno, David Toop, Max Eastley, Jan Steele, John Cage, Michael Nyman, The Penguin Caf? Orchestra, John White, Tom Phillips, Gavin Bryars, Fred Orton, and Harold Budd.

JULIA, IGNACIO Linger On: The Velvet Underground Book
Restocked, new lower pricing. Ecstatic Peace Library announce Linger On by Velvets-obsessed music journalist Ignacio Juli?. This sumptuous new volume features interviews with Lou Reed, John Cale, Moe Tucker, Doug Yule, Nico, and the most in-depth interviews ever granted by Sterling Morrison, as well as never-before-published photographs by James Hamilton. The author of Linger On is an internationally respected and trusted Velvet Underground chronicler; he is the Barcelona-based rock n' roll editor Ignacio Juli?, who also published books in Spanish and English on American post-punk band Sonic Youth. When members of The Velvet Underground toured in Spain Ruta 66 journalist Ignacio Juli? was usually among their entourage, front row center at curtain call, backstage after the gig, in attendance of afterparties and sometimes discovered in the band's hotel rooms until lobby call. Since 1985, Ignacio Juli? has obsessively followed the band's career, interviewing and wining and dining the members over the years, and publishing countless articles, intimate profiles and books in Spanish and English on The Velvet Underground. He is known among international Velvets fan clubs as one of the most dedicated chroniclers and archivists of studio bootlegs, live concert recordings, writings, and poetry to the extent that even the band's own members refer to his knowledge for fact-checking purposes. 11.7 x 8.27 inches; Portrait; 244 pages + PPC.

ABOU-KHALIL & THE BALANESCU QUARTET, RABIH Arabian Waltz LP
"Arabian Waltz is the pinnacle of Rabih Abou-Khalil's achievement as a composer and arranger. It is a sublime fusion of jazz, Middle Eastern traditional music, and Western classical. In addition to Abou-Khalil on oud (the Arabic lute), Michel Godard on the tuba and the serpent (the tuba's antique kinsman), and Nabil Khaiat on frame drums, the album also features the Balanescu String Quartet instead of the usual trumpet or sax. The presence of the Balanescu might seem to pose a dilemma for the composer: traditional Middle Eastern music uses no harmony but a string quartet is all about harmony. Abou-Khalil achieves a compromise by generally writing the string parts in unison (or in octaves), in effect using the quartet as a single voice, but also letting the quartet split up to play parts in unison with the other instruments or to provide ornamentation. Without surrendering jazziness at all, the presence of the strings makes possible a wondrous atmosphere, almost as if one is listening to the soundtrack of a classy movie set in Beirut or Damascus during the '40s. This feeling is greatest on 'Dreams of a Dying City' with its brooding tuba and cello motifs and grave, repeated rhythms. 'The Pain After' starts with an impressive tuba solo that turns into a long interlude for tuba and string quartet; sad, slow music that sounds like one of Beethoven's late quartets. Then Abou-Khalil finally enters on oud, bringing a sustained note of wistfulness. Fortunately, beside the darker numbers lie the propulsive drama of 'Arabian Waltz' and the bobbing and weaving quirkiness of 'Ornette Never Sleeps.' Abou-Khalil is known for experimenting with the possibilities his guest musicians bring to his style. In this case, the guests have inspired the host to reach a new height and maybe even a new style. This recording suits every fan of world music, jazz, classical, or just good music." --Kurt Keefner

MCDONAS, THOLLEM Infinite-Sum Game CD
Performed live by Thollem McDonas at Sala Perriera, Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa, Palermo, Sicilia, 13 May 2023. Recorded and mixed by Simone Sfamelli. Mastered by Sean Mac Erlaine at Studio Saile, Dublin. Design and artwork by ACVilla. From the liner notes by Thollem McDonas: "My approach to the piano is unique, based on my lifelong relationship with the instrument. It is also universal, born out of the context of everything and everyone who came before and during. I have been influenced by my classical piano training, my pianist parents, growing up in the culturally diverse SF Bay Area, West Coast punk rock, Kuumbwa Jazz Club, The Cabrillo Music Festival, and my life of traveling and living without a homebase. This album expresses the culmination of my life's experiences in dialogue with the universe and my fellow human beings, including all the artists I've worked with over the years. Those collaborations have continuously helped stretch me into new shapes. An 'infinite-sum game' is the opposite of a 'zero-sum game' in that all of the participants benefit from each other, a symbiosis of sorts, biologically, culturally, financially, politically. It's the heightened state of mind of recognizing that our lives are better when others are also doing well and we put in the effort to facilitate this outcome. Since I was a child, the confluence between musics has been at the forefront of my curiosity. As a result, my music is genre-bending, code-switching, omni-idiomatic, and intersectional. Growing up, all of the composers I was studying were telling me to tell my own story. I was hyper-aware that 'Classical Music' was actually a constant revolution, and that this was the same for jazz and rock and roll too. The greatest way to honor the revolutionaries of the past is to respond to the dynamics of one's own time. I never set out to play a certain style of music, or to emulate anyone, but through my own particular explorational approach, sounds inevitably arise that conjure someone else's music, which is wide open for interpretation. Some of these comprovisations have been included on previous solo albums of mine. I see this recording as the ultimate, and final, document of these pieces. Thank you for listening!"

BAKER, DUCK Breakdown Lane: Free Solos & Duos 1976-1998 CD
"Duck Baker should be a national treasure. He should be an international treasure. Should be? In my book he already is. I first came across his work in the 1970s on early Kicking Mule LPs in my local library in the UK, which was his temporary base then, and is his permanent home now. Many years later I was astounded by Spinning Song, his CD of Herbie Nichols compositions. Around the same time, I made contact with him by way of thanks following a review he wrote of my work on Stuff Smith and, later, other historic violinistic books and CDs. Duck's knowledge and learning about the ancestry of so many musical genres is prodigious, whether jazz, avant-garde, improvisation in general, various forms of country music, Irish, blues, ragtime, swing, you name it. He draws on so much to make his own unique playing and composing. And none of it is to go by the troublesome term 'appropriation;' Duck absorbs, pays tribute, and is himself, wherever his fingers might move across his flamenco guitar, including, of course, its wood body. This previously unreleased collection consists of fourteen solos and two duos with Eugene Chadbourne. The performances are drawn mostly from demo sessions or live recordings, and were recorded at various locations between 1976 and 1998. They run the gamut of moods and tempos, from the reflective 'Peace' and brooding 'Like Flies' to burners that rank with Baker's most animated free playing on record, like the title track, 'No Family Planning,' and 'Buffalo Fire.' The only so-to-speak standards are Thelonious Monk's 'Straight, No Chaser' and Billy Strayhorn's 'Take the 'A' Train,' the latter featuring fascinating and humorous interplay between the two guitarists?. Duck's catalogue is now vast, including a recent CD release of Thelonious Monk compositions, which beautifully complements the aforementioned Nichols CD. As well as solo efforts, past records include collaborations with the likes of Chadbourne, Roswell Rudd, John Zorn, and John Butchers or, at the other end of the spectrum, Stefan Grossman, John Renbourn, Leo Kottke, Molly Andrews, and Maggie Boyle. I, for one, never tire of listening to Duck playing in whatever context. He is a master and every recording is a gem." --Anthony Barnett

VALLE, MARCOS Tunel Acustico (Orange Vinyl) LP
Orange color vinyl. Between the release of his first album in 1962 and 2024, Marcos Valle has released twenty-two studio albums traversing definitive bossa nova, classic samba, iconic disco pop, psychedelic rock, nineties dance and orchestral music. With his twenty-third studio album T?nel Acustico, Valle set out to bring it all together. Originally moving over in the mid-sixties on the back of bossa nova's international proliferation, Valle toured with Sergio Mendes and became hugely in demand as a composer and arranger. He spent the years following Vietnam in Rio writing music for TV and film, as well as four cult favorite albums in collaboration with some of Brazil's most groundbreaking musicians including Milton Nascimento, Azymuth, Som Imaginario, and O Terco. T?nel Ac?stico features two songs originally conceived during Valle's time on the West Coast: "Feels So Good," a stirring two-step soul triumph written in 1979 with soul icon Leon Ware, and the sublime AOR disco track "Life Is What It Is," composed around the same time, with percussionist Laudir De Oliveira from the group Chicago. Built around an unfinished demo Marcos found on a shelf in his house 44 years after it was made, the "Feels So Good" demo was restored with the help of producer Daniel Maunick, who also utilized AI stem-separation to remove the placeholder vocal ad-libs. Valle added Portuguese lyrics to sit alongside Ware's vocal hook, as well as extra keyboards and percussion. On T?nel Ac?stico, Valle's core band features two members of the renowned Brazilian jazz-funk group Azymuth: Alex Malheiros on bass and Renato Massa on drums. The rhythm section is completed by percussionist Ian Moreira, with additional contributions from guitarist Paulinho Guitarra and trumpeter Jesse Sadoc. The contemporarily composed music on T?nel Ac?stico features an impressive lineup of guest lyricists, including renowned Brazilian artists: Joyce Moreno, C?u, and Moreno Veloso, as well as Valle's brother Paulo Sergio Valle.

