NEWS - 1996
12.27.1996
THE RUMORS AREN'T TRUE
There have been rumors circulating around that MBM are on tour supporting Porno for Pyros this January. MBM are in fact safe and warm locked away in some studio still recording the follow-up to this past year's triumph Subliminal Sandwich. They spent Christmas together (a day off from recording) and wish everyone peaceful wishes for the New Year.
The staff here at Brainwashed want to extend Holiday wishes to you and your friends and family personally from us and from MBM as well.
11.27.1996
MBM FINALLY FINISH THE TOUR
The four members of Meat Beat Manifesto have finally come off the road and are resting up briefly before the go into the studio to put together the next album. On this album, for the first time, MBM will include all members of the touring band. There is no scheduled release, title, or anything else yet, we will keep you informed however...
Also, check out It's the Music, the latest CD single - available only as a European/UK release from Play It Again Sam as well as the song "We Done it Again" from the new compilation In Defense of Animals, volume 2.

San Francisco Bay Area fans get a treat
Not only has the single for "Asbestos Lead Asbestos" been added to the rotating playlist at Live 105 FM, BUT MBM are coheadlining a show with Chemical Brothers on Saturday, November 23rd at the Warfield Theater.
In other news, The Utterer (a little MBM newsletter) should be in the mail and on its way to those of you who wrote in to the MBM Info box listed on the inside of Subliminal Sandwich.
Also this week, In Defense of Animals has finally hit the shops.
And finally, this week's Melody Maker rates It's the Music as Single of the Week, calling it "their best offering since Radio Babylon. The single for "It's the Music is only a European/UK release from Play it Again, Sam with no plans as of yet to issue it in the US.

Laika's next U.K. single, "Breather" will be backed
with the MBM/Dangers remix (236 Mix) of Laika's song, "Looking for the
Jackalope" which was originally recorded for and appeared on the Red Hot
Organizations benefit album, Offbeat on TVT Records. Offbeat sported
many notable artists (and tracks) which regrettably was only released in
North America. MBM likewise produced an original song for the album "I
Control (Audio Collage #2)" which was later remixed as a collaboration
between Dangers vs. Skylab. Both of these remixes were packaged on a 12"
in very limited numbers and serviced to radio as promos.
(I Control can be found as a bonus track on MBM's new single, "It's the
Music" out now in the U.K. on Play it Again Sam Records.
And finally support act for the US tour, Freaky Chakra have a new album due out on Astralwerks soon.

OCTOBER 9 News from the MBM camp: The 30 Minute video program, Electronika presents a video homage to Meat Beat airing Wednesday, Oct. 16th at 9pm EST on the Manhattan Public Access station, Ch. 69. The program will feature early clips such as "Strap Down" alongside MBM's latest sci-fyish video excursion for the band's single, "Asbestos Lead Asbestos".
A new, exclusive MBM track, "We Done it Again" appears on the upcoming
album fund-raiser, In Defense of Animals Benefit Compilation - Vol.
2 due for release on Caroline
Records (I wonder how Suzanne Ronaldo is these days...) in North
America on October 29th and on Play it Again Sam for the UK and Europe on
October 16th. "We Done it Again" is one of the new MBM songs being
performed in the band's live show during their current tour for
Subliminal Sandwich. Proceeds benefit In Defense of Animals, a San
Francisco Bay Area based animal rights organization.
In Addition to MBM, this compilation features music by White Zombie, The
Orb, Chemical Bros., Massive Attack vs. Mad Professor, Bjork, PJ Harvey,
Belly, Elastica, Mike Watt, Beastie Boys, KRS-One, Morphine, Alice Donut,
and Aleka's Attic (River Phoenix's band).
A brand NEW Meat Beat Manifesto track, "It's the Music"
will be released as a single in Europe by Play it Again Sam Records later
this month to coincide with the band's upcoming overseas tour with show
dates in England, Germany, France, Denmark, Switzerland, Belgium, and
Holland. The tracking for the commercially available single will include
two versions of the title track plus "I Control (Audio Collage #2)" and a
Luke Vibert remix of Asbestos Lead Asbestos (Plug mix).
"I Control" which first appeared earlier this year on the Red Hot
Organization's Off Beat benefit compilation in the U.S. has not
been previously released in the UK/European market while the remix of
"Asbestos" has only been available on 12" promo in the U.S. Once again,
the cover design is from New York graphic artist Rich Borge.
Jack Dangers is doing a remix of the next Nine Inch Nails single, "The
Perfect Drug". The original version is to appear in an upcoming David
Lynch film soundtrack produced by Trent Reznor to be released on November
26th on Nothing Records. The NIN single goes to radio on November 4th,
with remixes packaged together for a commercial release soon thereafter.
Other original music on the soundtrack recording includes new tracks from
Smashing Pumpkins and Barry Adamson. The film score is by Angelo
Badalamenti.
Mike Powell, master of theremin and other instruments says regarding the
new single "The NIN mix is slamming. A manifesto of meaty beats.
Amazingly hard, rude boy, stylings. An epic in intensity. After 3 days
all I could hear was the world swishing and sputtering in and out of
break neck drum and bass passages. It took a whole day and a half of sleep to
shake it. The mix was finished yesterday. Jack still had the editing
to do. I can't wait to hear the final, it was monsterous when I
stumbled out of Toast studios at 11 am( Toast was formerly the famous
Coast Recorders, now owned and operated by engineering whiz Craig
Silvy and Phillip Steir of Consolidated). We had only gotten back to
town Sunday night. The mix was started Monday!"
The October issue of Spin has their own review of the Organic Fest as well as slight mentions of MBM. Perhaps the lack of MBM content might suggest the magazine holding information for a future feature. Maybe with enough response, they'll consider it... (I personally feel the article ignored MBM, but that's just me, go look for yourself.)
And finally, MBM pick up the touring schedule later this month for their Euro-sweep. There are rumors floating around about a return to the US, so keep your fingers crossed, America.

