The artwork conveys this, with a low-angle shot of the band, looking up towards an amber sky. This record marked the realization of their signature sound. Nowhere is it clearer than on the album opener, 'Blue Thunder,' the closest a song can come to waves crashing on a beach in song form. Lyrically inconsequential, with a chorus composed entirely of 'las', the track's power lies in a systematic build and break of intensity that reaches a Spector-like climax. It is the quintessential Galaxie 500 song, encapsulating all that was great about the band. For the first time since its original pressing, On Fire is available again on vinyl. He has worked in the past with artists such as Roy Hargrove, Pharoah Sanders, Tony Allen, Kenny Garrett, Jacob Desvarieux, Glen Ballard, Harold Faustin, Michel Martell, etc. He hosted Quincy Jones' 85th birthday celebration at Montreux Festival. On his new album, Spiritual Healing: Bwa Kayiman Freedom Suite, Jowee performs his ancestors' revolution in his own way. Jowee brought together all his inner tubes, soprano, alto, tenor, wood, clarinets, piccolo ?ute, cornet, that blows, that winds, that rumbles. This record is an incantation, a therapy, it cleanses the world by drawing on the fantasized memory of the Haitian revolution. There are Freedom Suites by Sonny Rollins, Max Roach and others. Prayer music, music to break the chains in your head and on your wrists, music of black power and white magic. For Jowee, a kid from Montreal, son of a Haitian pastor, who sang Jesus in all the tones, and then Michael Jackson, and then 2Pac, who learned jazz from Ornette Coleman, the ceremony necessarily has the taste of free. This record is a healing hour-long improvisation.

Ten blistering performances from Tokyo's legendary High Rise. Recorded live in 1992, Disturbance Trip (BE 016LP) is a previously unreleased, distortion-saturated gem recorded in the same era as their third studio album, Dispersion. Guitarist Munehiro Narita's unmatched ability to channel the pure energy/spirit of rock and roll and hard psychedelia is on full display; his riffs are heavy and propulsive, his solos dizzying and transcendent. Nanjo's fuzz bass lays down hypermobile lines that swing and thunder as he intones lyrics that echo in the distance. Disturbance Trip is the first release on the resurrected La Musica Records, Asahito Nanjo's mystifying, apocryphal cassette label started in the 1990s and documenting the most obscure reaches of the Japanese psychedelic underground. 2024 repress. Black Truffle presents a previously unheard performance by rudra veena master Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, recorded in the North Indian city of Vrindavan at the Druhpad Samaroh festival in 1982. The great exponents of the tradition from whom Z.M. Dagar descended were all singers, and dhrupad is essentially vocal music. However, as Z.M. Dagar explained, the veena family of instruments plays an important role in the education and practice of dhrupad singers, especially as an aid to mastering the fine microtonal nuances of pitch essential to the genre. In the great Dagar family tradition, his approach to the various ragas that make up the dhrupad repertoire was stately, slow, and considered, with a great emphasis on the alap, the heavily improvised exposition section. True to form, in this recording of Dagar performing the night raga Yaman Kalyan, the alap section stretches out to more than forty minutes of slow-motion bliss, a frozen tanpura drone hovering above Dagar's gracefully bent notes and elegantly twisting phrases. In the alap's first half, Dagar's figures are so intently focused on the lower reaches of the rudra veena's range that they register more as shudders and moans than melodic patterns. As the performance continues, he slowly climbs in pitch, though continuing with the same intent focus on the articulation of single notes and subtle microtonal variations. This leads to the jod section of the performance, which, though still accompanied only by the tanpura, gradually takes on a more rhythmic character. Developing almost imperceptibly over the course of nearly thirty minutes, the jod moves from the stillness of the opening alap to a rapid pulse that announces the closing section of the piece, where Dagar is joined by Shrikant Mishra on the pakhawaj (a double headed hand drum). Where many performers use the final section of the raga as an exercise in unrestrained virtuosity, Dagar and Mishra subtly weave a web of finely shifting accents and hypnotic melodic variations, bringing the recording to a fitting conclusion while remaining within the meditative space occupied by the performance as a whole. Adorned with beautiful archival photographs of Dagar taken by Swedish percussion legend Bengt Berger and accompanied by detailed notes from Bradford Bailey, Vrindavan 1982 is a stunning document of music unmatched in its patient focus and mysterious emotional depth.