ORCHID SPANGIAFORA Eel Asp Flaps Feet CD
"Fifty years after I first encountered the music of Orchid Spangiafora, it is a pleasure to be listening to new work by this most bonny of modern sound manipulators. Like Flee Pasts Ape Elf (FTR 096LP), which we reissued in expanded form in 2013, Eel Asp Flays Feet (the title of which is an anagram of the earlier set) is an assemblage of immaculate invention. It manages to produce a unique splotch of confusing analog surrealism in an increasingly digital world, and Robert Carey (aka Orchid himself) deigned to provide these notes on creating the music: 'This album is a combination of some new material and ideas and some older stuff that had not found its way into a tangible (non-online) form.' 'Syllabus,' 'Dyad,' and 'Retroscope' were an attempt to return to an older style of electronic music. I put these on bandcamp, but they did not attract much attention. In mid-2021 David Greenberger provided me with the voice recordings he had made for the 'Everybody's Home' project he did with Tyson Rogers. He asked if there was something I could do with them. I put together 'Holding Pattern' and 'In A Fog.' These two pieces might be considered the 'dub version' of 'Everybody's Home.' I put them on bandcamp as 'Nobody's Home.' The rest were originally made up of typical Orchid snippets. When I first took an electronic music course in 1972 one of the things that struck me about tape loops was how readily they produced interesting rhythms. Since then I got more into selecting them for the rhythm, but rather than repeating I tried to convey it in a single shot followed by slightly modified versions. In a number of these pieces I tried returning to actually repeating phrases enough to hear the natural rhythm of each loop. The mechanical sounds combined with vocal loops in, for example, 'Interlude One,' probably were influenced by the collaboration with Seymour Glass on Cous Cous Bizarre. The rapid streams of syllables in the 'Ur Sonata' came from playing around with an audio batch processing program. I used it to cut up regular loops into very short bits and string them together. Then, as with most electronic or 'tape' music, the real work consisted of removing the parts that didn't belong. The title comes from Kurt Schwitters because I felt the piece shared some of the same motivation or aesthetic, although the implementation is not at all alike.' Well, those are the component parts, but to truly grasp the whole, you must hold your brain tight and jump right in. There is just nothing like an Orchid Spangiafora album. Tell your friends." --Byron Coley, 2024

TOO SHORT Blow The Whistle 2LP
"In 1996, Too $hort almost retired with album number ten, but of course, he couldn't stay away from the game. In 1999 he returned with Can't Stay Away and would pick back up his streak and release a new album every year until 2003. He had been living in Atlanta for several years and the ATL influence was growing on him as each album would feature more southern Hip-Hop artists and producers. Too $hort was starting to get crunk and made appearances on Lil Jon and The Eastside Boyz albums as their sound was growing in popularity in the early aughts. Lil Jon jumped on Too $hort's 14th album What's My Favorite Word in 2002 and would produce five songs on the 2003 follow up Married To The Game. $hort was not about to retire but took a three-year hiatus after the release of his 15th album. He returned in 2006 and dropped the hyped-up Lil Jon single 'Blow The Whistle' and followed with his 16th studio album of the same name with Lil Jon and Jazze Pha behind the boards. The album is a mix of crunk, club, classic pimp tales, and some East Oakland hyphy courtesy of Droop-E and Rick Rock. Almost 20 years later 'Blow The Whistle' can get any club or stadium bouncing and Too $hort don't stop rappin. Get On Down is proud to present Blow The Whistle for the first time on vinyl."

WESLEY & THE J.B.'S, FRED Damn Right, I Am Somebody LP + 7"
2024 repress. "In 1974 one of James Brown's most important band-leaders and sidemen -- trombonist Fred Wesley would release not one but two albums as a leader including Damn Right, I Am Somebody. Starting with an evocative cover it was clear to fans that this album wasn't all about a party. Deep messages abound in the songs here, such as the nearly 10-minute workout 'I'm Paying Taxes, But What Am I Buying.' Social messages aside, Fred and his assembled JBs were a party-moving funk machine at heart, as heard on 'If You Don't Get It The First Time, Back Up And Try It Again Paarty' and the laid-back groove of 'Same Beat' (with prototypical sampling of Jesse Jackson exhorting an audience to chant 'I am / Somebody'). Nestled among these raise-your-fist classics is one of the most experimental funk cut ever made: 'Blow Your Head,' known to relatively modern listeners as the backbone of Public Enemy's 'Public Enemy #1' (from 1987). Get On Down pays reverent tribute to this classic by pressing it on 150-gram vinyl, housed in a 1970s style Stoughton jacket in an 8-gauge custom polybag emblazoned with an embossed People Records logo. In addition, the package comes with a 22" x 22" poster featuring the original cover art, as well as a 7-inch flexidisc of the rare 'Unrubbed Version' (without Moog) of Fred Wesley & The JBs' 1973 single 'Blow Your Head.' This version was only available previously on 2000's James Brown's Funky People Part 3 compilation."

FAKHR, ROGER Fine Anyway LP
2024 limited restock; LP version. "Beautiful m?lange of folk, jazz and sound from Lebanon. Recorded in late 1970s Beirut by Rog?r Fakhr who at the time also played guitar for Ziad Rahbani and Fairouz. Rog?r Fakhr is a musician from Lebanon. He recorded these songs in the late 1970s in Beirut (and some during a brief exile in Paris). Some were circulated on hand copied cassettes among friends, others like Had To Come Back Wet were never released. His music effortlessly combines folk with touches of jazz and soul. He wrote, composed and arranged all songs. While working on his own music he also played for Ziad Rahbani, Fairouz and other musicians. When we first heard Roger's music we were blown away! The music was a mixture of folk with touches of other genres. Maybe one could also refer to it as 'singer-songwriter', since all of the songs were Roger's own compositions. Songs of unique beauty both musically as well as lyrically. At the same time they gave me the feeling of them being somehow time and space isolated capsules. Nothing really revealed, where they could've been recorded and without knowing it was Beirut, my first guess maybe would have rather been California, sometime in the 1970s. The immersive effect of his compositions and voice are just incredible. I was stunned and proposed Roger to work on a re-release, which he politely declined, saying he had no interest in this music being reissued."

FERKAT AL ARD Oghneya LP
2024 limited restock; LP version. "An absolutely legendary album from Lebanon by Issam Hajali's group Ferkat Al Ard, Oghneya stands out as one of the great musical gems of the Arab world. A groundbreaking release from 1978 that represents the meeting point of Arab, jazz, folk and Brazilian styles with the talent of Ziad Rahbani, who did the albums arrangements. Filled with a variety of sounds and genres, from Baroque pop to psych-folk to flashes of bossa nova, Tropicalia and MPB, Oghneya is like if Arthur Verocai took a trip to Beirut in the '70s to record an album. In 2015 we heard Ferkat Al Ard's music for the first time, a Lebanese trio compromised of Issam Hajali, Toufic Farroukh and Elia Saba. It is a stunningly unique release that blends traditional Arabic elements, jazz and Brazilian rhythms hand in hand with poetic-yet-politically engaged lyrics. The band was active in the left-wing movement of Lebanon of the time and they communicated their political ideas candidly through their songwriting. As always both vinyl and CD come with an extensive booklet with an interview with Issam as well as unseen photos from the recording sessions."

The opening sequence, recorded on magnetic tape, was cut and transformed into a tape loop, then manipulated analogically and digitally to change its tone and progression. "Oh! Uomo (Diaspora)" consists of two overlapped and manipulated tape loops: the former created from an Armenian folk melody for harmonium solo recorded in the early 20th century, the latter from a modern dance audio cassette, found by chance in a van parking lot in Turin. This piece, deeply inspired by the work of Angela Ricci Lucchi and Yervant Gianikian, is dedicated to them. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi.

NONO (QUARTETTO MAURICE), LUIGI Fragmente: Stille, An Diotima LP
Edition of 300 copies. Gold foil printed sleeve. Includes 12-page booklet and two leporello inserts printed on translucent paper. On the centenary of the birth of Luigi Nono, the Maurice Quartet -- Georgia Privitera (violin), Laura Bertolino (violin), Francesco Vernero (viola), and Aline Privitera (cello) -- reinterprets the composition for string quartet by the Venetian composer: Fragmente: Stille, An Diotima, dedicated to LaSalle Quartet on the occasion of the thirtieth Beethovenfest in Bonn, in 1980. The driving force of inspiration must have been Beethoven, understood as a radical innovator of the conventions of his time. This same definition was attributed to Nono after composing this work, so much so that the critics of the time spoke of the "turning point work." An extreme chamber music work, at the same time private and political, which Nono himself summarized as follows: "I have not changed at all. Even tenderness, the private has its collective, political side. Therefore my String Quartet is not the expression of a new retrospective line in me, but rather my current position of experimentation: I want the great, rebellious affirmation with the minimum means." The edition includes a set of evocative photographs of the Giudecca in Venice -- which follow the aesthetics of the fragment -- realized by Sophie-Anne Herin and a precious musicological contribution by Francesca Scigliuzzo. The Maurice Quartet -- active for more than twenty years in the field of experimentation between contemporary music, electronics and multimedia -- joins the numerous homages that the world of music pays to Nono one hundred years after his birth with a recording work of great philological and interpretative relevance, aimed at capturing the most intimate and feverish side of one of the most significant composers of the last century.