MBM Europe tour. There will be three versions of the track mixed by Jack
with a bonus track of Asbestos Lead Asbestos remixed by Luke Viebert.
Cover design will once again be done by NYC graphic artist, Rich Borge who
is profiled in a feature in this month's issue of Adobe Magazine (which is
distributed to approximately one million users). Amongst Rich's pieces
pictured in the publication's story is none other that MBM's Subliminal
Sandwich artwork!
SEPTEMBER 21 "A Night of Nothing" hits MTV's 120 Minutes on September 29th
Hot from the CMJ convention in NYC, MTV will feature bits and pieces from some of the artists that night (see last news for more details). MBM should have approximately a 20 minute spot of music and interviews. SET YOUR VCRs... (Please - I don't have cable and could use a copy.)
LATE BREAKING NEWS ON THE MERCHANDISE FRONT

SEPTEMBER 11 Success at "A Night of Nothing"
MBM played the hottest ticket at the CMJ Convention at a showcase for Nothing Records also featuring surprise Nothing artists, NIN and Marilyn (Cooper) Manson. MBM played a 45 minute set to a sold-out, captivated house which included Nothing ringleader, Trent Reznor. Coil was also in attendance and hung out with Jack Dangers at the Nothing Records aftershow party at the Spy Bar in New York City. (Hmm, Coil have time to fly out to NYC and hang out in bars and they don't have time to answer my email about the lost single I sent them money for... Email me privately for more of that story...)
Humble apologies from the MBM camp for North
Carolina residents:
Meat Beat's show in Raleigh, NC was cancelled due to hurricane Fran and
the resulting state of emergency called for that city. We hope all the
residents in that city and effected areas are safe after all the natural
disaster.
I just saw the show in Boston this week and was completely blown away.
This tour, in my humble opinion blows all prior MBM tours out of the
water. There's improvisations, old songs, new songs, new twists to old
songs, and just an amazing sense of togetherness. This show RAWKS! :)
So, if you live in any of the following areas, you would greatly miss out
by not seeing them.
...and as a final note: If you see John Wilson (the guitarist), tell him
to call home, his brother misses him.