Delving into the deepest recesses of ra?, this compilation serves as a tribute to its roaring years, but also as a rejuvenation of the genre in its sulphureous, subterranean version. It seemed like a good idea to dig into nearly untraceable cassettes, thus confirming it's in the oldest of Oranese pots that the very best of ra? is to be found. Just 50 years ago, no one would have believed even a bit in a genre seemingly bound to forever turn round and round in its native Oran, laying low in one of its many coastal road clubs. In these underground venues, singers -- backed up by a minimalist orchestration for lack of space -- would move their audience to laughs and tears, sobbing in a beer or chuckling down (dry) whisky. Through the pre- and post-independence years, from 1950 to 1970, ra? urbanized itself, with a generation growing up between asphalt and concrete to the sound of traditional flute, but also and mostly listening to twist, French vari?t? and rock music. Their names were Bouta?ba S'ghir, Messaoud Bellemou, Groupe El Azhar, Youn?s Benfissa, or Zergui, and they passed on their collection of songs to the incoming "Chebs" -- breathing a second youth into them. Oran, the capital of West-Algeria, will be at the heart of this rejuvenation. Overshadowed to the West by the bare mountain of A?dour, a foot set onto a beautiful bay and the other on a long dried out wadi, covered up with buildings since, Oran must be the most European of Algerian towns -- regardless of its kasbah, its sanctuary built in 1793 under the reign of the Bey Mohammed ben Othman and devoted to Sidi El Houari, the city's patron saint, and praised in many a ra? song, and its Pacha 18th century mosque built in memory of the displaced Spaniards of 1492. Oran is blessed with the sea and pine forests all around and above it, towards Sana Cruz. It is rich with Hispanic, Andalusian, Turkish, Arab-Berber and French influences. A cosmopolitanism is very much part of the city's largely jovial nature. Some head for the open-air theater, renamed Cheb Hasni in honor of the creator of love ra?, killed on September the 29th, 1994. Others take over restaurants before taking it all out on the dancefloor of one of the many clubs dotted along the coastal road. UK-based noise rock outfit Schande presents their debut LP Once Around, via The Daydream Library Series, the house record label of Ecstatic Peace Library operated by Thurston and Eva Moore. The band, fronted by Thurston Moore Guitar Ensemble member Jen Chochinov, has shared a trio of singles showcasing the band's melodically angular approach to songwriting -- searing and calm in equal measures, reminiscent yet distinctive. Inspired by the works of writers such as Hannah Arendt and Adriana Cavarero, Once Around focuses on notions of personal existence and subjectivity. Mirrored by the band's collaborative musical process, the album aims to explore the ways in which even the most personal journeys depend on others, something the band of expats -- Chochinov is from the US, drummer Ryan Grieve hails from Canada, and bassist Gio Villaraut is from Italy -- navigate daily as they establish and reinvent themselves in their adoptive home of the UK. Schande's current sound was shaped by Chochinov's stint playing in the Thurston Moore Guitar Ensemble. On the heels of playing with the group, Chochinov started experimenting with alternative tunings, including those she learned from Thurston himself. The freedom offered by new tunings gave the band a chance to approach songs and song writing in a new way. The California-born Chochinov has been crafting catchy, propulsive rock in DIY circles since the early 1990s. Solo and full band adventures throughout the years have included a split 7" with The Cribs and James Murphy's pre-LCD Soundsystem group Speedking, playing the legendary Indie Tracks festival (UK), and playing Happy Happy Birthday to Me's Athens Pop Festival (US). Since relocating to London in 2013, she has continued playing shows throughout the UK and US both solo and with her full band. In 2018 and 2019, she was a touring member of Thurston Moore's Guitar Ensemble and played shows throughout the UK and Europe alongside James Sedwards, Deb Googe, Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), Jem Doulton (Thurston Moore Group, The Oscillation), and Jonathan Leideker (Wobbly).