RANTA, MICHAEL Transits Volume 1 2CD
American percussionist and composer Michael Ranta is a legendary figure who has worked with some of the most significant names of 20th century music but despite this and impressive body of work of his own, he has remained an obscure figure. Important Records presents Transits Volume 1 the first in a series of releases by composer/percussionist Sarah Hennies documenting never-before-heard chamber works mostly composed in the 1970s while Ranta was living in Taiwan. Mastered by Tom Eaton at Sounds & Substance. Based overseas since the late '60s, Ranta is known primarily as a percussionist who worked closely with Harry Partch, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Helmut Lachenmann, Toru Takemitsu, and Jean-Claude ?loy but is also an accomplished artist himself with a vast body of work spanning improvisation, electronic music, and composition. The works in the Transits series comprise a dozen works of scored compositions for solo and chamber ensembles almost all of which are completely unknown with no known performances or recordings since their original premieres. Volume 1 includes "Mharuva," a 30-minute marathon tour-deforce for solo marimba, "Seven Pieces for Three Percussionists," and the 40-minute "Continuum II," a stunning display of virtuosity for two bass clarinets, percussion, and electronics. Transits, Volume 1 features performances by Sarah Hennies, NYC clarinetists Madison Greenstone and Katie Porter, and the Bard College Conservatory Percussion Ensemble.

THUNDERS & THE HEARTBREAKERS, JOHNNY L.A.M.F.: The Lost '77 Mixes (Purple Vinyl) LP
"The Heartbreakers' 1977 classic album L.A.M.F.: The lost '77 mixes -- reissued in transparent purple vinyl. 2017 remaster. Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan formed the Heartbreakers in 1975 out of the ashes of the New York Dolls. Firstly, they were together with Richard Hell, and then teamed up with Billy Rath and Walter Lure. Malcolm McLaren, who'd managed the Dolls, invited them join the Sex Pistols, Clash, and Damned in the UK for the infamous 'Anarchy' tour in 1976. Staying in London at the heart of the punk scene for the following year, they signed to Track Records and recorded L.A.M.F. The album was acclaimed as a classic, but was famously flawed with a 'muddy mix' caused by a mastering fault. A properly audible version remained unheard until 1994 when Jungle sifted through the original master-tapes and reconstructed it. It was remastered to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2017, but has only been available in black vinyl since. Johnny had died in 1991, quickly followed by Jerry's death in 1992. Bassist Billy Rath died in 2014 and guitarist and co-front-person Walter Lure died in 2020. Their influence on the punk scene in 1977 has permeated through to today's new rock'n'roll scene, with many artists over the years citing L.A.M.F. as a huge influence. The album regularly appears in lists of the Best Punk Albums, such as in both Mojo and Q, and songs like 'Born to Lose,' 'Chinese Rocks,' and 'One Track Mind' are now acclaimed as punk anthems. This vinyl album comes in a gatefold sleeve with notes by Thunders and New York Dolls biographer Nina Antonia."

EHLERS, EKKEHARD Plays 2LP
Last copies, reduced price. Ekkehard Ehlers's seminal plays series was originally released on three 12"s (Staubgold) and two 7"s (Bottrop-Boy) in very limited runs. The entire series was previously only available as a CD compilation. Keplar finally presents it on double vinyl for the first time, featuring a new artwork. Domestic ethnology: Ekkehard Ehlers plays. "Play" is a word in English with many meanings attached. Each one sends you down a different cognitive pathway. When Ekkehard Ehlers plays, he is very much on his own. Or, at least, alone but at the same time keeping intimate company with the artistic innovators named in his titles. Robert Johnson. John Cassavetes. Albert Ayler. Cornelius Cardew. Hubert Fichte. Is he playing with them, against them, about them, for them, to them? This can never be known. It is certainly a mistake to try to hear the "work" of these originals in the sounds played by Ekkehard. They're not cover versions. They're hardly tributes in the conventional sense. Cassavetes and Fichte are not even musicians, although music played an important part in both their careers. Sure, there are little nods and flashes of recognition -- tiny guitar licks among the minimal beats of "Robert Johnson 2"; rich bowed instruments in "Albert Ayler", recalling the violin, cello and double bass arrangements on Ayler's 1967 Live in Greenwich Village LP; the elongated organ lines of "Cornelius Cardew 1" gesturing towards passages in Paragraph 1 of the British composer's 1971 Marxist monolith, The Great Learning. Ekkehard is not so much playing these figures as allowing himself to be played by them. Playing as an activity also suggests freedom. Maybe the only thing all five named persons have in common is that they were all quiet radicals. In music, literature and cinema, they all stepped, without self-promotion or fanfare, into unmapped territories. Once there they found it necessary to invent new languages in order to survive. Necessity was the mother of their inventiveness. They were also uncomfortable avant-gardists. Lonely types, fighting their corners out on the margins, with little reward, often misunderstood, ridiculed or ignored. All died unfairly young. The deaths of Johnson, Ayler and Cardew have never been satisfactorily explained, and remain shrouded in myths and conspiracy theories. The pioneering expeditions of all five began in that spirit of playful freedom, but inexorably drew them towards the heart of darkness. Ekkehard Ehlers's intuitive electronic portraits are a form of domestic ethnology in themselves. Invoking another of Ekkehard's musical aliases, they are portraits of cultural "autopoiesis" -- creators whose works were strong enough to have their own self-regenerating life force. Featuring Stephan Mathieu, Joseph Suchy, Anka Hirsch. Mastered by Rashad Becker. Cut to vinyl by Lupo, Berlin, 2022. Redesigned by Sandra Kastl, 2022. Photos by Ludger Blanke. Gatefold sleeve; includes download code; edition of 500.

AROVANE Icol Diston 2LP
Last copies, reduced price. Arovane's Icol Diston compilation on vinyl for the first time. Icol Diston, released in 2002 on DIN, comprised the three first EPs released by Uwe Zahn under his Arovane moniker. This expansive reissue sheds a new light on Zahn's first two outings as a producer on the I.O. and Icol Diston EPs on Torsten "T++" Pr?frock's legendary label as well as highlighting his radical inventiveness as a remixer with the two renditions of Pr?frock-produced material offered on AMX. Taken together, these musically complex and emotionally rich electronic compositions form the prologue to an artistic story like none other while also documenting a very specific era in cultural history. The energy running through Berlin and its boundaryless electronic music scene at the end of the 1990s is reflected by and refined through these eleven tracks. The Yamaha QY700 would become his sketchbook that allowed him to experiment with different patterns, creating polymetric figures out of discrete musical elements. Zahn's sessions, recorded live in stereo and straight to DAT, resulted in two very different EPs of original material. His debut I.O. showcases a playful and gentle, albeit dubby and at times moody aesthetic. The four tracks are exercises in sonic worldbuilding, creating vast spaces and filling them with a plethora of intertwining melodies and rhythms. Its successor Icol Diston drew on similar parameters, but painted a very different picture in terms of atmosphere and mood. The AMX EP features two remixes of tracks originally produced by Pr?frock under two different guises. "Au?en vor" had been released under his Dynamo moniker and was reworked by Zahn after having been introduced to his label owner's Studio 440 sampler, sequencer and drum machine. With his remix of "No. 8," released under Pr?frock's tongue-in-cheek pseudonym Various Artists, Zahn followed a more radical approach which led him even deeper into dub territory. Widely different from the original version, it perfectly translated the spirit of this singular masterpiece into another stylistic idiom. The Icol Diston compilation is imbued with a forward-thinking spirit that remains exhilarating until today. It captures the sound of one unique artist, but also electronic music during that time more broadly. This is the sound of opening a new chapter, the willingness to venture into the unknown. Remaster and cut by Kassian Troyer at Dubplates & Mastering. Cover art by Jim K?hnel based on a photograph by Uwe Zahn. Die-cut sleeve; poly-lined inners; includes download code.

BRETSCHNEIDER, FRANK Curve 2LP
Last copies, reduced price. Keplar releases a vinyl reissue of 2001's Curve, the second album released by Frank Bretschneider on Mille Plateaux under his real name. Curve saw him pick up on the underlying concept of 1999's Rand, but gave his explorations of the sonic and stylistic range of electronic music notably more space and time to unfold. Merging compositional minimalism with sonic complexity, the eight tracks display an affinity for the production techniques of dub music, which had already been a major reference point for Bretschneider's work before. Its subtle grooves, especially in the rhythmically charged pieces towards the end of the album, also nod at the dance music-inspired work of contemporaries such as SND or Vladislav Delay. Produced during a prolific time for Bretschneider, who had previously co-run the Rastermusic label and was at that time still active under his Komet moniker, he considers Curve to be a crucial album in his discography. Bretschneider was an important figure in the 1980s Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) scene and released his first solo experiments with electronic music through his own klangFarBe tape label as early as 1985. Throughout the 1990s, he was part of projects such as Produkt and Tol and also released solo albums as Komet on Rastermusic, which he had co-founded in 1995 together with Olaf Bender a.k.a. Byetone. At the turn of the millennium, he gradually started releasing more solo records under his real name. After 1999's Rand, followed Rausch on 12k -- with whose owner Taylor Deupree he would collaborate for 2002's Balance, reissued in 2020 by Keplar -- in the following year and, finally, Curve. Produced after he had moved to Berlin, Bretschneider used a Clavia Nord Modular as his primary sound source and the Logic DAW to modulate and synchronize the sounds, adding only drum loops to some tracks in the second half of the album. Curve is a record that is hard to pigeonhole and thus an archetypical Bretschneider album: marked by a meticulous attention to detail, infinitely playful, and fully dedicated to pushing the envelope of electronic music. It is no wonder that it left a lasting mark on the international scene for adventurous electronic music.