"Asbestos Lead Asbestos" will be the first U.S. single released to coincide with the ENIT tour. A video for the track was produced by H-Gun Productions out of Chicago and is a real stand-out. MTV Europe loves the video and has already shown it or scheduled it for several of their programs including 120 Minutes, Alternative Nation and it was debuted on the MTV Partyzone during a featured interview segment with Jack Dangers and MBM's guitarist,John Wilson in London.
JULY 7 New on this site this week:
Brian McDonald's thorough Review and Interview from the Organic fest on June 22nd in California.
Chris Miller's discography of Perennial Divide.
JUNE 22 Subliminal Sandwich, the best album of the year, by (of all people) MTV! Click here for proof. Do you think this will mean they'll actually play any MBM videos? I sure hope so.
The following is the tentative schedule for the concert tonight (June 22) in Los Angeles:
7:00 pm Loop Guru
8:00 pm Meat Beat Manifesto
9:30 pm Underworld
11:10 pm Chemical Brothers
12:40 am Orbital
2:30 am Orb
The following is an article which appeared in the Los Angeles Times: Top techno bands, The Orb, Orbital, Chemical Brothers and Meat Beat Manifesto are among those set for a two-day festival at Big Bear, June 21-22 presented by rave producer, Chaotica. Meat Beat Manifesto meanwhile has signed with Trent Reznor's Nothing Records with the double-disc "Subliminal Sandwich" due June 4... However, this will be only a one-day festival with the aforementioned names plus Underworld and Zion Nation (tentative).
- And, to other news...
If you want some exclusive Meat Beat tracks now, pick up the Red Hot Organization's Benefit for AIDS compilation. The MBM track is "I Control Audio Collage #2" and I believe it's on TVT records.
Upcoming exclusive tracks on other compliations are:
In Defense of Animals #2, the track is "We Done it Again" Due out in the end of August on Caroline records in the US and PIAS in the rest of the world.
Volume #16, "Future Worlds" I guess this song itself is not exclusive, the the remix is so totally different that it almost is a whole 'nuther song. Some guest guitar work by Joe Gore who's done work with the PJ Harvey band and Tom Waits.
Johny Stevens is no longer with MBM. He has contributed bits to the new album, but isn't an official member anymore. :(
The US chunk of the Meat Beat tour will start sometime in June. The lineup that I know of so far, for those who want it: Jon Wilson - Guitar, Mike Powell - Samples and keys, Lynn Farmer - Drums.
So what happened with "Nuclear Bomb"? Well, Mute's downsizing happened right about at the same time that PIAS's contract with them was just about to run out. Unfortunately, this meant that the single never made it out. With any luck, now that things are going smoother, PIAS (and Nothing) will decide to put it out, even if a bit late. No definates yet. It would be a shame to have it never hit the shelves, being that there was about 6 - 7 tracks on the thing.
And for those still reading, you can catch the song "Reanimator" in the movie "Up Close and Personal." Also, the Chemical Brothers are remixing "Cutman" for their upcoming remix album "Live at Socialism Vol. 1".
JUNE 3 Jack is to return to the US on Tuesday having stayed behind to do some addtional press and a London hand with Orbital, Orb and the likes. He and John Wilson did an MTV-Europe program segment called Partyzone. It should run the first or second week in August and will premier the video for Asbestos Lead Asbestos assuming that is completed in time - though I suspect that based on the actual taping which announces this video, that MTV will be forced to delay airing unitl the video is availble.
The Europe gigs went very well for the most part. The band had so much fun in Amsterdam at Melkweg (MIlkyway) show that they played for 2 hours, the last 40 minutes being basically a series of jams. Good attendance especially at the London show which had over 600 punters, also on that bill was Autechre. A million friends of J. Dangers surfaced for that gig, along with a bunch of different bands in attendance and making the scene, which it definately was. High marks scored for performance. Perry Farrell also in attendance - very impressed, hung in backstage - long chat with Jack. The Apollo Festival in Meerhout Belgium also went very well- a number of big festival promoters on site and suitably impressed - hopefully to open the door to some other UK/Euro festivals later in the summer. Quite a few fans mentioning that they saw the MBM tour dates on a website (yay!).
MBM is confirmed for Chaotica organized U.S. one-off festival date in Los Angeles on Saturday, June 22nd. Please note the press clipping below that appeared in the Los Angeles Times: Top techno bands, The Orb, Orbital, Chemical Brothers and Meat Beat Manifesto are among those set for a two-day festival at Big Bear, June 21-22 presented by rave producer, Chaotica. Meat Beat Manifesto meanwhile has signed with Trent Reznor's Nothing Records with the double-disc "Subliminal Sandwich" due June 4... It would be a shame to have it never hit the shelves, being that there was about 6 - 7 tracks on the thing.