LP version. The Daydream Library Series record label has confirmed Thurston Moore's new full-length album Flow Critical Lucidity, his ninth solo recording. Some of the songs were written and arranged in Europe and The United Kingdom and include lyrical references to their environments and inspired by nature, lucid dreaming, modern dance and Isadora Duncan. The album was arranged at La Becque in Switzerland and recorded at Total Refreshment Studios in London in 2022, and mixed at Hermitage Studios in London with Margo Broom in 2023. Flow Critical Lucidity comes from a lyric in the single "Sans Limites" and the album sleeve cover art features Jamie Nares' "Samurai Walkman" -- a helmet befitted with tuning forks. Jamie Nares (born in Great Britain) is a life-long friend of Thurston Moore from his New York No Wave days and the two have often collaborated in art and music. In 2023, Thurston released two singles: the energetic Isadora Duncan inspired "Isadora" with a music video starring Sky Ferreira. "Hypnogram," which press called "one of the most intensely cerebral cuts Moore has ever released, [in which] he blends the more melodic moments of his former band with the layered, heady flourishes of his bassist Deb Googe's main band, My Bloody Valentine. Emphatically conveying the feeling of dreams, the new material has fans excited for what the American has in store with his next album." In April of 2024, Thurston shared the stirring Earth Day anthem "Rewilding." The musician delivered chilling lines as he ruminated on the removal of the human hand from nature. Moore sang about renewal, and a period for friends of the Earth to sleep and realize a natural way by "coralmorphologically dreaming." The musician said the U.K.'s rewilding movement aspires to reduce human influence on ecosystems. "Like a bolt echoing back from the blue, We Have Dozens of Titles restrikes the iron of Gastr del Sol, plunging the listener back into the maelstrom of their all-too-brief passage of 1993-1998 via an assembly of previously uncollected studio recordings and beautifully captured unreleased live material. Gastr del Sol's music was of the transformative variety?--?or was it transfiguration they were up to? Or transmigration? Flux was key, to be sure. David Grubbs formed Gastr from the final lineup of Bastro; on Gastr del Sol's debut, The Serpentine Similar, Grubbs, Bundy K. Brown and John McEntire downshifted from a thrashing electric outfit into a droning, acoustic-based one. Following this, the lineup shifted again, decisively?--?Brown and McEntire departed to focus on the project to be known as Tortoise, and Jim O'Rourke arrived, pairing with Grubbs to make a sequence of unpredictable leaps across genre and practical approach alike, over three LPs and a pair of EPs. We Have Dozens of Titles contains nearly an hour of previously unreleased live recordings, alongside another near-hour of studio recordings culled from previously uncollected singles, EPs, and compilations. As much as Gastr del Sol's albums showcase a group eminently at home in the studio, they were inclined to thoroughly reinvent their compositions in performance. While reviewing live tapes for this compilation, the studio versions of most things felt more and more definitive, with the exception of the live takes included here, which essay startling new qualities in pieces that have been in the public ear for several decades. The majority of these live performances come from a miraculous find in the CBC archive?--?a broadcast-quality recording of Jim and David from the 1997 Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville. The extended company of players on these numbers includes Jeb Bishop, Bundy K. Montreal five-piece Puffer is the midpoint between hardcore and dirty ol' rock'n'roll -- part Poison Idea going dumpster-diving outside the garages of Melbourne's punk scene, part Fucked Up playing their X records on a rotary sander. They're equally at home with a pacy blur of riffs as they are going for a four-to-the-floor stomp; either way, the ragged larynx sits perfectly astride the roar, while the guitars go full Bob Stinson at his too-drunk-to-fuck-up best. You can practically hear the leather jackets creaking between phrases. This is music to move to. So what better place to start with this band than an LP compiling their must-have demo from 2022 and the remarkably excellent self-titled EP that followed in 2023? Originally released by New York's increasingly-essential label Roachleg Records, these two highly digestible bursts of punk'n'roll complement each other perfectly. Whether you get your giddy thrills from the raw-as-hell likes of opener "Suffering," or from the non-more-anthemic, holy-shit-I-need-to-bang-my-skull-against-the-wall double whammy of "Sister Marie" and "Hard Way To Go," you are guaranteed to find something to love here. You could always try hitting yourself with that plank, but you'll probably find you return to this more often. Drunken Sailor delivers the goods again.