ZUKIE & FRIENDS, TAPPER A Soulful i&i CD
This follow-up album to Tapper Zukie's Bunker Buster set, sees Tapper again rally calling his fellow reggae singers to work up some great songs. This group of tunes lean towards a more soulful sound, yet still holding that reggae feel listeners know and expect from Mr Zukie. The title itself A Soulful i&i suited this set of songs perfectly. The roll call of great singers starts with Prince Alla adding his distinctive feel to the opening track "Children Don't Cry." "Heaven On Earth" features Junior Ross on vocal duties. "Poverty" is richly enhanced by one of Jamaica's greatest vocal bands, Silvertones. Tapper himself follows with the thoughtful "Man-A-Man" and another great reggae trio the Viceroys counter with "Help Me." Dennis Walks guides listeners with "I Wanna Go" and Junior Ross appears again with the timeless "Be On The Right Track." Mr Zukie points the way on "People of Love" and Prince Alla insures listeners that right will always overcome wrong doing with "Good Over Evil." "That Was The Day" is sung so majestically by the Viceroys and leads listeners into the Silvertones' "Magic Touch." Little Roy leads out with "Youth In The Ghetto."

EARTHEN SEA Recollection LP
"Jacob Long's fourth full-length for Kranky began as a notion to reimagine Earthen Sea as a 'piano trio,' inspired by a year-long immersion in the ECM label catalog, but the compositions soon grew more complex. Elements were chopped and resampled, then layered with bass, drums, percussion, and additional keys. The result is a fusion of live band acoustics and downtempo loops, sculpted into nine smoke-and-mirror dubs of fractured jazz, soft-focus noir, and trip-hop dust: Recollection. Like the title implies, Long's playing and production share a mood of pensive movement, shuffling and rippling like uncertain memories at strange hours. From looming fog ('Present Day,' 'Neon Ruins') and shadowy breaks ('Another Space,' 'Cloudy Vagueness') to rosy glows ('Clear Photograph') and smeared reverie ('White Sky'), Recollection deftly wields its palette of gradient color and subdued states of beauty. His is a music of reduction and reflection, kinetic but oblique, attuned to the silhouettes of sound."

BEDOUIN ASCENT Science, Art And Ritual 3LP
Science, Art And Ritual is a story of "process." Growing up in Harrow (a then quiet suburb of London) in the '70s and '80s from the age of about ten, Kingsuk Biswas aka Bedouin Ascent's ears opened up to sound as he scanned the airwaves. The undeniable righteousness of '80s dub via David Rodigan's Roots Rockers shows was the first prominent influence he received, and with punk roots -- and his burgeoning record collection -- became exposed to the breathless post punk experimentation that followed in the early '80s sweeping up free jazz, noise, dub and much more. Throughout though, he maintained his fascination with Indian Classical music which was a mainstay in his parent's house and spoke with the same infinite space as Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures, and King Tubby's Studio dispatches. Science, Art And Ritual was released in 1994 by Rising High Records and was presented as Bedouin Ascent's debut album. Weaved in throughout the album are subconscious references to music that Kingsuk heard in the past that still remained within sight as companions. The opening track "Ancient Ocean III," referencing the extinct ocean Tethis, unapologetically channels Tackhead, Colourbox, Mantronix, and Lee Perry. The style was also deliberately juxtaposed to the prevailing sound in techno at the time, which had locked onto a rigid form of symmetrical kicks and light snare drums. Elsewhere '80s soul and funk are frozen and captured in fragile glass lattices. A duel between kick drums from three generations of Roland drum machines is a central theme in "Transition-R," all in conversation, calling and responding. These were not just machines to Bedouin Ascent, but part of an extended family, with heart and soul. Three decades after seeing the light, Lapsus presents a special 30th anniversary reissue of this left-field techno gem in a repackaged and redesigned edition. All pressed on a deluxe 3LP marbled vinyl and including a limited lithographic insert print of the original album cover. All tracks have been restored and remastered directly from the original DAT tapes, and the album also features previously unreleased tracks such as "In the Clouds" and "Thru Water" -- regularly performed live at that time and produced in the same period as the album sessions in 1993. Science, Art And Ritual may refer to esoteric traditions in Indian philosophy, but equally embodies the collision of the science, the art and the ritual that is at the core of being immersed in a deep musical journey.

"Hotel 10KM was made in spare and forced moments with a Tascam four-track cassette recorder and a laptop in storage units, closets, bedrooms, a church, and a classroom from 2020-2023. BRONSKI BEAT The Age Of Consent: 40th Anniversary Edition 2CD
Synth pop trio Bronski Beat's 1984 debut The Age of Consent is a rarity in musical history -- an album that both defined a generation and challenged the status quo. Its four singles, and particular lead single "Smalltown Boy," have endured with astonishing resonance, offering home to all listeners dreaming of escape from their familiar surroundings and situations. Every track on the album places the listener "in the room:" they are in it, living it, rolling inside each song's thematic meaning. Through the blue-eyed wonder of singer Jimmy Somerville's vocal pirouettes, they too take the punch of hate in "Why?," question the bible with alongside a male voice choir on "It Ain't Necessarily So," and watch the same crappy TV advertising on "Junk." They are part of the trade-off between lust and commerce in "Love and Money" and the heated near climax of "Need A Man Blues." 40 years later and The Age of Consent remains as prescient and vital as ever as it did on its original release; truly transgressive -- defiant, queer, and laden with hooks. To celebrate this important anniversary, London Records revisit the album across a series of expanded formats, uncovering sonic archival gems, new mixes, essays and more. KOSUGI, TAKEHISA Violin Improvisations CD
2024 restock. Originally released in 1989 as Violin Solo. Sept. 3-4, '89. Takehisa Kosugi's improvisations, both with violin and miscellaneous sounding objects, have a sense of emerging from the bottom of a spiritual unconscious. From this place comes a music based more on the feeling of sounds than conscious arrangement. Memory, physical action, tactile perceptions, environmental conditions, and awareness of subconscious microcosmic and macrocosmic extremes inform his work as much as the intention to assemble sounds into music. When listeners connect with his sounds, a direct identification of experience occurs between audience and performer. Personnel: Takehisa Kosugi - electric violin.

She is now ready to unveil her first full-length album. There is Always a Solution flows with two slippery vinyl records and ten immersive tracks. Nine tracks are produced solely by Vel, while one is co-produced by Vel and Anetha. Once again, Mama Told Ya returns with a valuable lesson: no matter the challenge, you will flow a way. The High Priestess of Drums plunges you into a world of vibrant techno and brisk tribal rhythms, while her ambient passages offer a calming retreat and her mental influences are bound to stir your emotions. Rest assured, "there is always a solution." Renowned for her expertise in rhythmic innovation and spatial soundscapes, Vel presents a revitalizing and dynamic release. MTY-011 promises to cleanse and rejuvenate -- let yourself be immersed. With a hint of irony, "The Babe" playfully teases, "Do you love me? Do you love my music?" But Vel's real question is more reflective: you're in deep water. Dive into the sound bath of "Humans in Cafe", close your eyes, and let the drums, the kicks, the bangs, and the buzz wash over you. One "Xanax Introspection" later, Vel is inviting us to explore the full spectrum of frequencies -- a galloping race of deep bass and high treble in this ambient choreography. Don't let the relentless "BPM Anxiety" drown you. Its tortured synth may try to hold you back, but you're free. You're in your "Pop Tribe", and nothing can stop you "DRUM BIG." Darling it's better down where it's wetter: joining Vel for a jam session "under the sea", it's Anetha! Driving percussions are combining with a pulsating psytrance bassline, pure magic: "Ain't We Mermaids", dear? -- Vel, ever the master of the salty beats, slows it down just enough to say, "I Don't Care," as she deconstructs. A few moments later... She's at it again -- just when the BPMs are peaking, she draws us into a state of floating lethargy. That's the absorbing power of "Ambient Core". The current is strong with this one -- prepare for a challenge. "Deep Tracks Don't Sell" will drift you away in a swirl of intertwining undulations and dripping drums. It's time to return to the surface: with a bubbly twist of whimsy, "Oh La La" pops in, full of new-wave energy. Vel gently swims us back to shore. Mastered by In Aeternam Vale.

GREAT UNWASHED, THE Clean Out Of Our Minds LP
"The Clean broke up (for the first time) in 1982. After a break, the Kilgour brothers pursued a new aesthetic and started recording on a four-track at home. Poking fun at their past, they called themselves The Great Unwashed. Clean Out Of Our Minds was made in two months at the beginning of 1983 and released on Flying Nun Records. The Kilgour's glorious pop hooks are still at the heart of everything but supplanted with a laid-back charm and maybe some of the spirit and mystery of '60s psychedelic folk. However, rather than hippie cosplay, the vibe is more akin to fellow New Zealanders The Tall Dwarfs and/or Syd Barrett. Beautifully remastered by Tex Houston. Vibrant 3D sound allows you to hear everything better than ever before. Housed in a Stoughton tip-on sleeve and available on vinyl for the first time in years. Don't miss out this time!"