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Ferris toured his home state of Mississippi, documenting the voices of African Americans as they spoke about and performed the diverse musical traditions that form the roots of the blues. This LP features blues and gospel field recordings made by Ferris between 1966 and 1974; all tracks are available on vinyl for the very first time. In addition to being a groundbreaking documentarian of the American South, Ferris is Joel R. Williamson Eminent Professor of History and senior associate director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. One of the leading exponents of the burgeoning experimental music scene in Nairobi and beyond, he was listed by Resident Advisor as one of "15 East African Artists You Need To Hear" in 2018 and is a regular performer at the fabled Nyege Nyege Festival having also presented live performances at CTM festival and Gamma Festival. Peel is KMRU's first release for Editions Mego. An exquisite mix of field recordings and electronics unravelling at a repetitive and leisurely pace to expose a rich tapestry of sound, revered for its ability to cross borders with the sheer undertow of emotional content. The subtle calming atmosphere within Peel belies the compositional prowess as layers of delicate sounds wrap around each other creating a hybrid new form ambient music both captivating through its textural depth and kaleidoscopic patterns. The track titles lend themselves to the themes and mood set within: "Why Are You Here", "Well", "Solace", "Klang", "Insubstantial", and the title track. Between the release of his first album in 1962 and 2024, Marcos Valle has released twenty-two studio albums traversing definitive bossa nova, classic samba, iconic disco pop, psychedelic rock, nineties dance and orchestral music. With his twenty-third studio album T?nel Acustico, Valle set out to bring it all together. Originally moving over in the mid-sixties on the back of bossa nova's international proliferation, Valle toured with Sergio Mendes and became hugely in demand as a composer and arranger. He spent the years following Vietnam in Rio writing music for TV and film, as well as four cult favorite albums in collaboration with some of Brazil's most groundbreaking musicians including Milton Nascimento, Azymuth, Som Imaginario, and O Terco. T?nel Ac?stico features two songs originally conceived during Valle's time on the West Coast: "Feels So Good," a stirring two-step soul triumph written in 1979 with soul icon Leon Ware, and the sublime AOR disco track "Life Is What It Is," composed around the same time, with percussionist Laudir De Oliveira from the group Chicago. Built around an unfinished demo Marcos found on a shelf in his house 44 years after it was made, the "Feels So Good" demo was restored with the help of producer Daniel Maunick, who also utilized AI stem-separation to remove the placeholder vocal ad-libs. Valle added Portuguese lyrics to sit alongside Ware's vocal hook, as well as extra keyboards and percussion. On T?nel Ac?stico, Valle's core band features two members of the renowned Brazilian jazz-funk group Azymuth: Alex Malheiros on bass and Renato Massa on drums. The rhythm section is completed by percussionist Ian Moreira, with additional contributions from guitarist Paulinho Guitarra and trumpeter Jesse Sadoc. Originally moving over in the mid-sixties on the back of bossa nova's international proliferation, Valle toured with Sergio Mendes and became hugely in demand as a composer and arranger. He spent the years following Vietnam in Rio writing music for TV and film, as well as four cult favorite albums in collaboration with some of Brazil's most groundbreaking musicians including Milton Nascimento, Azymuth, Som Imaginario, and O Terco. T?nel Ac?stico features two songs originally conceived during Valle's time on the West Coast: "Feels So Good," a stirring two-step soul triumph written in 1979 with soul icon Leon Ware, and the sublime AOR disco track "Life Is What It Is," composed around the same time, with percussionist Laudir De Oliveira from the group Chicago. Built around an unfinished demo Marcos found on a shelf in his house 44 years after it was made, the "Feels So Good" demo was restored with the help of producer Daniel Maunick, who also utilized AI stem-separation to remove the placeholder vocal ad-libs. Valle added Portuguese lyrics to sit alongside Ware's vocal hook, as well as extra keyboards and percussion. On T?nel Ac?stico, Valle's core band features two members of the renowned Brazilian jazz-funk group Azymuth: Alex Malheiros on bass and Renato Massa on drums. The rhythm section is completed by percussionist Ian Moreira, with additional contributions from guitarist Paulinho Guitarra and trumpeter Jesse Sadoc. The contemporarily composed music on T?nel Ac?stico features an impressive lineup of guest lyricists, including renowned Brazilian artists: Joyce Moreno, C?u, and Moreno Veloso, as well as Valle's brother Paulo Sergio Valle.

"Limitation Is Necessary is the third set of music by Massachusetts-based string genius Lloyd Thayer we've had the honor of releasing. This follows the Duets LP (FTR 406LP) (with percussionist Jerome Duepree) on which Lloyd split his playing between a Weissenborn lap guitar and a 22-string Chaturangui, and the Twenty20 CD (FTR 698CD) which was all done on a double-necked Weissenborn. Both of these album deep and monumental explorations of mesmeric string textures filled with elements that ranged from Indian classical to blues to psychedelic with hypnotic grace. The blend of elements so extraordinary and seamless, his slidework is almost incomparable. When I asked him about the germination and evolution of the new album, he wrote eloquently about its creation. 'The first piece I wrote for the album was the title track, which came out of improvising, day after day after month. I could feel the music pulling towards the last recording Twenty20, but I didn't want to do another 38-minute piece, hence Limitation is Necessary.' Once upon a time, long ago, when I did my first instrumental Dobro recording, I sent a copy to my teacher, the late Stacy Phillips. He gave me some very positive feedback, and then said 'can you play all of this stuff live?' My answer was yes, and for whatever reason that became a foundational part of what I do, recording pieces that I can duplicate live. Of course, some of that happens with effects pedals. One of the influences for me is Indian Dhrupad music, specifically the Rudra Veena, which some call the great grandfather of all stringed instruments. Dhrupad itself is an older and slower river than some of the music westerners are used to hearing, which is faster and flashier (Ravi Shankar, Nikhil Banerjee, Zakir Hussain), and of course all of these forms use some type of a DRONE. For a while now, I have been working on the question: what would be the western drone? Leaf blower, highway traffic noise, Walmart parking lot? etc. Most of the pieces on Limitation have a drone in the background, which comes from a sustain pedal or looping pedal. Sometimes it runs throughout the whole piece and sometimes it comes and goes. The two 12 string pieces ('Rumination' and 'Celebration') were influenced by Ralph Towner, who has sometimes used an 'odd' tuning for his 12 string, in which some of the string pairs/courses are tuned to different notes (unlike a 'normal' 12 string where they are tuned to the same note). I spent a lot of time working on this, trying to develop a very specific light touch, so that I could pick individual strings on the 12 string. The doubleneck Weissenborn is used on 'Deviation.' This track moves between three different Turkish Makamlar -- each with a different sort of feeling or mood -- which go back and forth between the two necks. The theory behind this is a little too 'thick' or turgid for human consumption. So there are three instruments used: 12 string (two songs); doubleneck (one song), standard Weissenborg (two songs). Thats it!' Limitation is, indeed, 'it.' I have difficulty imagining anyone who digs contemporary acoustic string music not falling hard for this album's breadth and quality. Originally released on the now-classic Chain Reaction label in 1997, this collection of early singles by Robert Henke and Gerhard Behles has gone on to become a vital listening experience in its own right -- a genre classic alongside the other groundbreaking works from the likes of Porter Ricks and Vladislav Delay. The tracks which make up Hongkong were made while Henke and Behles studied computer science and immersed themselves in Berlin's techno scene. Their early forays into computer-based music production were enabled by the use of the Max/MSP programming environment, forming a backdrop to the landmark work they would undertake in developing the Ableton Live DAW. Henke and Behles traveled to Hong Kong in 1996 to attend the annual International Computer Music Conference, and while there recorded extensive field recordings. These recordings became the glue that pieced together their collaborative tracks into a fluid listening experience for a CD-compilation at Chain Reaction's request. While absolutely rooted in the embryonic sound of European dub techno, Monolake's early work possesses a back room, headphone-ready demeanor which lends itself to the album listening experience. In the cascade of rhythms created by precision engineered delays and subliminal, expansive spatial world building occurring throughout Hongkong, the stage is set for a full and thorough immersion. Before the Monolake sound progressed into a more pointillist form of computer music as Henke's solo project, Hongkong presented a gritty, grainy sonic still tied in some way to the traditional methods of techno production, even as the artists' ideas were sending the sequencing and arranging in exciting new directions. Remastered and presented for the first time as a complete double 12" package, this is the definitive edition of an essential work in the evolution of experimental techno. As Henke himself explains, "twenty-five years later, this record still holds immense value to me in many ways."