TORAL, RAFAEL Spectral Evolution LP
2024 repress; LP version. "After a two-decade interlude, Jim O'Rourke's Moikai returns with Spectral Evolution, a major new work by Rafael Toral. Making his name in the mid-1990s with influential guitar drone platters like Sound Mind Sound Body and Wave Field, Toral has never been one to rest on his laurels repeating his past glories. Since 2017, Toral's work has been entering a new phase, often still centered around the arsenal of self-built instruments developed in the Space Program, but with a renewed interest in the long tones and almost static textures of his earlier work; he has also, after more than a decade, returned to the electric guitar. Spectral Evolution is undoubtedly Toral's most sophisticated work to date, bringing together seemingly incompatible threads from his entire career into a powerful new synthesis, both wildly experimental and emotionally affecting. Toral manages the almost miraculous feat of having his self-built electronic instruments (which in the past he had seen as 'inadequate to play any music based on the Western system') play in tune. In an unexpected sidestep away from any of his previous work, the chord changes that underpin many of the episodes on Spectral Evolution are derived from classic jazz harmony, including takes on the archetypal Gershwin 'Rhythm changes' and Ellington-Strayhorn's 'Take the ?A' Train,' albeit slowed to such an extent that each chord becomes a kind of environment in its own right. Threading together twelve distinct episodes into a flowing whole, Spectral Evolution alternates moments of airy instrumental interplay with dense sonic mass, breaking up the pieces based on chord changes with ambient 'Spaces.' At points reduced to almost a whisper, at other moments Toral's electronics wail, squelch, and squeak like David Tudor's live-electronic rainforest. Similarly, his use of the guitar encompasses an enormous dynamic and textural range, from chiming chords to expansive drones, from crystal clarity to fuzzy grit: on the beautiful 'Your Goodbye,' his filtered, distorted soloing recalls Loren Connors in its emotive depth and wandering melodic sensibility. The product of three years of experimentation and recording, and synthesizing the insights of more than thirty years of musical research, Spectral Evolution is the quintessential album of guitar music from Rafael Toral."

YOUR OLD DROOG Movie 2LP
Double LP version. "When Your Old Droog first entered the hip-hop scene a decade ago, he was cloaked in anonymity. The Ukraine-born, Brooklyn bred rap phenomenon was known solely for his sharp, punchy lyrics wrapped in a gruff delivery. He finally came into the light with his eponymous debut release, the catalyst for what has become a prolific career. Since then, Droog has crystallized his place in hip-hop as the erudite rapper who can tackle any beat with precision; a product of the underground, yet designed for the mainstream. With his new project Movie, YOD is in a new era, where his days of being the dark horse in rap are over. He has countless co-signs from some of the greatest to ever touch a mic, and now he's finally geared to join them. 'Movie is everything that's dope about me,' Droog explains. 'Every song, every mood. This is my story.' A layered masterpiece, the album features appearances by Method Man and Denzel Curry, plus production by industry stalwarts like Just Blaze, Harry Fraud, Conductor Williams, and the legendary Madlib."

HARVESTMAN Triptych: Part Three LP
LP version. "Drawn to the megaliths, ruins and ancient sites mapped out along the British and European mainland's geographical and psychic landscapes, the folklore and apocrypha forever resurfacing as portals from a rational world, Triptych is a meditation forged from traces and residues, and a hallucinatory recollection of artists who have tapped into that enduring otherworldliness embedded within us all. It's a dream diary narrating a passage through Summer Isle where Flying Saucer Attack are wafting out of a window, a distant Fairport Convention are being remixed by dub master Adrian Sherwood, celestial scanners Tangerine Dream are trying to drown out Bert Jansch and Hawkwind are playing Steeleye Span covers, all prised out of time yet bound to its singularity. Woven together from home studio recordings that span two decades, and with some notable guest appearances including; The Bug, Douglas Leal of Deafkids, Wayne Adams of Petbrick, Dave French of Yob and Sanford Parker, this final part of the Harvestman Triptych seeks once again for a lost world, with the voice of poet Ezra Pound extolling the virtues of 'gather[ing] from the air a live tradition.' Elsewhere, 'Herne's Oak' provides seismic bass waves that physically halt the track in its steps -- giant footfalls as Herne's antlers themselves are dragged along a corridor. Another curious and mysterious piece of British folklore brought to life by Harvestman. If Triptych is a multi- and extra-sensory experience, it extends to the remarkable glyph-style artwork of Henry Hablak, a map of correspondences from a long-forgotten ancient and advanced civilization. As with Triptych itself, it's an echo from another time, an act of binding, a guide to be endlessly reinterpreted, and a signpost to the sacred that might not indicate where to look, but how. Cover art is by Henry Hablak, who also designed the art for Part One and Part Two."

TRAPANI, CHRISTOPHER Noise Uprising 2CD
"The inspiration for Christopher Trapani's (b. 1980) new song cycle is Michael Denning's book Noise Uprising, which chronicles the explosion of vernacular recording that took place in the late 1920s in port cities around the globe. The historical 78 rpm records of this era are the not-so-silent witnesses of the birth of son, jazz, samba, rembetiko, fado, tango, etc. They reveal a kind of B-side of music history, a people's history of music-making driven by the bustling marketplaces of colonial port cities. Noise Uprising (2024) is a polystylistic atlas that unravels a subterranean, cross-cultural network far away from, and with a wider reach than, traditional concert halls. Using Denning's book as a starting point, Christopher Trapani 'fills in the map' by composing a series of pieces for four guitars and two singers, sometimes including live electronics. In studying these 78s as primary source documents, Trapani transcribes and transforms their musical gestures. These recordings are in turn woven into electronic collages, often alongside his own field recordings, made on site in the cities where the source material originated, imagining alternative histories, fictive encounters and cross-pollinations between styles which in reality may never have intersected: gamelan meets tango, fado meets samba. With Noise Uprising Trapani uncovers hidden connections between geographically distant genres, but in doing so he always strives to create work that ultimately represents something more than a travelogue or a book of postcards. The short works he has composed for this cycle call into question notions of cultural appropriation and authenticity, challenge rather than romanticize notions of the exotic, and draw attention to the dangers of 'overtourism' and the unreflective, superficial consumption of place. The guitar, in all its possible variations, forms a common thread. But also the human voice plays a central role in Noise Uprising. This recording features the voices of Swedish-Ethiopian soprano Sofia Jernberg and Puerto Rican soprano Sophia Burgos."

RICHTER, BEN Rewild CD
"Rewild (2022) is not meant to be heard as a literal replication of some idealized arboreal setting, but rather a gathering of discrete yet interconnected elements functioning together in balance for a long, slow span of time, suggesting multiple layered and interacting timescales. Put more simply, the music isn't meant to sound like a forest, but instead to evoke to a listener the depth, breadth, and interdependence of a wild ecosystem's very being, as well the amount of time such actions take to evolve -- and, perhaps, how fragile and precarious the system actually is. Just as the natural processes of ecology and evolution that inspired Ben Richter (b. 1986) are too slow, spacious, and complex to command most human attention, so, too, does the resulting music exist in a space that might be imperceptible, unless listeners made a concerted effort to listen deeply and hear differently. As in the natural world, that attention is rewarded with the apprehension of something uncanny and marvelous. Ghost ensemble features Margaret Lancaster (flute); Sky Macklay (oboe); Ben Richter (accordion); Chris Nappi (percussion); Lucia Helen Stavros (harp); Martine Thomas (viola); Tyler J. Borden (violoncello); James Ilgenfritz (contrabass); Kyle Motl (contrabass); Carl Bettendorf (conductor)."

ZAMILSKA United Kingdom Of Anxiety LP
LP version. Her tracks have been played and recommended by Iggy Pop, Mary Anne Hobbs, and Nine Inch Nails. Zamilska, one of the most original artists on the European electronic scene, presents a new album, United Kingdom Of Anxiety. Combining the rawness of techno and the trance-like nature of world music, industrial sound and a fine blend of trip-hop, the Polish producer created a dystopian, post-apocalyptic, fascinating vision of a collapsing world. United Kingdom Of Anxiety begins with a sonic assault. The breaks and powerful bass in "Phantom" awaken from hypnotic slumber, numbness caused by the daily hustle, serve as a reminder that to survive in an unfriendly world, concentration, willpower and perseverance are essential. The much-needed balance and coolness are brought by huskie vocals -- that is Ola Myszor -- an incredibly talented young artist who appears in several tracks on the album. Besides huskie, there are other guests on "UKOA": Natalia Przybysz, who, with a robotic voice, delivers a manifesto of indomitable, proud solitude in "Persist" and Lukasz Pach, the charismatic frontman of the grindcore band Hostia. His growling is heard in the intense, uncompromising "No Gods," which was presented by Iggy Pop on his BBC6 Music radio show. All the tracks on the album were mixed by Haldor Grunberg from Satanic Audio, known, among other things, for his collaboration with the band Behemoth. The sonic spectrum is also filled with anonymous voices: echoes of quarrels, media messages, sounds of war clamor, monologues -- looped, accelerated, manic, psychotic, but also a wistful singing coming from the depths, from afar. The metaphysical horror of Lovecraft on one hand, and the sober, no less gloomy diagnosis of George Orwell on the other, constantly correspond here. This entire album is a story about society as a whole and the contemporary, dystopian world, which is inevitably heading towards war. The track "1984" clearly defines the inspiration for the artist's post-apocalyptic vision. A distorted radio signal, alarm siren and gabba/techno beats driving into the head like nails serve as an expression of the fear and anger born in a world of impending totalitarianism. Zamilska's original vision captivates with its scope and aura of strangeness and creates a refreshing tension. It also inspires admiration for the producer's craftsmanship -- Zamilska controls every detail of this symphony of horror and, like a true artist, transforms violent emotions into a work of art.

SKALPEL Recut CD
Music from Skalpel's iconic debut for Ninja Tune, reinterpreted by top Polish producers! Poland's ambassadors of jazz-inspired electronics invited outstanding local producers of downtempo, dance music, hip-hop, and jazz to remix this album. The result is Recut, the best remix album in the history of Polish phonography. A record every bit as worthy as the historic original. It's an extraordinary tale of the past and present of Polish electronic music. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Skalpel's debut album, which was released by the famous British label Ninja Tune in 2004. The Polish duo, Marcin Cichy and Igor Pud?o, gained international acclaim by venturing into the then lesser-known territory of Eastern European jazz, updating it with electronic tools. Pitchfork enthusiastically praised the album: "On these tracks, Skalpel smudge the line between organic and electronic effortlessly, like a landscape artist working with charcoal, creating NoPaper Records deep nuances of light and shadow that give the work its overall depth. Its rhythmic dexterity and melodic sweep are hard to deny." Featuring remixes from Latarnik, Pejza?, Expo 2000, Magiera, Kacper Krupa, Zuchy, Emade, Zura, ETNOBOTANIKA, Steez, En2ak & Rafa? Dutkiewicz, Kixnare, Envee, Daniel Szlajnda, 2K88, and Pstyk.