Miasmah Recordings presents the posthumous release of this double album of the final work by experimental composer Marcus Fjellstr?m, titled The Last Sunset of the Year. Collected by Marcus' friends and colleagues Erik K. Skodvin and Dave Kajganich, this release brings together music written and produced during Marcus' tenure as composer for the first season of the AMC anthology series The Terror, which told the story of the doomed 1845 Franklin Expedition to find the Northwest Passage. That said, The Last Sunset of the Year is, by design, not a soundtrack to the show. Dave Kajganich writes in the album's liner notes: "The selected pieces have a unity unto themselves, and we feel strongly that this release should be taken not as a companion to the show, but as Marcus Fjellstr?m's final album, on its own terms. We've presented these pieces without titles, except for titling the four movements of the journey they suggest. It is a journey that evokes the mystery, grandeur, and desolation of the Arctic, and articulates the spiritual and existential implications of traveling there." Kajganich reached out to begin discussing the idea of this release with Skodvin, back in 2017, after Marcus' death, but before the series had premiered. In the years since, Dave and Erik have Zoomed and emailed back and forth hundreds of times, studying all seventy-five of the pieces Marcus wrote for the show in all their forms (as many as six or seven versions to a piece), to winnow down a final list of pieces to include. The most difficult phase of the process, Kajganich reveals in the notes, was understanding the best way to sequence the tracks. It required listening to many different track orders and paying close attention to how each order created a slightly different identity for the album through their specific juxtapositions and dynamics. The album's title comes from a moment in the show when a group of Victorian sailors who are trapped in winter pack ice, suffering dwindling psychological resources and supplies, stand on the deck of one of the doomed ships to watch the sun rise above the horizon for a moment, and then immediately set in the last sunset of the year before six weeks of darkness, an event which, even through the lens of their inevitable coming losses, could still be viewed as something astonishing and beautiful.

Visionary engineer, producer and dub experimentalist, Scientist returns to his roots to mix new album direct-to-disc for latest Night Dreamer session. With over 60,000 recordings to his name, Scientist (born Hopeton Overton Brown) is one of the most influential figures in dub. From Studio One to King Tubby's, Channel One to Tuff Gong, he worked at Kingston's premier studios, pioneering recording techniques and elevating the dub mix into an art form in his own right. Known as the "Dub Chemist" for both his technical expertise and forward-thinking ideas, Scientist's Night Dreamer session brings together musicians from across the London reggae scene, including The Instigators' rhythm section Mafia (bass) and Fluxy (drums), Creation Rebel guitarist Tony Ruffcut, vocalist Donovan Kingjay, Jah Shaka keyboardist Greg Assing, and saxophonist Finn Peters. Joined by Amsterdam-based trombonist Salvoandrea Lucifora and backing vocalists Alyssa Harrigan and Peace Oluwatobi, Scientist went about taking the studio apart and reassembling to his exacting specifications. He spent hours on the kick drum alone, rewired the mixing desk's high pass EQ, brought in two 18" subwoofers, piled everyone (bar Fluxy on drums) into the control room and had the whole place shaking under the power and clarity of the bass. Having set up the studio just right, the group cut six tracks that were subsequently dubbed direct-to-lacquer by Scientist, allowing his creativity to come to the fore: "In dub mixing, the engineer now becomes the artist and it's a performance that the engineer do," Scientist explains, with almost five decades of experience to his name. The centerpiece of the album is lead single "Missing You," on which Scientist strips back the crisp groove to let Donovan Kingjay's vocals soar. Dubbing in the horns, guitar and keys with an improvisatory flair, Scientist channels the energy towards the chorus, a masterclass in tension and release, filtered through Scientist's signature sci-fi dub sound. Surrounded by vintage analogue gear, and recording direct-to-disc in a manner familiar to his early days cutting dubs at King Tubby's, Scientist described the experience as being "thrown back in time." Having made records for everyone from Sugar Minott to Barrington Levy and released a treasure trove of cult albums under his own name, a new chapter in the extraordinary story of Scientist is opening up. From Lawrence English: "This recording was, in many ways, a critical one for me. In some respects, it rounded out a period of work that was focused on a particular marriage of thematics and harmony. Like For Varying Degrees Of Winter, it dwelled on old world impressions of the seasons, something that, in the southern hemisphere, isn't intrinsically part of our way of approaching place. I think it was this incongruity with my own lived experience that kick-started the interest in making these recordings. The intention had originally been to take Vivaldi head-on, as the holder of the Four Seasons terrain (I jest of course), but shortly after completing this album, it became resoundingly clear that even in the old world, seasonality was a thing that was known 'then', and unknowable 'now'. Climate change, as a lived experience and not merely as a 'possibility', suddenly came into focus with reports flooding in about the climatic dynamics since the turn of the century and events like the Black Saturday fires here in Australia. It felt like, and continues to feel like, seasonality as some predictable measure of our world is relegated to the 'before' times. This record is not about these climatic shifts however, more a recognition of how we have used patterns and predictability to guide us over the centuries and perhaps a realization that the way forward is not the path we have known historically. Listening back to the record with fresh ears, a process made completely delightful by Stephan Mathieu who has carefully remastered it, I am struck by how minimal some of the structures were. There are moments that strike me as uncharacteristically patient and even generous, allowing one element to hold without interference. I'm grateful to still feel a deep connection to this edition and to the people and places that helped shape it. I hope you find some sense of your place here. Sedimental presents the newest work, A Rift In the Horizon's Wall (ARITHW), from Paris-based electronic musician and sound artist Kassel Jaeger (Fran?ois Bonnet), realized during a week-long artist residency at Epsilon Spires in Brattleboro, Vermont in June of 2023. In addition to creating and performing ARITHW he also performed Eliane Radigue's "L'?le resonante," bookending the week. ARITHW was developed during an artist residency at the Epsilon Spires art center based in Brattelboro, VT, USA. During this residency, Fran?ois J. Bonnet appropriated the space to create original music. Using their 1906 Estey 3-Manual Organ Pipe as his primary source, Bonnet then set about exploring secondary instrumental sources, such as the in house grand piano, but also, and perhaps more importantly, the acoustics of the three-tiered sanctuary of the former historic church (built 1889) that is now Epsilon Spires. ARITHW unfolds like an interstice, a gap between two frames on a flat surface generated by the organ, a surface that shatters to reveal an unclear, ghostly, and elusive space. In this work, Bonnet focuses on more instrumental material, only to subvert it and dilute it further before melting it into an uncertain acoustic space that evokes reminiscences of Erik Satie, Walter Marchetti, or even Eliane Radigue, as well as his own previous music and the liminal electroacoustic climates that have been his trademark for many years. A profound work of subtle complexity and suspended tension. ARITHW also refers to the vernacular literary mythology of New England, a land, at the same time, still attached to Europe and torn from it. The album artwork consists of works by Bonnet, with the first edition accompanied by a limited edition of 70 unique engravings produced by the artist at Brattleboro-based First Proof Press. The residency and project were made possible by a Jazz & New Music Creation Grant from FACE Foundation, Supporting French-American Cultural Exchange in Education and the Arts. Fran?ois J. Bonnet is a Franco-Swiss composer and electroacoustic musician based in Paris. He is a writer and theoretician: his books The Order of Sounds: A Sonorous Archipelago, The Infra-World, and After Death are published in English by Urbanomic. He is also the co-editor of the SPECTRES series of publications. As a musician, Bonnet often works under the project name Kassel Jaeger.