INTERMODULATION Connections (1970-1974) 4CD BOX
Formed in Cambridge in 1969 by Tim Souster and Roger Smalley, Intermodulation started out as a four-piece group with the addition of Robin Thompson and Andrew Powell (who soon moved on to other Cambridge projects, including a pre-Chris Cutler Henry Cow). Powell was replaced by Peter Britton, and this incarnation of the group remained for the duration of their existence. Having released a box set of works by Gentle Fire, it felt necessary to do the same with Intermodulation and thus complete the other half of this missing chapter in British experimental music. Intermodulation had quite a different line up than Gentle Fire, most notably with Peter's percussion, Robin on bassoon and soprano sax, and the shared use of VCS3's and electric keyboards. Nonetheless both groups covered similar ground, appeared at the same European festivals, travelled together with Stockhausen to Iran, and they were generally concerned with a similar repertoire of experimental scores. Although Intermodulation released no records during their existence (and Gentle Fire only the one LP), both groups did appear side by side on the recording of Stockhausen's Sternklang. This four-CD set aims to cover a wide range of their work. CD one contains the entirety of their 1971 concert at Ely Cathedral (a six-minute excerpt of which appeared on the Not Necessarily English Music compiled by David Toop). CD two focuses on their BBC recordings including excerpts from two Prom performances, one of which is the famous 1970 Prom which had Soft Machine taking the stage in the second half. CD three features material held in the archives of three German radio stations and the fourth disc consists of one work; "World Music" by Tim Souster, the 72-minute opus written for the four players plus tape. In summary, Intermodulation plays five Stockhausen pieces (four of which are realizations of his intuitive text pieces), two Terry Riley pieces and one by Cardew. They also play two compositions by Tim and one by Roger, as well performing two group improvisations. The set comes with a 48-page booklet detailing the groups history. This is a numbered edition of 500.

SHAN Warehouse Vol. 2 12"
The second part in Shan's warehouse series delivers more of the same -- but that's definitely a great thing, if the dish has a great taste. Like it's successful predecessor, the tracks don't re-invent the wheel, but cater to all the nameless spaces and places that made raving in defiant and derelict places fun. There is house that sounds like techno ("Elevate") and vice versa. Seasoned with break beats (89 Swing or the Future Sound of London-esque "Euphony") or breaks for love and even dub sirens, it is almost impossible not to find something to suit the customer's environment. The main focus of attention might be the jack of all trades called "Phantazia." Wouldn't have sounded out of place at the entertainment series of the same name, it melts proto hardcore harmonics with Soul II Soul type of strings and immediate call for "the action."

SHACK H.M.S. Fable CD
One of the most iconic albums to hail from Merseyside. H.M.S. Fable was the third LP released from Shack following 1988's Zilch and 1995's Waterpistol. A collection of majestic storytelling in guitar form, written by two extraordinarily talented brothers, Michael and John Head. Originally released on Laurel Records/London Records in 1999, the band at that time comprised of Michael Head, John Head, Ren Parry, and Iain Templeton. Now released on the band's newly-formed label Shack Songs, H.M.S. Fable encompasses many musical styles, from orchestral guitar pop to psychedelic-tinged folk and even elements of Britpop. The Shack story is one of music's greatest legends. It incorporates hardship, bereavement and chaotic misadventure, but above all it tells the tale of beautiful music triumphing over trouble and tragedy. In the '80s, the two brothers from the notorious Kensington estate in north Liverpool were singer and guitarist with The Pale Fountains, an effervescent pop group which imploded under the weight of two albums in 1986. The Heads returned in '88 as Shack and a debut album Zilch. In 1991, Shack made Waterpistol, an inspirational guitar jewel that would have proved just as influential as any British album in that era had the studio not burned down, taking the master tapes with it. Four more years passed, but by the time it was finally released on Marina it had developed "lost classic" status. The Heads battled on. They toured as their hero Arthur Lee (RIP) of Love's backing band. In '97, they created a new group called The Strands and recorded the delicate, dreamy masterpiece "The Magical World Of The Strands."

In '97, they created a new group called The Strands and recorded the delicate, dreamy masterpiece "The Magical World Of The Strands."

POP, IGGY Acoustics KO (Purple Vinyl) 2LP
"Limited-edition transparent purple vinyl. Iggy Pop practically invented punk rock with The Stooges and is celebrated for his wild and dangerous attitude, whether with The Stooges, David Bowie, or other line-ups. But he's rarely seen SOLO. This Skydog Records double-vinyl album captures Iggy without any band in various environments, mostly acoustic and also electric, but -- just as rock'n'roll as ever! Stripped down versions of 'I Wanna Be Your Dog,' 'Louie Louie,' 'Night Clubbing,' Jonathan Richmond's 'Pablo Picasso' with only four strings left on his guitar, and many other favorites as they've rarely been heard -- and five otherwise unreleased songs! The 2LP set comprises a solo acoustic show from Barcelona, an acoustic studio session, a solo electric gig from Paris, plus more solo tracks from elsewhere. Skydog Records' first Iggy release was in 1976 with the riotous 'last ever Stooges show,' Metallic KO; this is its alternative hidden gem."

BERTOIA, HARRY Mechanization 1 & 2 LP
On this new LP, Harry Bertoia shows why he may have been the first industrial musician. Bertoia often referred to his sound sculptures as a "collaboration with industry" and on this new LP Bertoia is intentionally creating heavy, rhythmic music he described as "mechanized," "mechanical," and "factory like." This first edition is packaged in a full color sleeve with metallic inks. Mastered by Tom Eaton at Sounds & Substance. Recorded in 1971, percussion and repetition emulate the pounding rhythms of machinery on this unique pair of conceptual Bertoia compositions. Bertoia utilizes innovative performance techniques to create new sounds unheard in his ouevre. Even in the busy factory of Bertoia's mind, distant stillness rises up as Bertoia exhibits the massive amount of control he possesses over his many looming sculptures. Mechanization is just one of the many sonic directions Bertoia took while composing and recording between the late 1950s and his death in 1978. He documented all of his ideas and directions in notes accompanying the hundreds of tapes discovered in his barn. This first edition of 500 is printed using metallic inks. Bertoia's recordings are as much a celebration of sustained tones, intervallic relationships, healing vibrations, deep listening and shimmering harmonics as Indian Classical music, singing bowls, The Well Tuned Piano or Benjamin Franklin's glass armonica. Through these rich harmonics and pulsing pure tone, Bertoia was able to more clearly articulate his inner spirit than he could with sculpture alone -- a point he made himself many times in interviews. Bertoia was an obsessive composer and relentless experimenter, often working late into the night and accumulating hundreds of tapes of his best performances; his brother Oreste, too, would explore and record the sculptures' sounds during his annual visits to his brother's home in rural Pennsylvania. Learning by experimentation was common for Bertoia and he mastered the art of tape recording, turning the Sonambient barn into a sound studio with four overhead microphones hanging from the rafters in a square formation. He would experiment with overdubbing by performing along to previous recordings, sometimes backwards, constantly improving his methods while also honing his performance skills. The story of Sonambient barn collection will slowly be told through the release of recordings from the archive as well as installations and performances built from Bertoia's own recordings, lectures and a book.

PUSH Push People 2LP
"Original pioneers of rare groove, PUSH, make a welcome return with an existing and exciting album. Originally released in 2004, in 2024 it's still alive and kicking. Push People is a cross pollination of classic underground rare groove and contemporary feel good funk n' soul in the shape of heartfelt songs and incredible instrumental pieces. PUSH emerged from the underground London club scene in 1987, where they were at the heart of a community that thrived on JB inspired Funk, Blaxploitation soundtracks and raw soul-jazz. Push toured Europe and Japan and were regulars onstage at Gilles Peterson's legendary Dingwalls' Talking Loud & Saying Something sessions. They have worked with the likes of Style Council's Paul Weller and Mick Talbot and have long provided the soulful foundation for the regular European tours of US divas like Candi Staton and Marlena Shaw. The triumvirate of key band members Crispin Taylor (drums), Ernie McKone (bass) and Mark Vandergucht (guitar) also doubled up as the rhythm section for the innovative Galliano -- a conscious and wayward band that sold in excess of 800, 000 albums. PUSH are one of the mainstays of the '80s rare groove and acid jazz scene alongside Brand New Heavies, Young Disciples and Soul II Soul. PUSH is on a mission, bringing a breath of fresh air and a wealth of musical experience into a very popular scene for people that 'Feel the Funk!'"

"Second release on Robert Pollard's new Splendid Research label is a reissue of a 1984 demo cassette by Children's Crusade, post-punk teenage band of Guided By Voices' Doug Gillard. The Cleveland guitarist went on to record for Scat, Homestead and Restless Records with the bands Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, My Dad Is Dead, and Gem, before joining GBV (1996-2004), then Nada Surf (2010-2016), then rejoining GBV (2016-present), as well as playing on albums by Richard Buckner, Neko Case, and others. 1980s Cleveland was a hotbed for indie rock, following in the Northern Ohio footsteps of Pere Ubu, The Dead Boys, The Styrenes, Mirrors, and Devo. Children's Crusade was a fleeting blotch on the wild, mid-'80s Cleveland underground music scene, slowly seeping through like a drop of oil on the uniformly black jeans of that era -- noticeable only after it settles, spreads, and you realize it won't come out in the wash."

EGGMEN WHOOOOOO!, THE Fuzzy Eggs, Please LP
Vinyl limited to 300 copies. White with red streaks. Golden-era of kinked, acid-hued, analogue, harmonic song writing sits at the heart of The Eggmen Whoooooo!'s first, mind-bending, full-length album. Two-decades of meandering musicality fans the embers of cult Welsh legends, El Goodo, glowing beneath Benedict Frye's latest bakeries of sound. Whisking effervescence and color into the flat glass of soda of mundane middle age, the former El Goodo pace-setter has gathered a band of five other, talented souls and asks the jittery cut of sparking psych to lead the charge for the band's debut album, Fuzzy Eggs, Please. Almost a full two decades since El Goodo rose to an elevated position amongst discerning music-lovers as consorts to, support act beneath and studio collaborators with Super Furry Animals, and a full four years since the final act of the departed band (their last, acclaimed studio album, Zombie) a tapestry of distinctly and brilliantly odd songs scrambles from the heart of the Welsh hills. Transplanted into the chest cavity of a new, stage-ready six-headed creature, what awakes is a new beast of valve amp and feedback-fueled splendor. All ten songs, recorded in mountainous seclusion in Carmarthenshire with producer, Thighpaulsandra (Spiritualized, Tim Burgess), have clustered in strange harmony on The Eggmen Whoooooo!'s very first, perfectly imperfect album. Formed in a lightning strike of inspiration by prolific, remote South Wales-based keeper of various musical flames, Benedict E Frye, The Eggmen Whoooooo! finds members of kindred, Welsh musical spirits, El Goodo, Los Blancos, and Trecco Beis, joining hands and overloading studio plug sockets in a display of unchallenged creative hubris. With nobody to please but themselves, the six-piece's indulgence in sounds straddles sun-licked Californian harmonies and the torn-sneakered snottiness of New York punk making for thrilling sonic schizophrenia with only their own record collections occasionally poached.

MAKODE Never Getting Over Me/Professional Help 7"
This record is 20 years in the making. It features two songs by one Makode Linde, legendary visual artist and musician, dear friend of (and frequent cover designer for) Studio Barnhus, the wonderfully weird dance label from Stockholm, the city Makode once called home, before moving to Berlin around the same time work started on these two songs. On "Never Getting Over Me", Makode sings an age-old song of lost love and persistent passion over a zany, sun-soaked riddim, while "Professional Help" is a piece of bossa nova perfection, its protagonist lamenting his old flame's refusal of therapy over a graceful, flute-driven instrumental. Exquisite songwriting and glowing lo-fi charm will have these propel straight to your heart, taking up residency in that sacred place reserved for the sweetest pop songs only.

UNIVERS ZERO Crawling Wind LP
Crawling Wind was released in 1981 on the Japanese Chaos International Series label and features the tracks "Toujours Plus ? l'Est," "Before The Heat," and "Central Belgium In The Dark." This is the first vinyl reissue of this legendary EP. "Toujours Plus ? l'Est," as the title suggests, is heavily influenced by the traditional music of Eastern Europe, particularly Bulgaria. It also pays tribute to the iconic catchphrase of Professor Calculus (Tournesol), the character from the Belgian comic series Tintin. "Before The Heat," played live a few times, is an ambient composition by Andy Kirk, who is part of the EP's lineup alongside Daniel Denis, Guy Segers, Alan Ward, and Dirk Descheemaeker. "Central Belgium in the Dark" is a live improvisation from a period when Univers Z?ro dedicated part of their concerts to complete improvisation. What makes this recording unique is that one of Andy Kirk's effects pedals picked up and emitted the sound of a mysterious radio signal, seemingly coming from "nowhere," especially noticeable at the end of the piece. The title of this improv is a nod to contemporary composer Charles Ives' work "Central Park in the Dark." "Central Belgium" refers to the concert venue where the piece was recorded (Haine-St-Pierre). This EP was named one of the greatest Belgian albums of all time by MOFO magazine in February 2000, a rock magazine from the '80s. The original cover artwork has been beautifully redesigned by Thierry Moreau. Univers Zero represents one of the longest-living bands in Belgium. It was established in 1974. Drummer Daniel Denis had the brilliant idea to gather together a team of professionals sharing the same taste for music. The band has adopted an instrumental progressive style. Over the last couple of decades, the band has also implemented a series of influences from chamber music -- most commonly, chamber music from the 20th century. Even if the line-up changes a lot over the years, the overall sound of UZ remained fairly consistent.

PIERRE, ALAIN Vase de Noces (Wedding Trough) Original Soundtrack LP
The first ever publication of the original soundtrack composed by Alain Pierre for the Belgian cult film Vase de noces, directed by Thierry Zeno in 1974. Limited edition of 400 copies with screen-printed sleeve. Vase de Noces wasn't released in Belgium. The only distribution Thierry's films might have accessed here was the "Swedish distribution," a code for distribution around adult movie theaters. Films by major directors such as Bergman or Polanski were released this way. In memory of Alain Pierre (1948-2024)."Vase de noces was made with very little money. Thierry used 16mm reversal film, utilizing the ends of reels he obtained from friends who worked as TV cameramen. Similarly, I salvaged magnetic tape from my workplace, the ?quipe sound studio. Film professionals looked down on him because he filmed everything on his own, without relying on technicians. The remarks became even more disparaging when they saw the quality of the result. Thierry shot this film gradually, just getting by, progressing intermittently, but he had a precise idea and memory of the framing and sequences. He really did a great job, as if he had the entire edit in mind from the start. The first shot had to be the right one. He showed me the film sequence by sequence when the editing was over. This was how he worked, and that's why it took him so long getting the right splices, the right light, etc. Thierry handled the framing and the lighting himself. His black-and-white work is unique; he operated within constraints, which is how creativity often flourishes. Thierry had a story in mind, and in the end, he achieved exactly what he wanted. The performance of actor Dominique Garny, for instance, and his aptitude -- it helped a lot. They spent hours together in the cold, in the mud. As the shooting progressed, I suggested samples of sounds obtained from my machine. This was what he wanted: bottle sounds. There isn't a single direct sound in the film -- it's all dubbed. I never distinguished music from the rest of the soundtrack. The idea of a 'sound object' never left me, and I've always kept that direction in mind when composing. One day, Thierry stopped by while I was working on a documentary about Saint Augustine, for which I was using a tune by Monteverdi. He told me about a certain sequence from his film, and I had the feeling that this music would work wonderfully with that sequence if I slowed it down to the extreme, to the point that it would be unrecognizable. Very rudimentary special effects. I had manipulated music sung by castrati this way for O Sidarta (FKR 107LP), and he liked it. My suggestion was accepted." -- Alain Pierre

WINTER FAMILY On Beautiful Days CD
On Beautiful Days is Winter Family's fourth album. It tells a lot of stories; that of the musicians themselves and their loved ones, those of their territories, of their life in Jerusalem, Paris, or Lorraine; that of women, "witches," conspiracy myths; that of capitalist and colonialist Europe; that of the blindness and violence of Israeli society and the indoctrination of its population; that of the occupation of Palestine; that of eternal lockdown and a laboratory rat; and maybe yours, too. The duo from Jerusalem and Lotharingia formed by Ruth Rosenthal and Xavier Klaine has been developing for around fifteen years a unique universe, to say the least, alternating synthetic punk sounds and dronic prayers of a society on the edge of the precipice. Nourished by metal and baroque music, multidisciplinary theater and African-American culture, they continue to trace a unique path by defending a radical discourse that is aware of its contradictions. They play across the world in clubs, galleries and churches, music that is minimal, dark, political and abrasive, between magic, chaos and melancholy. Winter Family also create documentary theatre performances produced by major European theaters. Sometimes their daughter Saralei plays with them. Listeners hear layers of pump organs and harmoniums, an old piano, distortions and celestial white noise, sirens -- the sound of marching boots -- breathing during sleep -- stun grenades at checkpoint 56 in Hebron recorded by Xavier, the flows of Saralei's flutes, beats played on an iPhone and Ruth's voice. Listeners dive into all these contemporary stories haunted by history, feeling of a leap into the void, a state of dissociation or a feeling of liberation.

MAZZA VISION Ohm Spectrum CD
Mazza Vision's Ohm Spectrum represents the first album of this new project created by two founding members of Tone Rec and Dat Politics, joined by occasional collaborators. Recorded during the bizarre pandemic summer of 2020, the six slow-burning tracks take drone-rock-noise as rhythm to new hazy territories by stripping down the essence of acoustic/electronic sound into dry husks and organizing them into strangely harmonic and hypnotic structures. A radical collision of instrument manipulations, heady electronics, field recordings, and heartfelt ambient soundscapes forms part of a puzzling, lo-fi dissonant movement that seems to seep out of the concrete walls. All music composed and mixed by Mazza Vision (Pailliot, Collet): electronics, drums, synthesizer, sampler, organ, bass, accordion, guitar, field recordings, contact mic, minidisk. QUAZAR The Seven Stars EP 12"
Quazar are pioneers of the first house- and techno-generation of the early '90s. Formed in Amsterdam by producer Gert van Veen, Quazar debuted in 1990 with the 12" The Seven Stars/Day-glo, which became an underground hit all over the world, from the UK and Germany to The USA, Goa and Australia. It's still considered as one of the ultimate classics of the original rave-scene. The Seven Stars, a wild and exciting musical voyage, full of instrumental crescendos and rushes, is a hard-hitting techno-track that set dance floors on fire with its fierce energy. The raw persuasive power of the A side and the acid tinged "Moon Turns The Tide' is balanced by the gentle, melodic "Day-glo" -- a predecessor of the later minimal style and a favorite of Ricardo Villalobos, that unexpectedly became just as popular as "The Seven Stars."

DELTA RAIN DANCE Music For Autumn LP
Glenn Astro leans into the twilight months of 2024 with a new album from his Delta Rain Dance project. Divining fourth world sensibilities from his restlessly curious studio workflow, Astro weaves a mesmerizing tapestry of sound on Music For Autumn which treads the line between horizontal meditation and head-nodding, backroom-ready groove. Amongst his constellation of myriad aliases, Delta Rain Dance spells out the inspiration Astro takes from fourth world pioneer Jon Hassell. The project first surfaced with a string of tapes, LPs and digital releases around 2018, all carried on a label of the same name to keep Delta Rain Dance enclosed in its own space independent of Astro's many other musical endeavours. "I'm really into the world building aspect in science fiction and fantasy," says Astro. "This is my way of creating worlds and spaces that co-exist next to each other. Sometimes they collide but mostly they exist peacefully next to each other or pursue some form of cultural exchange by collaborating with each other." There's a strong sense of balance and cohesion throughout Music For Autumn, as organic percussion and instrumentation wraps around delicate synthesis and patient drum machine pulses so naturally it's hard to spot the joins. The sound has plenty of room to stretch out, from the mantra-like chimes and rattles of the album opener "Green Light Fade" to the luxury funk of "Mmmh, Nice" (featuring fellow Tartelet alumni Nelson of the East). At times the electronic elements seem to entirely dissolve, not least behind the loping strings and tumbledown percussion of "Second Sleep," while achingly beautiful closer "Plucked" centers on the fluttering movement and expression Astro elicits from his modular setup. True to the project's influences, a consistent ambiguous mood lingers in the air over Music For Autumn somewhere between far-flung mystery and comforting familiarity, reliably calm but equally contemplative. It's an odyssey of serenity with enough nuance to make you really think, perfect for the days getting shorter, leaves crunching underfoot and the last fading rays of warmth from the sun.

SHIFTED PHASES The Cosmic Memoirs Of The Late Great Rupert J. Rosinthrope 3LP
2024 repress. Triple LP version. 180 gram vinyl; silver pantone artwork; includes download card. In early 2023, Tresor Records will reissue the sole output from Shifted Phases entitled The Cosmic Memoirs Of The Late Great Rupert J. Rosinthrope. Initially released in 2002, soon after James Stinson passed away, this LP plays a mysterious and compelling role in the Drexciya journey. While other records of Drexciya and related projects have received numerous reprints and editions, The Cosmic Memoirs... has remained out of print since its release. This rarity leaves it more open to interpretation with its place in the Drexciyan storm series, as it became increasingly hard to find and underexplored. This reissue does not merely close the loop on Tresor's reissue series of the Drexciya catalog but brings Shifted Phases to fresh ears more than other records. Accompanied by newly commissioned artwork from Matthew Angelo Harrison, the reissue also features the tracks "Crossing Of The Sun-Ra Nebula" and "Alien Vessel Distress Call", which were previously only on the original CD release. Track titles "Solar Wind", "White Dwarf", and "Lonely Journey of the Comet Bopp" reveal a focus on cosmic realms, suggesting a link with the Drexciya LP Grava 4 that moves from the underwater to the galactic. As it launches with mechanical blows on a precise orbit, each repetition entrenches the gravitational pull in the galaxy of Shifted Phases. In many places, it sounds like the readout of frequencies harvested from outer space, pockmarked with packet loss from the millions of kilometers distance travelled. The music is hard to contain, intuitively restless in motion through its unfolding universe and achingly resonant. It shapeshifts across affectedly melodic sequences such as in "Lonely Journey...", to the sparse, hard-hitting timbres found in "Alien Vessel Distress Call" and the mangled reverse vocals in "The Freak Show", somewhat reminiscent of another Drexciya side-project, Glass Domain. The mythology of Drexciya is evident in how keenly James Stinson and Gerald Donald created their imaginary worlds. In "Crossing Of The Sun-Ra Nebula", there is an indisputable reference to another Afro-futurist who delved deep into a galaxy of their own making.

MAYFLOWER MADAME Insight LP
Norwegian post punk duo Mayflower Madame return with their third studio album on Up In Her Room. Insight offers an expansive canvas of pulsating post-punk, shimmering shoegaze, and atmospheric psych-noir, masterfully blended with delicate sonic nuances. Mixed and mastered by Maurizio Baggio (known for his work with The Soft Moon, Boy Harsher, and The Vacant Lots), Insight showcases the band refining their sound into a sharper and more expansive sonic landscape than ever before. This album sees them exploring greater depths and heights, delivering a hypnotic journey through the shadows, filled with haunting melodies and dreamy melancholia. At the same time, it remains catchy and dynamic, with moments of vibrant brightness. Insight is dedicated to frontman Trond Fagernes' stillborn daughter and is bookended by two songs -- "Ocean of Bitterness" and "Insight for the Mourning Hours" -- that directly address this profound sorrow. Between these somber pieces, the album delves into a wide range of emotions, from nostalgic reflections on lost loves to feverish depictions of escapism and catharsis. Over the past years, Mayflower Madame have gained a reputation far beyond their hometown of Oslo, Norway. They made their debut with the album Observed in a Dream in 2016, which created a buzz in the indie music press and earned them tours across Europe and North America, while 2020s long-awaited sequel Prepared for a Nightmare firmly established their position as one of the continent's leading purveyors of cinematic shoegaze psychedelia swathed in 1980s post-punk and dark romanticism.

MASONNA maso+onna=masonna LP
Masonna, the brainchild of Yamazaki "Maso" Takushi, holds a revered place within the Japanoise scene alongside peers like Merzbow, Incapacitants, CCCC, Violent Onsen Geisha, and Hijokaidan. The project, named Mademoiselle Anne Sanglante Ou Notre Nymphomanie Aur?ol?, epitomizes the extreme end of the noise spectrum, intertwining cascades of electronic disarray with a distinct psychedelic touch and violent vocalizations. The new limited edition vinyl reissue of maso+onna=masonna, originally released on cassette by the Coquette label in 1989, breathes new life into this landmark recording, which has long been the subject of underground lore for its intense, almost mythical presence in the world of noise music. This reissue, limited to just 199 copies, captures Masonna at one of his most pivotal moments, offering two tracks that span roughly 20 minutes each. This format, with one piece per side, creates a compelling dynamic, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the sprawling auditory landscapes that Masonna weaves. Side A delves into the tumultuous depths of distortion and feedback, showcasing the bracing intensity for which Masonna is famed. Here, Takushi's vocal manipulations become ferocious outbursts of sound, transformed through extreme distortion and delay into frantic bursts of static. The noise is relentless, taking the listener through a labyrinthine journey of high-pitched screeches, electronic burbles, and blues pulsations with disturbing whispers and hallucinating screams. Side B, in stark contrast, starts on a different trajectory. Opening with an incredible clutter of guitar and vocal, before the mayhem dissipates, buried under thick blankets of feedback and electronic distortion. This side is more organized yet still unrestrained, reminiscent of the controlled chaos in Steve Reich's minimalist compositions. The side's progression towards increasingly intricate and textured environments makes it a compelling counterpart to the more immediate assault of Side A. This album is not just an essential listen for seasoned aficionados of Japanoise but also for anyone beginning their journey into the world of extreme sonic art. Historically, maso+onna=masonna holds a monumental status, not just within Masonna's amazing catalogue but also within the broader genre of noise music. This vinyl reissue honors that legacy, offering a carefully remastered version that maintains the raw energy and emotional breadth of the original recordings. This limited-edition vinyl is a rare opportunity to experience Masonna's groundbreaking work in its full, remastered glory, and it is a must-have for any serious collector or enthusiast of noise music.

EVANS, PETER Extra LP
LP version. Peter Evans makes his We Jazz Records debut with Extra. The band formation includes Evans on trumpet, Petter Eldh (Koma Saxo/Post Koma) on bass and Jim Black on drums. Peter Evans, an acclaimed trumpet player, improvisor, and composer based in New York City presents a gutsy new band that gets right to work with his eight new compositions. Extra was recorded at the iconic Namouche Studio in Lisbon and it has a feeling of a session where all musicians are pushing for the new together with great excitement. Both Eldh and Black are long-time collaborators of Evans, and every ounce of Extra brims with musical joy of togetherness and new discovery. Comprised of eight Evans originals, the album is a firecracker set off from the first beats of album opener "Freaks". While Peter Evans is often lauded for his remarkable technical prowess, he is first and foremost serving his broader musical vision at all times. That is, the remarkable musical ability of the trio doesn't outshine how together the unit is in realizing the music at hand. The strong rhythmic base of Eldh and Black allows for Evans to push his compositions to their limits and for the band to find new avenues of expression together while doing so. Tracks like "Freaks", "In See" and "Boom" are full on forward-looking fire music with more heat than a sunny day in Lisbon, while "Movement 56" and "The Lighthouse" flip the script in ways that stun and surprise like an alleyway you only discovered after taking a couple of left turns far away from the high street. This is effortless creative music by a band that's comfortable together while pushing each other forward at all times.
